fix(web): thread details card animates with the right panel instead of popping and bouncing - #28706
With panel animations on, the thread details card pops in and out with no animation. Every other part of that header row animates. Opening or closing the right panel while the card is open is jumpy too. The card vanishes and reappears partway through, and the composer jumps and bounces.
To reproduce, set Settings → Appearance → Panel animations to 400ms and open a thread on a window wide enough for the inline card. Toggle the card. Then, with the card open, open and close the right panel.
Change
The card now fades in and out with a short drift. The drift matches how far the composer moves, so the card leads the composer as it moves aside.
While the right panel animates, the chat area lays the card and composer out for the width it will end at, not the width of the current frame. The composer moves once, in one direction. The card keeps its spot and fades above the moving panel instead of being wiped in by its edge.
The parts that make this work:
ThreadDetailsCard keeps an exiting card mounted with the existing usePanelPresence hook and uses the shared panel animation duration.
canvasStore and ChatCanvas read the width the canvas will settle at from the running width transitions beside it. The canvas store uses that width for the inline-or-popover decision and the composer's lane.
ChatCanvas eases the composer's lane insets with one Web Animations call. index.css registers the two inset variables as <length> so they can interpolate.
PreviewPanelShell gets isolate, so the card stays above the whole panel. A closing panel drops its 1px border, which removed a 1px jitter at the end of a close.
While the panel moves, the card sits at z-31, just above the desktop Browser webview (z-30, mounted at the app root). It returns to z-20 once the panel settles.
Scope and approval
This is a small, focused fix for an obvious bug. The panel animation setting already exists, and the card was the only part of the header that ignored it. The jumps when the right panel moves are part of the same bug: the card and composer were laid out for each frame's width instead of the final one. Every change above serves that one problem. It adds no setting and no new behavior beyond animating what already moves.

Panel animations at 400ms. Each clip toggles the card off and on, then opens and closes the right panel. The first row plays at real speed and the second at ⅓ speed. The 60fps video shows both at real speed, then at ⅓ speed. All media is in this gist.
In a web dev client, I sampled the painted layout on every frame at window widths from 1057 to 2400px, with the left sidebar open and collapsed. On every open, close, and toggle, the composer moved in one direction only. The card never jittered and never sat under the composer or the panel. Clipping returned after interrupted toggles.
A new canvasStore.test.ts case covers decisions while the canvas is still animating. It checks the opening and closing directions and the settled state.
A new ThreadDetailsCard.browser.test.tsx case closes an inline card with 400ms animations on. It checks that the card stays mounted and inert, then unmounts. It fails on main.

The chat canvas now tracks settled width during panel transitions. The layout model uses that width to place the details card and calculate lane shifts. The canvas and inline card animate layout changes, and the chat column changes overflow behavior while the canvas settles.

Scope the measurement cache to inline mode.

Scope the measurement cache to inline mode.
When the canvas is wide enough, preferredPlacement remains non-null while mode === "popover". This makes cardWidth non-undefined, so the popup uses the inline measurement key. Lines 107-120 can then cache popup dimensions and report them through measureDetailsCard as inline dimensions. A later inline transition can reuse the popup height and select the wrong density or placement.
Make cardWidth undefined in popover mode, or include mode in the measurement key. Only report measurements for the inline card.

The current fixture never sets canvasSettling or detailsCardLaneShift to values that exercise the settling path. Its inline tests also do not close an already-mounted inline card. Add fixture parameters and a test that closes the default-open inline card while keeping inline={true}, then checks retained mounting, inert, and the settling class.
Add a browser test with canvasSettling={true} and a nonzero detailsCardLaneShift. Keep inline={true}, call setThreadPanelOpen(threadB, "inline", false), and assert that the Thread details region remains in the document, has the inert attribute, and retains the settling class.

Scope the measurement cache to inline mode: not changing this.
The case you describe, a wide canvas with the card in popover mode, already exists on main. There, cardWidth is preferredPlacement?.width, so popover mode with a non-null preferred placement already uses the inline key. This PR doesn't introduce it.
This PR only adds the ?? inlinePlacement?.width fallback. usePanelPresence returns inlinePlacement only while the exiting inline card is still mounted, and is null after it unmounts. During that window, the measured element is the exiting inline card, so its measurements are inline ones.
The suggested mode === "inline" ? … : undefined would undo that. The exiting card's mode is already "popover" when the right panel takes the width, so it would switch to the popup key and reset its density mid-fade. That's the bug the fallback fixes.
Cover the retained inline-card exit: added in 1809ce2.
The new test in ThreadDetailsCard.browser.test.tsx turns on 400ms panel animations and closes an open inline card. It checks that the card is still mounted and inert, then that it unmounts.
It fails against main's ThreadDetailsCard.tsx, which unmounts the card at once.
I left out the class assertion. The settling class only affects styling.
…f popping and bouncing
With panel animations on, the inline thread details card popped in and out
with no animation, and opening or closing the right panel made the chat
composer jump and bounce: the card decided whether it fit from the width the
chat area had mid-animation, so it appeared, vanished, and shoved the lane
around partway through.
The card now fades in and out with a short drift that leads the composer as
it moves aside. While a panel animates, the chat canvas works out the width it
will settle at from the panel's running width transition and lays the card
and lane out for that, so the composer moves once, in one direction. The card
holds its settled spot and fades above the moving panel, which no longer clips
or paints over it.

Do not force horizontal drift when the lane does not move.

Do not force horizontal drift when the lane does not move.
When detailsCardLaneShift is 0, the 24px minimum applies a positive transform during both the opening starting:translate-x state and the exit state. The inline placement leaves only 12px at the right edge, so overflow-x-hidden clips the card. The merge base did not apply this transform. Use zero as the minimum so the card still follows a moving lane without clipping when the lane is stationary.

@coderabbitai, replying to "Do not force horizontal drift when the lane does not move" in review 5732020074: not changing this.
The 24px minimum is intentional. The PR changes the card's toggle from a pop to a fade with a short drift. The author reviewed side-by-side recordings and chose a drift on every toggle, including when the lane stays put. A minimum of 0 turns the stationary-lane toggle into a plain fade.
The clipping is real. A card displaced more than 12px extends past the column's overflow-x-hidden edge, so its outer edge is clipped early in the fade, while it's still mostly transparent. A minimum of 0 would not remove that, though. Any lane shift over 12px clips the same way. Only the stationary-lane case would change.
The test asserts inertness immediately and removal eventually. An implementation that unmounts the card before the 400 ms usePanelPresence timer expires can pass. Advance fake timers by 200 ms and assert that the card is still present before advancing to removal.

Strengthen the `keeps a closing inline card mounted and inert until its exit

Measurement cache: I withdraw the mode-based cache suggestion. The fallback preserves the retained inline card’s measurement key during exit. Gating that key on mode === "inline" would reset its measurements while the inline card is still mounted.
Exit coverage: I inspected the new test. It checks that the closing card remains mounted with an inert ancestor, then unmounts. That addresses the coverage request. A settling-class assertion is not needed for this behavior test.
I inspected the source and test assertions; I did not run the browser test.

- The server is event-sourced, and side effects run after the command commits. In tests, drain the effect worker (`OrchestrationEffectWorkerV2.drain`) or await the specific persisted event or `Deferred` that marks the milestone. Never wait on sleeps or polling. A test that needs a timeout to pass is wrong. Concretely:
- `it.effect` runs on a `TestClock`; `Effect.sleep` only advances through `TestClock.adjust`. `it.live` is wall-clock and only for subprocess or network fixtures.
- No `yieldNow` or `sleep` polling loops. Await the `Deferred`, take from the `Queue`, or drain the worker.
- No per-test timeout argument or `retry`. The project timeout is the ceiling, and flaky tests are fixed, not retried.
- No `performance.now()` or `Date.now()` deltas. Assert on events and counts, not elapsed time.
- Browser tests assert through `expect.element` or `vi.waitFor`, never `requestAnimationFrame` or `transitionend`.
- `vi.mock` factories must not spread a real module that pulls in Shiki or the diff workers.
- `it.skip` and friends need a tracking issue on the line above: `// quarantine: #1234 <why>`.
- Lint enforces this: `t3code/no-test-timeout-or-unreasoned-skip`, `t3code/no-frame-waits-in-browser-tests`, `t3code/no-wall-clock-in-tests`, `t3code/no-real-time-wait-in-tests`, `t3code/no-polling-loop-in-tests`.

- Web browser tests are `*.browser.test.tsx` or `*.browser.test.ts` and render with `await using screen = await render(...)` from `apps/web/test/render.tsx`. `t3code/require-disposable-render` errors on the old patterns.
- Acquire what the test drives after mounting (fake timers it advances, spies it sets up after mounting) after the render, so it disposes before the unmount. Anything the first render reads comes before it.
- A helper that renders and then waits or clicks puts the screen in an `AsyncDisposableStack` and `move()`s it out only on success, so a failed wait still unmounts.
- `rerender` needs a fresh element on every call.
- No lifecycle hooks and no module-level mutable state. Shared mock state that `vi.mock` factories read is reset by a `setup()` call at the top of the test.
- `router` is on by default. Pass `router: false` only with a one-line comment saying why.
```tsx
it("saves on Enter", async () => {
const onSave = vi.fn();
using _now = vi.spyOn(Date, "now").mockReturnValue(0);
await using screen = await render(<TitleEditor onSave={onSave} />, { router: "/threads/1" });
await userEvent.type(screen.getByRole("textbox"), "Title{Enter}");
expect(onSave).toHaveBeenCalledWith("Title");
@Byntham, understood. I withdraw the suggestion to remove the 24px minimum drift.
The drift is intentional even when the lane stays stationary. Setting the minimum to 0 would remove that behavior, but would not eliminate clipping when the lane shifts by more than 12px. My recommendation did not account for that distinction.
