feat: Labs option to suggest your next prompt after Claude and Codex turns - #28047
Claude and Codex can both predict your next message after a turn. Claude Code shows it as a prompt suggestion, and the Codex app has its Tab suggestion. T3 Code never showed either one.
Now there is a Labs option, Suggest next prompt, off by default. When it is on, the empty composer shows the predicted next message in gray after a turn ends. Press Tab to fill it in, then edit or send it, or press Escape to dismiss it.
Labs option
Claude suggestion
Codex suggestion
Why Labs, off by default: each suggestion is one extra model request, so it uses some plan usage. The request reuses the turn's prompt cache, but cached input still counts.
Codex: about 11k input tokens per suggestion on a small thread (97% cached) and about 20 output tokens. The input grows with the thread.
Claude: Anthropic calls it nearly free. It still counts, and Claude turns it off near your limit.
How it works
Setting:promptSuggestionsEnabled is a server setting shown in Settings > Labs. The session manager reads it when a provider session opens and passes it to the adapter. Changes apply to new sessions, the same as other provider settings.
Claude: we set the Agent SDK promptSuggestions option and forward the prompt_suggestion message it sends after result. Claude decides when to suggest. It skips the first turn, plan mode, turns near the usage limit, and sometimes others.
Codex: after a completed root turn, including one that leaves background work running or a held goal that later completes, the adapter calls the app server's experimental thread/sample request. It runs one low-effort response on a hidden fork that shares the parent's prompt cache, and fails quietly on Codex versions without that request.
Transport: suggestions are not persisted. The session manager catches the new prompt_suggestion.updated adapter event in its event pump, the same way it handles command_output.delta, and keeps the latest suggestion per thread in memory. Clients read it from a new orchestration.subscribePromptSuggestion stream, which checks the thread before each suggestion and never serves one for a deleted thread. The client subscribes only when the server advertises the promptSuggestions capability.
Composer: the suggestion shows only for the thread's latest completed run, so it never goes stale. It never replaces approval, question, or plan prompts. It never shows next to context chips, or on touch-only screens where Tab can't accept it.
Managed Codex: the pin moves from 0.156.1 to 0.166.0, because 0.156.1 does not have thread/sample. The digests come from the GitHub release API.
Mobile is not included. It has no Tab key, so it needs a tap-to-use control, which is a follow-up.
Proof: vp run check:changed passes. I added adapter tests for both providers and a session-manager test for the deleted-thread case; that test fails without the check. In a dev server I turned the Labs option on: a new Claude Haiku 5.5 thread showed a suggestion, as did a Codex GPT-5.6 Luna thread, and Tab filled it in.

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — Prompt suggestions are opt-in, disclose extra model usage, and only fill an editable draft. The PR also changes the default managed Codex installation from 0.156.1 to 0.166.0 independently of that toggle; that runtime-default change requires human review.

Walkthrough
Claude and Codex can generate next-prompt suggestions after eligible turns. The server stores suggestions by thread and exposes them through a WebSocket subscription. The web composer displays eligible suggestions and lets users insert one with Tab. A Labs setting controls suggestions for new sessions.
Contracts add the prompt-suggestion capability, setting, RPC, and provider event. Claude consumes eligible suggestion frames; Codex requests suggestions after eligible completed turns. Tests cover both adapters. Codex release assets advance to version 0.166.0.

The session manager stores the latest suggestion for up to 256 threads and streams a thread’s current value and replacements. The WebSocket handler exposes the subscription. Authorization, capability reporting, instrumentation, event routing, and test mocks are updated.

The web client subscribes when the environment supports suggestions and the suggestion matches the thread’s latest completed run. The composer offers eligible suggestions as placeholder text and inserts one with Tab when the prompt is empty. The Labs setting, settings search, and user documentation describe the feature.
Long suggestions may overlap composer controls, and a rare timing race may hide a suggestion. These are bounded issues; the PR is mergeable with awareness.

feat: Claude and Codex suggest your next prompt, Tab to use it
feat: Labs option to suggest your next prompt after Claude and Codex turns
Oct 31, 2026
Claude's SDK emits a predicted next prompt after each turn, and Codex
0.165+ exposes thread/sample on a cache-sharing fork. Forward both as an
unpersisted per-thread suggestion that the web composer shows as ghost
text and fills on Tab. Bump the managed Codex install to 0.166.0.

Suggestions spend plan usage, so replace the default-on per-provider
switches with a server-scoped Labs flag (off by default) that the session
manager passes to adapters when a provider session opens. Codex now also
samples after background work and after a held goal completes.

Why Labs, off by default: each suggestion is one extra model request, so it uses some plan usage. The request reuses the turn's prompt cache, but cached input still counts.
How it works
promptSuggestionsEnabledis a server setting shown in Settings > Labs. The session manager reads it when a provider session opens and passes it to the adapter. It runs one low-effort response on a hidden fork that shares the parent's prompt cache, and fails quietly on Codex versions without that request.prompt_suggestion.updatedadapter event in its event pump, the same way it handlescommand_output.delta, and keeps the latest suggestion per thread in memory.
