Fixes #16374

What Changed

When T3_BOOT_SERVICE_UNIT says the command is running inside t3code.service:

  • install (used by t3 update and t3 service install) writes nothing itself. It runs systemd-run --user <target t3> service install --base-dir <home>, so the unchanged stop-first install runs from outside the unit's cgroup. Its output is appended to boot-service.log, since nobody waits on it.
  • restart runs daemon-reload, enable, and systemctl --user restart --no-block.
  • Neither is done when the command returns, so the CLI no longer says it is. restart() resolves "restarted" | "queued" | "skipped" and onboarding resolves "ready" | "pending" | "skipped". t3 update, t3 service install, t3 service restart and t3 connect report the switch as under way and point at the log, instead of "restarted" or "✓ Background service ready".

Nothing changes outside the unit or on launchd. uninstall from inside the unit has the same problem but deletes files after the stop, so it's left for a separate change.

Tested with new tests in bootService.test.ts, service.test.ts and connect.test.ts. On systemd 259:

  • A KillMode=mixed unit left inactive by stop-then-start from a child came back with restart --no-block.
  • A failing command run through the same systemd-run form appended its stdout and stderr to the log.
  • systemd-run expands ${VAR} in arguments, but not in property values or the executable path, so only --base-dir escapes $.
  • The systemd-run … service install handoff ran as a no-op against an installed, current service.

Why

Run from a T3 terminal or by an agent, t3 update and t3 service restart stop t3code.service and only start it again once the stop returns, so the service is left stopped if the command doesn't survive the stop. On 0.0.42 it didn't: an agent ran t3 update --yes to cross the 0.0.42 → 0.0.44 launcher protocol bump (which the in-app update correctly refuses), and the stop's KillMode=mixed cgroup kill took the command with it. #17662 moved agents and terminals into their own scopes, but the command still dies before the start on current main: shutting the server down kills a T3 terminal's shell, some providers tear down their tool commands, and Cursor SDK tools, ACP client terminals and hosts without scopes still run in the service's cgroup. Details in #16374.

The fix doesn't depend on which cgroup or process group the command ends up in. T3_BOOT_SERVICE_UNIT passes the terminal environment filter and the scope wrapper, and both handoffs give the work to the user manager, which outlives the command.

The install is handed off whole, rather than written in place with only the restart queued, because its stop-first order is what serialises it with a remote update the launcher may be accepting. A restart writes no state, and the launcher lets an in-flight update transition finish before a stop, so queuing it with the user manager is enough.

…onger leave the service stopped

Run from a T3 terminal or by an agent, both commands stopped t3code.service
first. The stop killed the command itself, since it runs in the unit's
cgroup, so the service was never started again.

When T3_BOOT_SERVICE_UNIT says we are inside the unit, install writes the
files through the existing start=false path and then queues the restart
with `systemctl --user restart --no-block`. restart does the same.

Approvability

Verdict: Not approved

Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable — This focused fix adds cross-process systemd transient-unit orchestration and asynchronous service restart behavior across update, install, restart, and onboarding paths. Because it changes service lifecycle ownership and timing beyond the CLI component, human review is warranted.

Writing the state file without stopping the launcher first could replace a
remote update it had just accepted, and the restart that followed would drop
it. Hand the whole install to `systemd-run --user` instead, so it keeps the
stop-first path that serialises with the launcher. restart keeps the queued
restart: it writes no state.

The service changes distinguish queued operations from completed work, and no concrete merge-blocking issue remains in the supplied evidence. Merge after normal checks pass.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to f4e9d

The handoff fixes commands terminating themselves and preserves per-user permissions. However, overlapping delegated installs can survive the original session and race shared service files, potentially undermining downgrade checks and leaving inconsistent runtime selection.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · reliability · inferred: Overlapping in-service installations now create independent transient units that survive service shutdown. Each installer checks the previous version and then separately replaces service state and the unit file without an install-wide cross-process lock. Two different targets can both pass the downgrade check against the same earlier state, then interleave writes or overwrite the newer target with the older one. This can undermine version monotonicity and leave launcher and state identities inconsistent. Single-file atomic replacement and launcher stop serialization do not serialize these independent installers. The write sequence predates the PR, but the handoff newly exposes it to surviving in-service callers.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The evidenced exposure is the invoking user's T3 service, runtime state, and connected sessions. Triggering the handoff requires existing CLI or tool execution in that user's context. No root, alternate-user, or cross-tenant authority expansion is established by the reviewed path.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The retained concern is overlapping authorized installs producing runtime-selection or rollback drift. It is not an established unauthenticated attack or privilege escalation; an actor already controlling same-user CLI execution also has the existing explicit downgrade option.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Commands are passed as command and argument arrays. The transient install uses the prepared pinned executable, escapes dollar expansion in its base-directory argument, and clears the handoff marker. Connect's new onboarding reporter consumes outcomes for display after authorization rather than introducing a new authorization decision.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Manager-owned restart avoids stopping the caller before restart ownership transfers. Focused tests cover transient-install delegation, special-character arguments, queued restart, and an early handoff failure that leaves the service running. These tests do not establish concurrent-install safety.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Serialize the shared install transaction across processes, with pending-update and downgrade checks performed under that ownership. Validate mixed-version overlapping handoffs, interrupted writes, and recovery so the final state and unit identify one authoritative installation.

systemd expands $VAR in command arguments, so a literal ${...} in the T3
home would reach the transient install altered. The executable path is not
expanded and stays as is.

An in-service install hands its work to a transient unit and an in-service
restart only queues one, so neither is done when the command returns. The
transient install now appends its output to boot-service.log, restart
resolves "queued" instead of true, and onboarding resolves "pending", so
`t3 update`, `t3 service install/restart` and `t3 connect` say the switch is
under way instead of reporting it finished.
