feat(usage): show per-thread and per-project API spend - #26474
T3 Code shows aggregate usage on the Usage page, but nothing tells you what a single thread, or a project, has cost. When the thread is the unit of work, "what did this cost me?" is a question you want answered from the thread itself; today the only way is to open the Usage page and line dates up by hand.
Change
Adds a priced spend read alongside the existing usage scan and surfaces it in the app.
server.getSessionSpend prices a set of provider sessions over the same 92-day window the usage page uses, returning dollars, tokens, unpriced-record counts and scan state. An optional threadIds field lets a caller ask by T3 thread: the server resolves each thread's provider sessions itself, so the client never has to open a stream per thread. Capped reads report truncatedSessions instead of quietly returning a short total.
Thread spend renders in the chat header; project spend renders next to the project name in the same header. Both are muted tabular numbers with a hover breakdown (this thread / including subagents, input-cache-output split, window, "API estimate, not the subscription bill") and an Open Usage link.
A total that can only be a lower bound is marked with a leading ≥, and the popover says why: unpriced records, a partial usage source, or a capped read. Rows where nothing could be priced show tokens rather than hiding the number.
Session-ref joining and dedupe live in @t3tools/shared/usageSessionRefs so server and client agree on which provider ids are billable sessions (Cursor conversation ids, ACP :task: keys and Pi file paths are not).
Deliberately small: one optional RPC field, no orchestration or provider changes, and it reuses the existing scan rather than adding a second one.
Scope and approval
This is a new reporting capability, so the prior-approval rule in CONTRIBUTING.md applies. I know #9015 and #9016 were closed for exactly that reason and point at #13073. Opening it anyway so the design can be judged on the code rather than on a description; happy to drop it if the direction is wrong, or to split the server read from the two UI labels.
Verification
vp run typecheck — clean (36/36 tasks).
vp fmt --check and vp lint — clean on every changed file.
Focused tests — 28 passed: apps/server/src/usage/usageAggregation.test.ts, apps/server/src/usage/usageSessionSpendInput.test.ts, apps/web/src/components/chat/threadSpend.test.ts (session joining, dedupe across repeated rows, lower-bound labelling, cap reporting, loading/empty states).
Manual: ran a dev server against a pruned copy of a real local database (a 7.5M-token Grok session inside the 92-day window) and checked both labels and their hover states on light and dark. Not checked: mobile (no mobile surface for this yet) and relay/tunnel beyond the environment-scoped RPC.
Screenshots
Before (main): no spend anywhere in the header; the Usage page is the only place cost is visible.
After — project spend beside the project name, thread spend on the right of the chat header:

A failed provider scan can make the project total look complete even though its spend is missing. At line 85, spendSourcesIncomplete receives providers only from returned rows, so a provider with no returned rows is excluded from its completeness check; this also hides failures for descendant sessions included in the total. Check completeness against all providers contributing to the requested thread scope, or conservatively mark the total incomplete when that scope is unknown.
The completeness check only considers the current thread's providers, although the popover also displays spend for descendant sessions. For example, with a Codex parent and a Grok subagent, a partial/failed Grok scan is ignored if Codex is complete. buildThreadSpendView still sums the available descendant rows into includingSubagents, and this component shows that understated total without the incomplete-scan warning. Check the providers of all sessions contributing to the inclusive total (or track its completeness separately).

Move the joinableSessionRef test to the shared package.
joinableSessionRef is an alias for joinableUsageSessionRef from @t3tools/shared/usageSessionRefs. This test checks shared join rules, such as the driver table, :task: keys, and Pi path IDs, through a web re-export. The testing rules say to test at the lowest layer that fails on main and to avoid duplicated coverage. Put these cases next to usageSessionRefs.ts and import the helper directly. Skip this move if the shared package already has equivalent tests.
As per path instructions: "Hold changed tests to the rules in docs/internals/testing.md", which asks to "test at the lowest layer that fails on main, and avoid duplicating coverage."

Use the components/ui primitives for these two raw controls.
The trigger at ThreadSpendControl.tsx lines 115-122 is a raw <button> styled like a ghost control. It uses hover:bg-accent, hover:text-foreground, and a focus ring. The ghost-muted variant of Button in apps/web/src/components/ui/button.tsx provides the same hover behavior, so render the trigger through Button with that variant and the closest size, xs. The trigger uses h-6, px-1.5, and rounded-md, which do not match any Button size exactly. If that geometry is intentional, keep the classes and add a short comment that says why.
The "Open Usage" button at lines 200-206 is a raw <button> styled as an inline text link. InlineButton in the same module already provides that look. Its default tone uses text-foreground, underline-offset-2, and hover:underline. Use InlineButton rather than Button's link variant, which has different sizing and padding.
Keep self-start on the parent container. It is a layout class, and the components/ui rules place layout classes on the parent.
Suggested fix for "Open Usage"

- <button- type="button"- className="self-start text-foreground underline-offset-2 hover:underline"- onClick={() => void navigate({ to: "/usage" })}- >- Open Usage- </button>+ <InlineButton type="button" onClick={() => void navigate({ to: "/usage" })}>+ Open Usage+ </InlineButton>

Move the thread-to-session resolution into the usage service.
The readSessionSpend helper does multi-step work in ws.ts. It loads thread data, resolves provider sessions, merges and caps them, and then calls the service. The MCP tools, CLI, and scheduled tasks cannot reuse this logic. A test needs a socket. The helper also adds its own Effect.fn("ws.usage.readSessionSpend") span, but request instrumentation already owns the span.
Add readSessionSpend to a domain service that can take ThreadManagementService from the environment. The ws.ts handler should only call service.readSessionSpend(input). Use Effect.annotateCurrentSpan for per-call context.
As per path instructions: "A transport handler should only decode input, call one service method, and map typed errors" and "handlers should not add spans or request metrics".

Require AuthOrchestrationReadScope when threadIds is present.
serverGetSessionSpend needs only AuthDiagnosticsReadScope. The handler in apps/server/src/ws.ts uses input.threadIds to read thread snapshots. It returns the native provider sessionId of each matched thread. Other thread reads in this map require AuthOrchestrationReadScope.
A session with diagnostics:read but without orchestration:read can send arbitrary thread IDs. It can then confirm that threads exist and read their provider session IDs. This bypasses the scope boundary.
Add a payload-dependent rule to requiredScopesForRpcCall. This is the same pattern as serverRetryResourceTelemetry. Confirm that a multi-scope result requires all listed scopes.
constdecodeSessionSpendInput=Schema.decodeUnknownSync(UsageSessionSpendInput);// inside requiredScopesForRpcCall, before the guarded lookup:if(method===WS_METHODS.serverGetSessionSpend){const{ threadIds }=decodeSessionSpendInput(payload);returnthreadIds!==undefined&&threadIds.length>0
? [AuthDiagnosticsReadScope,AuthOrchestrationReadScope]
: [AuthDiagnosticsReadScope];}
Also gate the thread and project spend UI on the same scope. ProjectSpendLabel currently checks only AuthDiagnosticsReadScope.

Use the provider-thread record read and bound threadIds.
getThreadSnapshot loads the complete projection for every requested thread, although this path only needs providerThreads. threadIds has no length limit, so a caller can trigger unbounded snapshot reads. The session cap runs only after those reads complete.
Lookup failures become null and are silently omitted. The result does not report this as partial, so the displayed total can be incomplete without the existing lower-bound indicator.
Do not silently discard lookup failures. Surface them as an explicit partial or error state.

A capped thread list does not mark the project total as a lower bound.
The comment at Line 30 says that past MAX_QUERIED_THREADS the label stays a lower bound. .slice(0, MAX_QUERIED_THREADS) drops older threads silently. partial only reflects truncatedSessions and source status. The server does not see the dropped threads. A project with more than 150 live threads therefore shows an undercounted total without ≥.
Record whether the slice dropped any threads. Add that to partial.

The empty view drops scan state, so a first or partial scan shows "No usage yet".
When none of the thread's sessions match a priced row, buildThreadSpendView returns { kind: "empty" } before it uses input.partial or input.refreshing. ThreadSpendControl then shows "No usage yet" and "No usage yet for this thread." These strings also appear when a source for the thread's provider is partial, failed, or still refreshing. In those states the usage can exist but has not been read yet.
Carry partial and refreshing on the empty variant, as ProjectSpendView does with partial. Have the control show a scanning or incomplete message in that case.

1. Completeness now matches the request, not the rows that came back (ProjectSpendLabel.tsx, ThreadSpendControl.tsx)
The coverage check moved to the server, which is the only place that knows which sessions a request reaches: UsageSessionSpendResult.incomplete is set when a source covering a priced session is partial or failed. That covers a provider that failed and so returned no rows, and it covers subagent sessions because the thread read requests them too. The client-side provider-matching helper is gone.
2. Thread resolution no longer loads full transcripts (ws.ts)
The project read goes through a new getThreadProviderContext (projection store -> orchestrator -> thread management service), which returns { thread, providerSessions, providerThreads } instead of the full snapshot with turn items and tool output, so pricing 150 threads no longer retains their transcripts.
3. Failed lookups are no longer silent (ws.ts)
Each failure is counted and returned as unresolvedThreads. The label adds the ≥ marker and the popover says how many threads could not be resolved, instead of reporting a short total as exact.
4. Client-side truncation is counted (ProjectSpendLabel.tsx)
Threads past the 150 cap are included in partial, and the tooltip says "Only the newest 150 threads are priced; N are not counted."
5. null and [] no longer collapse (threadSpend.ts, spendSessions.tsx) sessionListKey keeps "not loaded" distinct from "loaded, no joinable sessions", so a subagent that resolves to nothing stops looking unloaded and the including-subagents total is not suppressed. The key function moved into threadSpend.ts so it is unit-tested.
Verification on 9d549aa: vp run typecheck 36/36, vp fmt --check and vp lint clean on changed files, focused tests 45 passed (usageSessionSpendInput.test.ts +2 cases for the coverage rule, threadSpend.test.ts +2 for the read flags and the session key, usageAggregation.test.ts, plus the AgentAwarenessRelay.test.ts service double extended for the new member). UI renders unchanged in the normal case; the new text only appears when a read is capped or a source is incomplete.

Load provider threads for thread-ID spend lookups.
ProjectionStoreV2.getThreadProviderContext returns providerThreads: [] when targetInstanceId is omitted. Orchestrator.ts calls this read with only threadId, so thread-ID spend requests receive no provider threads. readSessionSpend in ws.ts builds spend references only from providerThreads. A successful empty list adds no references and does not increment unresolvedThreads. Thread-ID spend lookups therefore resolve no sessions, and the totals are not marked as lower bounds.
Return this thread's provider-thread records when targetInstanceId is omitted, or pass the instance that the spend path needs. Then add a test that starts from a thread ID and asserts that the spend references include that thread's sessions.

Use the partial flag on the empty view in the label.
buildProjectSpendView returns { kind: "empty", partial }, but the label ignores partial here. The label always shows "no project usage". If a usage source is still scanning, partial, or failed, usage can exist that was not read. The label then states that no usage exists.
Show a neutral label when view.partial is true, for example "project usage incomplete". Keep "no project usage" for a complete read.

Pushed d0d5a77. Two of the four CodeRabbit findings were already fixed in the commit it reviewed; the other two are now fixed.
Scope check (RpcAuthorization.ts:108) — fixed. A payload-dependent rule now requires AuthOrchestrationReadScope alongside AuthDiagnosticsReadScope when threadIds is non-empty, following the serverRetryResourceTelemetry pattern. A read by explicit session stays diagnostics-only. Covered by a new case in RpcAuthorization.test.ts that calls the RPC both ways with only diagnostics scope and asserts the thread-scoped call is refused and the handler is not reached.
Provider-thread read and bounded threadIds (ws.ts:1894) — the snapshot read and the swallowed failures were already fixed in d0d5a77's parent; the remaining part is done here. UsageSessionSpendInput.threadIds is now capped at MAX_SESSION_SPEND_THREADS (150) in the contract, and the web reads that constant instead of keeping its own copy, so the client cap and the schema cannot drift.
Project total at the thread cap (ProjectSpendLabel.tsx:54) — already fixed; uncountedThreads is part of partial and the tooltip says "Only the newest 150 threads are priced; N are not counted." The review comment quoted the pre-fix hunk.
empty view dropped scan state (threadSpend.ts:200) — fixed. The empty variant now carries partial and refreshing, the chip reads "Scanning" while a scan is running and "Usage unknown" when a source was incomplete, and the popover explains which of the two it is instead of asserting "No usage yet". A test case covers the carried state.
Verification on d0d5a77: vp run typecheck 36/36, vp fmt --check and vp lint clean on all 25 changed files, focused tests 40 passed (RpcAuthorization.test.ts +1, threadSpend.test.ts +1 case plus the updated empty-view shape, usageSessionSpendInput.test.ts).

Major · Project spend from threadIds is always empty, so project headers omit all… · ws.ts:1878-1892
apps/server/src/ws.ts:1878-1892 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift
Project spend from threadIds is always empty, so project headers omit all thread-resolved usage.
ProjectSpendLabel sends only threadIds and sends sessions: []. The readSessionSpend handler at apps/server/src/ws.ts:1874-1892 builds its usage query only from input.sessions plus resolved. resolved is filled only from context.providerThreads. The handler calls getThreadProviderContext(threadId) with no target instance. That call passes through ThreadManagementService and Orchestrator unchanged. The projection resolver then sets threadRows to [] when the target is undefined, so providerThreads is always empty on this path. Every thread in a project header request resolves to no usage references, and the project total excludes all of that thread usage. No other input supplies sessions for this request, so the project header has no alternate path to priced rows.
Use the thread's own provider instance as the target for this lookup. Do not map internal providerSessions IDs to usage references, because usage requires driver and nativeThreadRef. Changing the default inside the projection resolver would also change every other caller that omits the target. One such caller is apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/CheckpointRestoreSafety.ts:52, and its use of the result was not inspected. Prefer a change at the ws.ts call site, and first confirm how that handler can obtain the thread's provider instance.

Adds a priced spend read (dollars + tokens) alongside the existing usage
scan, and surfaces it in the app: thread spend in the chat header and
project spend next to the project name, both with a hover breakdown.

Pushed ae174c4. Both findings were real; one was a regression I introduced in the previous push.
Thread-id spend lookups resolved nothing (Orchestrator.ts:13334) — confirmed and fixed. ProjectionStoreV2.getThreadProviderContext only reads provider-thread rows when targetInstanceId is passed; the spend path called it with just a thread id, so it got providerThreads: [], added no references, and reported success. Both labels showed "no usage" with no lower-bound marker.
The fix drops the extra service member and uses the existing getThreadRecords(threadId, ["providerThreads"]) read, which is the light record read (it skips turn items and tool output) and is already used elsewhere for provider threads. The orchestrator/thread-management additions from the last push are removed.
Test added as asked: Orchestrator.control-reads.test.ts → "resolves a thread's usage sessions from its thread id" creates a thread plus a provider thread with a strong native ref, reads it the way the RPC does, and asserts the spend references include that thread's session.
I also ran it end to end after the fix, since this class of bug is invisible to typecheck: a dev server on a pruned copy of a real database, project label next to the project name reading $1.26 · 5.35M and the thread label reading the same for the thread it describes.
empty project view ignored partial (ProjectSpendLabel.tsx:101) — fixed. The label now reads "project spend scanning" while a scan is running, "project usage incomplete" when a read was partial, and "no project usage" only for a complete read; the tooltip explains the two non-final states. The empty view carries refreshing as well, matching the thread view.
Verification on ae174c4: vp run typecheck 36/36, vp fmt --check and vp lint clean on all 25 changed files, focused tests 61 passed (Orchestrator.control-reads.test.ts +1, threadSpend.test.ts +1 plus updated shapes, RpcAuthorization.test.ts, AgentAwarenessRelay.test.ts).

Test the thread-ID spend read through its current RPC path.
The added assertion covers projection storage and sessionRefsForProviderThreads, but it does not exercise the thread-resolution branch in readSessionSpend. Add a focused test for WS_METHODS.serverGetSessionSpend that asserts resolved provider sessions affect spend and that a failed thread lookup increments unresolvedThreads.
A UsageService-level test is not applicable to the current implementation. Thread resolution currently belongs to the RPC handler in apps/server/src/ws.ts. Move that logic into a service first only if the intended correction is to test it through a service.

Include the lower-bound state in the aria-label.
For a ready view, the aria-label replaces the visible text. It drops the ≥ marker that formatSpendLabel adds when partial or unpricedRecords is set. A screen reader user hears an exact total for a total that is only a lower bound. The "Some usage could not be read" text exists only in the tooltip.
Add "at least" to the label when the total is a lower bound. The same rule that sets the ≥ prefix in formatSpendLabel can decide this, so the spoken and visible values stay in step.
Also add spendIsPartial to the import from ./threadSpend.
Based on learnings: status must be conveyed through "an aria-label (or aria-live) conveying the current state to screen readers".

Problem
T3 Code shows aggregate usage on the Usage page, but nothing tells you what a single thread, or a project, has cost. When the thread is the unit of work, "what did this cost me?" is a question you want answered from the thread itself; today the only way is to open the Usage page and line dates up by hand.
Change
Adds a priced spend read alongside the existing usage scan and surfaces it in the app.
server.getSessionSpendprices a set of provider sessions over the same 92-day window the usage page uses, returning dollars, tokens, unpriced-record counts and scan state. An optionalthreadIdsfield lets a caller ask by T3 thread: the server resolves each thread's provider sessions itself, so the client never has to open a stream per thread. Capped reads reporttruncatedSessionsinstead of quietly returning a short total.≥, and the popover says why: unpriced records, a partial usage source, or a capped read. Rows where nothing could be priced show tokens rather than hiding the number.@t3tools/shared/usageSessionRefsso server and client agree on which provider ids are billable sessions (Cursor conversation ids, ACP:task:keys and Pi file paths are not).Deliberately small: one optional RPC field, no orchestration or provider changes, and it reuses the existing scan rather than adding a second one.
