Dev machines now set virtualStoreType: global from .pnpmfile.cjs, so a worktree's node_modules is ~2.7k links into <storeDir>/links. CI, Windows, and T3CODE_PNPM_GLOBAL_VIRTUAL_STORE=0 keep the per-project store. - readPackage gives React libraries an optional @types/react peer, and two react-navigation edges are declared, because TypeScript cannot reach pnpm's hoisted copies from the store. - prepare skips effect-tsgo patch when TypeScript is shared from the store. - ensure:electron builds the runtime in a stage dir and publishes it with one rename, so concurrent worktrees cannot corrupt the shared copy. - Metro watches the store slots this app reaches and falls back to the hoisted dir, like NODE_PATH does for Node. - The setup cross-device warning compares the store with the virtual store. ApprovabilityVerdict: Needs Human Approval Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This PR introduces opt-in global pnpm storage plus cross-worktree Metro and Electron synchronization changes, while its lockfile re-resolution changes Expo native fingerprint and OTA compatibility. New static-analysis suppressions and an unresolved manifest-compatibility concern add further review risk. You can add or adjust custom eligibility rules. Learn more. |

# pnpm 12.14.0
This release adds the `sideEffectsCache.exclude` setting, stops `pnpm install` from waiting on the daily update check, and keeps pnpm from aborting with a core dump when the reader of its output exits.
## Minor Changes#
* Added the `sideEffectsCache.exclude` setting for packages whose build depends on something pnpm cannot include in the cache key, such as the system libraries a native addon links against. pnpm builds the listed packages in every project and never restores or saves their builds through the side-effects cache, locally or on a `remoteCache` server. Under the global virtual store, each project gets its own copy of these packages and of the packages that depend on them. Entries use the same `name`, `@scope/*`, and `name@version` patterns as `minimumReleaseAgeExclude` #5271.
* `pnpm login` now prints the `npm-notice` response header during web-based login. Registries use it to show the verification code that completes the sign-in in the browser.
## Patch Changes#
### Installing packages#
* `pnpm install` and `pnpm add` no longer wait for the daily update check. If the command finishes first, pnpm skips the update notice and checks again next time. On a registry that accepted the connection but never answered, an install that had nothing to do used to take minutes #16839.
* `pnpm install`, `pnpm add` and `pnpm update` now reuse `pnpm-lock.yaml` when the workspace configures a catalog entry that no dependency references, such as an unused entry or one whose package an `overrides` entry replaces. Before, every resolution in such a workspace resolved all dependencies again from the registry #16923.
* `pnpm install` now looks up a git dependency's branch or tag once per install, even when many workspace projects depend on it. With `linkWorkspacePackages` enabled, it used to run `git ls-remote` once per project #16899.
* A filtered install, such as `pnpm install --filter <pkg>`, now keeps the `pnpm-lock.yaml` entries of workspace projects that are missing from disk, as in a sparse checkout. Their importers, packages, and catalog entries stay even when the filter matches every project on disk #16931.
* pnpm now decides whether a dependency that a package also declares as an optional peer is linked as a dependency or as a peer from the shallowest path that reaches the package. When an existing lockfile records such a dependency as a regular dependency and a newly added dependency now provides the peer, pnpm records it as a peer, as a fresh install does. The lockfile entry of such a package can change on the next install #16901.
* An install that adds nothing to the store no longer changes the modification time of the store directory. CI caches that check modification times, such as GitLab's, no longer re-upload an unchanged store #16929.
### Running commands and scripts#
* pnpm no longer aborts with a core dump when the reader of its output has exited, as in `pnpm list | head -1` or `pnpm start 2>&1 | head -1`.
* `pnpm run` now reports a failed script as a JSON record under `--reporter=ndjson`. It printed a plain `[ELIFECYCLE]` line to stderr.
* `pnpm run` no longer prints `[ELIFECYCLE] Command failed with exit code N.` to stderr when a script fails under `--reporter=silent`, `--silent`, or `--loglevel=silent`.
* `pnpm pipeline --dry-run` no longer writes a run report when no projects are selected. With `--json` it prints `{"tasks": []}` pnpm/tasks#126.

<excerpt>citeturn0search4 [wordlim: 200] Crawled: 3 months ago; All transitive dependencies must be resolved from a trusted source, such as the configured registry, local file paths, workspace links, or trusted GitHub repositories (node, bun, deno). ... Configure registries for scoped packages in `pnpm-workspace.yaml`. ... ### virtualStoreDir ... Sets the maximum allowed length of directory names inside the virtual store directory (`node_modules/.pnpm`).
### symlink
* Default: true
* Type: Boolean
When `symlink` is set to `false`, pnpm creates a virtual store directory without any symlinks. It is a useful setting together with `nodeLinker=pnp`.
### enableModulesDir
* Default: true
* Type: Boolean
When `false`, pnpm will not write any files to the modules directory (`node_modules`). This is useful for when the modules directory is mounted with filesystem in userspace (FUSE). There is an experimental CLI that allows you to mount a modules directory with FUSE: @pnpm/mount-modules.
### virtualStoreDir
* Default: node_modules/.pnpm
* Types: path
The directory with links to the store. All direct and indirect dependencies of the project are linked into this directory.
This is a useful setting that can solve issues with long paths on Windows. If you have some dependencies with very long paths, you can select a virtual store in the root of your drive (for instance `C:\my-project-store`).

<excerpt>citeturn1search0 [wordlim: 200] Published: 4 months ago; Crawled: last week; https://github.com/rubnogueira/pnpm-repro-sharedlockfile ... During a workspace install with enableGlobalVirtualStore, each project's node_modules/.modules.yaml is written twice, with conflicting virtualStoreDir values:
`pnpm-workspace.yaml` (root):
packages:
- libs/*
enableGlobalVirtualStore: true
sharedWorkspaceLockfile: false
libs/common/pnpm-workspace.yaml (makes the package its own workspace root, with its own lockfile):
enableGlobalVirtualStore: true
Steps:
rm -rf node_modules libs/common/node_modules pnpm-lock.yaml libs/common/pnpm-lock.yaml
pnpm install # at root — OK
cd libs/common && pnpm install # prompts to remove & recreate node_modules
### Describe the Bug
Installation / global virtual store (`enableGlobalVirtualStore`), post-install build step.
When `enableGlobalVirtualStore: true` is set, running `pnpm install` at the workspace root succeeds, but a subsequent `pnpm install` inside a workspace package prompts:
> ? The modules directory at ".../libs/common/node_modules" will be removed and
> reinstalled from scratch. Proceed? (Y/n)
(In a non-TTY/CI shell the same condition surfaces as `ERR_PNPM_ABORTED_REMOVE_MODULES_DIR_NO_TTY`.) The prompt comes back every time you install in that package, even though nothing changed.
### Expected Behavior
The second pnpm install is a no-op ("Already up to date") — node_modules is already valid and should not be purged.
#### Actual behavior
pnpm reports a virtual-store mismatch and wants to recreate node_modules:
[ERR_PNPM_UNEXPECTED_VIRTUAL_STORE] Unexpected virtual store location
The dependencies at ".../libs/common/node_modules" are currently symlinked from the virtual store directory at ".../libs/common/node_modules/.pnpm". pnpm now wants to use the virtual store at ".../store/v11/links" ...
#### Root cause
During a workspace install with enableGlobalVirtualStore, each project's node_modules/.modules.yaml is written twice, with conflicting virtualStoreDir values:
1. The install/link step writes the correct GVS value virtualStoreDir = /links — extendInstallOptions (installing/deps-installer/src/install/extendInstallOptions.ts) sets virtualStoreDir to /links when GVS is enabled.
2. The post-install build pass — buildProjects (building/after-install/src/index.ts), run as the per-project rebuild during a workspace install — calls getContext() and rewrites .modules.yaml. Its options come from extendBuildOptions (building/after-install/src/extendBuildOptions.ts), which — unlike extendInstallOptions — never sets virtualStoreDir for GVS. So getContext falls back to the per-project default node_modules/.pnpm and the rewrite overwrites the correct value the install step recorded.
The next install in that project recomputes /links, compares it to the recorded node_modules/.pnpm, fails checkCompatibility with ERR_PNPM_UNEXPECTED_VIRTUAL_STORE, and — because a plain install runs with forceNewModules — prompts to purge node_modules.
The root workspace usually escapes this only because the optimistic "Already up to date" check short-circuits before validation (and a depless root manifest passes the deps-status check), so the mismatch surfaces in packages that actually have dependencies.

Since v12.4.1, the legacy implementation prefers the versions the source workspace lockfile pins, wherever they still satisfy the deployed project's ranges.

* The virtual store is placed at `virtualStoreDir`, resolved against the deploy directory. With the global virtual store enabled or an absolute `virtualStoreDir`, it stays at `node_modules/.pnpm`.
* The `prepare` script of the deployed project is not run.
## Files included in the deployed project
By default, all the files of the project are copied during deployment but this can be modified in one of the following ways which are resolved in order:
1. The project's `package.json` may contain a "files" field to list the files and directories that should be copied.
2. If there is an `.npmignore` file in the application directory then any files listed here are ignored.
3. If there is a `.gitignore` file in the application directory then any files listed here are ignored.

### symlink
* Default: true
* Type: Boolean
When `symlink` is set to `false`, pnpm creates a virtual store directory without any symlinks. It is a useful setting together with `nodeLinker=pnp`.
### enableModulesDir
* Default: true
* Type: Boolean
When `false`, pnpm will not write any files to the modules directory (`node_modules`). This is useful for when the modules directory is mounted with filesystem in userspace (FUSE). There is an experimental CLI that allows you to mount a modules directory with FUSE: @pnpm/mount-modules.
### confirmModulesPurge
* Default: true
* Type: Boolean
Controls whether pnpm asks for confirmation before removing the contents of an incompatible modules directory and reinstalling it from scratch. When `false`, pnpm recreates the modules directory without prompting. In CI, confirmation is disabled automatically.
### virtualStoreDir
* Default: node_modules/.pnpm
* Types: path
The directory with links to the store. All direct and indirect dependencies of the project are linked into this directory.

### Describe the Bug
Installing commands run from the symlinked side silently rewrite the other checkout's direct-dependency symlinks (root importer and every workspace member) with targets routed through the symlinked workspace's path, and rewrite its `.modules.yaml` (`virtualStoreDir` then points through the other workspace). The links still resolve — realpaths are identical — so nothing looks broken, but tools that key modules by path string (jest) then load packages twice (e.g. `@nestjs/core`), which breaks NestJS DI with `Nest can't resolve dependencies ... Reflector` in every checkout on the machine. The rewritten `.modules.yaml` also breaks the primary's own subsequent installs (virtual-store location mismatch → purge prompt).

<excerpt>citeturn0search2 [wordlim: 200] Published: 4 months ago; Crawled: last week; https://github.com/rubnogueira/pnpm-repro-sharedlockfile ... The dependencies at ".../libs/common/node_modules" are currently symlinked from the virtual store directory at ".../libs/common/node_modules/.pnpm". pnpm now wants to use the virtual store at ".../store/v11/links" ... ... During a workspace install with enableGlobalVirtualStore, each project's node_modules/.modules.yaml is written twice, with conflicting virtualStoreDir values:

Handle a manifest without virtualStoreDir.
Fresh pnpm 12 installs write this field as a string. However, pnpm's compatibility reader defaults a missing field to node_modules/.pnpm. This config reads the raw manifest, so path.resolve can receive undefined and throw a TypeError. Use the same fallback as scripts/setup-worktree.ts.
A missing .modules.yaml is a separate case. The proposed fallback does not cover readFileSync, and starting Metro before dependencies are installed is not a supported workflow.

modulesState.virtualStoreDir is not a string, matching the compatibility

Note 🤖 Claude Opus 5.5 responding on behalf of Theo Closing without a replacement. pnpm 12 took most of the win, and the global store adds risk that the rest does not pay for. Worktree setup installs since pnpm 12 (#22738), from T3 terminal logs:
Setup runs async, so the gap left (about 25 s on a Mac) is mostly background time. The cost is still real: a |
Every new worktree gets its own copy of ~266k dependency files, so a delete has to walk all of them. With pnpm's global virtual store, a worktree's
node_modulesis ~2.7k links into one shared copy. Setup drops to about a second, and a delete is instant.The global store is opt-in: set
T3CODE_PNPM_GLOBAL_VIRTUAL_STORE=1and runvp i. Without it, installs keep the normal per-project store. CI and Windows never use the global store.It is opt-in because some packages ship types that import packages they never declare. Those types resolve only through pnpm's hoisted copies, which TypeScript cannot reach from the shared store. This PR fixes every case that breaks typecheck today. A future dependency bump could add a new one, and it would show up only on machines that opted in.
What changed

With the env var unset, installs use

The lockfile had to be re-resolved, and pnpm 12 also re-resolves some unrelated optional peers (no version changes). That renames peer-suffixed
.pnpmdirs, which changes the production Expo fingerprint (📱 Native Change), and that fingerprint is theruntimeVersion. So OTAs stop reaching current store binaries until a new native build ships. A no-op re-resolve of main changes the fingerprint the same way, so the next dependency bump would trigger it anyway.
