Grok billing periods disappear when a successful response omits creditUsagePercent. Infer zero only when the response contains a complete, ordered weekly or monthly period with valid timestamps. Incomplete, unsupported and invalid periods continue to report no limits. Explicit percentages retain their existing clamping and reset behavior, including when the newly read start field is malformed.

Maintainer takeover of #17061, credit to @jieyuexing. Contributor commits are retained and main was merged. The original date normalization bug is fixed at both boundaries; the tests use the existing server Grok suite and include a real HTTP-decoding regression.

Human product decision remains required: the existing maintainer comment asks whether an omitted percentage should mean zero for a complete period. This changes the unknown-usage behavior retained in #12799; the discussion in #15878 has no linked approval. Preparing this change does not settle that decision.

Verification on head 589065fc7c (headless Linux, Node 24):

  • Original one-case test replaced with four focused cases in the existing server Grok suite: valid weekly/monthly inference; incomplete/invalid/unknown periods; impossible calendar dates at either boundary; HTTP decoding with malformed starts. Duplicate explicit-percentage assertions were removed because the existing suite already covers them. The package's 10 log-parser tests are unchanged.
  • Server Grok suite: 37 passed; package usage suite: 10 passed. Main fails the missing-percentage regression; the original PoC fails the impossible-date regression. R1 found a decoding regression with start: null or a number; its new HTTP-level test failed before the fix and now passes.
  • Server and provider-grok typechecks, scoped lint, formatting and diff checks pass. Two independent full-PR review rounds completed; R1 decoding and duplicate-test findings were addressed, and R2 Claude Opus 5.5 plus GPT-6 Sol found no code blockers. The product decision above remains open.
  • Actual Usage page, same 1280×800 viewport and two isolated billing fixtures: main shows “No limits reported”; head shows Weekly and Monthly windows with 100% remaining. Temporary server status instrumentation supplies fixture payloads to the actual main/head parser, then uses the normal server-to-web path. It bypasses CLI/account discovery; no billing request or provider turn was made. Instrumentation was removed byte-for-byte afterward.

Before — main:

Before: Grok weekly and monthly fixtures report no limits

After — this head:

After: zero-use weekly and monthly periods show 100 percent remaining

Current-head CI jobs that ran passed; other jobs were skipped normally. The calendar-validation review thread is resolved; explicit human approval of the zero-versus-unknown product decision is still required.

A real Grok account and production billing endpoint were not exercised. macOS, Windows, iOS, Android, and Electron desktop remain unverified. This PR is unmerged.

Implemented with Codex GPT-6.1 Sol in T3 Code; tests by GPT-6 Astra, independent reviews by Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6 Sol.

Approvability

Verdict: Not approved

Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable — This focused change improves Grok's user-visible billing-period usage reporting and includes targeted regression coverage. Because it changes billing/metering interpretation on a production provider path, human review is required.

📝 Walkthrough

The Grok usage limits parser now infers 0% usage when the percentage is omitted and the response contains a complete, valid weekly or monthly period. Tests cover qualifying periods and cases that produce no windows.

Changes: Grok usage limits

Parse missing usage percentages
packages/provider-grok/src/server/usageLimits.ts, packages/provider-grok/src/server/usage.test.ts
The response accepts a period start timestamp. The parser infers 0% usage only for weekly or monthly periods with valid, ordered start and end timestamps. Tests cover valid periods and invalid or unsupported cases.

The change is mergeable with owner awareness, but a malformed Grok period could appear as a valid zero-use period. Validate calendar dates before inferring usage.

Explanation

The description clearly covers the problem, implementation, scope, verification results, limitations, and test evidence. However, the required scope approval is not complete because the description states that the maintainer decision remains open and provides no explicit approval for the zero-versus-unknown behavior change.

Resolution

Obtain and link explicit maintainer approval for treating an omitted creditUsagePercent as 0% for complete weekly or monthly periods, or document a valid approval exemption under the repository requirements.

A maintainer decision is needed on the missing-percentage interpretation. #12799 deliberately kept a successful response with no creditUsagePercent as “No limits reported.” The discussion in #15878 asks whether that should instead mean 0%, and has no maintainer answer yet. This PR's complete-period guard narrows that choice but still changes it.

Can a maintainer confirm that complete weekly/monthly periods with an omitted percentage should display 0%, or should the current unknown-usage behavior remain? Please link that decision here before review handoff, per problem and scope approval.

Drafted by Codex (gpt-6.1-sol) and Claude Opus 5.5 in T3 Code; reviewed and posted by @jieyuexing

Rebased onto current main (eeaac49) and squashed into one commit (f18a6d1). #17357 moved the Grok usage code, so the change now lives in packages/provider-grok/src/server/usageLimits.ts and its test in that package's usage.test.ts. Behavior is unchanged: an omitted creditUsagePercent reads as 0% only for a complete weekly or monthly period; anything else still reports no limits.

This keeps the PR mergeable; it doesn't settle the 0%-versus-unknown question above, which still needs a maintainer decision.

Taking over this one. I'll adapt the parser to main, address impossible calendar dates, and push the focused, reviewed result. The existing product decision about omitted percentages remains an explicit human gate.
