There is no repeatable way to measure the packaged desktop app with a realistic workload, so regressions in launch, long chats, streaming, or idle cost go unnoticed until someone feels them. This adds one.

Summary

node scripts/desktop-perf.ts [--app <T3 Code.app>] [--baseline <results.json>] [--deep]
build release app (build-desktop-artifact --target dir) # skipped with --app
  seed scratch HOME once
"Long chat": 50,000 turns (100,000 messages)
"Stream A/B/C": synthetic ACP agent, 200 markdown chunks/s
  per scene, against a budget:
launch · first open of long chat · idle minute · reopen · scroll
three chats streaming · background streaming · switching · operating
→ CPU per process, footprint per process, Chromium trace
(5 longest renderer main-thread tasks, input-to-paint, fps, paints)
  write results.json (+ before/after table with --baseline)
--deep: xctrace Time Profiler, sample, vmmap, footprint

It never reads or writes ~/.t3; every run launches against a copy of the seeded scratch HOME. vp run perf:desktop is the alias.

Evidence

A full run takes about 6.5 minutes (about 12 with --deep) on an Apple Silicon MacBook Pro running macOS 27.2. Abridged output of --baseline comparing main with the fixes in the companion PRs:

scene metric budget before after
firstOpenLongChat openMs 1000 5605 146
idle appCpuPct 0.5 7.27 2.78 ✗
idle memoryMB.total 711 476
backgroundStreaming framesPerSec 1 3 1
launch usableMs 2500 4492 4439 ✗

Not covered: xctrace Allocations --attach hangs on this Xcode beta and ignores INT and TERM, so the harness kills the recorder after 40 s. Memory figures come from footprint and vmmap. The harness is macOS-only.

Merge Danger

Door: two-way

A standalone script and one package.json alias. Nothing ships in the app.

Blast Radius: none

scripts/desktop-perf.ts (vp run perf:desktop) builds a release app, seeds a scratch HOME with a 100,000-message chat and three chats fed by a synthetic streaming agent, and measures launch, opening and scrolling the long chat, streaming, idle, switching and typing against budgets. --baseline prints a before/after table; --deep adds xctrace, sample, vmmap and footprint captures. It never touches ~/.t3.

A CDP request that receives no reply leaves send() pending indefinitely, so waitFor() never reaches its 30/60-second deadline and the scene’s cleanup and partial-results reporting are skipped. send() has no request timeout, and the socket has no close/error handling to reject pending requests; add both so a hung renderer or exited app fails the measurement promptly.

Using --baseline <out>/results.json overwrites the baseline before it is read, so the report compares the new run against itself and hides regressions. Read the baseline before writing results.json.

A concurrent desktop build can make this benchmark copy the other build’s .app and then recursively delete that build’s staging directory. The global find selects the newest t3code-desktop-mac-stage-* directory by mtime rather than the stage created by this build; obtain this build’s exact stage path instead.

When T3CODE_HOME is exported, the launched app uses that directory instead of the scratch .t3, so it can open or modify real app data while the harness seeds the scratch database. launch() overrides HOME but inherits T3CODE_HOME; set it to NodePath.join(home, ".t3") in the child environment.

Approvability

Verdict: Would Approve

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This PR adds only a developer-invoked macOS performance harness and package alias, with no shipped runtime behavior or product-default changes. Unresolved high-severity findings affect harness cleanup, baseline integrity, concurrent build isolation, and scratch-data safety and should be addressed before relying on its measurements.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to b4e8d

This adds an opt-in desktop benchmarking command and does not change the shipped app. If the app crashes during a run, the harness can hang or leave the app running. Reused warmed data can also be stale, and one input metric is overcounted. These are small fixes that improve benchmark reliability, and none of them blocks merging.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to b4e8d

The harness is opt-in and normally uses synthetic workloads in copied scratch homes, limiting exposure. However, failure paths can leave debug-enabled processes running, and a custom home path can be deleted without establishing that it belongs to the benchmark. These risks affect the local machine rather than a demonstrated production or cross-tenant boundary.

Retained concerns

  • Low · security · inferred: Debugger lifetime is not contained across all failure states. launch can throw after spawning the application without terminating it, and measureLaunch invokes quit only on success. These paths can strand a process with renderer and main-process debugging enabled and the caller environment inherited. Other phases have finally-based cleanup, but that does not protect these acquisition and measurement failures. Remote reachability and actual descendant survival are not established.
  • Low · reliability · observed: The scratch-home lifecycle assumes ownership of caller-selected storage. When the expected database is absent, an arbitrary --home path is recursively removed before initialization, without a benchmark ownership marker or containment check. A mistaken path can therefore destroy unrelated local data. The default temporary-directory location limits ordinary exposure, but cloned measurement homes do not protect the original custom path from this preparation step.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated scope is the invoking user's local application processes and filesystem permissions. Custom storage paths extend destructive preparation beyond generated scratch storage. No evidence establishes a remote, cross-tenant, privileged-service, or production-environment attack path.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The supported security concern is an extended debugging lifetime after failure, not verified external exploitation. The harness enables process-level evaluation authority and has paths that omit shutdown; whether another principal can reach a surviving listener is unresolved.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The newly seeded workload enables only the synthetic local provider and disables named built-in providers, reducing accidental real-model execution. Debug discovery uses 127.0.0.1, but that client address does not itself establish the listeners' bind addresses or authenticate endpoint ownership.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Several acquired application sessions use finally-based shutdown, quit escalates from SIGTERM to SIGKILL after fifteen seconds, and xctrace recorders have a forty-second kill deadline. These are useful containment controls, but application acquisition failures and launch-measurement exceptions are outside their protection.

Pending CDP requests never settle when the socket closes.

Cdp.send resolves only when a reply with a matching id arrives. Nothing listens for close or error after the socket connects. If the renderer or the app crashes mid-scene, every in-flight send stays pending forever.

waitFor calls eval inside its loop. The loop re-checks the timeout only after eval returns, so its timeout cannot fire either. The harness hangs with no error and does not write results-partial.json.

Reject all pending requests on socket close and error. Reject new send calls after close.

quit() hangs if the app has already died from a signal.

The guard checks only app.child.exitCode. A process killed by a signal, such as SIGSEGV or SIGABRT from a crash, keeps exitCode === null and sets signalCode. Node has already emitted exit for that process, so the once("exit") listener registered at Line 487 never fires.

The sequence is:

  1. The harness waits 15 s.
  2. The harness sends SIGKILL.
  3. await exited (Line 493) never resolves.

This path runs from the finally in measureSession, seed, warmedHome and measureFirstOpen. When the app crashes during a scene, the harness hangs forever and never reports the original error.

The warmed-home cache key ignores the template.

The key hashes only the app path and the app.asar size and mtime. In two cases a stale warmed home is reused:

  • The user passes a different --home template.
  • The template is deleted and re-seeded, for example after a change to cloneLongChat or LONG_TURNS.

Line 589 then returns the old home-warm-<key>. All later scenes run against the old data. The run gives no warning. Add the template path and its database mtime to the key.

A second OBSERVE_INPUT call doubles every operating input entry.

The switching scene (Line 1229) and the operating scene (Line 1306) both evaluate OBSERVE_INPUT in the same page. Each call resets window.__perfInput and creates a new PerformanceObserver. The first observer is never disconnected. It reads window.__perfInput at push time, so it also pushes into the new array.

During the operating scene, each slow event is therefore recorded twice. operating.slowInputs reports double the real count. inputToPaintMs is not affected because it uses the maximum.

Disconnect the previous observer before you create a new one.

Update OBSERVE_INPUT to disconnect any existing input PerformanceObserver before
resetting window.__perfInput and creating a replacement observer. Store the new
observer on window so subsequent OBSERVE_INPUT evaluations can disconnect it.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

measureLaunch leaks the app process when the scene fails.

quit(session) runs only on the success path. Some steps can throw:

  • waitFor can time out.
  • traced can throw.
  • footprintByRole can throw.

In each case the Electron app keeps running after the harness exits. It holds ports 9351 and 10351, so the next run fails at launch. Every other scene wraps its session in try/finally. Use the same pattern here.

Wrap the post-launch work in measureLaunch in a try/finally, moving the result
construction and return into the try block and awaiting quit(session) in
finally. This ensures the app is shut down if traced, waitFor, or
footprintByRole fails.
