Problem

After #18334, turning on a setting that an older environment doesn't know shows an error naming that environment. The row still counts the environment, though, so with All environments selected the switch stays mixed for good. A click on a mixed switch turns the setting on everywhere, so you can never get back to Off from that scope. The older environment isn't really "off": it has no such setting.

Fix

A setting an environment can't store no longer counts toward that row. Bulk-edit tools such as Jira, Intune and VS Code treat targets that can't take a value the same way.

  • Which environments can't store which settings. Servers now send capabilities.settingsKeys, the list of setting keys they store. A key missing from the list is unsupported there. Older servers don't send the list, so the client falls back to the keys fix(web): settings warn when an environment silently drops a setting #18334 already sees dropped on a save. It remembers those for the session, keyed by the server's version, so updating the environment clears them.
  • Mixed state compares only the environments that can store the setting, and the row shows the value from one of them.
  • Writes skip keys an environment can't store, at environment and project scope. If no selected environment can store a setting, the row is disabled with "Update T3 Code on pinot to use this setting."
  • The inheritance popover says "Not supported. Update T3 Code on this environment to use this setting." instead of a misleading "Inherits / Default Off". The row's indicator summary names the environment too.

Evidence

Two local environments: oliverpad (this branch) and pinot, a server built without reviewGuidesEnabled, standing in for an older build. All environments selected.

Recording

Both environments are selected. oliverpad has Review guides on and pinot (too old to send the list) doesn't have the setting, so the row starts mixed. Each video clicks the switch twice and opens the inheritance popover after each click.

Before (#18334): both clicks leave the switch mixed. The first shows the error, and Off is never reachable.

https://gh-file-drop-api-prod-galwoqjslzlnws6s.oliver-boorstein.workers.dev/f/ccde4af7a54eeb07/review-guides-before.mp4

After: the first save shows the error once and clears the mixed state (On, pinot labeled "Not supported"). The next click turns the setting off, with no error.

https://gh-file-drop-api-prod-galwoqjslzlnws6s.oliver-boorstein.workers.dev/f/132cb6072a87f2e2/review-guides-after.mp4

Screenshots

Before (#18334): the first click shows the error, then the switch stays mixed, so you can't reach Off.

Before: Review guides switch mixed after the error toast

After, server too old to send the list: the first click shows the same error once. The switch then shows On, which is the value on the environments that have the setting.

After: the switch shows On after the one error toast

After: the popover labels pinot "Not supported. Update T3 Code on this environment to use this setting."

The next click turns it off, with no error:

After: the second click turns Review guides off

After, server that sends the list: pinot is labeled before any click, and turning the setting on writes only to oliverpad, with no error.

After: before any click, the popover already labels pinot as not supported

Surfaces

  • Web and desktop settings: every server-scoped row goes through the same scope context, mixed check and write plan, so all of them get this, not only Review guides.
  • Server and contracts: one new optional capability. Older clients ignore it.
  • Mobile: doesn't use multi-environment settings rows, so no change.
  • Providers and MCP: not involved.

Validation

  • vp test run src/components/settings/ (606 tests). New cases cover the advertised list versus dropped keys, mixed state and displayed value, writes that skip unsupported environments (environment and project scope), the "Update T3 Code on …" message, and dropped keys reported from inside project overrides.
  • ServerEnvironment.test.ts checks that the descriptor sends settingsKeys.
  • Typecheck: web, server, contracts, client-runtime and mobile. Lint on the changed files.

Approvability

Verdict: Not approved

Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable — This PR changes the existing settings read, mixed-state, UI, and write paths across multiple environments, including capability negotiation and automatic suppression of writes to unsupported servers. The additive protocol field and tests reduce compatibility risk, but the cross-cutting runtime behavior and new write-gating logic warrant human review.

📝 Walkthrough

Servers advertise the settings they store. The web settings flow tracks unsupported keys, filters writes, detects dropped changes, and displays update notices.

Changes: Unsupported Settings

Layer / File(s) Summary
Advertise server setting keys
packages/contracts/src/environment.ts, apps/server/src/environment/ServerEnvironment.ts, apps/server/src/environment/ServerEnvironment.test.ts
Execution-environment capabilities include the server’s settings keys. The persisted-environment test checks that reviewGuidesEnabled is advertised.

The settings scope resolves unsupported keys from advertised capabilities or version-matched dropped-key state. Display values and mixed-state comparisons account for unsupported targets.
Filter and verify scoped writes
apps/web/src/components/settings/scopedSettings.ts, apps/web/src/components/settings/useScopedSettings.ts, apps/web/src/components/settings/scopedSettings.test.ts
Scoped writes omit unsupported keys and compare returned settings with requested patches. Dropped keys are reported and recorded with the environment’s server version.
Display unsupported-setting notices
apps/web/src/components/settings/settingsLayout.tsx, apps/web/src/components/settings/SettingInheritance.tsx
Settings rows identify unsupported targets and disable controls when all selected targets are unsupported. The inheritance popover shows an update notice for unsupported settings.

Gate the custom worktreeCleanup merge on the filtered patch.

Line 335 checks serverPatch.worktreeCleanup, but the loop iterates over supportedServerPatch(environment, serverPatch). The branch runs only when worktreeCleanup is in the filtered patch, so the current behavior is correct. The code still mixes two sources for the same decision. Read value instead so that the filter and the merge always agree.

The screenshots show the new states, but the key fix is the first save clearing the mixed state and the next click turning the setting off. Please add a short recording of that sequence with both environments selected, as required by the verification guide. I'm moving this to draft until that interaction is demonstrated; mark it ready again once the recording is attached.

Added before/after recordings to the description under Evidence → Recording. Both environments are selected and the row starts mixed (oliverpad on, pinot too old to have the setting). Before: two clicks leave it mixed. After: the first save shows the error once and clears the mixed state, and the next click turns the setting off.

The PR was not in draft, so it is still marked ready.

@coderabbitai Applied the worktreeCleanup nitpick in 76e4607: the project-override merge now reads the environment's filtered patch for both the custom-mode check and the rules.

@flamboh Thanks for the update. I verified 76e4607be1: the project-override merge uses environmentPatch.worktreeCleanup for both the custom-mode check and the rules. That addresses the nitpick.

Thanks for adding the before-and-after recordings with both environments selected.
