fix(devices): retain inventory when AVD enumeration fails - #19974
Conversation
ApprovabilityVerdict: Needs Human Approval Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable — This targeted device-discovery fix changes the existing refresh behavior and adds substantial sequencing guards across readiness, refresh, and host lifecycle operations. The additive contract/UI updates and comprehensive tests reduce risk, but the concurrency and state-publication changes warrant human review. You can add or adjust custom eligibility rules. Added the Scope and approval section in response to the description warning. It explains the focused obvious-bug rationale: failed optional AVD enumeration discards successful hub discovery, and the fix preserves those devices while reporting incomplete discovery until recovery. The existing focused tests and paired web/Android evidence remain linked in the description. No triaged issue or prior maintainer approval is linked. Eligibility under the focused-fix exception remains a maintainer decision, and Macroscope's requested human approval remains outstanding.

Port the focused inventory and recovery fix from upstream PR19974 at881ef1a68a78148a6423707643ec801a93e23fea. Strengthen proof at the actual service and local runner boundaries for iOS-only and physical Android-only hosts, primary hub failures, and timeouts without an exit status. Taking over this one. I'll trim the tests and the refresh-sequencing machinery down to the retention fix itself and push to this branch. |

emulator -list-avdscurrently discards devices already returned by the hub. Keep those devices usable, show a bounded host warning, and clear incomplete-discovery guidance after a successful refresh. Timeout and signal exits count as failures. Successful enumeration still deduplicates AVDs.Rebuilt from @Quicksaver's #19974, retaining the contributor commits. Removed refresh counters, WeakMap state and readiness/lifecycle rewiring; refresh ordering follows main.
Verification: 27 added tests reduced to 5 behavior regressions in existing suites. All five fail against main; 61 tests pass across DeviceService, LocalDeviceHost, DeviceSetup and DeviceMultiHost. Scoped lint, formatting and server/web/contracts typechecks pass. Three independent review rounds (Claude Opus 5.5 and Codex GPT-6-Sol); the reviews found hidden remote-host warnings and a misleading readiness fallback, now corrected in the Device panel and host settings.
Live Linux web proof uses an isolated server and synthetic host/hub responses, with the real device service, WebSocket subscription and Device panel. Failed AVD enumeration retains a physical device and running emulator without exposing command output; recovery clears the warning and adds each stopped AVD once. Empty failed discovery suppresses misleading AVD creation guidance.
Before: current main with the same failing host and hub inventory.
After: rebuilt head retains both devices and shows the bounded host warning.
Recovery clears the warning and deduplicates AVDs.
Remote-host warning in Integrations Settings (synthetic SSH host boundary); a subsequent successful refresh cleared it.
Not verified: real Android SDK/emulator, real SSH device host, macOS, Windows, iOS, Android client or Electron desktop. The live proof is a host-boundary fixture, not native-device verification. No refresh-ordering guarantees are added.
Implemented with Codex GPT-6.1-Sol in T3 Code; tests by Codex GPT-6-Astra.
