Refs #23731. This fixes the reproduced slow-link loop; the reporter's original disconnect cause remains unconfirmed.

On a slow link, a phone never finishes connecting to a server with a big config. The client drops the socket after 15 s without a message, and a WebSocket message only reaches the app once all of it has arrived. A config snapshot of a few MB takes longer than that, so the client gives up on a healthy server, reconnects and downloads the same snapshot again, forever.

Scope and approval

This changes the RPC WebSocket wire protocol through negotiated frame parts and shared client reassembly. It requires an approving GitHub review from Theo or Julius before merge. Macroscope approval does not satisfy that requirement.

Fix

  • The client adds frameParts=1 to its socket URL.
  • When asked, the server sends any message over 48 KiB in parts of at most 48 KiB (packages/shared/src/socketFrameParts.ts).
  • The client joins the parts back together, and each part counts as the server being alive.
  • Old clients don't ask, so they still get whole messages. Old servers ignore the parameter.

A stalled connection still times out. A link that cannot deliver a part within the liveness timeout can still disconnect.

The snapshot is this big partly because of the per-folder skill copies in #21181, which this PR doesn't touch.

Evidence

POCO F4, Android 14, dev build on corex, 2026-10-22. The dev server pads the snapshot to 4 MB (about 390 KB on the wire) and the phone reaches it through a proxy capped at 12 KB/s, so the snapshot takes about 33 s.

Before (main): each socket dies after about 177 KB with "stopped responding for 15s", and the app retries forever.

before

After: one socket receives the whole snapshot and the environment stays Connected.

The recordings were made before 6bb7079, which sizes parts by UTF-8 bytes, the merges from main, and 843f9bc, which reduces parts to 48 KiB. These older phone recordings are supporting evidence; the current-head Android run is below.

Testing

Current head 0d25731eae2ed0eafd5cc5f3f5e3cbcdf20396da rebases the fix onto main ccaa3ad2956b90484052198af7f0e40996e403ca. All six local patches are unchanged according to git range-diff. The integration preserves main's probe and config-replay changes and counts inbound parts before reassembly. A fresh independent Codex review found no issues.

On this exact head:

  • vp run check:changed "$FLEET_SOURCE_BASE" passed in Boat job j_seeues3kio664ys4civz, stage typecheck-check-changed, large Linux worker, attempt 1, exit 0. It checked format, lint, Knip, generated GraphQL operations, types for 36 affected packages, and 27 tests across four files. A default worker first passed the 75 focused framing, session, connection-supervisor and WebSocket tests, then ran out of memory during the changed-file typecheck. The larger worker completed it. Validation output is below.
  • POCO F4, Android 14, compatible native dev client fingerprint 8006860c656de3319b4b47d3bab69506af6a0809, Metro and real server on corex. A TCP proxy limits WebSocket downstream traffic to 4,000 bytes/s with compression disabled. The natural config arrives as a 49,152-byte part after 12.4 seconds and a 35,164-byte final part after 21.1 seconds. One RPC socket stays open through the 110-second capture interval, with 77 received messages. Creating a project and thread succeeds, and a real Codex GPT-6-Astra turn replies slow connection verified. No config padding or provider mocks were used. A socket transcript excerpt is below.

The recording is trimmed to the connection attempt and the completed conversation. The transcript covers the continuous socket between them.

Current-head iOS verification

iPhone 18 Pro simulator, iOS 27.0, on shiv, with JavaScript and the real backend from 0d25731eae2ed0eafd5cc5f3f5e3cbcdf20396da served by Metro on corex. The installed T3 Code Dev 2.2.0 build 1 matches native fingerprint 953468b560e21a2a7cfb6d86a69eda1e061efb8a. vp run mobile:install ios 6B5C2A98-5929-424B-99BC-A3BAE58C1819 exited 0 and verified the existing compatible binary; this was not a fresh native build.

A TCP proxy caps WebSocket downstream traffic at 4,000 bytes/s and disables compression. The natural config needs two messages: a 49,152-byte partial message at 12.5 seconds and a 35,164-byte final message at 21.3 seconds. The environment reaches Connected. The final RPC socket stays open for at least 155 seconds and receives 73 messages, including a real Codex GPT-6-Luna follow-up reply. No config padding or provider mocks were used. The project was added through the CLI; the thread and both turns were created through the native UI.

The recording is trimmed to the connection attempt and the follow-up conversation. It shows the environment switched on, Connected, and the reply reconnected iOS verified.

Current-head Electron, physical iPhone, real WAN/relay/tunnel connections and throttled compressed transfers remain unverified. Electron verification is blocked by shiv's locked macOS screen. The reporter's specific disconnect cause remains unconfirmed. The fresh Android run proves the reproduced slow-config loop, not every cause of the issue.

Previous published head 8d6497c71dd66c65558d84ee82f8252c98cc1d44 passed CI run 40277531616. The evidence below is attributed to that older build and is supporting evidence for the framing behavior.

Maria reports runtime verification at 8d6497c, on a Linux Boat VM using the real dev server, Chrome and real Codex gpt-6.1-sol turns. At 4,000 downstream bytes/s with compression disabled, main f17c9d202b38ea9a009a2d6dc3932e212bad4c24 opens three sockets in 55 seconds without receiving config. This PR receives a 49,152-byte part and a 26,129-byte final part, loads the app and keeps one socket through the 55-second capture. RPC replies, pongs, thread navigation and new-thread creation also work. An authenticated socket without frameParts receives one intact 98,830-byte JSON config. Her Blacksmith run of vp test run packages/shared/src/socketFrameParts.test.ts packages/client-runtime/src/rpc/session.test.ts passes all 17 tests. These are her reported results, not a rerun by this follow-up.

That run does not cover a complete mixed-version UI matrix. Its copied dev state also produces migration-history and unsupported-keybinding warnings because the comparison main is newer.

Implementation and supporting verification at 843f9bce5afe6ab8d29af439aecfb9146029136b:

  • CI run 40260716952 passed, including lint, build/typecheck, shared/client-runtime tests, server tests, web tests and release smoke.
  • socketFrameParts.test.ts checks that each part fits in 48 KiB, preserves surrogate pairs and reconstructs the original frame.
  • session.test.ts simulates a large config transfer at 4,000 bytes/s using the default part size and verifies that it connects. A separate test verifies that a transfer stalled after its first part still times out.
  • Maria reports verification at 843f9bc in real Chrome against the actual server at 4,000 bytes/s with compression disabled. The final client receives seven parts over about 82 seconds, loads the app and keeps one socket through a 105-second capture. The matching main-client case reconnects without receiving config. She also reports both mixed-version paths passing: new client/old server and old client/new server.
  • Maria also reports vp run check:changed passing on Blacksmith at this exact head, including 25 tests across three files. These additional results are attributed to her verification; this follow-up did not rerun them.
  • Those earlier runs did not verify native iOS, Electron, real WAN/relay/tunnel connections or throttled compressed transfers. The earlier Chrome verification at 843f9bc predates the latest merge from main; Maria's 8d6497c run above covers the previous published head. The existing 90-second connection setup budget still applies. The older phone recording above is supporting evidence, not a current-head native rerun.

Implemented with Claude Opus 5.5 in Claude Code, reviewed by GPT-6.1-Sol in Codex, running in T3 Code.

Integration and current-head verification by GPT-6.1-Sol in Codex, running in T3 Code.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at 0d25731

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — Large RPC messages are split and reassembled so slow transfers can maintain connection liveness. Negotiation preserves legacy-client behavior, without changing permissions, stored data or product settings.

Walkthrough

The shared package adds WebSocket frame splitting and joining. The client opts in with a query parameter, and the server splits outgoing frames when the parameter is present.

Changes: WebSocket frame-parts support

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shared frame-part protocol
packages/shared/src/socketFrameParts.ts, packages/shared/src/socketFrameParts.test.ts, packages/shared/package.json
Adds helpers to split oversized string frames and reassemble marked parts. The test checks that split multibyte text stays within the configured byte limit and round-trips through UTF-8. The shared package exports the helpers.
Client and server WebSocket integration
packages/client-runtime/src/rpc/session.ts, packages/client-runtime/src/rpc/session.test.ts, apps/server/src/ws.ts
The client adds frameParts=1 to the WebSocket URL and joins incoming parts. The server splits outgoing frames when the URL contains the parameter. Session tests cover a multipart initial snapshot and the updated URL.

packages/shared/src/socketFrameParts.ts:5-16
🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Lower the default part size for the slow-link contract.

At a sustained 4 KB/s rate, one 65,536-byte part takes about 16.4 seconds. A client using frameParts=1 can therefore hit its 15-second pingTimeout before joinSocketFrameParts emits the next synthetic liveness frame. This still violates the stated support for links down to a few KB/s.

Reduce SOCKET_FRAME_PART_BYTES below 60,000 bytes for a 4 KB/s floor. A 48 KiB limit provides margin while preserving the existing protocol.

Reviewed the 48 KiB suggestion against 2361e80d84b8e0da46499cc29e6c77192078b298. The arithmetic is correct: an uncompressed 64 KiB part takes about 16.4 seconds at 4,000 bytes/s and can exceed the 15-second heartbeat timeout. The reproduced device case is 12 KB/s; this PR does not guarantee 4 KB/s support. Keeping 64 KiB and declining the optional size change. The body now explicitly says a part taking longer than the timeout can still disconnect. A smaller fixed size would move that limit rather than remove it.

The independent review found no blocking runtime defect. I corrected the device-evidence wording: JSON parsing took 22 ms and total frame handling took 2.7 seconds. Those measurements do not establish continuous blocking or exclude processing problems on the reporter's S25. Refs #23731 remains because the reporter's cause is unconfirmed.

The 17 focused tests and CI passed at this exact head. A fresh read-only merge check against main 5b35402623d7d1d88eaa472807272a6c2e78012a is conflict-free; the newer change in ws.ts only passes a local-only flag to VCS status refresh and does not affect framing. The combined tree was not built, and no new device run was performed.

@juliusmarminge could you take a look? This changes how big messages travel over the socket: when a new client asks for it with frameParts=1, the server splits text frames over 64 KB into parts, and the client puts them back together. Old clients and old servers behave as before. Macroscope wants a maintainer to review the protocol change, and that's the main thing to check.

@shivamhwp, thanks for the opt-in framing and shared client reassembly. i kept your commits, merged current main, and reduced parts from 64 to 48 kib. the default-size regression now reproduces the remaining timeout at 4,000 bytes/s; a stalled partial transfer still disconnects. i also shortened the compatibility comment and added exact utf-8 reconstruction coverage.

verification at 843f9bce5afe6ab8d29af439aecfb9146029136b:

  • the regression fails on main and the original 64 kib implementation, then passes with 48 kib. blacksmith vp run check:changed passed format, lint, knip, graphql, 34 package typechecks, and 25 tests across three files. no new test files.
  • real chrome and the actual server, with a matching 256 kib settings fixture and a 4,000 bytes/s proxy: the main client's unframed path repeatedly reconnects without receiving config. the final client receives seven parts over about 82 seconds, loads the app, and keeps one socket through the 105-second capture. compression was disabled for this case.
  • both mixed-version wire paths passed: new client/old server accepts a whole 392,246-byte config; old client/new server accepts a whole 326,788-byte config and loads the app. ordinary replies and pongs continue.
  • all 24 executed ci checks pass; six conditional checks skip. macroscope approves this head. two independent code reviews found no blockers. coderabbit remains automatically paused and was not invoked.

known limits: sufficiently slow parts can still exceed 15 seconds, and the existing 90-second connection setup budget remains. native ios/android, electron, real wan/relay/tunnel connections, and throttled compressed transfers are unverified.

before: main client remains on still connecting with the matching slow-link fixture

after: the same fixture loads the real app on one socket

after: the final 25 seconds show connection completion and the loaded app

Verified in a real dev environment

verified unchanged head 8d6497c71dd66c65558d84ee82f8252c98cc1d44 on this linux boat vm. the pr is open and none of its commits are by julius or theo. no source changes or pushes were needed.

installed and ran github/main (f17c9d202b38ea9a009a2d6dc3932e212bad4c24) in a separate worktree, then stopped its captured process group before starting this exact pr head. both used the real dev server, repo Playwright and /usr/bin/google-chrome. created the project and threads through the web app and ran real codex gpt-6.1-sol turns through the local proxy. no mocked responses, generated skills, padded config or demo data.

at 4,000 downstream bytes/s with websocket compression disabled, main repeatedly reconnects before its natural 68,550-byte config arrives. the pr receives a 49,152-byte part and a 26,129-byte final part, loads the app and keeps one rpc socket through the 55-second capture. the screenshot includes a fresh thread whose real codex reply is slow link codex verified.. ordinary rpc replies, server pongs, thread navigation and new-thread creation also worked over this connection.

the main state was copied into the stopped pr environment to retain the app-created project and conversation. the pr has additional verification messages and a fresh thread. startup reported migration-history and unsupported-keybinding warnings because main is newer; the tested connection and provider flows still worked. a fresh pairing was needed because the session cookie name includes the server port.

also exercised the non-negotiated server path through an authenticated websocket ticket: omitting frameParts returned one intact 98,830-byte JSON config rather than prefixed parts.

main: the throttled connection remains on still connecting

pr: the throttled app displays the real codex reply

pr: the slow connection loads the real conversation on one socket

native ios/android, electron, macos/windows, actual wan/relay/tunnel connections, throttled compressed transfers, and the reporter's specific phone/disconnect cause. the non-negotiated wire check does not constitute a complete old-client/new-server or new-client/old-server ui matrix. other providers were not exercised. this verifies the reproduced slow-config connection loop, not every cause of https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/issues/23731.

…onnection in a loop

The client's ping reply waits behind whatever the server is already sending,
and a WebSocket message only arrives once all of it has. When the config
snapshot takes longer than the 15s ping timeout to download, the client
declares a healthy server dead, reconnects, and downloads the same snapshot
again, forever.

Clients now ask the server to send messages over 64 KiB in parts. Each part
that arrives counts as the server being alive, and the client joins the parts
back into the original message. Old clients and old servers keep sending and
receiving whole messages.
