Problem

Voice input on iPhone always transcribes in the device language. My phone is set to English and I dictate in Portuguese, so every recording comes back as English-sounding gibberish.

getLocalVoiceTranscriber in apps/mobile/src/native/voiceTranscription.ios.ts prepares Apple's SpeechTranscriber with the locale from Intl.DateTimeFormat().resolvedOptions().locale, and there's no way to change it.

Change

Adds a Dictation language setting under Settings > Microphone. It defaults to Device language.

  • The picker lists the languages from SpeechTranscriber.supportedLocales, each one named in its own language like iOS Settings does. To read that list, the existing @react-native-ai/apple patch gets a supportedLanguages() method (spec, .mm and Swift). The list follows whatever the installed iOS supports.
  • New mobile preference voiceInputLocale: a BCP 47 tag, or null for the device language. It uses the same null-means-cleared convention as terminalFontSize, so going back to Device language survives later preference saves. Persistence only checks the tag's shape. If the device can't transcribe it, prepare still fails with the existing unsupported-locale error.
  • VoiceInputProvider reads the preference when a recording starts and passes it to getLocalVoiceTranscriber, so composers don't re-render when it changes.
  • A short note in docs/user/composer.md pointing to the setting.

Scope and approval

This is a focused configuration option, per CONTRIBUTING. Voice input and its on-device Apple transcriber already exist. This only lets you pick the locale the transcriber is prepared with, instead of always using the device's.

Verification

The iOS Simulator reports SpeechTranscriber.isAvailable as false and returns no supported locales (checked with a small probe app on the iOS 26.5 and 27.0 Simulators), so the mic button doesn't show up there. To check transcription quality, I ran the same Apple API (SpeechTranscriber + SpeechAnalyzer, the path the patched @react-native-ai/apple uses) on macOS 27 with four of my own Portuguese recordings, once as en-US (what my phone does today) and once as pt-BR. The reference is the Whisper Large v3 transcript of each recording, and WER is measured against it.

Settings screens on the iOS 26.5 Simulator with a dev client. The After and Picker shots come from an earlier revision of this branch that used a fixed language list, since the Simulator has no locales to fill the real one:

Before After Picker
Microphone settings before Microphone settings with Dictation language set to Português (Brasil) Dictation language picker

On the current revision the Simulator shows just Device language with the footer "This device has no dictation languages to choose from.":

Dictation language picker on the Simulator, empty state

I also picked Português (Brasil) and cold-restarted the app, and the row still showed it. Then I switched back to Device language, changed the theme twice and cold-restarted again, and it stayed on Device language. That second sequence covers a bug from an earlier revision where clearing the value didn't stick.

Tests:

  • voiceTranscription.ios.test.ts: with the device locale mocked to en-US, getLocalVoiceTranscriber("pt-BR") prepares pt-BR, and the language list comes back sorted by name.
  • dictationLanguages.test.ts: the Microphone row shows the chosen language's name, the raw tag while the list loads, and Device language for null.
  • preferences.test.ts: saving pt-BR, clearing back to the device language, then an unrelated save keeps the value null. Sanitizing keeps null and well-formed tags and drops malformed ones.
cd apps/mobile
vp test run --project unit src/state/preferences.test.ts src/lib/dictationLanguages.test.ts src/native/voiceTranscription.ios.test.ts
vp run typecheck

expo prebuild --clean --platform ios and an xcodebuild of the T3CodeDev scheme for the Simulator both succeed with the patched Swift and .mm.

Dictation always used the device locale, so someone whose iPhone is in
English but who speaks Portuguese got garbage. Add an optional
voiceInputLocale preference, limited to a table of SpeechTranscriber
locales, and read it when a recording starts. Absent keeps today's
device-language behavior.
Settings > Microphone gets a Language section whose row opens a picker:
Device language first, then the supported languages.
Picking Device language wrote voiceInputLocale: undefined, which JSON
drops. The preferences atom merges the initial load under confirmed
saves, so the next unrelated save brought the old locale back. Store
null for the device language, matching terminalFontSize and
codeFontSize.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This PR adds a new dictation-language picker and wires persisted locale choices through the mobile settings and iOS transcription path. The existing device-language default is preserved, but the cross-cutting production behavior and new user-facing capability merit human review.

Walkthrough

The mobile app adds dictation-language discovery and selection. It stores the selected locale or a device-default choice, then uses the saved preference when creating a local voice transcriber.

Changes: Mobile dictation language

Layer / File(s) Summary
Native language discovery and transcription preparation
apps/mobile/src/native/voiceTranscription.types.ts, apps/mobile/src/native/voiceTranscription.ios.ts, apps/mobile/src/native/voiceTranscription.ts, patches/@react-native-ai__apple@0.12.0.patch, apps/mobile/src/native/voiceTranscription.ios.test.ts
The native API accepts an optional preferred locale and exposes supported dictation languages. The iOS implementation sorts supported languages by label. The Apple patch adds language discovery, returns the resolved locale from preparation, and updates transcription result collection and temporary-file cleanup. Tests cover locale selection and language-list results.
Locale preference and voice input wiring
apps/mobile/src/persistence/mobile-preferences.ts, apps/mobile/src/state/preferences.test.ts, apps/mobile/src/features/voice-input/VoiceInputProvider.tsx
Preferences retain voiceInputLocale when it is null or matches the specified locale-tag shape. Tests cover loading and persistence. Voice input passes the saved locale to local transcriber creation when preferences are available.
Settings selection and language labels
apps/mobile/src/lib/dictationLanguages.ts, apps/mobile/src/lib/dictationLanguages.test.ts, apps/mobile/src/features/settings/SettingsDictationLanguageRouteScreen.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/settings/SettingsMicrophoneRouteScreen.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/settings/components/settings-page-targets.ts, apps/mobile/src/Stack.tsx, docs/user/composer.md
The settings route lists available languages and the device-default option, then saves the selected locale. The microphone settings screen displays the current language label. The root navigator registers the route, and the documentation describes how to change the dictation language.

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to 546c0

No confirmed user-facing or operational issue remains that should block merging.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to 7b354

The change is bounded to choosing a language for existing on-device dictation. Language support checks and recording cleanup remain in place. No material security regression was substantiated in the inspected flow, but native-device behavior and some affected-scope coverage remain unverified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated new control is limited to selecting the native transcription locale for recordings on the current mobile installation. The inspected flow does not demonstrate new cross-tenant or server authority.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The identified UI writer offers only the device-default value and native-discovered IDs, and disables selection until preferences are ready. Runtime patches are not sanitized by the generic writer, so load-time tag validation is not a universal write-time boundary; native support checks remain the downstream control.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The existing controller owns recording and session cleanup independently of transcription success. Preparation failure, cancellation, interruption, and disposal paths release session resources; recording cleanup stops capture and deletes owned recordings. The locale change does not replace this lifecycle.

Cover the saved-locale handoff through VoiceInputProvider.

The added test passes "pt-BR" directly to getLocalVoiceTranscriber, so it does not exercise the provider callback. The session fixtures replace getTranscriber with their own stub. A regression that stops forwarding voiceInputLocale would therefore pass these tests while recordings use the device locale. Add a provider/session test that sets the saved locale and starts recording through VoiceInputProvider, then asserts that preparation receives "pt-BR".

@juliusmarminge this one is ready for review when you have time. It adds one setting (Settings > Microphone > Dictation language) that picks the locale for the existing Apple transcriber, so Portuguese dictation is transcribed as Portuguese instead of English.

This matters a lot to me. My iPhone is set to English, but I mainly use messaging apps in Polish because I communicate with Polish people. For voice input, I'd like to choose Polish independently of my phone's interface language. Following the device's preferred languages is a useful default, but I'd still need a manual override.
