Replaces #4850, which GitHub cannot reopen after its head branch was recreated. Merged latest main at fe219c4de18f5ee37c28cbd3914a5569b1579156; conflicts resolved without rewriting PR history.

Problem

Hosts inherit their operating system's computer name, which can be unhelpful when choosing a remote environment. Mobile already lets users edit a manually paired connection's local label, but its T3 Connect connection editor has no way to change the shared host name.

Change

  • Add a persisted Host name setting to Settings → Sharing & access on web and desktop. The existing mobile connection editor edits that same setting for a preferred T3 Connect route; manually paired connections retain device-local Label/URL controls, including when they have an alternate Connect route.
  • Require a connected host, advertised support, and destination settings:write permission. Reuse the guarded settings command and share its existing input-sensitive authorization with the server, preserving provider-only and mixed-settings permissions.
  • Publish the updated descriptor to connected clients without a restart. Primary and Connect labels follow that descriptor; manual aliases remain local. Clearing the setting restores the detected computer name.
  • Persist relay labels only from verified health responses, restricting the update by user, environment, verified public key, active link, and relay probe start time. Using the relay clock for both link writes and ordering accepts valid hosts with clock skew. Record unchanged labels too, so an older response cannot restore a cleared name. Label ordering uses its own label_updated_at watermark and leaves the link lifecycle timestamp used for tunnel limits unchanged. This adds one conditional database update per verified health response; persistence failures leave health status available.
  • Rename other T3 Connect hosts from web and desktop: each Connect row's menu in Settings → Environments opens the same Host name field, gated the same way as mobile. Manual connections keep their device-local labels.
  • Push name changes from the host to the relay (PUT /v1/environments/:environmentId/label, environment-authenticated), so Connect clients don't wait for the next status check. The relay stamps the push with its own clock and applies the same ordering guard, so an earlier status check cannot restore the old name. Pushes run one at a time with bounded retries. Startup resends the current name; managed-tunnel status checks also correct lost pushes.

Brings over the remote web rename and relay push from #7267, by @inayayousfi. That PR's duplicate-name confirmation and separate mobile rename screen are not included: duplicate names remain allowed, and mobile renames from the existing connection editor.

  • Keep shared display names consistent in usage details, account links, diagnostics, and slow-request details. Preserve newer socket names across disconnects until fresh discovery arrives, including clearing back to the computer name. Retain names through discovery failures while clearing stale health descriptors.
  • Preserve the last successfully decoded or committed host name when settings are malformed or unreadable; a valid explicit clear still restores the detected name.

Scope and approval

This continues the host-naming work from #4850 and includes the requested mobile remote editor using the existing settings permission gate. All changes support choosing, editing, and displaying that one environment name. Maintainer review of direction and scope remains pending; this replacement does not claim approval from the closed PR.

Verification

  • Latest review fixes: TMPDIR=/private/tmp vp run check:changed passed format, lint, both knip checks, GraphQL generation, unused-patch checks, typechecks for 36 packages/dependents, and all 786 tests across 47 files. The canonical temp path avoids the known macOS /var symlink assertion.

  • Regression coverage includes malformed settings and read failures retaining the last committed name, explicit clearing, decoded Duration authorization, stale probe ordering and verified keys, tunnel-limit accounting with PostgreSQL-compatible PGlite, startup relay delivery, offline refresh failures/account changes, rename/clear ordering across disconnects, provider-inclusive projections, manual aliases, and Usage Limits labels.

  • Follow-up relay regressions cover immediate same-name retries after exhausted attempts, uncertain delivery, unlink/relink delivery markers, and same-key relinks racing newer pushes in both SQL commit orders. Proof labels use the verified relay challenge time, so relink completion cannot suppress a newer in-flight push; host clock skew, key rotation, revocation, and legacy NULL watermarks remain covered.

  • Independent adversarial reviews used gpt-6-astra (medium), claude-fable-5-1 (xhigh), gpt-6.1-sol (xhigh), and claude-opus-5-5 (xhigh). Confirmed findings were fixed and re-reviewed; the final corrective review found no actionable issues. These corrections were validated with focused regressions and changed-file checks; the client evidence below comes from the earlier feature verification.

  • Initial restoration: 332 focused tests across settings contracts, server descriptors/streams, client projections, relay discovery/persistence, and settings search. Eight focused ServerEnvironment cases also passed; the existing macOS /var versus /private/var install-ownership case was excluded after reproducing it on the baseline.

  • Mobile editor and permission changes: 84 focused tests across seven files, including destination grants and revocation, provider-only/mixed settings, rename/clear routing, manual aliases with alternate relay routes, live label projection, and subscription stability.

  • Relay review fixes: 28 tests across EnvironmentConnector.test.ts and EnvironmentLinks.test.ts, covering the captured key, SQL restriction, a signed host clock 30 seconds behind after relinking, delayed rename/reset responses with conflicting host times, and persistence-failure behavior. Concurrency tests use Deferred/TestClock without sleeps or polling.

  • Web rename and relay push: relay tests for the environment-authenticated endpoint (own key only, relay timestamp, 401 for another environment) and the user-less link update; a server test that the effective name is pushed on change, is not resent for unrelated settings changes, and falls back to the detected name when cleared. 166 relay tests and the touched server tests pass.

  • Scoped lint and all affected workspace typechecks passed: contracts, client-runtime, server, web, mobile, and relay. Desktop and iOS/Android native development clients built during restoration; native-client fingerprint checks reused those compatible clients for the mobile editor pass. git diff --check passed.

  • Actual clients: desktop web (including the T3 preview browser), macOS Electron, iPhone 18 Pro (iOS 27.0), iPad Pro 11-inch M5 (iOS 26.5), and Android fold reference emulator folded/unfolded. Observed native rename and clear, live updates reaching other clients, Electron rename/clear, and saved settings surviving reload/restart.

  • Paired Android with a real scoped demo session lacking settings:write: Host name and Save were disabled. Reordered its manual route first, saved a local alias with the alternate Connect route retained, and reloaded: the alias remained local while the shared host name stayed unchanged.

All data is synthetic showcase projects/threads in isolated homes with a neutral computer-name fixture. No local userdata was copied. Native Connect editor tests use a synthetic preferred Relay catalog route and an authenticated direct fallback to the demo backend; they verify the real editor, guarded RPC, grants, and projections, but do not exercise live T3 Connect transport. Devices owned by other sessions were left alone. Fixture tooling and evidence are outside the code branch.

Web rename of a remote Connect host

Verified in the T3 preview browser against two isolated demo servers (no local userdata). The remote host was paired directly, then its saved entry was given a preferred T3 Connect route with the direct route as fallback, the same synthetic setup as the native pass.

  • A manual connection's row menu has no Host name item; once T3 Connect is the preferred route, it does.
  • Renaming to “Pocket Mac” updated the row immediately and was saved in the remote host's own settings; the local host's name was unchanged.
  • Clearing the field restored the remote host's detected computer name.
  • Paired with a session lacking settings:write, the field is disabled with “You need permission to update this environment’s settings.”
  • With the remote host linked to a local stand-in relay, each rename sent one PUT /v1/environments/:environmentId/label with the environment credential: {"label":"Pocket Mac"}, then the detected name after clearing. No other relay requests were made.
Before renaming Renamed Cleared
Remote Connect host named Demo Workstation Remote host renamed to Pocket Mac Cleared host name restores Demo Workstation

Web rename and clear — 8 seconds. The remote host's detected name is a neutral “Demo Workstation” fixture.

macOS Electron was not re-run for this change; it renders the same Settings component.

Live T3 Connect transport is unverified. A maintainer needs to enable 🚀 Mobile Continuous Deployment for the configured Connect preview, with an available EXPO_TOKEN. That preview does not deploy this PR's relay changes, so full relay persistence verification also needs an updated relay deployment.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at a257077

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — Adds shared host display names while preserving device-local aliases and existing naming defaults. Updates are permission-gated, reversible, and limited to display metadata, with safeguards against stale relay names.

You can add or adjust custom eligibility rules. Learn more.

Walkthrough

The pull request adds configurable environment host names. Server settings and descriptors carry the label; relay synchronization and client projections propagate it. Web and mobile settings can edit host names, and client views use the derived label.

Changes: Environment labels

Layer / File(s) Summary
Environment label settings and descriptors
packages/contracts/src/settings.ts, packages/contracts/src/environment.ts, apps/server/src/environment/*, apps/server/src/serverSettings.ts, apps/server/src/server.ts
Server settings define environment labels. Descriptors use configured labels or a default label and advertise label support.
Settings updates and authorization
packages/contracts/src/server.ts, packages/contracts/src/clientRpcPermissions.ts, apps/server/src/ws.ts, apps/server/src/auth/*, packages/client-runtime/src/state/*
Settings updates can carry environment descriptors. Client projections retain descriptors when later events omit them. RPC and client-side authorization check settings and provider changes.
Relay synchronization and persistence
packages/contracts/src/relay.ts, apps/server/src/relay/*, infra/relay/src/environments/*, infra/relay/src/http/*, infra/relay/src/persistence/*, infra/relay/migrations/postgres/*
The server sends labels to the relay. The relay records authenticated labels and updates verified environment links with timestamp constraints. Client discovery adopts descriptor labels and retains known environments during refresh failures.
Client discovery and label presentation
packages/client-runtime/src/relay/*, packages/client-runtime/src/state/*, packages/client-runtime/src/connection/*, packages/shared/src/*, apps/mobile/src/state/*, apps/web/src/state/*, apps/mobile/src/features/*, apps/web/src/components/*
Client discovery retains known environments through refresh and connectivity states. Primary and relay targets use configured or discovered labels when available; other connection types retain their target labels. Notices, usage displays, and connection messages use derived labels.
Web and mobile host-name editing
apps/web/src/components/settings/*, apps/mobile/src/features/connection/*, docs/user/remote-access.md
Web and mobile settings edit host names when connection, capability, and permission conditions are met. Mobile routes relay-host updates to server settings and other edits to local bearer settings.

Possibly related issues

  • pingdotgg/t3code#15683 — The pull request persists changed host labels and propagates them to connected clients and the relay.
  • pingdotgg/t3code#25505 — The pull request adds a host-name setting that overrides the detected computer name.

Merge Risk: Low · up to a2570

A provider-secret read failure may cause cloud health to show the detected computer name instead of the configured host name. Confirm or accept that bounded risk before merging.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to fe948

Host-name changes remain subject to the destination host’s permissions and identity checks. No new cross-account access was established. Residual uncertainty concerns synchronization ordering and mixed-version behavior, rather than increased privileges.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — A settings-authorized client can change the selected host’s shared display name. A credential-authenticated host push can update all active relay links matching that host’s environment ID and public key; a health-driven update is additionally limited to the requesting user. These writes change labels and timestamps, not endpoints, keys, or grants.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — No cross-environment label-write bypass was established in the inspected production paths. The HTTP handler checks the authenticated environment against the path, and the health path verifies the response before persistence. This conclusion is bounded to those paths and does not establish complete security coverage.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Health-response verification binds the response to the requested environment, nonce, request time, relay issuer, and linked public key. Persistence independently requires matching environment and key, excludes revoked links, and checks ordering. Revocation and key replacement prevent stale writes from crossing those lifecycle boundaries.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Label persistence errors are logged and ignored by health synchronization, leaving the verified health result available. Unchanged labels also advance ordering state. The equal-timestamp limitation affects display-state convergence; the inspected persistence predicates continue to enforce environment, key, user, and active-link boundaries.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — If clearing a name must strictly prevent every older response from restoring it, define a tie-breaking revision or sequence policy for equal relay timestamps. This is a state-integrity proposal, not an established security vulnerability.

The new remote Host name field in the web Connections row menu still needs UI verification. The PR says it has not been exercised in a real client, and the supplied web images show the local host setting. Add before/after images of the remote editor and a short recording of renaming and clearing a remote host, with the client and observed results, then mark this ready for review.

The web row-menu Host name field is now verified in a real client. See “Web rename of a remote Connect host” in the description: rename, clear, the missing-settings:write state, and the relay push, with screenshots.

The new manual checks cover the remote web editor. Both supplied screenshots show Pocket Mac after renaming, so the before/after and interaction evidence is still incomplete. Please add the remote row before renaming and a short web recording showing rename and clear, then mark this ready again.

Move the label capability's identity check into the service.

The new handler checks the requested environment ID before it calls EnvironmentLinks.recordEnvironmentLabel. Give one service operation the authenticated principal and requested ID, and let that operation enforce the match. Keep this handler to a service call and error mapping. This keeps the same check available to other entry points.

As per coding guidelines, “A transport handler does three things: decode the request, call one service method, and map the service's typed errors to the transport's error. Nothing else.” The path instructions require changed code to follow that rule.

Added the remote row before renaming, after renaming, and after clearing, plus an 8-second web recording of rename and clear, under “Web rename of a remote Connect host” in the description.

@coderabbitai On the Api.ts:1402 nitpick: leaving it as is. requireOwnEnvironment is this group's shared authorization guard. It compares the path to the principal the environment auth middleware provides, and publishAgentActivity, updateLinkPreferences and wakeHeldHooks all use it the same way. The handler authorizes, makes one EnvironmentLinks.recordEnvironmentLabel call, and maps errors. Moving the check into the service for this route alone would make it the odd one out.

@PixPMusic Thanks for the clarification. Keeping requireOwnEnvironment in the handler follows the group’s shared authorization pattern. Moving the check into the service for this route alone is unnecessary. I withdraw the nitpick.

Learning: In `infra/relay/src/http/Api.ts`, `requireOwnEnvironment` is the environment-authenticated route group's shared authorization guard. It compares the path environment ID with the principal supplied by environment auth middleware. `publishAgentActivity`, `updateLinkPreferences`, `wakeHeldHooks`, and `updateEnvironmentLabel` use this handler-level pattern. Do not recommend moving this check into `EnvironmentLinks.recordEnvironmentLabel` solely for the label route.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Read the host name without materializing provider secrets.

If an unrelated provider secret cannot be read, serverSettings.getSettings fails and this fallback replaces a configured host name with defaultLabel. A cloud health response can then advertise the wrong host name. Read the label from the cached settings independently of provider-secret materialization; reserve the empty-label fallback for an empty configured label. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

291-297: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Quick win

Test the production getEnvironmentLabel accessor.

The failed-secret-read case uses ServerSettings.layerTest and overrides getSettings, but ServerEnvironment.getDescriptor calls getEnvironmentLabel. Add a focused case to apps/server/src/serverSettings.test.ts that uses the production ServerSettingsModule.layer, a secret-bearing setting, and layerFailingSecretStore, then calls service.getEnvironmentLabel and asserts the configured label.

This is the lowest layer for the changed server behavior and prevents a regression where getEnvironmentLabel materializes provider secrets.
