fix(pi): fork and revert past turns whose session entry was never captured - #20521
Conversation
ApprovabilityVerdict: Approved at Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a focused Pi adapter bug fix that makes previously failing fork and rollback operations recoverable by locating existing session-tree entries, while preserving normal behavior and failing closed when no reliable match exists. The change is isolated to the provider adapter and its tests, with no product-default, schema, deployment, security, billing, or static-analysis suppression impact. - Line 3216: Update the uncaptured boundary used by `piUncapturedForkEntry` to
distinguish a root boundary from an ordinary turn boundary. Set that state in
`piRollbackForkEntry` when `target` is null, and make the `from` calculation
unbounded for a root boundary so earlier adopted native-wake entries remain
eligible; add a direct `thread_start` regression test.

…tured A Pi turn gets its session-tree entry only when it finishes: finalizeTurn reads get_entries and swaps the synthetic turn ref for the prompt's user entry. A turn that never finishes keeps the synthetic ref for good: Pi or the server died mid-turn and recovery cancelled it, Stop's 2 s read timed out, or get_entries failed. Forking or reverting to any point before that turn then fails every time with "Pi fork boundary has no captured session-tree entry", and the retry button replays the identical fork. Pi still has the prompt on disk. When the boundary turn's ref is weak, read the session tree (the live session for a revert, the --fork process for a fork) and take the earliest user entry on the active branch stamped after the target turn finished and before the boundary turn ended, above the target turn's entry. Pi and the server share a clock, so the window is exact; when nothing fits, the error stays. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Filed a triage issue for the bug this PR fixes: #20530. It has the no-key reproduction, the root cause with file references, and links back to this PR as the proposed repair. |

Taking over this one. I'll trim the tests to the minimum, rebuild the implementation to the repo's conventions, and push to this branch. |

Pi turns interrupted before T3 captures their session entry keep a weak turn reference. Forking or reverting past one then fails even though Pi persisted the prompt.
Recover the discarded turn's user entry from the active session branch, bounded by the retained turn's completion and the discarded turn's completion. Reuse the existing branch walker and reject missing ancestry, timestamps, or an unresolved boundary. At thread start, use the earlier of provider thread creation and turn start so adopted wakes are included while inherited parent history stays intact.
Thanks @henrychu04 for the reproduction and original fix in #20521. Maintainer takeover preserves the author's commit and adds the current-main merge, a smaller branch walk, and inherited-history coverage. Adversarial review caught a wrong-cut case where a later steer could hide a wake predating T3's turn; the revised root test reproduces it and the creation-time bound fixes it.
Verification on Linux / Node 24:
packages/provider-pi/src/server/adapter.test.ts; the file now has 96 tests. All three recovery cases fail without the PR fix; the revised root case fails with the pre-review implementation (selects the later steer). The interrupted implementation failed all three; the rebuilt implementation passes them. The change has no visual UI, so behavior tests and the native session files are the proof. macOS, Windows, iOS, Android, and Electron desktop were not verified. Authenticated model-provider behavior was not exercised; the live check used a local mock model.
Native before/after behavior proof.
