fix(server): macOS service keeps its privacy grants across updates - #25999
On macOS, the launchd service started <T3_HOME>/runtime/versions/<version>/t3 __service-launcher. TCC stores a non-bundled executable's grants (Full Disk Access, App Management, Screen Recording, Accessibility) under the launch agent program's path. Every t3 update or t3 service install at a new version therefore wrote a new path into the plist: users had to approve again, and another t3 entry piled up in System Settings. Reproduced on main with a darwin install at 1.2.3 and then 1.2.4. The plist program moves from versions/1.2.3/t3 to versions/1.2.4/t3.
Change
On launchd only, the service copies the installed version directory to a fixed <T3_HOME>/runtime/launcher/ and points ProgramArguments at runtime/launcher/t3 __service-launcher. The launcher still starts serve from runtime/versions/<v>/t3, so only the path TCC sees stays fixed. The directory is a field on the launchd BootServiceManager, so systemd units and the Linux handoff are unchanged.
The copy uses cp -c -pR, which clones on APFS, and falls back to fs.copy. It goes into a per-install staging directory under runtime/.
The copy is swapped in by two renames, in an uninterruptible region. A running launcher's binary is never written in place, and a cancelled update cannot leave the plist pointing at a missing program. Two overlapping installs can only ever leave a complete copy, because a rename onto a non-empty launcher/ fails. A failed swap restores the previous copy.
status reports the service as not current when the launcher copy is missing or of another version, so t3 update repairs it. t3 service uninstall removes the copy and any staging leftovers.
The background service user guide now says the Full Disk Access grant carries over updates.
Triaged via the automated issue flow; GitCafe issue https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/issues/17225. Two users confirmed the root cause in the issue thread, and one tested this fixed-path launcher shape on macOS 27 in their fork.
Verification
Red test boot service install > keeps the launch agent program at one path across version updates fails on the test-only commit 58de11d (Expected: …/runtime/versions/1.2.3/t3, Received: …/runtime/versions/1.2.4/t3): red.txt
At head f4af379, bootService.test.ts, cli/update.test.ts, cli/uninstall.test.ts and cloud/pinnedRuntime.test.ts pass, 55/55: green-final.txt. The new tests cover:
the stable path;
a swap that leaves an open handle on the old binary intact, with the executable mode kept;
rollback when the rename fails;
cleanup when the copy fails;
an update interrupted mid-swap;
two overlapping installs.
Each of the last three fails with its fix reverted.
Runtime check on Linux: a real release runtime directory, copied the same way into runtime/launcher/, runs from the fixed path (t3 --version), with mode 755 and its sentinel intact: runtime.txt
vp run check:changed: format, lint, knip, graphql, typecheck and tests pass.
Evidence table: not applicable. This is a server-only change with no rendered surface; the red test and the transcripts above are the proof.
cannot-verify macos. Nothing ran on a Mac. A manual check on a Developer ID–signed release should confirm:
Run t3 service install, grant Full Disk Access to ~/.t3/runtime/launcher/t3, run t3 update to a newer build, then have an agent read ~/Documents. Expect no new prompt and no new t3 entry in System Settings.
cp -c clones on APFS (du of runtime/launcher stays small).
During t3 update without restarting, the still-running service keeps its grants until the restart.
Existing installs move to the fixed path on their first update from a build with this fix, so users grant access once more at that point. Ad-hoc signed builds still change code identity on every build.

Takeover
No code changes; evidence and verification added below.
Evidence
Server-only change, so the captures are ordered runtime transcripts of the real BootService layer: real filesystem, real cp and real t3 --version validation, with launchctl/systemctl intercepted and their argv logged. The platform is forced to darwin (or linux for K8). Release rows use the native Linux release runtimes 0.1.1-preview.20261018.3327 (A) and 0.1.3-preview.20261026.3702 (B). A's .install-complete was missing from the source copy, so it was rebuilt in scratch from the binary's own --version. Harness rows use labelled synthetic runtimes with named faults or Deferred barriers.
Environment: Linux x86_64 (fs-14), kernel 6.1.102, Node v24.22.1 (release rows) / v26.12.1 (harness rows), GNU cp 9.4, ext4. Each checkpoint prints the revision SHA, recorded manager argv, plist ProgramArguments (or ExecStart), launcher tree with modes and hashes, sentinels, state, restart marker and status.
On darwin, ProgramArguments stays at runtime/launcher/t3 across A→B; at base it moves from versions/A/t3 to versions/B/t3. An open handle on the old launcher still reads A after the swap.
On darwin, a missing or other-version launcher now makes status report not current, and reconciliation republishes it.
Linux/systemd: normalized diff empty; no launcher is published or removed.
Limits observed: uninstall without a plist leaves launcher/ and staging leftovers; ignored cleanup faults leave leftovers; if promotion and rollback both fail, the previous launcher can be lost. The fs.copy fallback turns relative symlinks into absolute links to the versioned source (the release runtimes contain none).
Mode: evidence-only, no code changes; head 7a90b56 unchanged and merges cleanly with main.
Proof audit pass 1: 31-row matrix (22 minimum). Capture round 1 was INSUFFICIENT: synthetic runtimes used where release runtimes were required, plus a C05 temp-path hash diff. Round 2 recaptured with release runtimes. Pass 2 re-check: SUFFICIENT, with an independent K7 replay showing no behavioural delta.
28/31 rows captured; unverified: cannot-verify macos for M01 (real launchctl), M02 (TCC grant persistence, signed Mach-O survival) and M03 (APFS clone).
bootService.test.ts 37/37 at head; CI 39/39 green on 7a90b56.

… version
These tests reproduce #17225: on macOS each service install
at a new version writes runtime/versions/<version>/t3 into the plist, so TCC
grants keyed to that path are lost on every update.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
macOS TCC keys a non-bundled launch agent's privacy grants to its program
path, and the plist named runtime/versions/<version>/t3, so every update
dropped Full Disk Access and other grants (#17225).
On launchd, install now copies the installed version directory to a fixed
runtime/launcher and points the plist there. The copy clones on APFS, is
staged in launcher.next and swapped in by rename so a running launcher is
never written into, and the previous copy is restored if the swap fails.
Status reports a missing or stale copy as not current, and uninstall
removes it. systemd output is unchanged.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…APFS
The launch agent's launcher publish could be interrupted between its two
renames, leaving the plist pointing at a missing program. The renames and
their restore now run uninterruptibly.
The copy used fs.cp with COPYFILE_FICLONE, which libuv only honours on
Linux, so macOS copied the whole runtime. It now runs `cp -c -pR` (APFS
clone, plain copy where unsupported) and falls back to Effect's fs.copy.
A failed copy no longer leaves launcher.next behind, and the mode test
fixture is executable so lost permissions would fail it.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Every install staged into the shared launcher.next and launcher.prev and
deleted both first, so a second install could wipe the first one's staged
copy mid-swap and leave launcher/ without t3. Each publish now stages in
its own launcher.next-* temp directory, never deletes another's, and
cleans up only its own; uninstall removes launcher and any launcher.next-*
leftovers.

Walkthrough
macOS launchd services now use a stable runtime launcher path. Install stages and publishes the pinned runtime there, and status checks both runtime copies. Linux services continue to use the versioned runtime path. The troubleshooting guidance describes the stable path and the Full Disk Access grant required when an older service moves to it.

Explanation
The title "fix(server): macOS service keeps its privacy grants across updates" matches the main change. The PR keeps the launchd program path fixed at runtime/launcher/t3, so TCC grants (Full Disk Access and others) survive version updates. It uses a conventional commit prefix and names the affected component and the user-visible result. It is specific and does not list files.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue [#17225] requires stable macOS service executable paths across version updates. launchdManager sets launcherDir to runtime/launcher, and install publishes the pinned runtime there before it writes the service unit. The unit therefore uses one stable t3 path. Staging, rename-based replacement, rollback, cleanup, and current-status checks cover update safety. Tests cover stable paths, copy failure, rollback, interrupted swaps, overlapping installs, executable mode, and uninstall cleanup. Linux systemd behavior remains versioned. The documentation records the permission behavior. No macOS runtime test was run, but this is not required to establish the coding implementation and automated test coverage.

The changes remain within issue [#17225]. The service code implements the stable launchd path and safe launcher lifecycle. The tests verify the implementation, including failure and concurrency cases. The documentation explains the resulting Full Disk Access behavior. The diff does not change the separate desktop permission behavior, Linux systemd path, or Linux handoff.

Independent macOS verification of 7a90b56 (macOS 26.7.2, Apple Silicon, APFS, Node 26.8.2).
Tests: bootService, cli/update, cli/uninstall, pinnedRuntime, serviceLauncher and serviceLauncherClient pass at head, 74 passed, 1 Linux-only skip.
Merge with main (12ec17c): one conflict in bootService.ts, three mechanical hunks (xdgConfigHome/systemdUnitDir args from #29244, runtimePaths moved by #23239). Resolved diff against main equals this PR. Same tests on the merged tree: 96 passed, 2 platform skips. vp run --filter t3 typecheck passes.
M03: cp -c -pR of a real 336 MiB 0.1.7 nightly runtime used 4.7 MiB of free space (APFS clone). Tree identical, mode 755 kept, codesign -v --strict passes, the copied t3 --version runs.
M02 (partial): a running signed binary survives the stage, rename, rename, delete swap. The runtime is Developer ID signed (team ARK85ZXQ4Z), so its designated requirement is the same across versions.
Real service path, on a second Mac: I ran the same layout as a local bridge (copy versions/0.1.7-nightly.20261103.4119/ to runtime/launcher/, point the plist's first argument there) and restarted with t3 service restart. launchd then ran runtime/launcher/t3 __service-launcher, its child was runtime/versions/0.1.7-nightly.20261103.4119/t3 serve, and the server answered HTTP 200. So 0.1.7 already accepts __service-launcher from outside versions/.
Not run: the TCC grant check across an update, because that needs a System Settings approval.
Notes, none blocking:
cp is resolved through PATH (bootService.ts:620). With GNU coreutils first in PATH, -c is rejected and every install makes a full copy. /bin/cp on darwin would avoid that.
Process death between the two renames (bootService.ts:650-652) leaves no runtime/launcher while the plist points at it. The old copy stays in launcher.next-*/previous and is not restored. status does flag it.
The test mock always rejects cp -c (bootService.test.ts:111), so the clone branch that macOS takes is not covered by the suite.
When editing the plist array by hand, plutil -replace ProgramArguments.0 inserts rather than replaces. Not an issue for this PR, which renders the whole plist, but worth knowing for anyone bridging locally.

Problem
On macOS, the launchd service started
<T3_HOME>/runtime/versions/<version>/t3 __service-launcher. TCC stores a non-bundled executable's grants (Full Disk Access, App Management, Screen Recording, Accessibility) under the launch agent program's path. Everyt3 updateort3 service installat a new version therefore wrote a new path into the plist: users had to approve again, and anothert3entry piled up in System Settings. Reproduced onmainwith a darwin install at 1.2.3 and then 1.2.4. The plist program moves fromversions/1.2.3/t3toversions/1.2.4/t3.Change
<T3_HOME>/runtime/launcher/and pointsProgramArgumentsatruntime/launcher/t3 __service-launcher. The launcher still startsservefromruntime/versions/<v>/t3, so only the path TCC sees stays fixed. The directory is a field on the launchdBootServiceManager, so systemd units and the Linux handoff are unchanged.cp -c -pR, which clones on APFS, and falls back tofs.copy. It goes into a per-install staging directory underruntime/.launcher/fails. A failed swap restores the previous copy.statusreports the service as not current when the launcher copy is missing or of another version, sot3 updaterepairs it.t3 service uninstallremoves the copy and any staging leftovers.Scope and approval
