Re-lands #21273, which was merged and then reverted in #22222 with the other desktop fixes from the takeover batch. The revert comment asked for a fresh PR from the original commit, run on a real build with existing user state. This branch is git cherry-pick -x of 3698269 onto current main. It applied cleanly with no edits. The subsequent merge of main 05696c6 keeps production unchanged and retains only this PR's three deterministic signature-check regressions, rewritten to assert download outcomes instead of mock calls.

Problem

On Windows, electron-updater checks the downloaded installer with PowerShell Get-AuthenticodeSignature and kills the check after 20 seconds. A slow check fails the whole update, even when the signature is valid. #20345 reports endpoint security scanning the installer as one cause. The same command on the same file then passed in 4.2 seconds.

Change

Before each download, wrap the NSIS updater's verifyUpdateCodeSignature. The first check is upstream's, unchanged. If it rejects with killed === true (Node's timeout kill), run the same verifier once more with the same publisher names and installer path. During the retry, a forwarding logger watches for electron-updater's "Ignoring signature validation" warning. If its capability probe skipped validation, the retry fails closed. Invalid signatures, other errors and a second timeout still fail. A WeakSet keeps repeat downloads from stacking wrappers. macOS and Linux have no such verifier.

Scope and approval

Verification

After merging main 05696c6, the focused file has three tests. With the production fix reverted, two fail and one passes. With the fix restored, all three pass. Desktop tsc-rs --noEmit, targeted vp lint, and vp fmt --check pass. The guarded test command is:

./node_modules/.bin/vp test run apps/desktop/src/electron/ElectronUpdater.test.ts --maxWorkers=1 --no-file-parallelism --cache=false

The packaged-build evidence below was captured before this main merge. No new packaged build was run for the merge.

Real build with existing user state, Windows 11 x64 (Enterprise Evaluation VM, PowerShell 5.1):

  1. Built unsigned NSIS packages of main (67c0fc0) and this branch in the VM with the same node scripts/build-desktop-artifact.ts --platform win --target nsis --arch x64 --build-version 0.1.1 --mock-updates command, plus a 0.1.2 update package (--skip-build). Both builds ran from their packaged win-unpacked folders on one state directory.
  2. Launch 1 (main) did first-run setup, added a git project (demo-app), sent a thread message and turned Project grouping off. The turn fails with 401 by design: the Codex CLI was logged in with a placeholder key.
  3. The unsigned builds' app-update.yml has no publisherName, so electron-updater would skip the check. I added the test publisher to both builds' app-update.yml. I signed the 0.1.2 installer with a VM-local test certificate. Its root was trusted in the VM, and Windows fetches its issuing CA over the certificate's two AIA URLs from a local responder. The repo's scripts/mock-update-server.ts served the feed.
  4. Before each download, I cleared the cached issuing CA and armed the responder to stall the next two fetches. Windows waits about 17 seconds on the first URL before it tries the second, so the first Get-AuthenticodeSignature runs past 20 seconds and electron-updater kills it. A later fetch answers at once. No product code or electron-updater code was changed.

Main ran one check per download, killed at 20 s, and both downloads failed:

Main: one signature check, killed at 20 s, download failed

Main: Could not download update

The branch, under the same two stalls, retried once and the update downloaded:

Branch: check killed at 20 s, retry passes, update downloaded

Branch: Update downloaded

Branch: Update 0.1.2 downloaded, click to restart and install

Both builds opened with the project, the thread and Project grouping off from launch 1:

Main, launch 2

Branch, launch 3

Main, launch 1, Project grouping turned off

Branch, launch 3, Project grouping still off

Before the main merge and test purge, focused tests with main's ElectronUpdater.ts failed the 3 new tests. The branch passed all 8 tests.

ElectronUpdater.test.ts with main's production code

ElectronUpdater.test.ts on the branch

Also run on the branch: tsc-rs --noEmit in apps/desktop, vp fmt --check and vp lint on the two changed files.

Not checked:

  • A production-signed (Azure Trusted Signing) update, and a timeout caused by real endpoint security. The stall here comes from the certificate fetch.
  • Installing main or this branch with their NSIS installers (both ran from win-unpacked), and installing the downloaded update. I stopped at "downloaded"; this PR doesn't change the install step.
  • The skipped-validation path on Windows. Unit tests cover it.
  • arm64, macOS and Linux.
  • electron-updater versions after 6.8.9. The skip detection matches its warning text.

Prior PRs: #21273 (merged, then reverted in #22222 for missing real-build proof). This PR re-lands its production fix unchanged. #21621 and #21622 (AppImage updater) are open on the same file. Each merges cleanly with main, but not with this branch, so whichever lands second needs a rebase.

Production fix is the #21273 commit, unchanged. The original fix and tests were written with Claude Opus 5.5 and revised in the maintainer takeover. Main-merge test reduction and regression verification by GPT-6.1 Sol in T3 Code Nightly. Re-land, Windows packaged-build verification, PR description and images by Claude Opus 5.5 in T3 Code Nightly.

📝 Walkthrough

The updater now retries timed-out Windows NSIS signature checks during downloads. Tests cover successful retries, invalid signatures, other errors, repeated timeouts, and skipped validation.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to e097f

Timed-out Windows signature checks are now retried. A skipped first-call signature validation may still let an update through without verification, which is a narrow, hard-to-exploit edge case. Consider closing it before merge or confirming it is intended upstream behavior.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to e097f

The retry remains bounded and reuses the same verifier, publisher names, and installer path. No introduced signature bypass was established. Remaining uncertainty concerns the external verifier’s acceptance contract and cleanup when downloads are interrupted.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The affected authority is the existing Windows desktop update-verification path. The comparison introduces no new network entrypoint, publisher configuration, deployment resource, or privilege grant; it changes when that existing path may proceed after a verifier failure.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The mocked download contract rejects non-null verifier results and demonstrates rejection when a retry emits the expected skipped-validation warning despite returning null. This supports the local guard, but does not establish the external verifier’s complete acceptance or installer-execution contract.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Ordinary downloads are serialized, limiting overlap of the shared logger proxy. Interruption restores application state and releases admission, whereas logger restoration waits for the verifier promise to settle. Whether cancellation can therefore permit overlapping proxies—and misattribute skipped-validation warnings—remains dependent on unavailable runtime and upstream serialization guarantees; no production bypass was established.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Validate the skipped-verification and cancellation contracts against the resolved upstream implementation. A per-verification status or warning observer would reduce dependence on diagnostic text and process-wide logger ownership.

L33: # Signature Validation Bypass Leading to RCE In Electron-Updater
L34:
L35: 24 Feb 2020 - Posted by Lorenzo Stella
L36: > We’ve been made aware that the vulnerability discussed in this blog post has been independently discovered and disclosed to the public by a well-known 【3†security researcher†twitter.com】. Since the security issue is now public and it is over 90 days from our initial disclosure to the maintainer, we have decided to publish the details - even though the fix available in the latest version of Electron-Builder does not fully mitigate the security flaw.
L37: 【4†Electron-Builder†github.com】 advertises itself as a “complete solution to package and build a ready for distribution Electron app with auto update support out of the box”. For macOS and Windows, code signing and verification are also supported. At the time of writing, the package counts around 100k weekly downloads, and it is being used by ~36k projects with over 8k stargazers.
L38:
L39: 【5†Image: Electron-Builder repository】
L40: This software is commonly used to build platform-specific packages for ElectronJs-based applications and it is frequently employed for software updates as well. The auto-update feature is provided by its 【6†electron-updater†github.com】 submodule, internally using 【7†Squirrel.Mac†github.com】 for macOS, 【8†NSIS†en.wikipedia.org】 for Windows and 【9†AppImage†appimage.org】 for Linux.
L41: In particular, it features a 【10†dual code-signing†www.electron.build】 method for Windows (supporting SHA1 & SHA256 hashing algorithms).
L42: ### A Fail Open Design
L43:
L44: As part of a security engagement for one of our customers, we have reviewed the update mechanism performed by Electron Builder, and discovered an overall lack of secure coding practices. In particular, we identified a vulnerability that can be leveraged to bypass the signature verification check hence leading to remote command execution.
L45: The signature verification check performed by electron-builder is simply based on a string comparison between the installed binary’s `publisherName` and the certificate’s Common Name attribute of the update binary. During a software update, the application will request a file named `latest.yml` from the update server, which contains the definition of the new release - including the binary filename and hashes.
L46: To retrieve the update binary’s publisher, the module executes 【11†the following code†github.com】 leveraging the native 【12†Get-AuthenticodeSignature†docs.microsoft.com】 cmdlet from Microsoft.PowerShell.Security:
L47:
L48:     `    execFile("powershell.exe", ["-NoProfile", "-NonInteractive", "-InputFormat", "None", "-Command", `Get-AuthenticodeSignature '${tempUpdateFile}' | ConvertTo-Json -Compress`], {
L49:           timeout: 20 * 1000
L50:         }, (error, stdout, stderr) => {
L51:           try {
L52:             if (error != null || stderr) {
L53:               handleError(logger, error, stderr)
L54:               resolve(null)
L55:               return
L56:             }
L57:
L58:             const data = parseOut(stdout)

title  | Windows

{!./partials/_upgrading-from-v26.md!}

The top-level win key contains a set of options instructing electron-builder on how it should build Windows targets. These options are applicable to any Windows target.

## Common Questions

## How do you delegate code signing?

In v27, all Windows signing is configured through the single `win.sign` discriminated union (`type: "signtool" | "hsm" | "pkcs11" | "azure"`). To delegate signing to a custom function, set the `sign` field on that union — it works for the `signtool`, `hsm` and `pkcs11` types. See the Windows Code Signing guide and why sign.js is called 8 times.

    "win": {
      "sign": {
        "type": "signtool",
        "sign": "./customSign.js",
        "publisherName": "CN=My Company, O=My Company, C=US"
      }
    }

electron-builder cannot read the certificate your hook signs with, so set `publisherName` to that certificate's subject: it is written to `app-update.yml`, and electron-updater checks every downloaded update against it. It is never derived from a certificate for a hook, not even one in the config, so without it a build that writes `app-update.yml` (an `nsis`, `nsis-web` or `electronUpdaterAware` `appx` target with a publish configuration, including one inferred from a GitHub `repository`) fails. Set `win.verifyUpdateCodeSignature: false` instead only if your updates are not Authenticode-signed or you don't use electron-updater.

Copy the subject from a binary your hook has already signed (a previous release, or `win-unpacked` from an `electron-builder --win dir` build, which does not write `app-update.yml`) instead of typing it by hand. electron-builder cannot check it against the certificate the hook uses, and every component you list (`CN`, `O`, `C`, …) must match the certificate exactly — otherwise installed apps reject every later update:

  * Windows (PowerShell): `(Get-AuthenticodeSignature .\dist\win-unpacked\<App>.exe).SignerCertificate.Subject` prints it in the form to use as-is.
  * macOS / Linux: `osslsigncode verify -in <App>.exe` — the `Subject:` line under "Signer's certificate", printed as `/C=US/ST=California/O=My Company, Inc.            }
            autoUpdater.addAuthHeader(`Bearer ${token}`)
            autoUpdater.checkForUpdatesAndNotify()
        }
    }

The built-in default uses `windowsExecutableCodeSignatureVerifier`. The older property `verifyUpdateCodeSignature`, which differs only in name and return interface, is deprecated and kept only as a compatibility shim (shall be removed in electron-builder v28). The protected `_verifyUpdateCodeSignature` member is likewise deprecated in favour of `_verifyUpdateFileAuthenticodeSignature`.

## How do you create a Parallels Windows 10 Virtual Machine?

<excerpt>citeturn0search2 [wordlim: 200] Crawled: yesterday; electron-updater always verifies the sha512 checksum of a downloaded artifact against the update manifest (`latest.yml` / `latest-mac.yml` / `latest-linux.yml`). ... * Apps built with a public key fail closed: an unsigned or tampered manifest aborts the update check before any download starts. ... # Ed25519 private key(s), PEM (PKCS#8). ... `ELECTRON_BUILDER_UPDATE_SIGN_KEY_FILE` | join the paths with the OS path delimiter: `a.pem:b.pem` on Linux/macOS, `a.pem;b.pem` on Windows ... - keyId: 3f9c…e1 # hex SHA-256 of the signing key's public key (SPKI DER), as printed by create-update-key

## Verification behavior in electron-updater

When at least one public key is configured (embedded or set at runtime), verification is enforced on every update check, for every provider. The manifest is accepted when any trusted key validates any of its signatures (`signatures` entries tagged with that key's id are tried first, then the untagged legacy `signature`):

Manifest state  | Result
--- | ---
At least one signature validates against a trusted key | Update proceeds
No `signature` and no `signatures`  | Error `ERR_UPDATER_MANIFEST_NOT_SIGNED`
Signed, but tampered or signed only by keys the install does not trust | Error `ERR_UPDATER_MANIFEST_SIGNATURE_INVALID`

Both errors are emitted through the updater's regular `error` event and abort the update before any download begins.

:::warning[The hazard is turning it off, not turning it on] Verification is enforced by the installed app, and since signing is on by default there is nothing to roll out — your first build already embeds the public key and signs its manifests. Older installs without the key simply skip verification. What matters from then on is that every future manifest is signed: publishing an unsigned one makes every install that carries the key refuse the update. :::

The first signature check can still skip validation and pass the update.

The wrapper calls verify before installing the logger proxy. electron-updater 6.8.9 calls handleError and then resolves null when the capability probe fails. NSIS treats null as a successful signature check, so the first call can accept an unverified update.

🛡️ Proposed fix: check for skipped validation on both calls

- 118:
Update verifyWithRetry so the logger proxy and skipped-validation detection wrap
the initial verify call as well as the retry. Extract or reuse a helper around
verifyRejectingSkip that converts capability-probe skips into a non-success
result, while preserving retry behavior only for killed errors and restoring
updater.logger after each attempt.
