Electron’s native Linux relaunch sets no_new_privs on the replacement process. The flag is inherited and cannot be cleared, so a later .deb update cannot gain privileges through pkexec.

Linux relaunch now uses a detached shell that waits for the old app’s stdin pipe to close, then execs the replacement with literal executable and argument values. Other platforms keep Electron’s native relaunch. A .deb update disables the updater’s native run-after-install and queues this launcher only after installation succeeds.

This also carries the required install-error integration: electron-updater 6.8.9 emits synchronous installer errors and returns normally. The adapter captures those errors around quitAndInstall, translates them to the existing typed failure, and removes its temporary listener. Failed or cancelled installs recover the stopped backend and update state without leaving a restart queued.

Maintainer takeover of #15387, preserving @TonybynMp4’s commits and credit. Main was merged; the prerequisite error handling is integrated here so this change is independently reviewable.

Verification on headless Linux:

  • Original five focused suites: 61 passed. Revised suites: 63 passed, including two regressions that first failed on the original implementation. The notification-badge wiring suite adds 9 passed, for 72 passing tests across six files.
  • A real Linux parent/service/spawner/shell/replacement test proves the detached launcher survives service-scope closure, waits for parent exit, preserves literal executable and argument boundaries, and leaves /proc/self/status NoNewPrivs at 0 in both parent and replacement.
  • The installed electron-updater 6.8.9 BaseUpdater/DebUpdater install and event path proves success queues one custom restart with [silent=true, forceRunAfter=false]. The real dependency failure path, shared with authentication cancellation, queues no restart, recovers one backend, clears restart/install records, and retains the install-error state. OS package commands and Electron app boundaries are substituted; no privileged command runs.
  • Mutations disabling the Linux launcher, restoring the native .deb run-after-install, and removing the EOF wait all fail their regression assertions; production was restored afterward.
  • Scoped lint, formatting, desktop typecheck, and git diff --check pass. Tests use a command-local ELECTRON_OVERRIDE_DIST_PATH only to import Electron without a downloaded binary.
  • Independent Opus 5.5 and GPT-6-Sol full-diff review: three rounds completed with no confirmed production bugs; duplicate coverage, a root-sensitive assertion, and an unused stub branch were removed. The final round returned no source findings.

No packaged Electron application, real privileged .deb update, graphical authentication cancellation, AppImage update, macOS/Windows device, iOS, or Android client was exercised. The process proof uses Node stand-ins and the actual launcher, not an Electron package. A human still needs to verify two consecutive packaged .deb updates and a cancelled authentication prompt. Existing Linux .deb users whose running app already has NoNewPrivs: 1 must fully quit and reopen T3 Code manually once before installing this update; the running process cannot clear the inherited flag. After installing the fix from an unrestricted process, later in-app restarts use the new launcher. If spawning fails, the existing native relaunch fallback retains Electron’s limitation. There is no UI layout change and no screenshot can prove the process flag. Nothing was merged.

Models: GPT-6-Astra (tests), GPT-6.1-Sol (implementation/integration), Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6-Sol (adversarial reviews), through T3 Code’s Codex/Claude harnesses.

Approvability

Verdict: Not approved

Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable — This PR changes the production Linux update and relaunch path by adding a detached launcher, altering .deb installation restart behavior, and changing updater error handling around privileged installs. An unresolved high-severity finding identifies a PID-reuse case that can prevent the application from restarting, so the lifecycle and privilege-sensitive behavior require human review.

Walkthrough

The desktop app now has a Linux-specific relaunch path. ElectronUpdater captures errors emitted during installation calls. Update installation behavior and failure logs include package-specific handling and bounded diagnostic details.

Changes: Desktop updater and relaunch handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Platform-specific Electron relaunch
apps/desktop/src/electron/ElectronApp.ts, apps/desktop/src/electron/ElectronApp.test.ts, apps/desktop/src/main.ts, apps/desktop/src/ipc/methods/notificationBadge.test.ts, apps/desktop/src/backend/DesktopBackendPool.test.ts
ElectronApp.make now uses host platform and child-process services. On Linux, relaunch waits for the current process to exit before executing the relaunch command. Other platforms use app.relaunch(). Runtime wiring and tests provide the required services and cover both paths.
Updater installation error capture
apps/desktop/src/electron/ElectronUpdater.ts, apps/desktop/src/electron/ElectronUpdater.test.ts
quitAndInstall captures synchronous error events and returns the first captured error. Registered error listeners suppress those captured object errors and forward other errors. Tests check error forwarding and listener cleanup.
Update installation and failure reporting
apps/desktop/src/updates/DesktopUpdates.ts, apps/desktop/src/updates/DesktopUpdates.test.ts, apps/desktop/src/updates/updatesTestHarness.ts
Update logs include bounded cause details. Linux .deb installs disable forced restart and then call ElectronApp.relaunch; other packages retain forced restart. Tests and the harness cover relaunch steps and install failure details, including NoNewPrivs cases.

Merge Risk: Low · previous review 0b997

The current restart order is correct, so this is mergeable with a bounded test improvement: assert the order to protect future Debian updates.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to 0b997

The change preserves existing restrictions on restart inputs and improves installation-failure handling. No new attack path was established, but production shutdown timing and degraded restart behavior remain incompletely verified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated changed authority is local to Linux desktop restart and subsequent package installation on that host. The inspected callers provide no new route for renderer-selected executables, arguments, tenants, or remote destinations. The external privileged installer chain was not verified.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The shell script is fixed, and executable arguments are passed separately through exec "$@", avoiding shell interpolation. Update IPC retains its parameterless install contract. The inspected IPC registration forwards events without a sender-identity check; those unchanged files do not establish the complete renderer-origin policy.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Synchronous installer-error capture improves failure containment by preventing the new relaunch step from following an emitted installation failure. Temporary listener cleanup is explicit, and the existing recovery path restores application state rather than claiming installation success.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Validate the handoff in a packaged Linux application, including actual updater quit timing, detached-process survival, inherited no_new_privs state, and spawn-failure fallback. Make fallback degradation observable so a manual restart can restore update capability when necessary.

Assert install-before-relaunch order.

The current .deb implementation calls quitAndInstall(no-run) before relaunch, but these membership checks do not enforce that order. A reversed sequence would still pass.

Taking over this one as maintainer for batch desktop-app-08. I will retain author credit, reconcile with main, verify the detached Linux restart path, and integrate install-error handling so a failed .deb install cannot leave a relaunch queued. No merge is planned.

app.relaunch() starts the new instance with PR_SET_NO_NEW_PRIVS set
(electron/electron#41463). The flag can't be cleared, so pkexec fails and
every later .deb update from that instance fails too.

On Linux, ElectronApp.relaunch now spawns a detached /bin/sh that waits for
this process to exit and then execs the app, which leaves the flag unset.
The .deb update path passes isForceRunAfter: false to electron-updater and
relaunches through ElectronApp instead.
