Problem

The window title flashes the hardcoded "T3 Code (Beta)" name before the correct one, like "T3 Code" or "T3 Code (Nightly)", is applied. It also never says what you are working on: window previews, browser tabs, window switchers, and time trackers only ever see the app name.

Other apps already show this context, like Cursor with the open project and Discord with the active channel:

Cursor Discord
Cursor window preview showing the open project beneath the app name Discord window preview showing the active channel beneath the app name

Change

  • Right name from first paint. index.html ships a neutral T3 Code title. Desktop sets it from the preload-injected branding before page scripts run, and a Vite transformIndexHtml plugin writes the hosted-channel, Dev, or Beta label into the web bundle, so nothing has to be corrected after load. The plugin and branding.ts resolve the label through one shared function, so the bootstrap title cannot drift from the one the app sets.
  • Thread context. ChatView publishes the active project and thread titles to a small store, and the root DocumentTitleSync resolves the title from it. Desktop shows my-project / Fix login bug; browser tabs add — <app name>. With no thread open, the title is the app name. It updates live on rename and when a generated title arrives.
  • Desktop window. Electron's page-title-updated handler now keeps the renderer title instead of resetting to the app name on every load. Empty titles still fall back to the app name.

The web and desktop changes belong to the same fix: the desktop window discarded whatever title the renderer set, so the renderer change alone would not reach the OS window. Mobile has no window title.

Scope and approval

This replaces #15742, which was closed during the cleanup of PRs built with an older model. It is a fresh rewrite on current main with Claude Opus 5.5, not a rebase. Behavior matches #15742; the implementation is smaller:

  • The bootstrap title plugin reads Vite's isProduction, the flag behind import.meta.env.DEV, so dev and bundled dev both get the Dev label without a second fix.
  • ChatView gains one useWindowTitleThread hook call instead of separate set and clear effects.
  • The desktop handler only steps in for blank titles and otherwise lets Electron apply the renderer title.
  • The user docs section from fix(clients): show the right app name and thread context #15742 was dropped, since it described UI state rather than a task.

#15742 replaced #8570, which was closed pending a recording of the title behavior. That comment confirms the direction is accepted, citing the maintainer decision in #6477, which named this work (then #7826, later superseded by #8570) as the retained window title implementation because it "preserves app identity and updates titles during streaming and rename".

Verification

Tested build: recorded on v0.0.45 at d4e6e4674 against main at 83fbbc18f (before), Electron 44.4.5 on Linux (KDE Wayland, XWayland window). Development mode with the Vite renderer, isolated test homes seeded with one fixture project and thread. The head of this PR, bf2cb1f5b, is that commit rebased onto main at 044f07257. The rebases only change the production fallback label from Alpha to Beta to match #20032 and drop the branding unit tests that #22557 deleted; the checks below were rerun on it.

Desktop, before/after (main left, this PR right)

window-title-desktop-before-after.mp4

The strip above each window shows the real OS window title (_NET_WM_NAME via xprop -spy). It only reads the title and never sets it. Both sides run the same scripted steps at normal speed:

  • Reload in Settings: both stay T3 Code (Dev) through the reload, with no Alpha title.
  • Open a thread: main stays T3 Code (Dev); this PR shows server / Fix login bug.
  • Rename from the sidebar: this PR updates live to server / Works on my machine with no reload; main does not change.
  • Open Settings: both return to T3 Code (Dev) with no leftover thread name.

Window preview, before/after

Before, the window preview showed only the app name. After, a second line shows the active project and thread. These KDE Plasma previews were captured during #8570; the desktop video above shows this branch setting the same OS title.

Before After
Window preview showing only the app name Window preview showing the active project and thread title beneath the app name

Web, before then after

window-title-web-before-after.mp4

Browser recordings omit the tab strip, so a temporary, read-only panel logs every document.title change with its time since navigation. It was removed after recording.

  • main: T3 Code (Alpha) at 50 ms, then T3 Code (Dev) at 2909 ms. The thread never appears in the title, even after a rename.
  • This PR: T3 Code (Dev) at 12 ms, then server / Fix login bug — T3 Code (Dev). A rename updates it live, and Settings returns it to T3 Code (Dev).

Checks: Web and desktop typecheck pass, vp test run src/window/DesktopWindow.test.ts passes, and a production web build stamps <title>T3 Code (Beta)</title>, or <title>T3 Code (Nightly)</title> with VITE_HOSTED_APP_CHANNEL=nightly. #22557 deleted branding.test.ts as low-signal, so this PR no longer adds title-formatting unit tests there.

Not covered by the recordings: macOS and Windows desktop builds, packaged builds, bundled dev, and hosted Latest or Nightly web builds. Of these, only the Beta and Nightly build titles above were checked.

Built with Claude Opus 5.5 via Claude Code in T3 Code.

This PR was created with Claude Opus 5.5 (via Claude Code in T3 Code). It replaces #15742, which was closed because it was built with Fable 5. The change was rewritten from scratch on current main with Opus 5.5 rather than rebased, and the before/after recordings in the description were re-recorded against this branch.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at fc902a4

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a focused window-title and branding fix that preserves existing app-name defaults while adding active project/thread context. Its runtime impact is limited to desktop window and browser tab presentation, with no schema, security, deployment, or static-analysis changes.

📝 Walkthrough

Web and desktop titles now use app branding. Web titles can include project and thread context. Desktop title handling preserves nonblank renderer titles and uses the application name when the renderer title is blank.

Changes: Window Title and Branding

Layer / File(s) Summary
Branding labels and initial title
apps/web/src/branding.logic.ts, apps/web/src/branding.ts, apps/web/vite.config.ts, apps/web/index.html
Hosted-channel labels resolve to “Nightly” or “Latest” when recognized. Other builds use “Dev” or “Beta”. The initial page title uses the formatted app display name when desktop branding is available.
Project and thread title synchronization
apps/web/src/branding.logic.ts, apps/web/src/windowTitleStore.ts, apps/web/src/components/ChatView.tsx, apps/web/src/routes/__root.tsx
ChatView publishes the active project and thread titles. DocumentTitleSync uses those titles and app branding to set the document title. Error pages also render DocumentTitleSync.
Desktop renderer title handling
apps/desktop/src/window/DesktopWindow.ts
DesktopWindow keeps nonblank renderer titles, falls back to the application name for blank titles, and no longer resets the title after a successful page load.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to fc902

The title changes appear ready to merge after normal checks; no unresolved title-handling defect was identified.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to fc902

Active project and conversation names become visible in browser tabs and desktop window titles. This creates a limited privacy trade-off for sensitive names. The inspected title flow does not add code execution, access permissions, or privileged operations.

Retained concerns

  • Low · security · inferred: Project and thread names now leave the main application view through browser and native window titles. If those names contain confidential information, people viewing window previews or software with title-reading access could capture it. This exposure is intentional, but broader than the base behavior; no unauthorized reader or collection is demonstrated.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The new disclosure surface is the active client's project and thread title text. This path does not publish message bodies or enumerate other environments' threads. Any further collection depends on an observer's existing ability to view browser or desktop titles.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The supported privacy scenario is sensitive title text reaching browser or OS chrome and then being seen by a person or an already-authorized title reader. The source establishes the first step, not the existence of an external reader, transmission, retention, or unauthorized access.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Renderer title text now controls nonblank native window titles; blank titles retain the application-name fallback. This changes presentation ownership without granting the title strings execution or permission-setting authority. Build-time HTML titles use a fixed base name and allowlisted stage labels.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Consider an app-name-only privacy option for users whose project or conversation names are sensitive. This would reduce incidental title disclosure without treating the intentional contextual-title feature as a verified exploit.

Thanks! Since I didn't see it in the PR description want to repeat at least one use-case.
(Similar to #6477)

Time tracking applications.
Many time tracking applications use pattern matching on the window title as their fallback approach.
Currently it will show "T3 Code (Alpha): 2 hours" without being able to differentiate projects or tasks.

Browsers / IDEs will often have addons for detailed tracking, but I wouldn't implement addons in t3code just for that. The title looks like a reasonable method, especially when projects are in the title.

Make sure the application name stays in the title though.
Because grouping activity by application likewise matters for this. Some software might be able to pull this from other places, like the process name, but anecdotally I see other software keep their own name as either prefix or suffix.
For example: {Project} / {Thread title} — T3 Code (Alpha)

(Yes I'm a human who knows how to type — 😂)

Thanks for addressing window titles. Adding project and thread context changes product behavior beyond correcting the stale startup label, so it requires prior approval. Please submit the focused startup-label fix separately, or get explicit direction and scope approval in an Ideas discussion before requesting reconsideration of the context change.

@maria-rcks Thanks for looking at this. The project and thread context already has maintainer approval. On #8570, Julius confirmed the window title direction is accepted, citing the maintainer decision in #6477 that kept this work as the window title implementation because it "preserves app identity and updates titles during streaming and rename." #8570 was closed only pending a recording of launch or reload, a live title update, and navigation back to no active thread.

This PR is that same change. It went through #15742, which was closed for being built with Fable 5, and was then rewritten on current main with Opus 5.5. The recordings Julius asked for are in the description under Verification, along with the tested build and observed results. The Scope and approval section links the same chain.

Could you reopen this for reconsideration?

Adding a concrete use case: I track my time with Timing (timingapp.com) on macOS. It lists activities per app using the window title: Slack shows the channel/person, Arc shows each page I had open. T3 Code is now the app I spend the most time in, yet Timing can only show "T3 Code (Beta) — no additional information" for it, so I can't tell which project or thread the time went to.

I checked the current build (0.1.0): the renderer never sets document.title, and the main window's page-title-updated handler forces environment.displayName. That's exactly what this PR addresses. Would love to see it land. Happy to test a build against Timing.

The window title flashed "T3 Code (Alpha)" on every channel before the
real name landed, and never said what you were working on, so window
switchers, browser tabs, and time trackers only ever saw the app name.

index.html now ships a neutral title. A Vite plugin stamps the web
build's channel into it from the same stage-label logic branding.ts
uses, and desktop swaps in its preload-injected branding before first
paint. ChatView publishes the open project and thread to a small store
that DocumentTitleSync renders: `project / thread` on desktop, with
` — <app name>` added in browser tabs, and the app name with no thread
open. The desktop window now keeps the renderer's title instead of
resetting it to the app name, falling back only for blank titles.
