ApprovabilityVerdict: Approved at Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a localized Muse adapter bug fix that keeps background tool calls and monitor tasks visible and prevents their host from being released prematurely. The protocol additions are backward-compatible, and the included tests cover completion, polling failures, timeouts, and host failure cleanup. You can add or adjust custom eligibility rules. Muse tracked only workflows and subagents as background work. A tool call Muse moved to the background was settled when its turn ended, and a monitor, which shows only in Muse's task list, was never tracked. The thread looked finished and idle release could close the session while the work still ran. Background tool calls now stay tracked until their own terminal event. When a turn completes, the adapter reads task/list before reporting the turn's end, and reads it again when idle release asks while rows are listed. Running tasks show as pending background work, and the thread-scoped probe keeps the run's event stream open until the run has read the update that clears them. A failed or timed-out read keeps the last rows and the host. Refs pingdotgg#19061 Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The Muse adapter now reads task/list after each completed turn. The recorded Muse transcripts predate that call, so the replay rejected it as an unexpected frame and the replay integration test failed. Each completed turn in the six affected transcripts gets the request and a reply with no running tasks, right after its turn/completed frame. The other recorded frames are unchanged. A turn starts from the orchestrator's copy of the thread. When that copy predates a listed monitor, the turn's first thread update drops the row, and the next task/list skipped the update because the list itself had not changed. The task/list read now compares the running tasks with the thread's current rows and publishes the rows whenever they differ. Problem
Muse tracks only workflows and subagents as background work. Two other kinds go unseen, so the thread looks finished and the 30-minute idle release can close the Muse host while the work still runs:
background: true) is marked finished when its turn ends.monitorlaunch is a tool call that returns at once. The running monitor appears only in Muse'stask/list, which the adapter never read.Change
item/completed.task/listbefore it reports the turn's end, and lists rows that are not already tracked items inpendingBackgroundTasksasbackground_task. Idle release reads the list again while rows are listed. Each read compares the running tasks with the thread's current rows and publishes them when they differ, so a turn that started from an older copy of the thread lists its rows again at its completion read.hasPendingBackgroundWorkForThread: this thread's running items and rows, or rows the run's own snapshot still lists, but not a held wake turn. The run keeps ingesting provider-thread updates until it has read the update that clears the rows.Design call: no timer. Muse 1.4.6 sends no event when a registry task such as a monitor ends, so the list is read at turn completion and at the idle probe. A monitor that ends without starting a Muse turn stays listed until the next idle probe (every 30 minutes) or turn. If the read after a turn fails, its monitor is not listed until the next completed turn. The read runs under the adapter's event permit, so item events apply in order around it; a stalled Muse delays the turn's end report by at most the request timeout.
Surface: server (Muse adapter). No UI code changed. The background-work banner and the sidebar status render the provider thread's state.
Scope and approval
Refs #19061, accepted at triage (#19061 (comment)), which suggested tracking
background: truetool calls or reconciling againsttask/list, and wiring Stop totask/stoportask/stopAll. This fixes the pending-work display and the idle release. It does not wire Stop totask/stopAll, because that changes the settled-turninterruptTurnpath and is better reviewed on its own. Until then, Stop on a listed monitor fails with "This Muse turn is no longer active", as it already does for a listed workflow or subagent.Verification
adapter.test.tsadds five fake-Muse cases: a monitor listed bytask/listreaches the thread before the turn's end, stays pending through a failed and a stalled read without closing the host, reports pending work for the run's stale snapshot until the run reads the empty update, and clears when the list drops it; a turn that starts from a thread copy older than the monitor lists it again at its completion read; two background tool calls stay pending past turn end while a foreground one does not, and each clears on its own completion; a background tool call whose later revisions omitbackgroundstays pending until its terminal revision; a host failure clears both kinds. The six recorded Muse replay transcripts get the post-turn
task/listrequest and an empty{"tasks":[]}reply after each completed turn (9 turns), inserted rather than re-recorded. The other recorded frames are unchanged, and replay matching stays strict. At
