fix(client): a thread whose subscription dies on a defect resubscribes instead of staying blank - #25919
When a thread's live subscription ended on a defect, nothing subscribed again on that screen. One example of such a defect is a socket snapshot that fails to decode, which the RPC client turns into a request-scoped Die. The thread stayed at "Could not synchronize the thread." with no data. For a new thread the sidebar did not list yet, web and desktop showed a fully blank conversation pane. Only selecting another thread and coming back recovered it, because that builds a fresh subscription. The reporter reproduced this with the HTTP snapshot failing and one corrupted socket snapshot: the pane stayed blank for 45 s with exactly one subscription request.
Change
makeEnvironmentThreadState (packages/client-runtime/src/state/threads.ts) now catches any non-interrupt end of the thread subscription. It keeps the existing error state and subscribes again on the same scope after a backoff. It does what reselecting the thread already did. The backoff reuses the expected-failure schedule from rpc/client.ts, moved into a shared subscriptionRetryDelay helper: 250 ms, doubling to a 30 s cap. It resets once a batch has been applied again, so an item that crashes on every attempt settles at one retry every 30 s. A defect thrown while applying items takes the same path; before, it silently stopped updates. Interruption, such as leaving the thread, still ends the loop. subscribeDynamicMapped's failure classification, the shell subscription and the server are unchanged.
New test resubscribes after a snapshot decode defect ends the thread subscription (#23041) in packages/client-runtime/src/state/threads-sync.test.ts. The thread falls back to the socket, the subscription dies with a Die, and the test advances the TestClock by 60 s. On main it fails with expected 1 to be 2: still one subscription. With the fix it resubscribes and applies the next snapshot as live.
vp test run packages/client-runtime/src/state/threads-sync.test.ts packages/client-runtime/src/state/threads-atoms.test.ts packages/client-runtime/src/rpc/client.test.ts: 52/52 pass. vp run check:changed: format, lint, knip, typecheck (7 packages) and tests pass.
This is a state recovery fix and changes no component markup or styling, so it is proved by the failing test rather than captures. Proof audit notes: fixture matrix. Review diagnostics for the exact backoff delays, cap and reset, and for closing the scope during a backoff: audit-evidence.tar.gz.
cannot-verify windows: the original trigger on Windows desktop was never captured and is not reproduced. This fixes the recovery gap the reporter isolated, not a confirmed root cause of that incident.
Not checked: mobile, which uses separate unavailable and draft-redirect handling. Recovery there is not claimed. A defect thrown from applyItems has no dedicated test.

…vers after a defect
A snapshot decode defect ends the thread's subscribeThread fiber; the
state stays empty with "Could not synchronize the thread." and no new
subscription is issued within the same scope and session.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A defect on the thread detail subscription (for example one socket snapshot
that fails to decode) ended the forked fiber, leaving the thread empty with
"Could not synchronize the thread." until the user reselected it.
The thread state now resubscribes in the same scope after a defect, with the
same capped exponential backoff expected failures use (250 ms doubling to
30 s), reset once a batch applies. Interruptions are not retried, and a
defect from applying items takes the same path so a dead subscription never
sits behind a live status.

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This localized client-runtime fix adds exponential-backoff resubscription after thread subscription defects and includes a regression test for recovery. Existing subscription retry behavior and product defaults remain unchanged.

Thread subscriptions now retry after non-interrupt stream defects. The retry delay uses a shared capped exponential backoff helper. Tests verify that a later snapshot restores thread state and clears the synchronization error.
The RPC client exports subscriptionRetryDelay, which doubles the base delay per retry and caps it at 30 seconds. Expected-failure subscription retries now use this helper.
Thread subscription retry and recovery test packages/client-runtime/src/state/threads.ts, packages/client-runtime/src/state/threads-sync.test.ts
Thread subscriptions retry after non-interrupt defects and set the synchronization error. Successful batch application resets the defect retry count. The test injects a snapshot decode defect, verifies a retry after 60 seconds, and checks that a later snapshot restores live state and clears the error.
pingdotgg/t3code#4589 — The PR retries thread subscriptions after non-interrupt defects; the issue concerns subscriptions that stop delivering updates while the connection remains healthy.

The change makes thread subscriptions recover from defects instead of staying blank, which fixes the main problem. Before merging, the error state should persist until recovery is actually confirmed, the event cursor should not skip an event that failed to apply, and the raw defect text should be removed from the warning log.

Explanation
[#23041] Requirement: the selected thread loads without navigating away and back, and failures show an understandable state. The reproduced failure is a thread subscription that ends on a defect (for example, an undecodable socket snapshot). The reviewed head covers this path. In packages/client-runtime/src/state/threads.ts, Effect.catchCause now handles each non-interrupt end of the thread subscription. The handler keeps the existing error state ("Could not synchronize the thread.") and calls followThread again after a delay from subscriptionRetryDelay. Applied batches reset defectRetries. Interrupts still end the loop. The helper subscriptionRetryDelay in packages/client-runtime/src/rpc/client.ts gives 250 ms doubling to a 30 s cap. The subscribeDynamicMapped classification is unchanged. The raw summary reports a new test, resubscribes after a snapshot decode defect ends the thread subscription (#23041), in threads-sync.test.ts. It reports a failure on main and a pass with the fix. I did not inspect the test diff, so this result relies on that summary. The issue does not confirm the original Windows trigger. The PR does not claim that it fixes that trigger. It covers the recovery gap that the issue reproduced. Defects from applyItems use the same path, but have no dedicated test. Mobile recovery is not claimed.

Explanation
The whole-PR diff against the merge base changes three source files: packages/client-runtime/src/state/threads.ts, packages/client-runtime/src/rpc/client.ts, and packages/client-runtime/src/state/threads-sync.test.ts. In rpc/client.ts, the new exported subscriptionRetryDelay replaces an inline delay calculation with identical math (base * 2^retries, capped at MAX_EXPECTED_FAILURE_RETRY_DELAY_MS). This is a supporting refactor, and threads.ts uses it. In threads.ts, the change adds the defect-retry loop, the THREAD_SUBSCRIPTION_RETRY_DELAY constant, and a logWarning. All of these serve the thread-subscription recovery in #23041. The test harness change supports the new test. The PR does not change the shell subscription, server code, or mobile code. I found no unrelated change in the reviewed files. The file listing I read was truncated, so I did not check the full tree for other changed files. The whole-PR diff returned only the three files named above, through the summaries and the threads.ts and client.ts hunks I read.

Remove raw defect text from the warning annotation.
If a decode error contains a rejected thread payload, Cause.pretty(cause) copies that payload into logs. The annotation is also unbounded. Log a bounded failure category instead. As per coding guidelines, “Attributes and log annotations stay bounded: no raw payloads … or arbitrary defect text.” (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Do not resume past an event that failed to apply.
applyEventsLocked sets lastSequence before applying fresh events. If event projection defects, the retry sends that cursor as afterSequence, so replay can omit the failed event. Advance the cursor only after application succeeds, or retry from the last committed cursor.

Keep the synchronization error until the replacement subscription confirms recovery.
After a defect, the retry reruns the subscription-input builder. When cached data exists and the server does not send a completion marker, that builder sets status to "live" and clears error before the replacement subscription delivers any item. If the replacement subscription stays silent, the thread shows as live with no error, although synchronization has not recovered. This conflicts with the PR's stated intent to retain the existing error state during the retry.
Keep the error set during the retry. Clear it only after a valid snapshot, event, or completion confirms recovery. Scope the change to the defect retry so that ordinary reselection keeps its current reset behavior.

Die. The thread stayed at "Could not synchronize the thread." with no data. For a new thread the sidebar did not list yet, web and desktop showed a fully blank conversation pane. makeEnvironmentThreadState(packages/client-runtime/src/state/threads.ts) now catches any non-interrupt end of the thread subscription. It keeps the existing error state and subscribes again on the same scope after a backoff. It does what reselecting the thread already did. The backoff reuses the expected-failure schedule fromrpc/client.ts, moved into a sharedsubscriptionRetryDelayhelper: 250 ms, doubling to a 30 s cap. It resets once a batch has been applied again, so an item that crashes on every attempt settles at one retry every 30 s. A defect thrown while applying items takes the same path; before, it silently stopped updates. Interruption, such as leaving the thread, still ends the loop.subscribeDynamicMapped's failure classification, the shell subscription and the server are unchanged.Scope and approval
