My personal configuration files (dotfiles)

Background

This repository contains my dotfiles for my Linux systems. You will find a level of chaos in the organisation, as they have developed over several years, and during this time I have used (and continue to use) Gentoo for most of my systems, as well as setting up a working NixOS setup (which I later abandoned), and Guix (first of all in 2021, then again currently). This has complicated simple configuration, where there are significant differences in the approach used for the different systems. For example, .profile, .bashrc etc are all different under the different distributions.

Emacs

The emacs configuration is generated (tangled) from emacs.org and org-workflow.org. The output files are not stored in the repository. They are generated and placed in the .files directory, when you run:

~/.dotfiles/.files/.bin/update-dotfiles

They can then be installed in the system along with the other configuration files stored in the repository with stow:

cd ~/.dotfiles/.files
stow -v -t ~ .

You will need to manually resolve any errors where files exist which will be over-written by stow.

Guix

The Guix configuration tree is saved under the paulj directory. Subdirectories:

  • packages - For storing packages not available upstream
  • home-services - configuration files for home services
  • files - configuration files which are stored via guix home in gnu/store. Ideally, all configuration files should end up here for guix systems, and the ~.dotfiles/.files tree should only be required for non-guix (and non-nix for that matter) systems.
  • systems - configuration tree for each system:
    • pluto - Dell Wyse 5750, running headless with full libre-linux kernel. The genuine Guix experience.
    • mars - Lenovo X270: i5-5200U with 256Gb SSD, and 32Gb ram, equipped with the 1366x768 screen.
    • venus - Lenovo X270 (20HM model) - i7-7500U, with 512Gb SSD and 32Gb ram, equipped with the 1920x1080 screen.
    • neptune - Lenovo X390 (20Q0 model) - Core i7-8665U, with 512Gb SSD, and 32Gb ram.

Gentoo

Gentoo has been my staple Linux distribution since 2004. Systems currently installed with Gentoo:

  • tristan - Desktop AMD system, dual booting with Windows (for work - I retire in October 2025, and then Windows will be removed).
  • isolde - Lenovo T14 AMD - also currently dual booting with Windows.
  • shingo - Udoo Bolt V8, used in my workshop. More information here. It has a built in arduino, but I haven’t used it.
