fix(server): reveal opens the default Windows file manager - #19526
juliusmarminge merged 4 commits into
Conversation
Reveal on Windows launched explorer.exe directly, which bypasses a replacement file manager registered as the default folder handler. When HKCR\Directory\shell has a default verb, open the containing folder through the shell instead; stock Windows keeps the Explorer /select reveal. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
ApprovabilityVerdict: Approved at Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a narrowly scoped Windows reveal bug fix: custom default file managers are invoked through the shell, while stock Windows keeps the existing Explorer selection path. The production change is isolated and the native Windows and WSL command generation is covered by tests. You can add or adjust custom eligibility rules. Learn more. |

The Windows and WSL tests only compare the generated PowerShell text. The real-PowerShell smoke test calls
buildFileExplorerRevealPowerShellSource, which bypasses the changed registry lookup. A wrongDirectory\shelllookup orInvoke-Itemcall can therefore pass all tests while failing to open the configured file manager. Execute the changed source with controlled custom-verb andnone/empty cases, and assert the resulting invocation.🤖 Prompt for AI Agents

Taking over this one as maintainer for batch desktop-app-02. I will keep this on the original PR, reconcile the Windows reveal path with current main, and refresh focused tests and independent reviews. Thanks @Cody-Stevens for the default file-manager diagnosis and Windows reproduction. |

The semantic coverage request from the original review is addressed in the takeover at 3bc6e46: the existing Windows-only smoke harness now executes the generated reveal source with controlled custom-verb and none/empty registry cases, checking Invoke-Item versus Explorer. These PowerShell cases are skipped on this Linux machine; the PR body retains native Windows validation as outstanding. Two independent full-diff review rounds found no remaining code blockers. |
Windows reveal always launched Explorer, bypassing a replacement file manager registered as the default folder action. This checks the default
Directory\shellverb and opens the containing folder through the shell when a replacement is configured. Stock Windows keeps Explorer’s existing file selection. Replacement managers open the folder without selecting the file.Native Windows and WSL use the same launch path. WSL filenames containing double quotes open their parent through the shell because Explorer’s selection switch cannot encode those filenames. Parent folders are computed before PowerShell so .NET path validation does not reject legal WSL filenames. Existing PowerShell process lifecycle and non-Windows fallbacks are preserved.
Based on @Cody-Stevens’s diagnosis and original implementation in #19526. Merged current main, simplified the source builder, resolved the test conflict using main’s service-level smoke harness, and fixed the quoted-WSL-path bypass.
Verification on headless Linux:
externalLauncher.test.ts: 58 cases (56 passed, 2 skipped) → 60 cases (56 passed, 4 Windows-only skipped). Replacing production with main makes the two Windows/WSL regression checks fail.none, and customopendirectory verbs. It checks the actual emitted script with controlled registry lookup and shell invocation; these Windows-only cases did not run here.No real Windows shell association, replacement manager, or WSL interop was exercised on this Linux host. Native Windows verification remains: stock Explorer selection, a registered replacement manager, and WSL paths including quote-bearing names. macOS, iOS, Android, and Electron desktop were not run. There is no visual layout change; command behavior is documented through focused tests rather than screenshots.
