…d app electron-updater's AppImage install unlinked the running AppImage, then moved the new one in with a PATH-resolved `mv`. When `mv` failed (ENOTCONN from a dead AppImage mount on PATH), no AppImage was left to launch. Patch electron-updater 6.8.9 to stage the new AppImage beside the target (hard link, or copy across filesystems) and rename it over the old one, so there is no child process and a failure leaves the old file in place. …eUpdater subclass The atomic AppImage install now lives in our code as a typed override of doInstall, so electron-updater stays unpatched and bumps don't touch it. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Preserve the original AppImage when relaunch fails.
AtomicAppImageUpdater.doInstall removes appImage before void this.spawnLog(destination, [], env). spawnLog can reject when the detached child cannot start, but the rejection is discarded. The renamed destination remains available, so this does not leave the installation without a binary. It does violate the class comment that the old AppImage survives any failure. Defer removal until relaunch failure can be handled, or retain the old path for recovery.

Fixes #23188
Problem
On Linux, installing an AppImage update could delete the app. electron-updater 6.8.9 (6.8.11 has the same code) unlinks the running AppImage first, then moves the new file into place with
execFileSync("mv", …), which findsmvthrough PATH. If thatmvfails, the old file is already gone and nothing is left to launch. In #23188 it failed withspawnSync mv ENOTCONN: a dead.mount_T3-Cod*dir from an earlier launch was on PATH. The retry then hitENOENTon the unlink, and the next launch exited 127.Change
On AppImage builds,
ElectronUpdaternow usesAtomicAppImageUpdater, a subclass of electron-updater'sAppImageUpdaterthat overridesdoInstall. It puts the new AppImage beside the destination (a hard link, or a copy when the download is on another filesystem) andrenameSyncs it over the old file. No child process runs, so PATH doesn't matter, and the rename is atomic: if any step fails, the running AppImage stays in place and the staged file is removed. The download is deleted only after the swap succeeds, asmvdid before. The rest matches upstream: versioned file names follow the download (electron-builder#2964), and the relaunch is unchanged. Other platforms and the deb/rpm/pacman updaters keep using electron-updater'sautoUpdater.The same fix is proposed upstream in electron-userland/electron-builder#10386. Once it ships, the subclass can be deleted and
electron-updaterbumped.Scope and approval
The issue isn't triaged yet. I think this fits the small, focused fix exception: an update that fails partway should never delete the installed app, and the change is limited to that one install step, with no change to update policy or UI. It doesn't touch the separate stale-mount PATH cleanup (#18808, reverted in #22222). That fixed the trigger. This fixes the data loss whatever the trigger.
Verification
vp test run apps/desktop/src/electron/ElectronUpdater.test.ts: 2/2 pass. The tests run the realdoInstallon a real temp dir, with PATH pointing at an empty dir.AppImageUpdaterfail on the bug itself:{ error: "Error: spawnSync mv ENOENT", appImage: null }, so the old AppImage is gone.vp packinapps/desktopsucceeds and bundles the subclass intodist-electron/main.cjs.vp run check:changed: format, lint, knip, typecheck and tests all pass.Built and verified with Claude Opus 5.5 in Claude Code (T3 Code).
