fix(clients): recognize line ranges in file chips - #16990
Backticked references such as src/main.ts:49-74 stayed plain code, and absolute references could keep the range attached to the filename. Shared parsing now recognizes colon line ranges. Web and mobile preserve the range in chip labels, copying, and thread search; opening uses the start line. Differing authored labels remain visible. On mobile this also preserves prose labels such as [see here](src/a.ts), matching web behavior. Native mobile recognition uses the shared classifier, and downloads receive the bare file path.
Based on @ethanblake4's work in #16990. Contributor commits are preserved with current main merged. Adapted the mobile implementation to the current enriched Markdown renderer and removed coverage for the renderer deleted on main.
Post-integration validation: 371 unit cases in 12 suites and 83 browser cases in the two affected suites pass, including main’s repo-prefix lookup cases. Web types, resolution-file lint and formatting pass. The full feature delta is unchanged across all 16 files after the history-preserving merge of f0fb0e8525. The Linux app was rechecked on b6111458c3: both range forms render as chips, the authored label stays visible, and the file opens with line 49 selected.
Final integration review: Opus and Sol reviewed the complete PR against current main. Opus found one low-severity mobile recognition regression after escaped or fenced stray backticks. The candidate collector now leaves Markdown span selection to the native parser; four assertions in the existing test failed before the fix. All 41 focused mobile cases, mobile types, targeted compiler coverage, lint and formatting pass on c4cce44c34. This mobile-only follow-up leaves the integrated web proof below unchanged. No new test definitions or further review round were added.
Original takeover validation: 337 tests across 10 focused suites plus all 8 browser permission tests pass. Scoped shared, web, and mobile typechecks, targeted lint/formatting, and diff checks pass. The PR's 31 added cases across seven files were reduced to 14 focused cases across seven existing test files, including the current mobile copy/download path. Substituting main's parsers produces six expected regression failures.
Live Linux web proof uses an isolated synthetic conversation and generated 100-line file, with no provider run started. Before uses main's two shared parser modules; after uses the rebuilt head. Relative and absolute range references become chips, the authored label stays visible, and clicking the range opens src/main.ts with line 49 highlighted.
Not verified live: macOS, Windows, iOS, Android, Electron desktop, remote/relay/tunnel connections, native clipboard, and external editor integration. Browser tests verify the editor target and copy commands; platform behavior still needs native verification. This change does not add range highlighting or GitHub range-anchor syntax.

Shared file-link utilities now parse and format line ranges. Web and mobile Markdown flows preserve range metadata in labels, copied paths, and file presentations. Editor opening uses the range’s start line.
Changes: Markdown Line Ranges
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Parse and recognize line ranges packages/shared/src/fileLinks.ts, packages/shared/src/markdownLinks.ts, packages/shared/src/markdownLinks.test.ts, packages/shared/src/threadFindText.test.ts
Shared utilities parse and format :start-end positions. Link recognition checks end lines, and file-link labels and search chips display ranges.
Recognize and present ranged mobile links apps/mobile/src/lib/markdownDocument.ts, apps/mobile/src/lib/markdownLinks.ts, apps/mobile/src/lib/enrichedLinkPresentation.ts, apps/mobile/src/native/EnrichedMarkdownText.tsx, apps/mobile/src/native/useEnrichedLinkVariants.ts, apps/mobile/src/lib/*test.ts
Mobile Markdown conversion uses shared file-link parsing. File presentations include end lines and derive icons from parsed paths. Presentations preserve authored labels when they differ from standard file-link labels.
Preserve positions in mobile file chips apps/mobile/src/features/threads/fileChipMenu.ts, apps/mobile/src/features/threads/fileChipMenu.test.ts
Resolved file-chip paths retain position suffixes. File metadata uses the path without the suffix, and share resources omit the range.
Display and open ranged links apps/web/src/markdown-links.ts, apps/web/src/markdown-links.test.ts, apps/web/src/components/ChatMarkdown.tsx, apps/web/src/components/ChatMarkdown.permissions.browser.test.tsx, apps/web/src/markdownFileHostPath.ts
Web metadata and labels include the end line. Editor opening uses the range’s start line. Copy actions retain the full range.
The range-link behavior has no established production issue, but the browser tests should acquire their clipboard spies after rendering. This is a bounded issue that does not block merging.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to c4cce
The change is narrow, and existing file-link classification and permission checks remain in place. No new access or privilege was identified in the reviewed flows. Cross-client native behavior remains supported by source inspection rather than live platform validation.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — Markdown authors gain additional range-bearing references that reach existing file actions. In the inspected consumers, environment and thread identity come from application context, not the new position field. Absolute-path handling predates this PR; the change does not establish broader filesystem authorization.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — The reviewed source-to-action paths do not establish an introduced authorization bypass or regex-injection path. Native recognition admits only classifier-approved file candidates, and downstream mobile callbacks reclassify hrefs before file navigation.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The generated native patterns escape and anchor each candidate. Although candidate collection splits the markdown text on backticks, the bundled native implementation applies recognition to parsed inline-code nodes and requires a whole-span match; fenced code blocks are not converted through this path.
observed — Web editor and reveal callbacks remain gated by the current environment's host-operation permission and remote-open resolution. Integrated-browser callbacks retain preview permission checks. The changed editor handler transforms position metadata without changing callback authority.

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a focused cross-client bug fix that extends existing file-chip parsing to line ranges while preserving established opening, copying, download, and label behavior. The change adds only a small position field and targeted coverage, with no product-default, schema, deployment, security, or static-analysis configuration changes.

Taking over this one as maintainer for batch misc-02. I will preserve your commits, merge current main, reduce the tests to focused behavior coverage, and rebuild against current web and mobile paths. Thanks for the range parsing work and Windows reproduction.
thanks @ethanblake4. your shared range parsing, full-range labels/copy/search, authored-label handling, and start-line opening are preserved, along with your commits.
merged current main without rebasing. adapted file actions to the extracted web helper and mobile’s current markdown conversion. removed the duplicate mobile file regex so /repo/src/main.ts:49-74 and Makefile:49-74 work too. downloads use the bare path. no new test files.
verification: vp run check:changed through blacksmith passes 150 tests across 10 files, 29 affected package typechecks, format, lint, and both knip checks. the range regressions and three mobile discovery cases failed before their fixes. two independent final code reviews found no issues on edf1b63b32a0e8c1d0dcd4aba8f3129b58130e87.
head checks: 9 successful, 0 failed. coderabbit remains pending behind its organization review quota; macroscope approved this head.
real linux chrome: matching stopped conversation data before/after; relative and absolute ranges become chips, the differing authored label remains visible, and clicking opens the actual file with line 49 selected. before uses main cc0b86ddf1 web/shared code. no live provider run was used. uploaded recording playback and seeking were checked.
unverified: native ios/android, electron, macos/windows, external editor and os clipboard integration, remote/relay/tunnel, and full-repo suites/builds.

Acquire the clipboard spies after rendering.
setup() creates the clipboard spies before renderMarkdown(), but both copying tests drive them after mounting. Keep mock-state initialization in setup(), and acquire the spies after rendering in both tests.
