A terminal CLI title spinner can tick while Hyprland captures a window. The helper compares the full before/after title and silently drops all window metadata, so the saved SnapShot loses app identity, accessibility text, and native capture feedback even though it captured the same window.

Apply the same narrow leading-spinner normalization used by the KDE helper. Address, process, class, geometry, mapped state, and hidden state must still match exactly. Return the metadata associated with the captured image.

Scope and approval

This is a focused obvious-bug fix under the contribution guide’s exception: an animation frame in the title does not change which window was captured. Only the native Hyprland helper changes; no contract, setting, or new workflow is added. Web, mobile, providers, and remote transport do not need changes.

Verification

The regression test parses realistic Hyprland active-window/client replies and exercises the production metadata decision. Restoring the original equality gate fails the spinner case; the fix passes. Changed titles, geometry, processes, classes, visibility, and missing windows still discard metadata.

CARGO_TARGET_DIR=/home/saphid/.cache/t3-f001-hyprland-target cargo test --locked --offline -j2: all 12 crate tests pass, including existing Wayland FD transport tests. Parent independently reran the suite. cargo fmt --check passes.

There is no live Hyprland session on this host. Full desktop capture and spinner-race frequency were not measured; the new regression test exercises JSON decoding and metadata selection, not the complete compositor capture command.

Implemented by Claude Sonnet 5.5 through the Claude harness, coordinated and verified by GPT-6.1-Sol through Codex. Independently reviewed by Claude Sonnet 5.5: no blocking findings.

…r ticks

The post-capture gate compared the whole Window with derived equality, so a
terminal title spinner advancing during capture made the helper report
{"window":null}. Downstream then skipped AT-SPI context and native feedback
with no fallback. Normalize the same leading braille spinner the KDE helper
and the AT-SPI matcher accept, keep every other identity, geometry, and
state check exact, and report the metadata captured with the pixels.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at 96b04dd

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This narrowly scoped Hyprland capture fix preserves metadata when only a terminal's known braille spinner changes, while continuing to reject stale or changed window identity, geometry, and state. It adds focused regression tests without introducing new capabilities, schema changes, or deployment/configuration risk.

Walkthrough

The capture command retains captured-window metadata when the post-capture window has the same address and passes comparison checks. Title comparison normalizes recognized leading CLI spinners. Tests cover matching and changed window states.

Changes: Capture metadata validation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Window comparison and title normalization
native/hyprland-snap-shot/src/ipc.rs
Window::matches_after_capture compares identity, geometry, class, mapping, hidden state, and normalized titles. capture_title removes a recognized leading CLI spinner only when a non-empty label remains.
Metadata retention and validation tests
native/hyprland-snap-shot/src/main.rs
captured_metadata finds the post-capture window by address and retains metadata only when comparison succeeds. The capture command uses this helper. Tests cover spinner updates, whitespace-only titles, missing windows, and changed window state.

Change: Bug fix

Suggested reviewers: bil0000

Merge Risk: Minimal · previous review 96b04

The change keeps Hyprland SnapShot metadata when a CLI title spinner ticks. Address, geometry, process, class, and visibility checks still apply. No actionable merge risk remains.

Security architecture risk: Minimal · up to 95a5c

The change preserves exact window identity, process, geometry and visibility checks while allowing title animation. No material security risk was identified in the changed capture path.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The changed title comparison affects metadata retention for the captured window in the current Hyprland session. It does not select a different capture address or relax the process, class, geometry, mapped-state or hidden-state comparisons.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Window titles enter through decoded compositor replies. Their new normalization applies only to post-capture metadata matching. Session validation, pre- and post-capture lock checks, and exact PID/title matching for activation remain separate controls.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Capture and post-capture validation errors still return before successful metadata emission. Each invocation uses fresh window observations without persistent matching state. The observations and image capture remain separate operations, as before this PR.

unchanged for all other inputs, including titles differing only by surrounding
whitespace, so matches_after_capture cannot accept those as equivalent.

Verified that the current head 96b04ddcbe2c140e72564d223c880c1ffe04c294 already addresses the whitespace finding: capture_title no longer trims an ordinary title before matching. The same commit adds regressions for meaningful leading/trailing whitespace and a changed title under a recognized spinner. I preserved that external follow-up and made no duplicate source change.

Local Rust execution could not run because this environment has no cargo/Rust toolchain. The exact-head source and regression additions were checked directly; current CI/review remains the validation authority. No browser/device verification was run. Upstream permission is READ, so this PR remains unmerged; the parent agent owns readiness and watches.

Verified in a real dev environment

No changed runtime behavior could be verified on this Boat VM. Result: unverifiable, not a runtime pass.

Inspected the description, diff, discussion and reviews at exact head a37c4958b6fc15ebb4bd94b80e3512f357cbcce6. The PR is open, and its three PR commits have no authorship by juliusmarminge or t3dotgg. Created a separate github/main worktree at 32ecd71726 and ran vp i successfully there, then checked out the exact PR head and ran vp i successfully there too.

The environment probe found no Hyprland or hyprctl executable, no installed Hyprland package, no Wayland display socket, and no Hyprland IPC socket. DISPLAY=:0 is available, but this is not a native Hyprland session. The production helper requires that session before capture; the changed Rust code is reached by desktop SnapShot, not a browser screenshot or ordinary provider turn.

Inspected environment command transcript

Not verified

  • Original metadata-loss race on main and metadata retention on the PR when a real terminal title spinner advances during capture.
  • End-to-end desktop capture, attached app identity, AT-SPI text, native capture feedback, and sending the resulting capture through a real Codex gpt-6.1-sol turn.
  • Neighboring rejection behavior for changed titles, geometry, process, class, visibility, or closed windows.
  • Native mobile, macOS and Windows clients; the changed implementation is Hyprland-specific.

No dev server, provider turn, screenshots or recording was produced because none could exercise this missing compositor path. No source changes, commits, pushes, labels, or PR state changes were made. Existing CI reports 26 successful checks, but it does not establish runtime verification. No local tests or check:changed run was substituted for the requested real-app proof.

A native Hyprland desktop session with the real helper is required to finish the main/PR comparison and neighboring capture checks.

Verified in a real dev environment

result: unverifiable on this vm. no changed runtime behavior was exercised, and this is not a runtime pass.

this fresh verification inspected the description, diff, discussion, reviews, and all three pr commits at a37c4958b6fc15ebb4bd94b80e3512f357cbcce6. the pr is open; none of its pr commits is authored by juliusmarminge or t3dotgg. fetched current github/main, created /home/user/main at 5b357b3b894e8255ebd3049c8ef826b93c20c9e4, and completed vp i. then checked out the exact pr head in /home/user/t3code and completed vp i there.

the environment probe found xorg/openbox on DISPLAY=:0, with no Hyprland or hyprctl executable, no wayland display socket, no hyprland ipc socket, and no hyprland package candidate in the configured ubuntu 24.04 repositories. the production helper requires a native hyprland session plus its window-mapping and window-export v2 protocols. a browser session or ordinary codex turn cannot reach the changed capture gate here.

environment command transcript, captured and inspected this run

existing ci reports 26 successful checks, zero pending, zero failing. no source changes or pushes were made.

Not verified

  • reproduction of the original spinner metadata-loss race on main, and metadata retention on the pr through a real desktop snapshot.
  • app identity, at-spi context, native feedback, and sending the resulting snapshot through codex gpt-6.1-sol.
  • neighboring capture rejection for meaningful title, geometry, pid, class, visibility, or window-lifetime changes.
  • native ios/android, macos, and windows behavior.

no dev server, provider turn, screenshots, or recording was produced because the required native compositor path is unavailable. no mocks, fixtures, or unit-test substitute was used as runtime proof. completing verification requires a native hyprland desktop session, the bundled helper installed through settings → snapshots, and matching main/pr captures while a real terminal's title spinner advances.
