ApprovabilityVerdict: Not approved Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable — This PR introduces a substantial server-side workflow for fetching linked repositories into disposable Git repositories and broadens MCP guide generation to repositories without matching checkouts. The added provider routing, network/Git operations, cleanup, and new user-facing capability warrant human review. You can add or adjust custom eligibility rules. Learn more. |

Note This comment is posted by Julius' dot The linked-guide failure is clear, but this also changes MCP routing to use the caller's project or the first available project and fetches a repository that has no matching checkout. Should guides support that fallback, or should users first add the repository as a project? The direction discussed in #17166 covers PR reads, not guide checkout creation. Please confirm this scope under the prior-approval rule. |

The proposed behavior is to support an explicit Write guide request for a PR already linked to a thread, including a No project thread, without requiring a matching repository project. Opening a guide still only reads stored state; the temporary repository is fetched when generation is explicitly requested. #17166 covered PR metadata reads. I updated the scope section to acknowledge that guide checkout creation needs explicit maintainer approval, rather than claiming the focused bug-fix exception. I also removed the first-available-project fallback in e1feb9b. MCP now prefers a matching project or uses the calling thread's project; calls without a thread still require a matching project. This avoids choosing arbitrary project settings. CodeRabbit's inherited Git environment finding is fixed in d3b9f7b. Guide-managed Git commands clear repository/index overrides. The new real-Git regression fails against the previous head and passes with the fix, preserving unrelated refs, HEAD, index, staged/dirty files, and FETCH_HEAD. All 42 focused tests, server typecheck, and targeted lint/format checks pass locally; CI is rerunning on e1feb9b. Please confirm whether explicit linked-guide generation with this scoped temporary-checkout fallback is approved. |

I hit this today on
I'd like to write the guide from the thread where I'm doing the work without adding a second project for upstream. The explicit Write guide fallback proposed here would cover that workflow. Adding this reproduction in support of the scope request. |
Problem
Linked PRs can open from a No project thread or an unrelated checkout, but writing a review guide fails with “Guides are written from this project's checkout.” The MCP guide tools also reject a repository without a matching project. #17167 fixed linked-PR metadata refresh, but did not remove these guide restrictions.
Change
Keep the existing matching-checkout path. Otherwise, resolve the linked PR's clone URL through its source-control provider and fetch its base, exact head, and available stack heads into a disposable Git repository. The model reads the same full-history comparison and the existing guide normalization still applies. Scoped cleanup removes the checkout after success, failure, or interruption, without touching the thread's unrelated workspace. Guide-managed Git commands clear inherited repository, index, and object-store overrides across remote selection, creation, reads, and cleanup, including the matching-worktree path. Origin-first remote selection is preserved. Rejected commit-SHA fetches use the provider-specific head ref, including GitLab merge-request refs.
The MCP guide tools prefer a matching project and otherwise use the calling thread's project. Calls without a thread still require a matching project; no arbitrary project's settings are selected. Update their guidance and the existing user documentation accordingly. Preserve project model/instruction settings, same-head single flight, stale guides, and run ownership.
Scope and approval
This PR proposes allowing guides for already-linked PRs without requiring users to add the repository as a project. #17166 and #17167 established metadata reads, not approval of guide checkout creation. Explicit maintainer approval of this guide fallback is pending, as requested in Julius's scope review; the PR no longer claims the focused bug-fix exception.
The server service is shared by web, desktop, mobile, and MCP; no client UI or wire-contract changes are needed. MCP fallback is limited to the calling thread's project, while contextless calls retain the matching-project requirement.
#18312 is complementary: it corrects upstream remote selection in matching fork checkouts. This change leaves that path's remote selection unchanged and adds the missing path for absent or unrelated checkouts. Existing provider host-routing and Git credential requirements remain in place.
GitLab guide generation also requires the provider to report the merge request's head commit. Its decoder currently drops that value; #18608 fixes this separate metadata bug. This PR does not replace that fix: both are needed for GitLab guides without matching checkouts.
