Model and provider switches can leave a conversation too full for the next request. This PR compacts the existing conversation, then retries the same request and attachments once.

The saved chat stays intact. Stop cancels the retry, and recovery stops if the agent has already produced output or started work. With restart continuation enabled, the waiting request survives a restart. Web, desktop, and mobile show when automatic compaction is running.

Verification: 866 automated tests, type checks, lint, and formatting passed. Provider tests used fake transports. Live web and native mobile checks could not run on this host.

Limits: compaction summarizes the model's active context. The full saved chat remains available in T3.

Maintainer approval of the direction and scope is still pending. See Julius's earlier request.

Original implementation: GPT-6 Astra / Codex. Updates and review: GPT-6.1 Sol High / Codex.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The change adds provider context-window recovery through native compaction and a retry. It records compaction on run attempts, prepares budgeted handoffs, handles interruption and restart continuation, and exposes active compaction state in web and mobile clients.

Changes

Context-window recovery

Layer / File(s) Summary
Represent and detect compaction
packages/contracts/src/orchestrationV2.ts, packages/client-runtime/src/state/threadExecution.ts, packages/client-runtime/src/state/threadExecution.test.ts, apps/mobile/src/state/use-thread-composer-state.ts, apps/web/src/components/ChatView.tsx
Run attempts now support an optional contextCompaction field. Client state derives compaction from the active attempt, and web and mobile views use that state.
Classify failures and prepare handoffs
apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/ProviderFailure.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/ProviderFailure.test.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/ContextHandoffDelivery.ts
Context-window failures are classified and normalized. Handoff preparation calculates budgeted history and returns prepared handoffs or a budget error.
Preflight startup and resume compaction
apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/ProviderTurnStartService.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/RestartContinuation.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/RestartContinuation.test.ts
Startup preflights handoff budgets and can select compaction. Restart continuation detects pending compaction and uses the source request and its attachments and context where available.
Retry and finalize attempts
apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/RunExecutionService.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/EventSink.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/FoundationPersistence.test.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/Orchestrator.ts
Finalization can schedule a context-recovery attempt and derive persisted state from the effective terminal outcome. Guarded writes account for unpaired interrupts, and steering is rejected during compaction.
Exercise provider recovery
apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/testkit/ProviderReplayHarness.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/testkit/ProviderSwitch.integration.test.ts, docs/user/portable-handoffs.md
Provider-switch tests cover context rejection, compaction outcomes, interruption, and restart recovery. The replay harness supports response streaming modes, and the documentation describes recovery behavior.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 3ae2a

This review covers only a documentation update about portable handoffs, and no concrete problem was found in it. Maintainer approval of the overall direction is still pending, but that is a process matter and not a code risk.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to ed7d5

Automatic compaction adds a restartable retry path for saved requests. The reviewed controls preserve conversation identity, block retries after observed work, and check Stop when committing retries. No concrete security defect was established, but provider crash recovery and deployment compatibility were not fully verified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The reviewed execution scope is the selected conversation and its attached provider instance, session, native thread, and runtime policy. Restart recovery requires matching ownership identities; these checks bound the inspected path but do not establish tenant-wide or deployment-wide security coverage.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Stop authority is checked again inside the retry commit transaction. An interrupt request without its corresponding result rejects the transition before events or provider-start effects are committed; completed Stop pairs do not trigger that rejection.
  • observed — Restart continuation rejects archived or deleted conversations and incompatible provider ownership. It also declines automatic dispatch after newer non-queued work, an explicit interrupt request, or an already-recorded continuation message.
  • observed — The routed provider-switch helper is local integration-test code using an injected adapter. Its static public-entrypoint classification does not establish a newly exposed production API.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Recorded provider work and any previous compaction attempt disable another context-failure retry. Together with current-attempt fencing and transactional effect enqueueing, these controls constrain replay and partially committed recovery within the inspected persisted lifecycle.

Approvability

Verdict: Not approved

Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable — This PR introduces automatic native compaction and request retries across provider orchestration, persistence, restart recovery, and client state, changing existing production behavior with meaningful side effects. Its scope and complexity exceed a self-contained fix, and the new recovery path is enabled by default when context exhaustion occurs.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Keep compaction attempts eligible for restart continuation.

When the server restarts during a compaction attempt, this guard prevents recovery from enqueueing provider-runtime.continue. Startup recovery cancels the source run, its active attempt, and its provider turn. With continueThreadsAfterServerUpdate enabled, the original request is cancelled without a continuation run.

Addressed the outside-diff RestartContinuation finding from #15213 (review) in 6b98683. The selector no longer excludes an unfinished root solely because its active attempt is automatic compaction. It still requires matching live native state. Tests cover compaction eligibility and startup continuation enabled/disabled; the existing settled-run, Stop, native maintenance-command, duplicate, and newer-work guards remain. All 187 focused tests across five files, server type checks, and targeted lint/format checks pass. The conflict alert was for an older head: the branch already contains main at 4ee6bfd. The description now includes the fix and links Julius's still-open request for scope approval.

Follow-up to the outside-diff restart finding: fixed the remaining request-delivery gaps in cca73ca and ed7d59f, on top of 6b98683. Opt-in restart recovery keeps the waiting request text, attachments, composer context, and model selection, including repeat restarts and the gaps before and after native compaction. Codex receives the saved request as a prompt rather than an empty native continuation. Stop and the restart setting still block recovery.

Also verified the architecture concern in the review summary: a failed native resume after successful compaction could create a replacement conversation. ed7d59f now fails safely throughout that recovery chain. The regression test reproduced the old behavior. Saved chat remains intact, and ordinary provider-switch fallback still passes. 157 focused tests, server type checks, and changed-file lint pass.

The description now includes Scope and approval and retains the prior request from Julius; maintainer approval is still pending. The docstring-coverage warning is non-blocking and does not identify a runtime defect. No coverage-only docstrings were added, consistent with the project instructions. Fresh CI and bot review are pending on ed7d59f.

Thanks for this. I'm closing it as part of PR triage. Right now we're only taking focused bug fixes from outside contributors (see Read this first), and this PR is not one.

From the review: Main reports insufficient context and supports manual compaction; automatic compaction, retry, and restart recovery introduce a new handoff policy.

It has also had no activity for 11 days. If this is still important to you, message me on Twitter at @maria_rcks and I'll take another look.
