Problem

Usage summaries wait for transcript-history scans before displaying totals already saved on disk. Large histories can leave the page waiting even when cached records are available.

Change

Return saved transcript records and saved prices for the client's first request, mark them as refreshing, then use the existing awaited request to show current totals. Reuse the existing retention and deduplication path, and keep pricing metadata paired with the rates used for each summary.

Preserves @hieu-lee's original commit and merges current main. The final diff is five files (+164/-14). The independent parser optimization and concurrent manual pricing refresh were removed; parsing and manual refresh match main.

Verification

  • Cached-read regression reproduced against main, then passed with the fix.
  • Blacksmith vp run check:changed aa11ef6783da81039e6646e2e96941748afb358e: format, lint, both knip passes, generated GraphQL checks, 32 package typechecks and 72 tests passed.
  • Real Chrome client: 30-day, 7-day and 24-hour windows, manual refresh, and 390px viewport. Saved and fresh websocket replies contain identical totals. Two independent code reviews approved the current head with no findings.
  • Unverified: native mobile, Electron, relay/tunnel, and large-history latency. The captures use the same frozen real Codex history and saved prices; they do not establish a measured speedup. Non-transcript readers retain their existing behavior.

Evidence

Before (main service) and after use matching data. The short recording exercises window switches and manual refresh.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This PR changes the default usage-summary flow to show cached totals first and defer transcript-history scanning, while also changing manual refresh and large-line parsing behavior. Because this is a user-visible product-default change that gates substantial runtime work, it requires human review.

Walkthrough

The usage summary API supports cached-first reads. The server can return saved usage and pricing while transcript sources refresh. The client requests an awaited refresh when the initial summary contains a refreshing source.

Changes: Usage Summary and Refresh

Layer / File(s) Summary
Server cached summary and pricing
packages/contracts/src/usage.ts, apps/server/src/usage/UsageService.ts, apps/server/src/usage/UsageService.test.ts
UsageSummaryInput adds preferCached. The server loads saved rates for cached-preference reads, marks transcript sources as refreshing without scanning their directories, and captures pricing for each summary. Tests cover pricing consistency during a rates refresh and cached usage across a restart.
Client cached-first request
packages/client-runtime/src/state/server.ts, packages/client-runtime/src/state/serverUsage.test.ts
The client sets preferCached: true on the initial request. When the summary has a refreshing source, it requests an awaited refresh. The test checks both request options.

@juliusmarminge could you review this Usage performance fix? It shows saved totals promptly while refreshing current usage and speeds up large transcript reads.

Local validation passed (107 tests), and CodeRabbit reported no actionable findings.

This would help our large-history case. On Linux with 0.1.4-nightly.20261027.3783, one usage request took about 91 seconds, with about 86 seconds in UsageService.collectDirs. The next request took about 5 seconds. Both succeeded.

The persisted scan cache is about 100 MiB and tracks roughly 28,800 transcript files and 984,000 usage records. We added the measurements to #7088.

We have not run this branch, so this is evidence for the problem it addresses, not validation of the fix. Showing saved totals first would avoid leaving the page waiting for that full scan.

thanks @hieu-lee. the cached-first response fits the existing client flow and preserves saved totals while a fresh scan completes. i kept your commit, merged current main, and narrowed this to five files (+164/-14).

the final diff keeps the optional preferCached request, saved pricing, and cached/fresh client flow. it reuses the existing retained-record aggregation instead of walking the cache twice. pricing metadata remains paired with the rates used for totals. i dropped the independent oversized-line parser optimization and concurrent manual pricing refresh, including their test changes. manual refresh and parsing now match main.

verification:

  • reproduced the cached-read regression against main, then passed the same regression with the fix.

  • real chrome client: 30-day, 7-day and past-24-hour windows, manual refresh, and 390px viewport. websocket replies show saved totals with refreshing, followed by fresh totals with the same 2,846,440 tokens. captures use the same frozen copy of this task's actual codex history and saved prices.
  • two independent read-only reviews approved 7b6307bb51aa975976adc0fe5172c05fa9bf11d2, with no findings.
  • unverified: native mobile, electron, relay/tunnel, and a large-history latency comparison. these captures prove behavior and matching totals, not a measured speedup. non-transcript readers keep their existing behavior.

2026-11-01 merge update: merged current main (955e2bfbb5c0) into the existing head without rebasing. head is a33b0c4df0031fb5aef82fef4b1d4798039c33c6. the only conflict placed new tests at the same location; retained both cached-first tests and main's compressed-transcript test. the final product diff remains five files (+164/-14).

blacksmith vp run check:changed 955e2bfbb5c092c54ad795c8d379fec99702a6b5 passed format, lint, both knip checks, graphql generation checks, 35 package typechecks, and 81 tests. repaired the worker's shallow merge history before running checks. two independent read-only reviews approved this exact head with no findings. pushed to the existing contributor branch without force. fresh CI is pending. previous runtime evidence below is for the prior head; native clients and a large-history speed comparison remain unverified.

Verified in a real dev environment

verified unchanged head 7b6307bb51aa975976adc0fe5172c05fa9bf11d2 on this linux boat vm. i read the diff and discussion, installed github/main (32ecd71726fee16f335484c1f95cbce126d461f6) in a separate worktree, then installed and ran the exact pr head. only one dev server ran at a time. chrome was driven by the repo playwright dependency, using /usr/bin/google-chrome.

i added a project pointing at the real git checkout through the app, created threads, and submitted actual codex gpt-6.1-sol turns through the local proxy. the pr turn rendered its final reply in chat. no mocked provider, replay, generated transcript, or demo data was used. codex history was isolated from this verification conversation.

main reproduced the missing cached-first response: opening usage sent one ordinary summary request and returned only fresh totals. the pr returned saved totals with refreshing: true, then the client sent awaitRefresh: true and received fresh totals with refreshing cleared. after a new real turn and server restart, saved totals advanced from 38,663 to 57,978 tokens. 7-day, 30-day, past-24-hour, cost/token switching, and manual refresh all worked; fresh window totals matched at 57,978 tokens.

short websocket transcript from the running browser client:

main: request ordinary summary
main: response 38663 tokens, refreshing=false
pr: request preferCached=true
pr: response 38663 tokens, refreshing=true
pr: request awaitRefresh=true
pr: response 57978 tokens, refreshing=false
7-day / past-24h / manual refresh: 57978 tokens

main and the pr now use different persisted cache formats (v10 and v9). i warmed each with the real history rather than changing either cache format. the matching screenshots below show the same two-turn history before adding the final pr turn. these prove matching totals and the client flow, not a large-history speedup.

blacksmith vp run check:changed aa11ef6783da81039e6646e2e96941748afb358e passed format, lint, both knip passes, generated graphql checks, 32 package typechecks, and 72 tests. the worker needed a depth-4 fetch of this pr to restore its shallow merge base. no code changes or pushes were needed.

before: main usage with 38663 real codex tokens

after: pr usage with the same 38663 real codex tokens

pr: switching windows and metrics and manually refreshing after a real new turn

Not verified

native ios/android, electron, macos/windows, relay/tunnel, other providers, and large-history latency were not exercised. this small history does not reproduce the reported 91-second delay. non-transcript readers still run before the initial response, so this is not evidence of a universal provider speedup. subscription-limit polling is outside the changed summary path and the local proxy does not support that endpoint.

separate main-only observation: its provider transcript completed, but its final assistant text did not appear in chat. the exact pr head did render its final assistant reply. i left that unrelated behavior unchanged.

media rendering limitation: i reopened this comment on both hosts. github renders both screenshots; its external mp4 image does not play inline. git.cafe renders these external media references as links. the actual uploaded mp4 plays to completion and seeks in t3 browser preview and chrome.

Verified in a real dev environment

verified unchanged head 7b6307bb51aa975976adc0fe5172c05fa9bf11d2 on this linux boat vm. i read the diff, description, discussion, and commit authors. the pr is open and has no commits by juliusmarminge or t3dotgg.

i installed github/main (f012fa210dbf464a5ea68fe9071ee377682f8d66) in a separate worktree and reproduced the missing saved-first response there. i then installed and ran the exact pr head. only one dev server ran at a time. playwright from the repo dependencies drove /usr/bin/google-chrome.

i added a project pointing at the real checkout through the app and sent actual codex gpt-6.1-sol turns through the local proxy. codex history was isolated from this verification conversation. no mocks, fixtures, replay, or demo data were used.

main returned only fresh totals after restart. the pr first returned the persisted two-turn total, then the actual client issued the awaited request and showed the new three-turn total. the pr's real provider turn also rendered its final reply in chat.

main, after warming one turn and adding another:
  ordinary request -> 38,661 tokens, refreshing=false, 2 records
pr, after warming two turns and adding another:
  preferCached=true -> 38,661 tokens, refreshing=true, 2 records
  awaitRefresh=true -> 57,976 tokens, refreshing=false, 3 records
7-day / past-24h / 30-day / manual refresh:
  fresh replies -> 57,976 tokens, refreshing=false

saved pricing was loaded after restart. 7-day, past-24-hour, and 30-day windows, cost/token switching, and manual refresh worked. manual refresh called the real rates endpoint and completed the saved/fresh summary requests. the matching before/after screenshots show the same two-turn history. each branch warmed its own native cache format, v10 on current main and v9 on this pr.

before: main with 38661 tokens from two real codex turns

after: pr with the same 38661 tokens from two real codex turns

pr: changing usage windows and metrics and manually refreshing after the third real codex turn

both uploaded screenshots render at 1440x1000. i inspected the captures and recording; the 14-second uploaded recording plays to completion and seeks in t3's browser player. no code changes or pushes were needed. the existing head has 28 successful checks, with none pending or failing. task-owned dev servers and blacksmith workers were stopped.

Not verified

native ios/android, electron, macos/windows, relay/tunnel, other providers, and large-history latency were not exercised. this small real history proves the saved/fresh client flow, not the reported 91-second delay or a measured speedup. subscription limits are outside this summary change; the local proxy returned JSON-RPC -32600 for that endpoint.

fresh vp run check:changed aa11ef6783da81039e6646e2e96941748afb358e through blacksmith-check could not start. the first worker stayed in hydration for about ten minutes; its action log says Warning: phone-home (ready) failed, continuing in degraded mode. a replacement also stayed in hydration. i stopped both, rather than running checks locally. existing green ci is separate from the real-app verification above.

main's live final assistant text initially appeared only after reloading; the pr's new turn rendered its reply live. that main observation was left unchanged.

media rendering limitation: i reopened this comment on both hosts. github renders both screenshots but cannot play the external mp4 inline. git.cafe renders these external media references as links. the uploaded mp4 itself plays and seeks in t3's player.

Refresh rates when a cached read has no refreshing source.

With no configured Claude or Codex instances and Antigravity history in its default data root, UsageService returns no transcript directories but the Antigravity scan still reads that history. Its records have reportedCostUsd: null, so pricing requires model rates.

The cached path loads only saved rates. No source is marked refreshing, so the client sends no awaitRefresh follow-up. Missing or expired rates can persist across cached reads until a separate manual refresh.

Heads up: the parser optimization removed from this PR now has its own PR, #28598 (skip JSON parsing for oversized transcript lines without usage). It is independent of the cached-first change here, so they can land in either order.
