A pnpm-global provider update could advertise a fresh release but run @latest, which pnpm could resolve to an older version under minimumReleaseAge. Use the advertised stable version in both the copyable update command and the command the Update action executes.

The change reuses the existing targeted-update helper, preserving command flags, environment and update locks. Other installers and missing or unsupported versions keep their existing behavior. A strict release-age policy or affected older pnpm may still reject the command; the existing updater reports that failure.

Retains the fix by @RaphaelFakhri in #14295, with the pinned main revision merged and original commits preserved. Release-age settings remain the separate follow-up in discussion 15329.

Validation at 8e2186886d:

  • 71 focused tests pass in maintenanceResolver.test.ts and providerMaintenanceRunner.test.ts. Two PR regressions cover the displayed command and executed arguments, including retained pnpm flags and fallback behavior.
  • Reverting the fix makes both regressions fail. Removing the pnpm-only guard or fallback also fails the relevant assertion.
  • Changed-file lint/format and provider-core/server typechecks pass.
  • No live provider package was installed; focused tests exercise command construction and execution through the existing runner.

Independent Opus and Sol reviews found no code blockers in the full cumulative diff.

Current-head CI will run after this update; earlier results cover the original head only.

Implementation: Claude Fable 5.1. Test assessment and independent review: Claude Opus 5.5. Independent review and coordination: GPT-6.1 Sol, through Claude Code and Codex in T3 Code.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at 8e21868

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a narrowly scoped fix to ensure pnpm-global updates install the stable version already advertised, while preserving existing behavior for other installers and unsupported versions. The execution and displayed command paths are both covered by focused tests, with no product-default or static-analysis changes.

📝 Walkthrough

For eligible pnpm-global updates, the resolver now uses the advertised latest version to create an exact-version update action. Provider advisories and update runs use that resolved action. Tests cover pinned pnpm commands and cases that retain @latest.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~15 minutes

Change: Bug fix · Severity of issue fixed: Low

Suggested reviewers: juliusmarminge

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 4383e

The supplied evidence establishes no additional issue that should hold this change from merging.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 4383e

The update remains limited to an existing provider package and preserves installer ownership, locking, and failure handling. However, installing the advertised version directly may bypass pnpm’s waiting period for newly published releases. That policy effect needs confirmation for supported pnpm versions.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: Ordinary pnpm-global updates may now bypass release-age quarantine by installing the registry-advertised version explicitly. This could make a newly published compromised provider release installable before the waiting period previously applied to @latest. The command change is confirmed; effective age-policy bypass and persistent exclusions remain unverified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The changed exposure is an existing pnpm-global provider installation on the server host. A compromised installed provider could affect the account and assets accessible to its eventual execution, including other consumers of that global installation. The PR does not add privilege elevation; actual account privileges, tenant isolation, and credential exposure are not established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The conditional attack path requires control over publication or latest-version metadata for the already selected provider package, followed by an update request. If exact pnpm specifications bypass release-age filtering, a newly published malicious release can reach installation sooner than through the former @latest path. No arbitrary-package injection or confirmed runtime policy bypass was established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The registry-to-installer transition remains constrained by capability-derived package identity, numeric version validation, fresh ownership resolution, and compatibility rejection. Exact-version installation already existed for recommended targeted updates, but ordinary latest updates now enter that action-construction path without the targeted request’s recommended-version requirement.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Confirm exact-version behavior under supported pnpm versions and configured release-age policies, including persistent exclusions. If pinning overrides quarantine, make that override an explicit policy choice or preserve the configured waiting period when resolving the advertised update.

Explanation

The PR meets [#14249]. resolveLatestProviderUpdateAction pins pnpm-global updates to a stable advertised version by reusing makeTargetedProviderUpdateAction. The advisory exposes the resolved command, and the runner uses the resolved action for latest-version updates. Tests cover the pinned command and fallback for prerelease or unknown versions.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within [#14249]. Production changes address pnpm-global update selection and its advisory command. The added tests verify this behavior and its fallback cases. The summaries show no unrelated changes.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description explains the problem, implementation, scope, validation results, fallback behavior, and remaining limitations. It does not reproduce the template headings exactly, but it provides the required information and is sufficiently complete for this focused fix.

The description says a prerelease or missing latestVersion falls back to @latest, but nothing tests that. It might be worth adding a couple of assertions to the new providerMaintenance.test.ts case so it doesn't quietly break later

Also, for the maintainers: With this change, updating a pnpm-installed provider from T3 Code installs brand-new releases right away and skips pnpm's default 24h minimumReleaseAge delay. Could there be a setting for this as a follow-up? Some people will want the newest release immediately, while others would rather T3 Code only advertise versions old enough to pass their minimumReleaseAge, so the update prompt matches what pnpm would actually install

Added tests for the prerelease and unknown-version fallback, thanks for the catch. And turn that upside-down smile, upside-down 😄

apps/server/src/provider/providerMaintenance.ts:221-228
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Do not use an exact version as a release-age bypass.

When a user explicitly configures minimumReleaseAge, pnpm 11 enables strict release-age filtering by default. If the advertised version is too new, pnpm add -g package@x.y.z rejects it. The updater then records a failed update because it treats a non-zero command exit as failure.

Gate the exact-version command on release-age eligibility. Keep the update pending when the version is too new. Do not disable minimumReleaseAge.

I'd keep this PR to the fix. A setting makes sense, but that's the maintainers' call, and I'm happy to do it as a follow-up if they want it.

That’s what I thought, and it sounds good to me, so I created this feature request about it

…updates

pnpm 11 and later resolve @latest to the newest release older than
minimumReleaseAge and exit 0, so the update left the provider outdated.
Pin the update command to the version the advisory shows.

Hi! We are cleaning up open PRs, and this one does not say which model or harness was used to create it. If this change is really important, we recommend rebuilding the PR with a newer model and noting the model and harness in the PR description.

Taking over this one. I’ll reduce the tests to the useful coverage, update the implementation against current main, and verify it before publishing the changes.
