Problem

In the desktop app, pressing fullscreen on a video embedded in a chat message only fills the app window. On Windows the taskbar and the window controls stay visible.

This is a regression from #16961. That PR set disableHtmlFullscreenWindowResize on the main window so fullscreen inside a preview browser tab stays inside the window, and the same flag also confined the app's own fullscreen elements.

Change

Electron mirrors a <webview> guest's fullscreen onto the embedder and checks the embedder's own flag, so the main window has to keep opting out. The preload now reports when the app's own document has a fullscreen element. The main process then puts the window into OS fullscreen and restores it when the element leaves fullscreen.

  • A preview guest's fullscreen shows up in the app document as its <webview>. The preload ignores it, so preview fullscreen still stays inside the window as fix(desktop): browser tab fixes for fullscreen, shortcuts, links, reload and hidden tabs #16961 intended.
  • A window the user had already made fullscreen (F11 or the menu) is left as is. Leaving OS fullscreen some other way while a video is fullscreen hands the window back to the user.
  • macOS finishes leaving fullscreen after setFullScreen(false) returns. A video that re-enters fullscreen during that animation still takes the screen, because the window tells its own exit apart from the user's.
  • Each document reports its state on load, so a reload or renderer crash during fullscreen does not leave the window stuck in OS fullscreen.
  • The IPC accepts only a boolean, and only from the main window's own renderer.
  • CI's preload bundle check runs the bundle in a sandbox that had no DOM. It now gets document and window, as a real preload does, since the preload reads document while loading.

Scope and approval

Small, focused fix for an obvious regression: fullscreen on an inline chat video should cover the screen, as it did before #16961. Desktop only. Web uses the browser's native fullscreen and mobile is unaffected.

Verification

Windows 11, dev desktop app (Electron 44.9.3), with a demo video posted inline by an agent in a chat thread.

  • Before: fullscreen fills only the window, with the taskbar and window controls visible. After: the video covers the whole monitor, and Esc restores the maximized window.
  • After: fullscreen on a video in a preview browser tab still stays inside the window.
  • apps/desktop: vp test run src/ipc/methods/window.test.ts passes. The new tests cover taking and returning the screen, leaving a user-chosen fullscreen alone, handing the window back after the user leaves OS fullscreen during playback, and a video returning to fullscreen during an animated (macOS) exit. The last two fail without the fix.
  • vp run check:changed passes.

Not checked: macOS and Linux, packaged builds, and a reload during fullscreen at runtime (the reload path is covered by the startup report only).

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at c3a25ce

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a narrowly scoped desktop regression fix that routes app-owned HTML fullscreen to OS fullscreen while preserving preview webview behavior and user-selected fullscreen. The state transitions are covered by focused tests, with no product-default or static-analysis configuration changes.

Walkthrough

The desktop preload reports HTML fullscreen state to the main process. A new IPC method synchronizes the main window’s OS fullscreen state and distinguishes app fullscreen from guest fullscreen.

Changes: HTML fullscreen synchronization

The preload reports whether a fullscreen element other than a <webview> exists at startup and on fullscreenchange. Desktop IPC registers the sync handler. The preload bundle verifier supplies document and window event targets, with a test for DOM access and event listeners. A window comment describes how app HTML fullscreen reaches OS fullscreen.

The handler validates the event and window, tracks windows it makes fullscreen, and exits fullscreen only for tracked windows. Tests cover entering and leaving app fullscreen, preserving pre-existing fullscreen, and restoring fullscreen after the user exits OS fullscreen during playback.

A narrow macOS fullscreen-transition race remains and can leave chat video fullscreen state out of sync with the window.

Verified in a real dev environment

verified head 2c272dc1fc12e615f0e976227a30d680bf4267ce as-is on this linux boat vm. no source changes or pushes.

  • reproduced on github/main (32ecd71726) in /home/user/main: the native chat-video fullscreen control set document.fullscreenElement to VIDEO, but left the window at 1100 × 780 on a 1920 × 1080 screen, without _NET_WM_STATE_FULLSCREEN.
  • installed each checkout with vp i. launched dev in the background, then used vp run dev:web plus the real electron main process and its single owned backend, with explicit isolated .t3 state. main used electron 44.10.0; the exact pr head uses its pinned electron 44.9.3.
  • created a local git project through the app. a real codex gpt-6.1-sol turn generated the mp4 and html video page and embedded the video in chat. copied that app-created state for matching before/after evidence, then completed another real codex turn on the pr head. no mocked provider, replay, database fixtures, or injected chat messages.
  • on the pr, the same native video control gives VIDEO, 1920 × 1080, and _NET_WM_STATE_FULLSCREEN. native escape restores chat at 1100 × 780 and removes the os fullscreen flag. playback advances normally.
  • preview-video fullscreen reports WEBVIEW in the app document and VIDEO in the guest. it stays inside the 1500 × 900 app window, without os fullscreen. escape restores the preview.
  • f11 fullscreen chosen before playing stays active after leaving video fullscreen. f11 during video fullscreen returns control to the user; entering again with f11 and then leaving the video preserves the user's fullscreen choice.
  • reloading during video fullscreen changes os fullscreen from true to false and restores the original window.
  • drove the actual web app with repository playwright and /usr/bin/google-chrome: opened the thread, played the video, entered html fullscreen, and escaped back to chat.

windows taskbar behavior, macos fullscreen animations, packaged builds, renderer-crash recovery, and native ios/android clients were not exercised on this linux vm. reload recovery was exercised; an actual renderer crash was not. uploaded video playback and seeking were checked in chrome; t3's rendered video player was not available in this verification browser.

The main window opts out of HTML fullscreen resizing so preview pages stay
inside their webview, which also confined the app's own fullscreen elements,
such as chat videos, to the window. The preload now reports the app's own
fullscreen element to the main process, which puts the window into OS
fullscreen and restores it afterwards.

A preview guest's fullscreen shows up in the app document as its <webview>,
so the preload no longer reports it as the app's own fullscreen element.

…exits

A reload or renderer crash never reported the old document's fullscreen exit,
and leaving OS fullscreen with F11 kept the window marked as owned, so a later
video exit could undo fullscreen the user chose.

The fullscreen report reads `document` while the preload loads, as real Electron
preloads can. The CI sandbox had no DOM globals, so the bundle check threw.

…t animation takes the screen again

macOS finishes leaving fullscreen after setFullScreen(false) returns. A video that
re-entered fullscreen in that window was taken for user fullscreen and dropped, or
lost its ownership to the pending leave event. Each window now keeps one leave
listener that tells our own exit apart from the user's.
