Problem

Server browser tabs could render light despite the existing default appearance setting. Playwright's initial CDP attachment forced light, and the applied-state sentinel prevented the first System reset.

Change

Pass the existing default appearance through server-tab opens, persist the optional preference, clear the initial media override for System, and carry the opener preference into server-adopted popups. Keep the existing equality check to avoid redundant media updates.

Rebuilt on main 806b53994568e4d575830149d1b964afad169e5c, preserving @ilyaliao's original commits and intent from #16983. Removed two callback-payload tests and retained two focused server behavior tests.

Scope and approval

This aligns server tabs with the existing setting; no new setting or provider behavior. System follows the desktop app theme for desktop-rendered tabs. Headless System remains light; agent-opened tabs cannot inherit a client-local default. Native Electron popups and server-adopted popups are distinct paths. Existing System help text and popup navigation-status handling are separate concerns. No merge or auto-merge is requested.

Verification

  • 78 focused server tests and 10 existing web opener tests passed; contracts/server/web typechecks and targeted lint/format passed. Controlled red probes cover initial System reset, duplicate-update avoidance, Manager propagation and popup inheritance.
  • Actual isolated Linux Electron 44.4.5 at 2cd6ec0a55cd955cdd8a272199d54a396c11dd4e: default Dark reproduced light on the pinned base and dark after the change, after real desktop/server attachment. Fresh System under app Dark and fresh Light passed. A System tab followed Dark → Light → Dark with real stream frames.
  • A real native popup rendered dark. Separately, one trusted button activation in the production server-only browser created a popup with inherited Dark, dark decoded frames and the correct opener relationship. Its existing Idle navigation snapshot left the client empty-state overlay visible; this proves inherited media and delivery, not correct visible popup presentation or zero initial flash. Source comparison places that status gap in the shared base/head path.
  • No macOS or Windows execution claim. No real provider turn. Initial protocol logging was truncated; actual frame and media observations are the proof.
Before: default Dark After: default Dark
Pinned base renders light after attachment Reviewed head renders dark after attachment

Model and harness: Claude Opus 5.5 tests and review, Claude Fable 5.1 implementation, GPT-6.1 Sol independent review and isolated runtime proof through T3 Code; standard service tiers.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This PR changes newly opened server browser tabs to use the configured default appearance and propagates that choice through popup tabs. The implementation is focused and backward-compatible, but the effective product default behavior changes and therefore warrants human review.

📝 Walkthrough

Preview inputs now carry the configured color scheme for supported runtimes. Server tabs retain supplied schemes, start with no applied scheme, and pass non-null schemes to popups.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 42f62

Server previews may appear light when a user’s System appearance is dark, but the previews remain usable. Appearance synchronization remains a bounded follow-up.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 42f62

The new input is limited to appearance preferences, with no demonstrated expansion of access or privileges. A conditional startup cleanup gap remains unverified, so the assessment is low risk rather than fully cleared.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated new caller-controlled effect is page appearance on the opened preview tab and inherited appearance on its popups. The inspected changes do not add credentials, network destinations, profile authority, or automation privileges.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Appearance uses a three-value schema and reaches page.emulateMedia rather than an executable-code or identity-selection sink. Popup adoption retains its existing closing-state and agent-tab-limit checks and does not derive ownership from the new preference.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Consider transactional ownership transfer during tab creation, with explicit cleanup or recoverable adoption when setup fails before registration. This would strengthen the pre-existing failure-containment boundary; it is not evidence of an exploitable regression.

Explanation

The changes address the coding requirements in #17732. PreviewOpenInput.colorScheme carries the appearance into server-tab snapshots. The server-tab open paths pass defaults.appearance for new tabs. ServerTab.colorScheme starts as null, so the first System render calls emulateMedia({ colorScheme: null }) and clears Playwright's light override. The added tests cover Dark and System behavior. The reported desktop verification confirms that System follows app-theme changes.

No unrelated feature, setting, or behavior is identified. The documented headless-server and agent-open limitations are scope limits, not unrelated changes.

Confirming this on Windows 11 with the OS in dark mode (AppsUseLightTheme = 0). Browser tabs report prefers-color-scheme: light until Appearance is switched away from System and back, the same symptom as #17732.

I traced it on my own before finding this PR and ended up with the same server change. When Playwright attaches through connectOverCDP, it sends Emulation.setEmulatedMedia with colorScheme: "light", because the context has no colorScheme set. ServerTab.colorScheme started out as "system", so the first applyRendering thought there was nothing to clear and the light override stayed.

I also reproduced it outside T3 on the same machine. Chromium in new-headless mode reports matchMedia('(prefers-color-scheme: dark)').matches === false after Playwright attaches, and true after page.emulateMedia({ colorScheme: null }). chrome-headless-shell reports light both ways, which matches the headless limitation in the description.

One thing that needs a maintainer's call: with this change, a "System" tab follows T3 Code's app theme, not the OS, because desktop sets nativeTheme.themeSource from the app theme. Someone running T3 in Light on a dark OS will get light pages under "System". The description says this is intended, and I think that's reasonable. But a normal browser's "System" follows the OS, so the setting's label or help text should say what it follows.

What I didn't test: live OS theme switching in the packaged Windows desktop app.

@coderabbitai The suggestion to resolve system to light/dark on the client is incorrect. If we change it that way:

Before After
before after

Steps: default browser appearance is System, open a browser tab while the app is dark, then switch the app to light. With the suggestion applied, the tab is stored as dark instead of system, so it stays dark and no longer follows the theme.

@ilyaliao You’re right. My suggestion was incorrect, and I withdraw it.

Resolving system to light or dark when opening a tab turns a dynamic preference into a fixed override. The tab must retain system so it can follow later app theme changes. Clearing Playwright’s override with emulateMedia({ colorScheme: null }) preserves that behavior.

Thanks for the correction and reproduction.

Learning: In t3code, preserve the `system` browser appearance preference when opening server tabs. Do not resolve it to `light` or `dark` on the client and store that resolved value: doing so prevents existing System tabs from following later app theme changes. Desktop System tabs intentionally follow the app theme. In apps/server/src/preview/ServerBrowser.ts, applying System appearance clears Playwright’s color-scheme override with emulateMedia({ colorScheme: null }).

Taking over this one. I’ll reduce the tests to the useful coverage, update the implementation against current main, and verify it before publishing the changes.

Replaces the original ServerBrowser case with two behavioral tests: a desktop-rendered
system tab clears Playwright's forced light exactly once, and a tab opened dark hands
that appearance to its popups. The two openPreviewSession tests only asserted mocked
callback payloads and are removed.

Thanks @ilyaliao — your PR identified the missing opening appearance seed and Playwright's initial System-reset issue. Replaced by #24658 on origin, as required for this fork takeover. I compared the full original diff with the replacement: the optional contract field, Manager propagation, initial null sentinel, all three web openers, and popup inheritance are retained. Tests were rebuilt to prove Light/Dark/System and the opening paths; final integration has 39 passing focused tests, two independent MERGE reviews, and an audited evidence matrix. No intended implementation piece was omitted. The new PR preserves your description, credits this work, and records the remaining native-popup/linked-environment limits. No merge was performed.
