fix(web): let browsers pick VSCodium, Cursor or Zed for remote open - #11209

ApprovabilityVerdict: Needs Human Approval Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This changes browser remote-open behavior from a VS Code-only default to an ordered list of remote-capable editors, while also changing preferred-editor fallback behavior. Because the browser product default and available choices change, the behavior warrants human review. You can add or adjust custom eligibility rules. Learn more. |

A browser cannot probe which editors the viewing machine has, so the remote open-in-editor picker hardcoded VS Code. On a machine with VSCodium or Cursor but no VS Code nothing handles vscode://, and Open silently does nothing. Offer every remote-capable editor in browsers, VS Code first, and remember the pick as the picker already does for local editors. The desktop app keeps probing its own machine. The preferred-editor fallback now takes the first entry of the list it is given; the server's PATH probe already returns catalog order, so local behavior is unchanged.

Taking over this one for batch other-providers-01. I will merge current main, retain browser editor choices including current IntelliJ support, verify the picker and push to this branch. |

The reviewed takeover was pushed with normal fast-forward pushes, but this branch was force-pushed back to the original commit twice (05:57 and 06:13 UTC). I have stopped pushing to the contributor branch. The complete reviewed candidate is preserved at 2beebbbe25 on This takeover is blocked on maintainer/author coordination about restoring the reviewed head or replacing this PR. No replacement PR was opened and nothing was merged. |

On Line 158, the

The cache is shared for the page lifetime andcachedProbedEditors !== nullshort-circuits all later calls. This is safe in production, becausewindow.desktopBridgedoes not change during a page lifetime. The effect dependency onbridgeandunprobedEditorscan never re-run the effect meaningfully after the first run.The cached value does not distinguish between environments. Tests that stub

Sorry for the disruption and wasted work, @juliusmarminge. This was my automated Gitea-to-GitHub mirror: it treated the GitHub fork as a downstream copy and repeatedly force-pushed the stale branch over your updates. The server logs confirm the resets you reported. I have moved that mirror to a separate repository and verified that a complete sync leaves this PR branch untouched. I also restored your reviewed candidate The mirror blocker is fixed, and this is now ready for you to take over again. I kept your reviewed candidate unchanged; GitHub currently reports conflicts with current main, so it still needs an update before merging. Sorry again for causing the extra work. |
Takeover status: ready for maintainer handoff. The automated Gitea-to-GitHub mirror that repeatedly reset this branch now writes to a separate repository. The PR branch has been restored to the reviewed candidate 2beebbbe25 preserved on
takeover/other-providers-01-11209, retaining the original commits. Maintainer edits remain enabled. The evidence below describes this restored candidate. Its previous CI run passed; Macroscope requires human product approval. Nothing has been merged.Browser remote open offered only VS Code even though the shared editor catalog supports VSCodium, Cursor, Zed and JetBrains editors. Browsers now offer that catalog with VS Code as the default, remember an available selection, and use the supplied first editor when a saved choice is unavailable. Desktop keeps its installed-editor probe and VS Code fallback for a missing or failed probe. The chat shortcut uses the same remote choice with the details panel open or closed. The panel leaves shortcut ownership to the global chat handler, file previews take precedence, and local execution rechecks the selected environment grant.
Based on @HaukeSchnau's work in #11209, preserving the original commits and merging current main. Conflict resolution retains main's IntelliJ support and authorization behavior. Removed the old membership assertion that incorrectly excluded IntelliJ; no new editor registry or picker branching was needed.
Before: actual main production modules, default browser picker.
After: current head, matching synthetic data and 1280×800 viewport.
The running web client defaults to VS Code. Selecting VSCodium updates the preferred editor without launching it; after a full reload, the primary action and shortcut label retain VSCodium.
Verification uses an isolated server/database with synthetic stopped threads. The browser has no desktop bridge; 127.0.0.2 exercises remote-link routing to the server's advertised SSH host. This proves the picker and persisted preference, not a connection from another machine or a native editor protocol handler. The same temporary font fallback was applied to both captures for this headless host.
Tests: 35 before → 37 after across existing remoteOpen, editorPreferences, OpenInPicker logic and browser suites. The superficial PR-added assertion is removed. Three added cases cover ordered fallback, the second panel visibility variant and local shortcut grant revocation. The existing browser case now exercises the real availability hook, VS Code default, IntelliJ/VSCodium/Cursor/Zed choices, preference persistence and keyboard opening without host operate permission. Isolated reversions of availability and preference ordering both fail the intended assertions; restored source passes. The shortcut follow-up first failed three behavior assertions (mounted panel requested both client and host opening; hidden panel requested host only; revoked local shortcut requested a command), then passed after the fix. All 37 tests, web typecheck, targeted lint/formatting and diff checks pass.
Review round one found and confirmed the pre-existing chat shortcut routing conflict. The minimal test and implementation follow-up fixes it; round two then caught a terminal shortcut ordering regression. Moving the picker listener to document bubbling preserves terminal input and file-preview precedence. Both reviewers cleared the third independent full-diff round at the final head. Live current-head verification also pressed Ctrl+O with details mounted, details hidden and a real file preview open. Each keypress produced one remote hint/preference update and zero attempted host editor RPCs. The transport observer would block and record any unexpected host editor request; it recorded none. The focused browser tests additionally verify the exact VSCodium URL and zero host commands. Native protocol handler launch success is not claimed. With a file preview open, the real integrated terminal received Ctrl+O as control byte 15 with zero editor side effects or host requests. Focusing chat afterwards produced one remote action, preserving file-preview precedence.
The restored candidate passed CI in the linked previous run; CodeRabbit was still pending at the original handoff. GitHub currently reports conflicts with current main, so this candidate still needs an update before merging.
Web and the shared desktop renderer apply; Electron IPC is unchanged and older optional-probe behavior was inspected. Native editor launches/SSH connections, Electron, macOS, Windows, iOS and Android were not run here. No mobile UI or provider protocol changes.
