feat(tailscale): your own devices find and connect to your boxes with no pairing code - #26757
Builds on #27996 (merged), which added the t3 up setup command. This PR adds Tailscale as one of its choices.
Tailscale users had a rough time next to T3 Connect:
Every device needed a pairing code, and direct sessions expired after 30 days.
Machines had to be added by hand.
Every Tailscale failure said "T3 Code on X did not answer".
Now, on a personal tailnet, Tailscale already knows which devices are yours, and T3 Code trusts that.
Stand up a box in one command. Run npx t3 up --tailscale on a server. Plain t3 up offers Tailscale too, and picks it first when Tailscale runs there. It does 4 things:
turns on Tailscale sign-in
opens the box to your tailnet only, unless you also choose the local network
installs the background service
prints a QR code of the box's tailnet address
Your tailnet policy decides, once it says anything. Access follows Tailscale grants with the app capability t3.codes/cap/t3code:
If no grant names this app, your own untagged devices get in. A personal tailnet needs no policy.
Once a grant names this app, the policy decides who gets in and with which scopes (read, standard, admin, or single scopes). The owner's other devices need a grant too.
t3 up --require-grant turns off the fallback to your own devices.
A denial names the missing scope and the grant to add. Each session holds exactly its grant, and a changed or removed grant ends sessions within about 30 seconds.
Your devices connect with no code.
The box runs tailscale whois on each connection. When the device is your own untagged device, the box issues a 1-hour DPoP session through the same grant path T3 Connect uses.
Renewal reruns every check, so the 30-day lockout is gone.
The desktop app adds the T3 machines it finds on your tailnet. Phones get the same list from any machine they are connected to. A machine you remove stays removed.
Status tells the truth.
A failed route names itself and gives the likely cause.
The host reports its Tailscale state, such as signed out or a node key about to expire.
The desktop app knows when this device is off the tailnet.
The composer picker and the sidebar show static status dots.
t3 tailscale status prints the same facts on the command line.
Connections are more reliable.
A healthy session never closes to try a better route.
Tailscale Serve retries after a failed start and leaves other servers' mappings alone.
The Serve switch shows your setting, not the last probe result.
The startup QR shows the HTTPS URL.
Security.
Sign-in refuses:
tagged nodes
nodes shared in from another tailnet
other users
subnet routers (exit nodes are allowed: they never forward other devices into the tailnet)
the box's own node
loopback, Serve and Funnel traffic
Browser origins get a hard 403.
DPoP is required.
Each box can block a device. A sign-in code is exchanged in one write that checks the block list, and a block revokes the device's sessions once it lands, so no session outlives a block.
Tradeoff: an agent on one of your untagged machines can sign in to your other boxes. That includes containers and VMs on that machine, because it NATs them into the tailnet under its own identity. To stop that, tag the servers that run agents. t3 up prints this tip.
Browser clients keep pairing codes for now.
A switch to another Tailscale account is another tailnet: the policy scan, cached whois answers and Serve cleanup records never carry over.
A managed policy without remote clients turns Tailscale sign-in off: the desktop switch shows the organization's lock, t3 up refuses it, the server will not start with it, and Tailscale sessions end at startup.
Turning it off is immediate.
t3 up --no-tailscale or the desktop switch restarts T3 Code. At start, it ends every Tailscale session and unused Tailscale sign-in code.
Off switches are written as false, so a value the service inherits cannot turn them back on.
A Serve mapping that a stopped run left (Tailscale was down, or the port changed) is removed once Tailscale answers. Records follow the Tailscale login profile, so a mapping on another account waits for a switch back.
vp run check:changed passes: format, lint, knip, typecheck, and tests beside the changes.
Focused tests cover:
every sign-in refusal (exit nodes now accepted) and the browser guard
the race between Block and grant exchange
the route rules (no Tailscale session on LAN routes, the upgrade path, and pruning stale route results)
the discovery decisions, and no repeat sign-in for a found machine that cannot be saved
the t3 up port check, including a server started by hand
Multi-device run with builds of this branch, nothing published:
Two Ubuntu 24.04 VMs, each its own tailnet node, set up with t3 up
A third VM running the Linux desktop app, driven headless
An Android emulator on a Mac, reaching the tailnet through that Mac, which is an exit node
What passed:
t3 up and a second t3 up run; LAN connections refused; t3 tailscale status
First-run setup lists both boxes, signed in with no code
The phone adds a box by name with no code through an exit node
Block and Unblock both ways, the self-block warning, and the blocked device's own message
Pairing with a code while blocked; t3 pair prints the tailnet URL
Box down: "T3 Code on t3ts-box1 did not answer", then reconnects on its own in about 20 s
Tailscale off on the laptop: "Tailscale is off on this device", then reconnects about 10 s after Tailscale is back
That run found 10 problems, now fixed in this PR:
Exit nodes were refused
No discovery during first-run setup
t3 pair printed a LAN URL the box refuses
A bare 100.x address with a code used port 443 or 80; the add form now asks for the pairing link, which carries the port, so a code never goes over plain HTTP by guess
Raw refusal codes in the add form
The wrong unblock path
No warning before blocking your own device
A "did not answer over Tailscale" headline when Tailscale was fine
A session leaked on every failed save
A mobile row that said "Retrying" when it was not
A separate older bug, the Linux t3 binary needing libatomic1 on fresh Ubuntu, is being fixed in its own PR.
Not verified:
a real iPhone
the macOS and Windows Tailscale CLI paths
Tailscale HTTPS (Serve)
a tagged box
renewal after the 1-hour session
First-run setup finds your boxes
Devices on each box
Blocking yourself warns first
Phone adds a box by name, no code

Tailscale sign-in works as designed. On large tailnets the periodic policy scan may spawn many short-lived Tailscale CLI processes each minute while an owner-device session is active. That is a bounded efficiency concern and does not block merging.

… no pairing code
Squashed onto the latest main. Tailscale sign-in now follows the managed
policy: without remote clients the desktop app keeps it off, `t3 up` refuses
it, the server will not start with it, and Tailscale sessions are signed out
at startup. Serve off uses main's per-path command, and the device block
migration moves to 78.
