Problem

Forking a very large Codex conversation makes the app-server return the complete historical thread.turns payload, even though forkThread only uses thread metadata from the response. In the report (#24460) that was one response of roughly 590 MB, above the 128 MiB transport limit, which left the fork and other requests stuck until the backend restarted.

forkThread in CodexAdapterV2.ts sends thread/fork without excludeTurns. The resume paths already set it.

Change

forkThread now sends excludeTurns: true with thread/fork. It goes through the typed client.request, because V2ThreadForkParams already has the field. threadId, lastTurnId and the runtime params are unchanged.

Nothing reads turns from the fork response: forkThread uses only response.thread (id and timestamps), history metadata comes from its own thread/read with includeTurns: false, and the revert path pages with thread/turns/list.

The replay harness compares the whole outbound frame, so the recorded thread/fork frames in two Codex replay fixtures (thread_fork_native_prior_turn and thread_merge_back_siblings, loaded by ThreadFork.integration.test.ts and ThreadMergeBack.integration.test.ts) gained "excludeTurns":true, written the same way as the existing thread/resume frames. Only those request lines changed, no responses.

The replay recorder script (apps/server/scripts/record-codex-app-server-replay-fixture.ts) builds its own thread/fork request, so it now sends excludeTurns: true too.

Scope and approval

Fixes #24460, a bug report with measurements and source references. It has no maintainer comment yet. The change is one request parameter on an existing call plus its test and the matching recorded frames, with no other behavior change.

Verification

This is server request shape, so the proof is a test in the existing CodexAdapterV2.test.ts. A new test, "forks at a native turn without asking Codex for the historical turns", replays a fork and expects the outbound frame to carry lastTurnId together with excludeTurns: true. The existing fork fallback test's expected frame now includes excludeTurns: true as well.

Checks I ran on this change before it was rebased onto current main (not re-run on the rebased head):

  • vp test run apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/Adapters/CodexAdapterV2.test.ts -t "fork", with and without the source change. Without it, both fork tests fail with a replay frame mismatch (expected excludeTurns: true, received none).
  • vp test run on CodexAdapterV2.test.ts, ThreadFork.integration.test.ts, ThreadMergeBack.integration.test.ts and CodexReplayFixtures.integration.test.ts, with and without the CodexAdapterV2.ts change.
  • vp lint and vp fmt --check on the two changed .ts files, and vp run --filter ./apps/server typecheck.

On the current head, after the recorder change:

  • vp test run on CodexAdapterV2.test.ts (109 passed), ThreadFork.integration.test.ts (4 passed), ThreadMergeBack.integration.test.ts (2 passed) and CodexReplayFixtures.integration.test.ts (24 passed), from apps/server.
  • vp fmt --check and vp lint on the recorder script, and tsc --noEmit on the recorder script with a tsconfig that extends apps/server/tsconfig.json (no errors).

Not checked: I did not run a real Codex app-server. The typed fork response still requires thread.turns as an array, and I assumed it decodes with turns: [] as the recorded thread/resume response with excludeTurns does; no real thread/fork response with excludeTurns is recorded. readThreadSnapshot also reads a full history (thread/read with includeTurns: true); I left it out as a separate problem.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at 0f6d5ff

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a focused Codex adapter fix that prevents fork responses from hydrating the entire historical thread while preserving fork metadata and boundaries. The production change is one explicit request flag, with targeted unit-test and replay-fixture coverage.

One data point for the "Not checked" note. We ran it on main d53873b6a4, not on this PR's code.

With real Codex CLI 0.164.0 on Linux, we forked a 3-turn thread at turn 2 twice through thread/fork with lastTurnId:

  • Without excludeTurns: the response carried 2 turns (2,739 bytes).
  • With excludeTurns: true: thread.turns was [] (1,489 bytes), with the same id, timestamps and forkedFromId. That response decoded with V2ThreadForkResponse.

On the flagged fork, thread/turns/list returned turns 1 and 2 and not turn 3. A new turn in the fork recalled content from turns 1 and 2.

Walkthrough

The Codex adapter and replay-fixture recorder now add excludeTurns: true to thread/fork requests. Tests and transcript fixtures verify the option for native-turn forks, paginated history, and sibling merges.

Explanation

The description covers the problem, change, scope and approval rationale, verification steps, test results, and known limitations. It also identifies the linked issue and explains why the focused fix does not require prior maintainer approval.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The whole-PR source change in CodexAdapterV2.ts adds only the excludeTurns: true parameter to the thread/fork request, with a comment tied to #24460. The test changes are the fork-frame expectation update and the new request-shape test, both in CodexAdapterV2.test.ts. The replay fixture edits in thread_fork_native_prior_turn and thread_merge_back_siblings change only the recorded thread/fork outbound frames to add excludeTurns: true, which matches the source change. The recorder script change adds the same parameter to its own thread/fork request. No unrelated behavior, refactor, or file change appears in the whole-PR diff. The PR description notes that readThreadSnapshot remains unchanged. That is a stated exclusion and not an out-of-scope change.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

[#24460] Objective 1, request shape: met. In CodexAdapterV2.ts, forkThread sends excludeTurns: true with thread/fork (whole-PR diff against the merge base, +4 lines). threadId, lastTurnId, and the runtime params are unchanged. The new test "forks at a native turn without asking Codex for the historical turns" checks the full outbound frame, including excludeTurns: true. The fork fallback test expectation was updated to match.

[#24460] Objective 2, pending-request completion: not met. The issue's expected behavior says an oversized response must not strand pending requests or block unrelated providers. The suggested direction asks for focused coverage of pending-request completion when the transport reader fails. The whole-PR test diff against the merge base contains only the fork-frame expectation update and the new request-shape test. No test forces a transport reader failure or checks that a pending thread/fork request completes with a failure. The PR description states that readThreadSnapshot was left as a separate problem and does not address the reader-failure path. The #19733 size guard is existing behavior and the issue states it does not remove full-history fork requests.

Resolution

Add focused automated coverage that forces a transport reader failure after a thread/fork request is sent. Verify that the pending fork request completes with the expected failure and does not remain pending. Keep the existing outbound-frame and excludeTurns assertions in place.

Keep the recorded response consistent with excludeTurns: true.

Codex 0.156.1 does not return populated thread.turns or the full-history deprecation notice for this request. This file is marked as a recorded Codex transcript, so its inbound response is stale even though this fixture is not currently loaded by a replay test. Update the response here and in the loaded merge-back fixture. The coverage impact applies only to the merge-back replay.

A fork of a very large Codex conversation returned the whole turn history and exceeded the transport limit, though the adapter only needs thread metadata. The fork request now sets excludeTurns, and the recorded fork frames in the replay fixtures were updated to match.

Keep the replay recorder aligned with the adapter request.

When the recorder regenerates a thread/fork frame, it omits excludeTurns. normalizeReplayFrame and normalizeThreadRequest preserve this top-level parameter, and the replay matcher uses strict equality. The regenerated fixture therefore fails when the adapter sends excludeTurns: true.

Use an empty thread/fork response in the sibling-merge fixture.

The changed requests include excludeTurns: true, but both recorded thread/fork responses still contain the source turn. The sibling-merge test therefore does not cover the empty thread.turns response for this option. Update both responses at lines 35 and 59 to "turns":[]. This is a test-coverage gap, not an established production failure.

Apply the replacement to both thread/fork responses.

The adapter now sends excludeTurns on thread/fork, and the fixtures were updated to match. The recorder still built the request without it, so a re-recorded fixture would not match the adapter's frame. It now sends excludeTurns like its thread/resume requests do.

[Bug]: Codex fork requests full history, exceeding transport limits on large threads
