fix(server): iOS device viewer no longer times out on a still simulator screen - #20999
Conversation
…or screen Browsers only paint a multipart/x-mixed-replace part once the next part starts, and the device hub writes a frame only when the screen changes. The iOS app views the simulator over MJPEG, so a still screen never appeared and the viewer failed after 15 seconds with "No video received". The device hub proxy now re-sends the latest complete MJPEG part once after 100 ms of quiet. It follows the hub's Content-Length framing, never injects bytes mid-part, and passes other bodies through untouched. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
ApprovabilityVerdict: Needs Human Approval Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — The fix changes the production device proxy to parse multipart streams, retain complete frames, and replay them after a quiet period across all multipart clients. Although focused and well-tested, the new asynchronous stream state machine and its broad runtime effect merit human review. You can add or adjust custom eligibility rules. Learn more. |

Taking over this one. I'll trim the tests to the minimum and rebuild the implementation on top of your branch. |
Tightens the part tracker to one give-up path and lets it own the still frame slot; trims the tests to the three behaviors a viewer notices. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A header split across chunks concatenated the whole next chunk, copying the frame it carried. Only a header-sized prefix joins the scan now. The common path with no still frame pending pulls directly instead of forking. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Problem
The iOS app's simulator viewer fails with "No video received from the device" whenever the simulator screen is still. The viewer shows the hub's MJPEG stream in an
<img>. Browsers paint amultipart/x-mixed-replacepart only once the next part starts, and the device hub writes a frame only when the screen changes. An idle app under test therefore produces exactly one frame that never paints, and after 15 s the viewer gives up. The same rule hides the last frame of every screen change for any web client on the MJPEG path.Change
DeviceHubProxypassesmultipart/x-mixed-replacebodies throughrepeatStillFrame(apps/server/src/device/mjpegStillFrame.ts). After 100 ms of quiet it re-sends the latest complete part once.--frame,Content-Length, body, CRLF) and repeats only at a part boundary, so it never injects bytes into a frame that is still arriving. Framing it does not recognize turns it off and passes through untouched.Fixing this in the proxy covers every client and connection mode (LAN, tailnet, T3 Connect, SSH device hosts) without changing the vendored hub.
docs/internals/devices.mdgets one sentence on the browser/hub interaction, a constraint the code alone does not show.Taken over from @kakismash's original PR, whose analysis and design this keeps. The part tracker was tightened to a single give-up path and the seven tests were reduced to the four behaviors that matter: the repeat itself, boundary safety, a CRLF split by TCP, and pass-through of unknown framing.

WithoutrepeatStillFrame:0. With it:1; the server log shows the part written at +3 ms and once more at +105 ms, then nothing. The four still-frame tests useTestClock, no sleeps: a still screen repeats only the newest complete frame once; a repeat is never interleaved into a part that is still arriving; a part whose final CRLF arrives in a later chunk is still recognized; bodies without the hub's framing pass through.vp run typecheckinapps/serverandvp linton the changed files: clean. Not verified here: the iOS app itself on a device or simulator, and the Android emulator path (the hub has no MJPEG route for it).
