Problem

On an Android tablet, launching T3 Code while the tablet is held in landscape opens the app in a narrow, portrait-shaped window that covers about half the screen, with the compact phone layout (single thread list). Rotating to portrait and back to landscape fixes it: the app then fills the screen with the split sidebar and detail panes.

Repro: Android tablet, auto-rotate on, hold it in landscape, cold-launch the app.

Root cause

withAndroidTabletOrientation kept android:screenOrientation="portrait" (written by the top-level orientation: "portrait") on MainActivity, and lifted the lock for tablets in onCreate, after super.onCreate. A tablet launched in landscape against a portrait manifest starts letterboxed in a portrait-shaped window. Lifting the lock afterwards does not resize that window until the device rotates, and the narrow window makes deriveLayout pick the compact layout.

Change

The intended orientation policy is unchanged: portrait on phones, FULL_USER on tablets (smallest width >= 600dp), re-evaluated on fold/unfold. Only how Android applies it at launch changes. The plugin now:

  • removes android:screenOrientation from MainActivity in the manifest, so the activity never starts locked, and
  • calls applyTabletOrientation() before super.onCreate, so phones request the portrait lock before the activity's content is created.

configChanges still includes orientation|screenSize|smallestScreenSize, so rotation and fold/unfold reach onConfigurationChanged without recreating the activity. iOS is untouched: the plugin only registers Android mods, and the top-level orientation still applies there.

This changes the generated Android native project, so it ships with a store build, not an OTA update.

Scope and approval

A small, focused fix for an obvious bug in one config plugin. It removes a launch-only letterbox and does not change the phone/tablet orientation policy or any other default.

Verification

Real device: Xiaomi Pad 6, HyperOS 2.0.14.0, Android 14

  • Before: held the tablet in landscape and cold-launched the app. It opened letterboxed in a portrait-shaped window with the compact phone layout, and filled the screen only after a rotation.
  • After: installed this branch's debug build and cold-launched it in landscape. It opens full screen with the split sidebar and detail layout, and dumpsys activity reports areBoundsLetterboxed=false for the app.
Before (Mi Pad 6, landscape cold launch) After (Mi Pad 6, landscape cold launch)

Thread titles and messages are blurred. The gear at the top right of the after shot is the debug build's dev menu.

Emulator: Pixel Tablet, Android 16 (API 36)

Landscape cold launch, rotate to portrait, rotate back. The tablet layout fills the screen each time. The emulator cannot show the original bug, because Android 16 ignores orientation locks on large screens for apps targeting SDK 36, so the before/after pair above comes from the Mi Pad 6.

After, rotated to portrait After, rotated back to landscape

Generated native project (this app's real config)

Ran APP_VARIANT=development expo prebuild --platform android --no-install --clean with the plugin from main and from this branch, and diffed the output. Only two lines change:

  • AndroidManifest.xml: MainActivity loses android:screenOrientation="portrait". configChanges is unchanged.
  • MainActivity.kt: applyTabletOrientation() moves from after super.onCreate(null) to before the expo-splashscreen block and super.onCreate(null).

The generated MainActivity.kt has one copy of each import, onConfigurationChanged, and applyTabletOrientation. Running prebuild a second time without --clean leaves both files byte-identical. The splash theme (Theme.SplashScreen) is not translucent, so requesting an orientation is allowed on API 26 (minSdk is 24).

Tests

apps/mobile/plugins/withAndroidTabletOrientation.test.ts runs the plugin's mods behind Expo's built-in orientation plugin, in prebuild's order. It checks that the manifest lock is removed and configChanges is kept, that applyTabletOrientation() runs before super.onCreate, that imports and methods are added once, that a second run changes nothing, and that a changed template fails loudly. Two of the four tests fail against the plugin on main.

  • vp test run --config ../../vite.config.ts --dir . plugins/withAndroidTabletOrientation.test.ts (in apps/mobile): 4 passed
  • vpr typecheck (in apps/mobile): passed
  • vp lint and vp fmt --check on the two changed files: passed

Not checked

  • Phones. No Android phone or phone emulator was available. To check: on a phone held in landscape with auto-rotate on, cold-launch the app and confirm it opens in portrait and stays portrait. Because the manifest no longer pins portrait, the system splash window may show in landscape for a moment before onCreate requests portrait. That case is untested.
  • A cold-launch screen recording on the tablet.

Claude Opus 5.5 via Claude Code in T3 Code.

The manifest locked MainActivity to portrait and the tablet unlock ran in
onCreate. A tablet launched in landscape started letterboxed in a
portrait-shaped window with the phone layout, and only filled the screen
after a rotation. Drop the manifest lock and choose the orientation at
runtime before super.onCreate.

Approvability

Verdict: Not approved

Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable — This focused native Android fix changes the generated MainActivity orientation default and cold-launch behavior for tablets, even though the post-startup phone/tablet policy remains the same. Because it changes a production product default, the change warrants human review.

Note

This comment is posted by Julius' dot

The plugin checks cover the generated manifest and Kotlin, but the Android landscape launch is still untested. Please add before/after screenshots and a short cold-launch recording on an Android tablet, with the device and Android version, and confirm phones still launch in portrait. The verification guide requires evidence of the changed UI behavior. Please keep this in draft until that evidence is added.

📝 Walkthrough

The Android plugin removes the main activity’s manifest orientation setting and inserts the orientation call before super.onCreate(null). Tests check manifest changes, generated activity content, repeated application, and missing-anchor handling.

Review details

Systems and components

  • observed — apps/mobile (service) was modified; 2 changed files map to changed impact.

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in apps/mobile/plugins/withAndroidTabletOrientation.cjs: The plugin imports AndroidConfig; its comments now describe leaving the manifest orientation unlocked and applying the phone/tablet orientation policy before activity content is created.
  • observed — Modified behavior in apps/mobile/plugins/withAndroidTabletOrientation.cjs: The on-create insertion string is reformatted. New findAnchor centralizes anchor lookup and throws the existing template-change error when an anchor is absent; insertBefore adds content before an anchor, and insertAfter now uses findAnchor instead of performing its own lookup and error handling.
  • observed — Modified behavior in apps/mobile/plugins/withAndroidTabletOrientation.cjs: A manifest mod now deletes android:screenOrientation from the main activity before the plugin applies its MainActivity changes.
  • observed — Modified behavior in apps/mobile/plugins/withAndroidTabletOrientation.cjs: The orientation call is inserted before super.onCreate(null) rather than after it.

Run the plugin's manifest and MainActivity mods behind Expo's built-in
orientation plugin, in prebuild's order. The tests check that the portrait
lock is removed from the manifest, configChanges still covers rotation and
fold/unfold, applyTabletOrientation() runs before super.onCreate, the
imports and methods are added once, and a second run changes nothing.
Two of the tests fail against the previous plugin.

Also soften a comment that claimed phones never draw a landscape frame.
The code requests portrait before the content is created; the system
splash window on a phone has not been checked.

@juliusmarminge, re your verification note:

  • Tablet cold launch, real device: tested on a Xiaomi Pad 6 (HyperOS 2.0.14.0, Android 14). Before/after screenshots of the landscape cold launch are in the description. The fixed build opens full screen with the split layout, and dumpsys activity reports areBoundsLetterboxed=false. Rotation was also checked on a Pixel Tablet emulator (Android 16).
  • Added since: 69497b0 adds focused tests for the plugin's manifest and MainActivity output, including idempotency. Two of them fail against the plugin on main. I also ran expo prebuild for Android with this app's config against main and this branch. Only the manifest screenOrientation and the position of applyTabletOrientation() change, and a second prebuild leaves both files unchanged.
  • Still missing: the cold-launch recording and the phone check. I did not have the tablet or an Android phone/emulator for this update. The description lists the phone case to check.

Open for maintainer review: the phone launch path (the system splash may show in landscape for a moment on a phone held in landscape), the CI runs waiting for approval, and the Macroscope human-review verdict.

Assert each required configChanges flag independently.

The current contiguous-substring check depends on flag order. A harmless reorder or inserted flag can fail the test even when all required flags remain. Preserve coverage for all five flags currently asserted:
