fix(web): type in front of bold that starts a composer line - #13217
Conversation
Styled markers render as decorations, so a styled edge is a single document position. Give the caret two stops there (stored marks pick which), let ArrowLeft/ArrowRight switch stops before moving, and draw the revealed markers on the matching side of the caret. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Check the styled edge before skipping a chip so the plain stop between styled text and an adjacent chip is reachable, and turn off Tiptap's code exit (which inserted a space at the end of a line) now that ArrowRight leaves code through the caret stops. ApprovabilityVerdict: Approved at Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a focused rich-text composer bug fix that changes caret behavior only at styled boundaries, preserves ordinary editing paths, and adds targeted coverage for the affected cases. It introduces no schema, infrastructure, security-sensitive, product-default, or static-analysis changes. Notes:

Marks the user toggled at a styled edge are kept, and the arrow key moves the caret as usual instead of resetting them. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

What Changed
In the rich text composer, the caret now has two stops wherever styled text meets plain text or the edge of a line: one that types plain text and one that types styled text. ArrowLeft and ArrowRight switch between the two stops before moving on, and the revealed

If you paste Markdown that starts with bold, like
**What the cloud won't fix:** it gives us..., you can't type anything in front of it. The caret shows up before the**, but whatever you type lands inside the bold. The markers are decorations, not text, so the start of the line and the start of the bold are the same document position. ProseMirror gives that position the marks of the text after it, so typing there is always bold. The end of a line has the same problem in reverse, where you can't type plain text after a trailing bold.
The fix uses ProseMirror stored marks to pick which stop the caret is on. It doesn't add hidden characters or change how the prompt serializes.
Two related adjustments:
