Problem

Claude Code can predict the user's next prompt after each turn (the Agent SDK's promptSuggestions option), but T3 Code never asks for it, so Claude users don't get the hint they have in the CLI. Requested in #9394 and #6839.

#8524 implemented this and was closed because it persisted suggestions as durable activities on the shared runtime channel, had mobile filter them out, and turned the option on for every Claude session without a toggle. The close note asked for "a smaller proposal using ephemeral state and an explicit user control". This is that version.

Change

  • Opt-in per Claude instance: Settings → Providers → Claude → Prompt suggestions, off by default. When it is on, the Claude adapter starts the CLI with promptSuggestions: true.

  • Ephemeral state: the latest suggestion per thread lives only in server memory (PromptSuggestions) and is streamed over one subscription (subscribePromptSuggestion). Nothing is persisted, the activity contract is unchanged, and mobile is untouched.

  • When it is cleared:

    • when the next turn starts
    • when a background wake starts
    • on rollback
    • when the session closes

A suggestion that arrives after any of these is dropped.

  • Web and desktop: the suggestion replaces the empty composer's placeholder, with a Right Arrow key hint. It shows only while the completed run it follows is still the latest. Right Arrow or Tab fills the draft and never sends, as in the Claude Code CLI; Esc hides it. Menus, Shift+Tab and IME keep their current behavior.

  • Docs: a short section in docs/user/providers-claude.md.

How this addresses the #8524 close note:

#8524 This PR
Durable prompt-suggestion activities Memory-only latest value per thread, cleared on the lifecycle points listed above
Synced to every client over the shared runtime channel; mobile filters them out Dedicated subscription that the web client opens only when the setting is on; mobile unchanged
promptSuggestions: true for all Claude sessions Off-by-default toggle per Claude instance

Behavior notes:

  • The setting applies to Claude processes started after the change, like the other Claude instance settings. Turning it off hides suggestions in the web client right away.
  • Picking a different provider instance in the composer hides the suggestion, and switching back shows it again.
  • A Tab pressed when no suggestion is showing still moves focus out of the composer, as it does on main. Right Arrow does nothing in an empty composer, so the hint teaches that key.
  • Mobile and older servers show nothing.

Scope and approval

There is no explicit maintainer approval yet. The proposal lives in #9394, which has a spec from @thedrowsywinger and a fork implementation by @tobymarks. This PR builds on that fork's UI: placeholder ghost text and the provider-settings toggle. It also follows the direction in the #8524 close note. If you'd rather settle the product behavior in the discussion first, or want a different shape, I'm happy to adjust or close this.

Verification

  • Adapter tests (ClaudeAdapterV2.test.ts):
    • publishes the suggestion with its run id and clears it when the next turn starts
    • drops a suggestion that arrives after the next turn started
    • clears it when a background wake starts and drops a later one
    • clears it on rollback (this test fails without the fix)
    • sets the SDK option only when the setting is on
  • Other tests: store tests (PromptSuggestions.test.ts), settings tests and contracts tests pass.
  • Typecheck passes for server, web, contracts, client-runtime and mobile.
  • Manual check in the web dev build with Claude Sonnet 5.5:
    • the toggle persists
    • ghost text appears after a turn
    • Right Arrow and Tab each fill the draft without sending
    • Right Arrow with no suggestion showing does nothing and keeps focus in the composer
    • clearing the draft brings the suggestion back
    • Esc hides it
    • Tab after dismissing moves focus as usual
  • Not checked:
    • the packaged Electron build separately; it shares the web composer
    • mobile, which has no changes
  • Usage-limit caveat: Claude stops suggesting when the account is close to its usage limit. Mine was, so I ran the manual check with CLAUDE_CODE_ENABLE_PROMPT_SUGGESTION=true.

🟡 Medium Adapters/ClaudeAdapterV2.ts:8071

Rolling back thread B clears the prompt suggestion for the session’s opening thread A and leaves B’s suggestion in PromptSuggestions; session close likewise clears only A, leaving suggestions published for other app threads resident and available to subscribers. Suggestions are keyed by settled.input.threadId, but these paths publish null only for sessionThreadId; clear the rollback target’s app thread and track and clear every thread key published by the session on close.

Fixed in 4d0dd43. One session can serve several app threads, so the adapter now records which app thread each native thread's suggestion was published for. A background wake and a rollback clear that thread's suggestion, and closing the session clears every one it published. Added a test that publishes under a second app thread and checks that the rollback clears it; it fails on the previous code.

Approvability

Verdict: Not approved

Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable — This is a new Claude capability spanning SDK/session lifecycle handling, ephemeral server state, an authenticated WebSocket RPC, and composer UI behavior rather than a small isolated change. It also introduces a defaulted product setting and has an unresolved medium-severity lifecycle-cleanup finding, so human review is warranted.

📝 Walkthrough

This change adds opt-in Claude prompt suggestions. The server publishes suggestions by thread and streams them through a WebSocket subscription. The chat view filters suggestions by run state, and the composer supports insertion and dismissal controls.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 3c74b

An opt-in Claude suggestion may appear after a background wake when it should be discarded. The issue is narrow, but it should be fixed or explicitly accepted before merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 3c74b

The feature defaults off, requires authenticated read access, and inserts suggestions into a draft rather than sending them. No new access-control bypass was established. Concurrent publication and session cleanup remain incompletely verified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — An authenticated connection holding orchestration:read can request any thread ID and receive its current process-local suggestion. The handler and store apply no additional principal or per-thread ownership check. This uses the pre-existing environment read authority rather than introducing a narrower resource authorization model.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The inspected provider-text path does not establish automatic agent execution or script injection: suggestion display uses text rendering, and acceptance only changes a draft. A separate send action remains necessary. This conclusion is limited to the inspected suggestion handling path.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The WebSocket upgrade authenticates the session, RPC middleware checks its scopes before handler execution, and session invalidation races the connection effect to terminate active access. The new subscription inherits these controls.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Each subscriber has a one-slot sliding output mailbox, thread filtering, and a scoped forwarding fiber. The internal change bus is unbounded, so the output mailbox limit does not by itself prove a total buffering bound.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Consider binding publication and clearing to a session/run generation, with atomic rejection of stale mutations. Validate replacement-session teardown, rollback, and interruption interleavings before relying on strict post-invalidation deletion. This addresses an unresolved lifecycle guarantee, not a verified security finding.

@coderabbitai Nitpick on PromptSuggestions.ts (standalone PromptSuggestionsShape): fixed in 98e0eaf. The interface now lives inline in the Context.Reference, and callers use typeof PromptSuggestions.Service. Because this is a Context.Reference, the service type sits on the static key, so it is typeof PromptSuggestions.Service rather than PromptSuggestions["Service"].

@danielyc Verified the inline service type in apps/server/src/provider/PromptSuggestions.ts. The implementation now uses typeof PromptSuggestions.Service, and the server search found no remaining PromptSuggestionsShape references.

Thanks for clarifying the static service-type access for Context.Reference. This addresses the nitpick.

Learning: In apps/server/src/provider/PromptSuggestions.ts, PromptSuggestions extends Effect's Context.Reference with an inline service type. Access that service type with typeof PromptSuggestions.Service, not PromptSuggestions["Service"], because Context.Reference exposes Service on the static key. Use this type for caller annotations instead of a standalone PromptSuggestionsShape interface.

Claude Code can predict the user's next prompt after each turn
(`promptSuggestions` in the Agent SDK). Offer it as ghost text in the
empty composer: Tab fills the draft without sending, Esc hides it.

Opt-in per Claude provider instance (Settings > Providers > Claude >
Prompt suggestions, off by default). The suggestion lives only in server
memory and streams over a dedicated subscription; it is never persisted,
added to the activity contract, or sent to mobile. It is cleared when the
next turn starts, on a background wake, on rollback, and when the session
closes, and the web client shows it only while the completed run it
follows is still the latest.

One Claude session can serve several app threads, but a background wake,
a rollback and closing the session cleared only the thread the session
opened with. Track which app thread each native thread's suggestion was
published for and clear that one.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Follow the service-module rule: no standalone shape interface.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The suggestion belongs to the Claude instance that produced it, so picking
a different provider in the composer hides it; switching back shows it
again.

Thanks for picking this up and for the credit. The extra clears on rollback and background wake go further than my fork did.

One behavior I'd reconsider, from using my fork daily on macOS desktop: a Tab that arrives when no suggestion is showing.

  • The hint teaches "press Tab", so I press it by reflex.
  • If the suggestion disappeared just before the key lands (dismissed with Esc, or cleared because a turn started), the key falls through to the browser. Focus then leaves the composer, and the next keystrokes go somewhere else.
  • Your verification notes list this as intended ("Tab after dismissing moves focus as usual"). In practice it felt like the composer losing focus at random, which is the symptom in macOS composer stops accepting typing until clicked again #14478.

In my fork I handle it like this: once a thread has shown a suggestion, a plain Tab in the empty composer is swallowed instead of moving focus. Commit: tobymarks/t3code@d0e44e7. Feel free to take it or solve it differently.

I'm happy to test the branch on macOS desktop (packaged build, Claude provider) if that helps.

A Tab that lands when no suggestion is showing moves focus out of the
composer, because the browser handles it. Right Arrow does nothing in an
empty composer, so it cannot miss that way. The hint now shows Right
Arrow, and Tab keeps working for a visible suggestion, as in the Claude
Code CLI.

Thanks for the report, and for the offer to test.

I went with a different fix than the sticky swallow, in 8731aea: Right Arrow now also accepts the suggestion, and the hint shows → instead of Tab. Tab still accepts a visible suggestion.

Right Arrow does nothing in an empty composer, so pressing it just after the suggestion vanished can't move focus. The Claude Code CLI also accepts with "Tab or Right arrow".

What this doesn't fix: a reflex Tab that lands with no suggestion showing still moves focus, as it does on main. I didn't swallow Tab because the empty composer would lose its forward Tab exit once a thread has shown a suggestion. That would also hold after the setting is turned off or another provider is picked, and with the legacy plan mode flag on, Shift+Tab is taken as well.

If the stray Tab keeps biting, I think the better follow-up is separate from this PR: let typing on a composer footer button return to the composer, since type-to-focus skips buttons today.

I have since checked Right Arrow in the web dev build; a check on the macOS desktop build would still help.

With Prompt suggestions turned on for Claude, the suggestion shows up in the empty composer after a turn in a new thread. Before this it had only been checked in the web dev build.

The branch is also up to date with main again. The merge had one conflict in ClaudeAdapterV2.ts, where both additions to the wake path are kept.

Thanks for proposing Claude prompt suggestions. This adds a provider setting, a subscription, and composer interactions rather than repairing an existing defect, and the description states there is no explicit maintainer approval. Our prior approval rule requires agreement on feature direction and scope before implementation. Please bring this proposal to an Ideas discussion and link explicit approval when requesting reconsideration.
