fix(server): an agent can mark its own thread unread when its turn ends - #24157
A scheduled run calling t3_thread_organize with action: "mark_unread" on its own thread always failed with “has no completed run to mark unread” while that run was active. Reproduced with a real interval task after settling the thread on current main.
Change
Defer an own-agent request until its run completes, following the existing settle service pattern, and return marksUnreadWhenTurnEnds: true. Other callers retain the direct command behavior. The deferred command includes an optional run ID so the orchestrator atomically checks that the run is still the latest successful run and preserves visits at or after completion. Timed-out waits do not mark unread.
Retains the original implementation and authorship from renemifsud, with ordering fixes and focused regression coverage added during triage.
Triaged bug via the automated issue flow. This fixes the existing own-thread action; no new setting or persisted state. The command contract gains an optional run ID and the MCP success response gains the deferred-result variant. No client rendering or provider adapter changes.
Four focused suites (runtimeLayer.test.ts, ThreadManagementService.test.ts, AgentAwarenessRelay.test.ts, mcp/toolkits/core.test.ts): 124 passed.
The real MCP-handler regression fails before implementation with the reported OrchestratorMcpFailure, then passes after the fix. Original red output.
Coverage includes successful/failed/interrupted outcomes, preserving a newer visit, and a deferred command arriving after rollback. Rollback red output.
Server and contracts type checks pass. Formatting and lint pass for all eight changed files; lint reports one pre-existing unused-variable warning.
Two independent reviewers returned MERGE after correcting the rollback finding.
Runtime proof
Before
After
Linux server, isolated state, real 60-second interval scheduler and Codex provider, visited and settled thread
The after transcript records the own-agent call while active, unchanged read state before completion, and the persisted deferred event afterward: completedAt=11:13:01.568Z, lastVisitedAt=11:13:01.567Z. No external mark-unread call was used on the candidate. Sanitized transcripts, assertions and reproduction scripts. Proof matrix; visual capture matrix is empty for this server-only change.
Desktop shell and mobile clients were not run; this path is shared server behavior. A server restart drops the in-memory deferred request, matching the existing settle behavior. The 24-hour timeout was source-reviewed without a separate runtime fixture. The newer-run guard has a mutation-verified regression added at 08b1f88a8b: all 90 runtime-layer tests pass, and implementation files are identical to the runtime-verified commit.
An agent that calls t3_thread_organize with mark_unread on its own thread
mid-turn was refused, because marking unread rewinds the visit to just
before the latest run completed and the latest run is the caller's active
one. It now waits for that turn, the way settle does, marks the thread
unread if the turn completed, and returns marksUnreadWhenTurnEnds=true.

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a focused server-side fix that defers an existing mark-unread request until the owning agent’s run completes, while leaving other callers and existing lifecycle behavior unchanged. The added tests cover successful completion and non-completing runs, with no product-default, schema, security, or deployment changes.

The thread service supports immediate unread marking and deferral until an active run completes. The MCP thread tool calls the service and reports when marking unread will take effect. Run-scoped checks preserve the visit watermark when the referenced run or visit state does not meet the required conditions.
The command accepts an optional runId. When it is present, the orchestrator updates lastVisitedAt only if that run is the latest completed run and the current visit does not follow its completion.

The service defers an own-agent unread request while a run is active. It dispatches the command only when the run completes. Tests cover completed, failed, and interrupted runs; fixtures implement the new service methods.
The mark_unread handler calls markThreadUnread. The tool description and success shape include the deferred result. Runtime tests cover the MCP call and visit-watermark conditions.

Deferred unread marking appears to work, and the earlier premature-marking concern is resolved. Strengthening the MCP response assertion is a bounded follow-up; the change is mergeable with owner awareness.

Explanation
Issue #24136 requires an agent to mark its own thread unread during an active run or when that run completes. The PR defers the own-agent request, returns marksUnreadWhenTurnEnds: true, and dispatches thread.mark-unread only after a completed run. The optional runId guard preserves newer runs and visits made at or after completion. Tests cover successful, failed, interrupted, rolled-back, superseded, and timed-out paths. The supplied verification reports 124 passing tests and a passing real MCP-handler regression.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changes stay within issue #24136. They update the server thread-management service, MCP handler and contract, orchestrator command handling, and focused regression tests. The shared wait-constant update supports deferred thread actions. No client rendering, provider adapter, scheduling behavior, new setting, or persisted state changes are included. The issue's documentation suggestion is not a required coding objective.

Do not mark unread when the wait times out.
waitForThread can return a completed run with timedOut: true while a restart continuation is still pending. This status-only check then dispatches thread.mark-unread before the turn finishes. Check timedOut as well as run.status before dispatching.

…ead unread mid-run
A scheduled run calling t3_thread_organize mark_unread on its own thread is
rejected with 'has no completed run to mark unread' because the active run
is the latest run, even though an earlier run completed.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…r visit
The own-agent deferred mark now sends thread.mark-unread with the run it
waited for. The orchestrator applies it only while that run is the latest
completed run and the thread was not visited after it completed, so the
check and the write share one command boundary. A wait that times out
before a restart continuation settles no longer marks at all.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Rollback rewrites the same run as rolled_back with a later completedAt,
so the guard matched it and rewound a visit made after the original
completion. Require the run to still be completed.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Updated in 08b1f88a8b, preserving the original commits. The deferred wait now checks timedOut; the serialized command guards the completed run identity and preserves newer visits. Regression coverage also protects rollback and a newer completed run. Both independent final reviews returned MERGE; the real scheduled-run proof and final proof audit are linked in the description.

Assert the deferred success payload.
The deferred mark currently works, and the later lastVisitedAt assertion covers its effect. This test still misses the MCP response contract. Its current conditional parse can also let a non-text error pass.
Reject any error result, then assert the serialized payload in result.structuredContent.
Suggested fix
- const text = result.content[0];- assert.deepEqual(- result.isError === true && text?.type === "text" ? JSON.parse(text.text) : undefined,- undefined,+ assert.notStrictEqual(+ result.isError,+ true,
"mark_unread from the thread's own active run must not be rejected",
);
+ assert.deepEqual(result.structuredContent, {+ marksUnreadWhenTurnEnds: true,+ });
