Problem

  • test/aot/built-in-functions-where-tests-replace-members-of-other-classes.test.ts takes 400 s on debian 13 x64-asan (build 137474).
  • Its projects print through process.stdout. Such a program holds Bun's own modules behind that stream: 127 units, not 60.
  • The file states no answer, call count or test result. It passes when a replacement replaces nothing.

Fix

  • The one-program run gets a copy that prints through console.log. The run over layers keeps the project. Plain Bun runs both.
  • The file states what plain Bun prints: 58 answers, and per case the rows that call a replaced member.
  • Each run must print that and pass both test files. The one-program run must say that it is one program. A test has 120 s, not 240.
  • Verified: bun bd test test/aot/built-in-functions-where-tests-replace-members-of-other-classes.test.ts takes 263 and 250 s, was 371 and 375 s. Release build: 10.1 s, was 15.4 s. Four checks of test/aot pass.

Background

  • bun test --aot compiles test files first: as one program, or over layers with Bun's own code lowest.
  • A scan finds the built-in members that test files replace. Every program of the run is compiled with that set.
  • Considered one run over layers for all ten cases: one lowest layer, not ten. Each case would be compiled with the others' replacements.

Downsides

  • As one program, a case no longer compiles the modules behind process.stdout, nor writes through them.
  • The ten lowest layers remain: 75% of the CPU time left. In a 4-CPU bucket the file takes 104 s, was 125 s.
Notes

How CI runs the file. Build 137474 ran it on three lanes, in a batch beside other files. It passed on the first try on each.

Lane Seconds Files at a time
debian 13 x64-asan 400 7
debian 13 x64 190 3
debian 13 aarch64 134 3

CI of this PR. Build 137510, at f584dc8. The file passes on the first try on its three lanes.

Lane Build 137474, main's file Build 137510, this PR
debian 13 x64-asan 400 s 163.0 s
debian 13 x64 190 s 64.2 s
debian 13 aarch64 134 s 42.1 s
  • The two columns do not compare one to one. The runner gives a test file that a PR changes a process of its own, beside one or two other files, with as many tests at once as the lane has processors. In build 137474 the file ran in a bucket with two tests at once.
  • The 28 files that are red in build 137510 are the 28 that are red in build 137474, and they are red in the last builds of merged PRs. None is this file. 34 other files passed on a retry, 27 of them also in build 137474.

Where the time goes. Release build of the base commit b9f2ec3 (bun scripts/build.ts --profile=release --lto=off), the case array-join alone on 12 CPUs:

Run Wall CPU
plain bun test --isolate 0.05 s 0.05 s
--aot as one program, main's project 1.7 s 8.8 s
--aot as one program, the copy that prints through console.log 0.6 s 1.6 s
--aot over layers, either project 2.7 s 11.8 s

With BUN_JSC_logAOTPhaseTimes=1 a build says what it holds:

Build Units Bytes of program
One program, main's project 127 2,720,235
One program, the copy 60 983,543
One program, a project of two test files of which one prints a line 58 852,405
Lowest layer of a run over layers, main's project 127 28,344,720
Lowest layer, the project of two test files 127 28,361,077
  • The lowest layer takes 10.75 s of the 12.75 s of CPU time that the four builds of a run over layers take with the log. The layer of src/ takes 1.22 s, the two test files 0.18 s and 0.60 s.
  • A run over layers of the project of two test files takes 8.7 s of CPU time. So of the 116 s that this PR's file takes, 87 s are the ten lowest layers.
  • Debug build, the same case alone: plain 1.0 s, one program 26.7 s (140 s of CPU time), over layers 45.4 s (225 s). The copy as one program: 11.5 s (34 s).
  • No build of the ten cases starts over, and no file is loaded again. The scan finds what each case replaces: 2, 1, 1, 1, 0, 1, 4, 1, 2 and 5 members, and 2 names added in the fifth case.

Timings of the whole file. Linux x64, 12 CPUs, 16 GB. Main's file and this PR's file ran in turns. CPU is user plus system time of all processes.

Build of Bun, how the file ran Main's file This PR

  • With the debug build the slowest test took 188 s of its 270 s before, and 133 s now. All 10 tests pass in each run.
  • The second commit adds the plain run of the copy: 0.05 s a test on a release build, 1.0 s on a debug build. The three rows on 4 CPUs are from the first commit.
  • The bucket: taskset -c 0-3 bun test --parallel=3 --max-concurrency=2 --timeout=90000 --dots --reporter=junit --reporter-outfile=<file> with this file, three-layers-agree.test.ts and callbacks-named-by-another-program-of-a-test-run.test.ts, and the variables that scripts/runner.node.ts sets (BUN_GARBAGE_COLLECTOR_LEVEL=1, BUN_JSC_randomIntegrityAuditRate=1.0, BUN_FEATURE_FLAG_NO_ORPHANS=1, a TMPDIR of its own). The time of a file is from the junit report.
  • The files beside it in the bucket do not pay. callbacks-named-by-another-program-of-a-test-run.test.ts: 116.5 and 118.0 s, was 127.4 and 132.2 s. three-layers-agree.test.ts: 82.4 and 85.9 s, was 84.2 and 84.5 s. The whole bucket: 116.7 and 118.1 s (CPU 457 and 463 s), was 127.5 and 132.3 s (CPU 505 and 522 s).
  • This PR starts the same number of commands at a time as main. A test runs its four commands one after the other.
  • No release build with AddressSanitizer was measured.

The two projects of a case.

  • dir holds the project of main's file, byte for byte, in all ten cases. Plain Bun and the run over layers run it. Checked: both files' templates written to disk and compared with diff -r.
  • Plain Bun runs the copy too, before the copy is compiled. So each compiled run follows a plain run of its own project.
  • dirForOneProgram differs in one line of a.test.js: console.log(lines.join("\n")) in place of process.stdout.write(lines.join("\n") + "\n"). Both write the same bytes.
  • Over layers process.stdout costs nothing. The lowest layer is 28,344,720 bytes with it and without it, in two folders with names of one length. A run takes 11.7 to 12.1 s of CPU time with it and 11.4 to 12.3 s without.
  • So the run over layers still compiles the modules behind the stream for what each case replaces, and still writes through them after the members are restored.

Assertions, before and after.

  • Before: the exit code of the plain run, then that it printed 348 lines with |, then each compiled run equal to the plain run in those lines and the exit code.
  • After, for each of the four runs, one toEqual with what is stated:
    • stdout, every line behind the line that names the version: the 348 rows and nothing else.
    • the verdict of each test by name: pass a, pass z.
    • the exit code, last.
  • The 348 rows follow from two tables. answers has what each of the 58 rows answers while nothing is replaced. calls of a case has the rows that call a replaced member, with the count and the members. In every other row, and before and after the replacement, the count has to be 0.
  • The counts follow from ECMAScript, but for one row: how often [{}, [], {}].sort() converts an element is up to the engine. The Bun of 367d939 (2026-09-18) and the Bun of this branch print the same 3,480 lines.
  • run() of harness/run.ts already fails a run with TestRunLayers:2 that was not built over 2 layers. The other compiled run now has the word TestRunSaysItsForm, which changes nothing about the build, and has to say AOT test run | one program.
  • No inline snapshot: the ten tests come from one loop, so they share one call site.

The time limit. A test has raiseDefaultTimeout(120_000): 120 s, and 270 s for a Bun with assertions, as before. 36 files of test/aot that run over layers state 120 s, 9 state 240 s. In main's file a test holds two builds of 127 units: the one program and the lowest layer. On a release build a test now takes about 10 s with all ten at once on 12 CPUs, and 21 s on average in the bucket above.

The assertions fail when they must. Each row is one change to a copy of the file at the first commit, run with the release build:

Fault Main's file This PR
The replacement of array-join replaces nothing 10 pass that test fails
Every row throws, in every run 10 pass 10 fail
z.test.js prints a line in the run over layers 10 pass 10 fail
The test of z.test.js is skipped in the run over layers 10 pass 10 fail
A stated count is wrong that test fails
A stated answer is wrong 10 fail

Not done.

  • One run over layers for the ten cases as ten test files. The scan is one set for a run, and every program of the run is compiled with it (src/aot/load/replaced_by_tests.rs). A member that one case replaces can then close the row that shows a fault of another case: Object.prototype.valueOf closes the rows of join and Array.prototype.toString on a list, which Array.prototype.join has to close by itself in its own case.
  • The three runs of a case at once. The processors of a bucket are busy, so the file would take its time from the files beside it. With the debug build five tests run at once, and each build holds 1.0 to 1.5 GB.
  • An assertion on the log of the scan. BUN_JSC_logAOTPhaseTimes=1 adds 20% to a run over layers.

Other open work on this file. #47605 moves the file's content, unchanged, to test/aot/tests-replace-members.ts, and two test files run five cases each. This diff touches the tables and the body of the loop only, so it applies there as it is.

Also run. bun fmt --check --plugin=prettier-plugin-organize-imports reports nothing for the file. tsc reports no error in it. the-default-time-limit-never-lowers-what-the-runner-gave.test.ts, the-folder-of-a-program-has-a-short-name.test.ts, ci-unpacks-the-tools-of-the-engine-for-every-test-that-imports-them.test.ts and tests-outside-the-folders-of-the-compiler-run-on-every-lane.test.ts pass.

… other classes, and build the one-program runs without the modules behind process.stdout

The run as one program gets a copy of the project that prints through
console.log. A program that reads process.stdout is built with the modules of
Bun's own code behind that stream: 127 units, not 60. The plain run and the
run over layers keep the project as it was.

The file states what plain Bun prints: an answer for each of the 58 rows, and
for each case the rows that call a replaced member. Every run has to print
exactly that, pass the tests of both test files and exit with 0. The compiled
run without layers has to say that it is one program.

The time limit of a test is 120 s, was 240 s.

Status: ready for a maintainer. The file passes on the first try on its 3 CI lanes at the head commit f584dc8 (build 137510). The 28 files that are red in that build are other files. They are red without this PR too: the same 28 are red in build 137474 and in the last builds of merged PRs.

Times of the file in CI:

Lane Build 137474, main's file Build 137510, this PR
debian 13 x64-asan 400 s 163.0 s
debian 13 x64 190 s 64.2 s
debian 13 aarch64 134 s 42.1 s

The columns do not compare one to one: the runner gives a test file that a PR changes a process of its own, with more tests at once than in a bucket.

Times on one machine with 12 CPUs:

  • Before: bun bd test test/aot/built-in-functions-where-tests-replace-members-of-other-classes.test.ts on main at b9f2ec3 takes 371 and 375 s, with 10 passes.
  • After: the same command at f584dc8 takes 263 and 250 s, with 10 passes.
  • Release build of b9f2ec3: bun test on the file takes 15.4 s before and 10.1 s after.

The PR body has the other numbers and what each run must print now.

Explanation

The title names the test file and the two changes it makes: keeping process.stdout out of the one-program builds and stating what each row prints. The raw summary and PR objectives both describe this console.log copy for the one-program run and the stated expected rows, so the title reflects the main change. It is long at 16 words and 166 characters, but it is specific and on topic.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the repository template in substance. It has a problem statement, a fix section, and a detailed verification section with timings, CI evidence, and the assertion changes. The template asks for "What does this PR do?" and "How did you verify your code works?". The author covers both, under the headings Problem, Fix, Background, Downsides, and Notes. The verification content is thorough: local debug and release timings, a four-CPU bucket run, a fault-injection table, and the lint and type checks. The main gap is that the template headings are not used verbatim. The description is long and dense, and it has a few sections that a reviewer must read closely. Those gaps are minor and do not block the check.

Exercise the Object.prototype.format replacement in a row.

The names-opened-on-object-prototype case replaces Object.prototype.format, but no row reads format. Its calls and answers cover only toJSON. A regression in how format resolves on plain objects would leave every row, and therefore all three run comparisons, unchanged.

Add a row that calls format when it exists. The baseline answer is none, because the other cases do not define format. Record its call only in the names-opened-on-object-prototype case. Add the row to rows and to answers in the same position, because the printed order follows answers.

Add rows for the other four replaced members in statics-and-globals.

The statics-and-globals case replaces Date.now, Math.random, JSON.parse, Object.keys, and globalThis.setTimeout. Its calls map lists only Object.keys. No row calls the other four members. A build that ignores those four replacements prints the same lines and passes.

Add one row for each member. The rows run in every case, so their expected answers apply to all cases. Only the calls entries for statics-and-globals need the new members. Each new row makes exactly one call to its member and returns a deterministic value.

The copy that prints through console.log is compiled as one program. Plain
Bun now runs it first, as it runs the project, and has to print the same
stated lines.

On the two suggestions of the review, rows that call format, Date.now, Math.random, JSON.parse and setTimeout: not taken.

  • The rows are uses of built-in functions on values that the program makes, and a case replaces members of other classes. format and the four statics are the members that no row reaches. The case states that such a replacement changes no row. format is the added name that no built-in function looks up. toJSON beside it is the name that JSON.stringify looks up.
  • A call of a replaced static has its own tests. test/aot/aot-flag-runs-from-source.test.ts ("a spy replaces a member that a program may replace, and a function of the global object") calls Date.now, Math.random and JSON.parse behind a spy. test/aot/the-library-that-bun-holds-compiled-is-the-lowest-layer.test.ts replaces Date.now and globalThis.setTimeout over layers.
  • A name added to Object.prototype that code reads: test/aot/what-tests-replace-is-known-before-the-build.test.ts ("members of built-in objects, and names that they get").
  • A new row changes the program of all ten cases. This PR keeps the project that plain Bun and the run over layers run as it is on main, byte for byte.
