Copy and Cut from the desktop Edit menu did nothing in a server-runtime Browser tab. The local clipboard kept its previous text, and Cut left the remote source untouched.

The fix forwards native Copy/Cut through the existing server keyboard bridge while this viewer has control. Keyboard Copy/Cut cancel their local default action to prevent a second command. The hidden textarea never replaces the clipboard with its sentinel, and website clipboard-write forwarding remains disabled as required by #19561.

Fixes the native-menu part of #26600. Website Copy buttons remain outside this fix.

Verification on the current head

Client and production server both ran 8f7a21bd11826979c42aa0d303134be4d8798550. Physical shiv, macOS 27.0.1 arm64, packaged T3 Code Beta 0.1.5, Electron 44.10.0, Chromium 152.0.7977.169 and server chrome-headless-shell 156.0.8078.70. The fresh frozen install and packaged build passed payload validation. app.asar SHA256 6c04124994677ea54a812f740bac9817ca4751deb428b5c85ac9771453c84850.

The reporter used macOS. This run exercises their server-runtime Browser panel in the packaged macOS app, with foreground pointer clicks on Edit > Copy/Cut and real local Cmd+V. The remote fixture observes trusted events and source state; it never overrides the clipboard. The panel has a server-browser canvas and textarea, no native webview, and control granted.

Case Result on ABC-India and Russian layouts
Pointer Edit > Copy Remote text pastes locally; source preserved; one trusted Copy
Pointer Edit > Cut Remote text pastes locally; source cleared; one trusted Cut
Cmd+C and Cmd+X Correct local paste and source state; one command each
Blur/refocus, then native Copy One Copy; correct paste and preserved source
Cmd+Shift+C or Ctrl+Alt+X, then blur/refocus and native Copy Later native Copy still works once
Ten fresh-source Cmd+X repeats per layout All 20 produce one Cut, clear the source and paste correctly

All 14 named cases and 20 additional Cut repeats passed. In each repeat the wire showed Meta down, X down, Meta up, without a delivered X keyup or an extra Ctrl+X pair. X-down to Meta-release intervals were 0-18 ms. The previous a5a41ac regression duplicated Cmd+X in 2/6 trials; its original failing clips remain below. R7/R8, refreshed packaged and layout evidence, and R9, duplicate Cut, are resolved by this exact-head run. R10, stale suppression after shortcuts/refocus, is resolved by removing the suppression flag; the focused tests and packaged cases cover it.

Before and after native menu Copy/Cut

Before on main 32ecd71726fee16f335484c1f95cbce126d461f6, 28 seconds. Native menu commands leave the local marker and remote source unchanged:

pointer-before.mp4

After on 8f7a21bd11826979c42aa0d303134be4d8798550, 23 seconds. Same selection, pointer menu commands, local paste and source checks:

latin-native.mp4

Current head: foreground Edit menu with Copy selected and remote source highlighted

Current head: native Cut clears its source and pastes the selected text locally

Shortcuts, refocus and genuine non-Latin input

Current-head Cmd+C/X and blur/refocus then native Copy, 27 seconds:

Ten fresh-source Cmd+X repeats, 76 seconds:

latin-repeat.mp4

Modified shortcuts followed by refocus and native Copy, 33 seconds:

latin-modified.mp4

Russian selected in the native input-source menu, then physical C/X producing Cyrillic с/ч with KeyC/KeyX, 21 seconds:

russian-layout.mp4

Current head: physical Cyrillic key output under the real Russian input source

Russian native pointer Copy/Cut, 23 seconds:

russian-native.mp4

Russian Cmd+C/X and refocus, 26 seconds:

russian-keyboard.mp4

Ten fresh-source Russian Cmd+X repeats, 75 seconds:

Russian modified shortcuts followed by native Copy, 33 seconds:

russian-modified.mp4

With Command held, this macOS Russian layout emits Latin c/x. Cmd+Shift+C's letter was intercepted by macOS; Ctrl+Alt+X emitted Dead or ≈. These genuine OS gestures left the later menu Copy working. The deterministic browser tests separately cover renderer-received modified Latin C/X. This recording does not establish Command plus Cyrillic key values on an OS that retains them.

All clips are continuous H.264 MP4s with only idle tails trimmed, no internal cuts or overlays. Decode validation passed. Existing unrelated system dialogs were left unanswered and do not cover the menu, source or paste controls. One setup drag copied a partial selection correctly; it is excluded from the passing cases. Input configuration was restored exactly. Owned apps, servers, recorders, isolated homes, scratch and worktree were removed; no real provider turn ran.

Cleanup verification confirmed the task worktree, scratch, captured processes and cua session were removed, the keyboard configuration restored, main tracked status empty, and every final MP4 decoded successfully.

Automated checks and review

On corex, all six Chromium clipboard/history browser cases passed. vp run check:changed passed format, lint, both knip checks, affected-package typechecking, six browser cases and the changed component's React compiler check. The previous production code fails the new cancellation assertions. This tests the changed shared web component on corex in addition to the packaged macOS run.

Current-head web CI passed 472 files and 5,129 tests, including all six clipboard/history cases. Required checks pass. All eight server-shard jobs report success but their actual Test steps were skipped; no server-shard test execution is claimed.

Macroscope approved 8f7a21bd. Independent Codex review found no new code findings. CodeRabbit has no outstanding finding but is automatically paused; a5a41ac is its last reviewed head. The fresh independent review covers this correction. No unresolved review threads remain.

The ready check assessed head 8f7a21bd11826979c42aa0d303134be4d8798550 against live main 80a2351fcb909034e65a512dfabeb3cdfd367762. The merge is conflict-free. Main's intervening preview changes concern tab limits, file choosers, downloads, CDP payload limits and navigation errors; none changes the clipboard handler, editing commands, clipboard stream, ownership checks or desktop-menu roles.

Scope and safety

Only apps/web/src/browser/ServerBrowserSurface.tsx and its browser test change. handleClipboard sends a balanced canonical Ctrl+C/X pair only for the controlling viewer and cancels the local sentinel copy. handleKey keeps raw keyboard forwarding and cancels the local default for plain Ctrl/Cmd+C/X, so there is no pending suppression state. The server's page-inaccessible clipboard capture, per-viewer reply routing and #19561 isolation stay intact.

macOS, Linux, Windows and web run this same ServerBrowserSurface.tsx handler. Desktop native commands use the existing copy/cut roles in apps/desktop/src/window/DesktopApplicationMenu.ts; this PR changes no platform branch or menu roles. Mobile has a separate unchanged input implementation. Earlier Linux packaged, production-web, two-viewer and delayed-reply recordings remain below with their actual commits. They establish those unchanged paths, rather than claiming new builds of those clients.

This fits CONTRIBUTING.md's focused obvious-bug exception: existing Edit commands were cancelled without reaching the existing server bridge. It adds no setting, workflow or product default. There are no protocol, bundling, packaging or scroll changes requiring Theo's approval. Shivam decides whether to merge; automatic merging is off.

Limits: website Copy buttons and non-text clipboard formats are outside this fix. No separate Windows build was run; the changed handler and menu roles are shared. Other OS/layout combinations that retain Cyrillic under Command were not exercised. Server-shard Test steps were skipped as disclosed above.

Historical before/after evidence and earlier builds, with original commit identities

Earlier a5a41ac macOS and Russian layout, regression found

Run r_tf0mval8kysz5q00 built and tested exact head a5a41ac9ce5b7c847ed176e0ff947c739f4a4d5f on physical shiv, macOS 27.0.1 arm64, Beta 0.1.5, Electron 44.10.0. Client and isolated production server matched this pin. Fresh frozen installs and packaged builds passed payload validation. Head app.asar SHA256 ec2b82a2c08dd8d0d3bb8f9a1aae9e9eb59d2ed4d53b3eb952f9b0b367d4a025.

Native pointer Edit > Copy/Cut passed with actual remote selection, local paste, preserved Copy source and cleared Cut source, and exactly one trusted remote event each. Cmd+C and refocus then native Copy passed. Cmd+X duplicated in 2 of 6 head trials; a fresh packaged baseline 32ecd71726fee16f335484c1f95cbce126d461f6 duplicated in 0 of 5. Paste remained correct but the second remote command is a regression. Observed wire order was Meta+X down, Meta up, then an extra Ctrl+X down/up pair. The suppression flag is cleared on modifier keyup before the delayed native Cut event.

Russian com.apple.keylayout.Russian was genuinely selected in macOS. Physical C/X produced Cyrillic с/ч with KeyC/KeyX. Native menus, Cmd+C/X and refocus Copy passed in that observed run. With Command held, this OS layout emitted Latin c/x. That passing case does not rule out the intermittent timing failure. The original keyboard configuration was restored exactly; owned apps, servers, recorders, worktrees and scratch were removed. Existing unrelated system dialogs remain visible outside the tested controls.

Previous rebase validation on a5a41ac

Recorded head a5a41ac9ce5b7c847ed176e0ff947c739f4a4d5f was rebased onto main 42ca5d560d053831e5c26ea826291d56ab94052c. Main independently added mouse Back/Forward tests in the same filename, causing an add/add conflict. Both sets now share one test setup, and all six cases pass. Main's mouse-history behavior is retained. The native clipboard production patch is unchanged, as checked with git range-diff.

On corex, CI=true vp test run --project browser src/browser/ServerBrowserSurface.browser.test.tsx passed 6/6. After installing main's added dependencies with the frozen lockfile, vp run check:changed passed formatting, lint, both knip checks, typechecking, all six browser cases and the React compiler check.

That head's web CI passed all six combined clipboard/history cases, 449 files and 5,010 tests, then booted the built web client. Desktop build and typecheck also passed. The eight server-shard jobs report success but their Test steps were skipped; no server-shard test execution is claimed. Macroscope approved this head. CodeRabbit reviewed this head without actionable findings; its notice pauses future automatic reviews after the configured review limit. The recordings below are retained with their original a8d8afa build identities as evidence for the unchanged clipboard path; they are not recordings of the rebased build. The previous source and CI ready check passed for this head against main d18690dadc1a34467971f9357dcc2689a77868b7: the merge is conflict-free, required checks are satisfied, Macroscope approved, and there are no unresolved review threads or automatic merge settings. Main has no further changes to the clipboard handler, clipboard routing or desktop-menu roles since the rebase base. Later base changes concern network advertising, theme handling, picture-in-picture capture, release notes and navigation-error parsing; they do not change the tested clipboard path.

Packaged macOS with foreground pointer menu clicks

Fresh packaged builds on physical shiv, macOS 27.0.1 arm64, Beta 0.1.5 and Electron 44.10.0. The client and isolated production server both match the build's pin. This completes the foreground-pointer evidence requested in review.

Pointer action in the server-runtime Browser panel Main 32ecd71726fee16f335484c1f95cbce126d461f6 Head a8d8afac1c32e4cea69b40452920902999e6e31b

Select remote text, click Edit > Cut, paste locally Local marker remains; remote source unchanged PTR-CUT-26633 pastes locally; source cleared

Before, 28 seconds. The pointer opens Edit at 5.6s and clicks Copy at 8.3s, then opens Edit at 18.6s and clicks Cut at 21.3s. Local paste follows each command.

pointer-before.mp4

After, 28 seconds on the exact head. The corresponding Copy/Cut clicks occur at 8.5s/21.5s. Both commands reach the remote page once, and the resulting text is pasted into the local composer. The recording shows one trusted Copy and one Cut, with zero untrusted events.

pointer-after.mp4

Before: pointer Cut leaves both the remote source and stale local clipboard marker

After: visible native Edit menu with Copy highlighted and the remote source selected

After: Copy pastes the remote text locally and preserves its source

After: Cut pastes the remote text locally and clears its source

These clips use actual foreground cursor movement, remote selection drags, and clicks on the macOS menu bar and menu items. They do not use Accessibility menu invocation or JavaScript clipboard commands. Each case first seeds a fresh local dummy marker through ordinary UI copy. Local native-menu Copy controls passed on both builds. Read-only observation confirmed a server-browser canvas and textarea, no native webview, and control granted. Existing system dialogs remain visible in the center of the display; they do not cover the recorded menu, source fields or local paste destination, and no dialog was answered.

Fresh build identities and pointer command transcript

Run r_smcwfg7c7jgbpg00 built both pins from clean detached worktrees. Both frozen installs and vp exec node scripts/build-desktop-artifact.ts --platform mac --target dir --arch arm64 --output-dir <task>/build-before-or-after --keep-stage exited 0 and printed Validated macOS payload (1 app bundle(s)).

Earlier macOS Accessibility and Cmd shortcut checks

Physical shiv, macOS 27.0.1 arm64, packaged Beta 0.1.5, Electron 44.10.0. Both client and isolated production server matched the respective commit. The real server-runtime Browser canvas showed control granted. Dummy text only.

Native menus were invoked through macOS Accessibility, with the app in the background. The menu animation is not visible in the captures. Commands were genuine native menu actions, not JavaScript clipboard calls. Cmd shortcuts and local paste used native key events. A baseline local-menu Copy control passed. The fixture only counted events. No clipboard overrides, synthetic ClipboardEvents or clipboard grants were used.

Each returned Invoked Edit > Copy/Cut through accessibility with the app in the background (not activated); verify the command's semantic effect from fresh state. The captures then show real Cmd+V into the local composer and the remote source state. Cmd+C/X cases follow at about 25s/34s. The main build already passes both shortcuts.

Earlier two-step menu-harness attempts were excluded. Refocus then native Copy and ordinary local copy/paste also passed on this exact head/build. All test processes, isolated state and scratch worktrees were removed.

CI on the recorded head a8d8afa

Web test output: all three clipboard browser tests pass, including native forwarding, keyboard Cut deduplication, refocus and a viewer without control. The full web job passed 439 files and 4,907 tests, and booted the built web client. CodeRabbit's cancellation assertion finding is covered by the no-control event assertions.

Desktop build and typecheck passed. These are results for the earlier recorded head; current-head results are listed above. The eight server-shard jobs report success but their Test steps were skipped. This is not passing server-shard test coverage. The thread-transfer measurement was also skipped; no benchmark result is claimed.

Earlier Linux and web evidence

These recordings retain their original build dates. The latest packaged Linux recording is 65b825f870e531f58b74de6e02f33aef92a1d787, AppImage 0.1.4, Electron 44.10.0, corex Ubuntu 26.04.1 under private X11. Native and keyboard Copy/Cut, refocus, local copy/paste and remote paste passed. The older web and two-viewer recordings are from 8dcb42c36cb0396dabc52b97b44a018237d24685.

These earlier recordings supported the clipboard path before the current keyboard-event correction. The current shared handler now cancels keyboard defaults and is covered by the fresh packaged verification above. Server dispatchViewerInput, clipboard routing and viewer ownership remain unchanged. They do not exercise the Linux browser-launch isolation wrapper since added on main. The exact-head macOS run above exercises the current server-browser launch and clipboard flow on macOS.

Assert that the clipboard events are canceled.

The tests dispatch copy and cut, but only assert that no inputs were sent. The native command test checks forwarded keys and textarea contents. Neither test asserts defaultPrevented, so removing event.preventDefault() could leave the tests passing while the hidden textarea overwrites the clipboard.

Suggested fix
-    input.dispatchEvent(new ClipboardEvent("copy", { bubbles: true, cancelable: true }));
-    input.dispatchEvent(new ClipboardEvent("cut", { bubbles: true, cancelable: true }));
+    const copyEvent = new ClipboardEvent("copy", { bubbles: true, cancelable: true });
+    const cutEvent = new ClipboardEvent("cut", { bubbles: true, cancelable: true });
+    expect(input.dispatchEvent(copyEvent)).toBe(false);
+    expect(input.dispatchEvent(cutEvent)).toBe(false);
     expect(mocks.sent).toEqual([]);

This is a test-coverage improvement, not a current production failure.

Verified in a real dev environment

verified as-is at a8d8afac1c32e4cea69b40452920902999e6e31b on this linux boat vm. no code changes or pushes.

installed and ran github/main (6575ce32508bd7908444241f3719aa33aaf77f90) in a separate worktree first, then stopped it before starting the exact pr head. both used isolated state. drove the actual web client with the repo's playwright and /usr/bin/google-chrome 151.0.7922.108.

created a project pointing at a real git repo through the app. a real codex gpt-6.1-sol turn created its readme on main; another read it through the pr client and returned its contents. the head reused a copy of that app-created data. no mocks, fixtures, or demo provider.

in the server-runtime browser panel, entered and selected Clipboard verification project in the real wikipedia search field. invoked chrome's native find and edit > copy/cut menus with x11 pointer input, then pasted into the local composer:

  • main: the clipboard kept local clipboard marker; cut left the remote text unchanged.
  • head: copy pasted the selected remote text locally and preserved its source. cut pasted the same text locally and emptied its source.
  • the head emitted trusted clipboard events and one remote c/x down/up pair per command. the real server returned the matching clipboard text over the preview stream.
  • neighboring behavior passed: keyboard cut sent one x down/up pair and one clipboard reply; local copy/paste and remote paste/copy round trips worked; native copy still worked after keyboard copy, blur, and refocus.

accepted chrome's ordinary clipboard permission prompt through its ui. no clipboard overrides or synthetic clipboard events were used for the live checks.

ran the existing ServerBrowserSurface.browser.test.tsx through blacksmith-check: 3 tests passed, covering native forwarding/refocus, shortcut deduplication, and no-control cancellation. installed the worker's missing chromium dependency before the successful run. github currently reports 27 successful, 12 skipped, and one cancelled check entry; these are separate from the live verification.

short runtime transcript

main: native cut preserves the remote source and pastes the stale local marker

pr head: native cut empties the remote source and pastes its text into the local composer

pr head: native clipboard interactions and local paste, 30-second animated recording

inspected the captures and checked playback and seeking of the uploaded recording in t3's browser player.

Not verified

packaged electron desktop menus, macos/windows, native ios/android, relay/tunnel connections, live transfer between two viewers, and non-text clipboard formats. this pass verifies the shared web surface through the real linux server browser and real codex provider; it does not repeat the pr body's packaged-client verification.

Native Copy and Cut commands (the desktop Edit menu, webContents.copy())
fire copy/cut events with no keydown, and the server browser surface only
cancelled them, so the remote page never copied. Forward them as the
Ctrl+C/X key press the server already turns into an isolated-world copy,
and skip the browser's own clipboard event after a forwarded keyboard
shortcut so keyboard Copy and Cut still run once.

Chromium runs a script copy or cut command only with transient user
activation, so document.execCommand returned false in headless CI. Click
the surface canvas first, as a real Edit menu click would.

Electron's macOS menu can fire the native cut after the Meta keyup. Every
keyup cleared the pending-shortcut flag, so that late cut forwarded a second
Ctrl+X. Only a keydown, focus or control change now clears it.

…pboard event

A Ctrl or Cmd+C/X keydown now cancels its default, so the browser fires no
copy or cut event after it (Chromium's key binding, Electron's macOS menu
redispatch). The key reaches the page once, and copy and cut events only come
from the Edit menu, which always forwards. This removes the suppression flag
that could swallow a later menu Copy or Cut or miss a late native cut.
