Model: built with Claude Opus 5.5 in Claude Code.

Problem

When a client asks the background service to update, the launcher stops the server and only then copies the whole database with fs.copyFile. If the copy does not fit, the update fails with db-backup-failed, rolls back, and restarts the old server cold. On a machine with less free space than the database, every update attempt is an outage. Fixes #14515.

Change

  • Before the server is stopped, databaseBackupBlocker checks that the backup fits. If it does not, the update is rejected through the existing update-rejected path with a reason the client already shows: "Not enough free disk space to back up the database before updating: X GB needed, Y GB free. Free up disk space and try again. The server was not stopped."
  • Backups and rollback restores copy with cp -c on macOS (APFS clone) and cp --reflink=auto on Linux (reflink on btrfs/XFS, normal copy elsewhere). They fall back to fs.copyFile if cp fails, and on Windows. Node's own clone flag is not used. On macOS, COPYFILE_FICLONE silently does a full copy (1 GiB took 805 ms and used 1 GiB of free space), and COPYFILE_FICLONE_FORCE fails with ENOSYS.
  • How much space the check requires:
    • If a full copy (1.05x the database plus WAL) fits, the update goes ahead.
    • Otherwise, if the backup will be a clone, it needs max(1 GiB, 10% of the database). That is headroom for the trial server's writes, migrations included, which diverge from the shared blocks.
    • Otherwise the full copy is required.
  • Whether the backup will be a clone is decided without writing test data or measuring free space:
    • On macOS, cp -c clones within one APFS volume and silently copies anywhere else. So the database and backup directories must share a device whose filesystem type matches the system volume's, which is always APFS. (statfs().type on macOS is a per-boot index, so it is compared with / rather than a constant.)
    • On Linux, each existing database file is cloned with cp --reflink=always, then the clones are deleted. That command fails instead of copying when a file cannot be reflinked, which also covers btrfs databases marked No_COW (chattr +C).
    • On other platforms, never.
  • Restoring a cloned backup keeps a linked database's links. cp -c replaces its destination with a new file, so a rollback restores into the file a symlinked database path resolves to (the link itself stays), and copies in place into a hard-linked file. If an interrupted restore left the link dangling, the retry follows it to the missing file, resolving relative links through directory links the way the filesystem does, and syncs that file's directory. Because a hard-linked database is restored by a full copy, the check also sizes it for a full copy rather than a clone.
  • If the check cannot run, the update is rejected too, with "Could not check that the database backup fits before updating: ... The server was not stopped." That covers an unreadable database file and a failing statfs. The alternative is stopping the server without knowing whether the backup fits.

The check is an admission check, not a guarantee. Free space is sampled once before the server stops, so other disk use in the seconds before the copy can still make the backup fail; that failure keeps the existing db-backup-failed rollback. The clone headroom is a heuristic for the trial's writes; a migration that rewrites more than that can still run out of space, and the rollback path is unchanged for that case.

The launcher stays on Node built-ins (no Effect), as its header requires. The running launcher picks this up after its next restart or successful update.

Scope and approval

Fixes triaged bug #14515. This changes only the launcher's backup copy and adds a preflight before the existing stop step. No contract, client or server changes.

Verification

  • New launcher integration tests drive a real Launcher with a fake runtime that requests an update. They inject the free-space and clone checks, so the result does not depend on the test machine:
    • With 0 bytes free, the update is rejected with the free-space reason. The trial runtime is never started and the service state is unchanged.
    • With a free-space reader that throws, the update is rejected with the check-failure reason, again with no trial and no state change. This test fails against a fail-open version.
  • New databaseBackupBlocker tests (10 GiB sparse database):
    • A full copy that fits passes.
    • A clone with 1.5 GiB free passes; with 0.5 GiB free it is rejected ("1.0 GB needed").
    • A non-cloning filesystem with 8 GiB free is rejected ("10.5 GB needed").
    • A missing database throws ENOENT, which the launcher turns into a rejection.
  • A filesystem test runs the real clone check. On macOS it detects the APFS temp directory as cloneable. On Linux it runs the --reflink=always probe and leaves nothing in the backup directory.
  • The rollback test ("restores the database when a migrating trial exits") now also runs with the database path a symlink to a file in another directory, and with a dangling link: the database directory is a link, the database is a relative ../original.sqlite link, and the trial deletes its target before exiting. In both, the link is unchanged afterwards and the file it points to holds the original contents. The dangling case fails with lexical .. resolution. On Linux GNU cp already writes through an existing destination link, so the plain symlink case guards the behaviour rather than reproducing the macOS bug, which needs cp -c on APFS.
  • The "server exits during the backup check" test now answers the free-space probe when the child has disconnected, not after a fixed 500 ms delay; it fails if the launcher's reconnection check is removed.
  • At head (main 9c9ae43d80 merged, Linux): vp test run apps/server/src/serviceLauncher.test.ts apps/server/src/cloud/selfUpdate.test.ts: 2 files, 28 passed. apps/server typecheck: no errors; lint clean on both files.
  • Measured on macOS: cp -c of a 32 MiB file on APFS changed free space by 176 KiB. cp -c onto an existing 256 MiB file replaced it with a clone (new inode, its old blocks were freed), so rollback restores are near-free too. cp -c from APFS to a FAT volume exited 0 after a full copy, which is why macOS cloning is decided from the filesystem rather than from cp's exit code.
  • Not run: a full update through a real launcher and runtime download. A macOS rollback of a symlinked or hard-linked database with cp -c (the fix is reasoned from Apple's cp source, which unlinks the destination before cloning). The Linux clone path runs only in CI (ext4, not cloneable); btrfs and XFS were not exercised. Windows was not exercised.

Implemented and tested by Claude Sonnet 5.5 and Claude Opus 5.5 in Claude Code, running inside T3 Code. Reviewed by GPT-6 Astra over two rounds (findings fixed); the clone check was then reworked after Macroscope and CodeRabbit review.

Approvability

Verdict: Not approved

Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable — The production launcher now performs complex cross-platform backup, clone-detection, rollback, and pre-stop admission logic, changing a critical service-update workflow. Added static-analysis suppression directives also require human review under the repository’s review policy.

The launcher checks database backup capacity before accepting an update. Database backup and restoration use copy-on-write cloning where supported, with regular-copy fallback. Tests cover capacity checks and update rejection.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to d7ec2

The update preflight works as intended. On macOS, however, if the database path is a symlink, a rollback can replace the link with a standalone copy and leave the real database unrestored. Fix this before merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to d7ec2

The capacity check reduces avoidable update outages, and update access remains restricted. However, clone-based restoration on macOS can replace a database symlink instead of restoring its underlying database, weakening rollback guarantees for that configuration.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · reliability · inferred: On macOS, rollback through a final-component database symlink can restore the pathname without restoring the original database referent. Intake accepts an absolute path and preserves it without resolving symlinks; restore now uses cp -c. The inspected Apple implementation unlinks an existing destination before cloning, so it can replace the symlink with a restored file while leaving the referent modified by the failed trial. The launcher then records rollback completion and discards the backup. The former fs.copyFile restore followed the destination symlink. Durable restore markers and copy-error fallback do not detect a successful copy to the wrong database identity. This affects rollback containment and persistent-state ownership for linked database configurations.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Normal operation affects one service installation's configured SQLite files and update backup directory. The copy and inspection operations inherit the existing launcher's filesystem privileges. A compromised active child can already submit another absolute database path accessible to that account; the PR does not introduce that authority. The identified regression concerns database alias ownership during macOS rollback, not a demonstrated cross-tenant or privilege expansion.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The inspected update boundary retains scope authorization and managed-child IPC. Launcher role/version checks constrain admission, and a disconnected child does not cause pending state to be recorded after the asynchronous capacity check. Protocol string checks alone are not path authorization; broader absolute-path authority is inherited from the existing child trust model.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Serialized transitions, durable rollback markers, and staging cleanup contain ordinary interruption and partial-copy failures. They do not verify that a successful restore preserved the original database referent. The existing migration-rollback test checks restored bytes at a regular pathname, so it does not establish alias-preserving restoration.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Make database identity explicit across backup and rollback: either preserve supported aliases when restoring their referents or reject unsupported linked-file configurations before accepting an update. Validate the chosen behavior against deployed macOS copy semantics and interrupted restoration before relying on clone-aware restore as equivalent to the previous implementation.

Preserve database symlinks during restoration.

If pending.dbPath is a symlink on macOS, copyDatabaseFile(source, target) runs cp -c. Apple's cp -c removes an existing destination before cloning. A rollback therefore replaces the symlink with a regular file and leaves its original target unchanged. Resolve an existing target symlink before restoring, and keep the symlink in place. The previous NodeFSP.copyFile operation followed the destination symlink. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

…t cannot fit

The boot-service launcher stopped the server before discovering a full
copy of the database would not fit, so a low-disk update attempt caused an
outage and a cold restart. Back up with a copy-on-write clone (cp -c on
APFS, cp --reflink=auto on Linux; Node's own clone flag falls back to a full
copy on macOS) and check free space before the server is stopped. A backup
that cannot fit, or a check that cannot run, now rejects the update with a
clear reason and leaves the server running.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
The free-space probe could mistake a full copy for a clone when other disk
activity freed space during it, and a fresh probe file can be reflinked on
btrfs even when a No_COW database cannot. Decide cloning without measuring:
on macOS, both directories must share a device on the system volume's
filesystem (APFS); on Linux, each existing database file must clone with
cp --reflink=always. A database that cannot be inspected now fails the
check instead of counting as empty, and a clone keeps 10% headroom for the
trial's writes.

…ted servers

On macOS, decide clone support from the devices of the database file and
its existing sidecars, following symlinks, rather than its parent
directory. If the active server exits while the backup check runs, the
launcher no longer answers it or records a pending update; the queued exit
transition reports the exit instead.

On macOS `cp -c` replaces its destination, so restoring a cloned backup
over a symlinked database replaced the link with a file, and over a
hard-linked one cut it off from its other links. Restore now clones into
the file a symlink resolves to, and copies in place into a hard-linked
file; the backup check sizes a hard-linked database for a full copy.

The exit-during-check test now waits for the child to disconnect
instead of a fixed delay.

…upted rollback

A crash between `cp -c` removing the database file and cloning over it
leaves the symlinked path dangling. The retried restore now follows the
link to its missing target instead of replacing the link, and syncs the
target's directory.

Resolving `..` in a dangling link lexically skipped a directory link
above it and restored a sibling file. The link's directory is now
canonicalized and the target joined without normalizing.

Re CodeRabbit's restore finding (review): confirmed and fixed. On macOS cp -c unlinks its destination before cloning, so restoring over a symlinked database replaced the link with a file, and over a hard-linked one replaced the inode. Since 399fe75f52 the restore writes into the file the link resolves to and copies in place into a hard-linked file (whose backup is then sized for a full copy); 8449e3097c and f9e4b89ec5 follow a link left dangling by an interrupted restore, resolving relative links through directory links. The rollback test now covers a symlinked database and that dangling case. The "server exits during the backup check" test waits for the child's disconnect instead of a 500 ms timer. The fix is reasoned from Apple's cp source; a macOS run of the symlinked rollback is still outstanding.
