Problem

  • test/aot/an-entry-stored-in-require-cache-under-the-name-of-a-node-module.test.ts takes 279 s on debian 13 x64-asan (build #137158). Seven builds hold over 99% of its processor time.
  • It checks one printed line of each project and compares the rest sorted. A Bun that accepts --aot and compiles nothing passes 4 of 7 tests.

Fix

  • Each project states every line that its test file prints and each result by name. Plain bun test must print its banner and exactly those lines, and each compiled run must match.
  • Each compiled run must say how it is built. With the test files from disk, it must name its stand-in.
  • The executable test checks the error lines of the build and the stderr of the executable.
  • Verified: bun bd test: 7 pass in 254 s, 272 s and 268 s (main: 246 s, 254 s, 272 s). CI: the file passes on its three lanes.

Background

  • bun test --aot compiles the test files and their imports: as one program, in layers over Bun's own library, or with the test files read from disk.
  • A build that does not see the test files reads a stand-in, which names what they name.
  • Considered one build per way for both projects: 136 s to 157 s locally. Rejected: both test files store under fs, so each store hides a build that misses the other.

Downsides

  • The file is not faster: no two of its builds compile the same project in the same way.
  • The stated lines must follow any change to what plain bun test prints.
Notes

How it was measured. A debug build with ASAN (bun bd) of 3bf1a06 on Linux x64: 12 processors of a virtual machine, 15 GB. bun test has five concurrent tests under way in such a build. Processor time is the user and system time of the command and of every process that it starts. The host takes processors away at times, so the wall time moves from run to run.

The whole file, bun bd test <file>.

File Result Wall Processor time Longest test
main, run 1 7 pass 272.3 s 3,076 s 252 s
main, run 2 7 pass 245.9 s 2,796 s 225 s
main, run 3 7 pass 253.9 s 2,889 s 231 s
this PR, first commit, run 1 7 pass 253.8 s 2,897 s 232 s
this PR, first commit, run 2 7 pass 272.3 s 2,940 s 245 s
this PR, second commit 7 pass 268.4 s 2,981 s 248 s

The longest test is a build in layers beside four other builds. Its limit in a debug build is 270 s. This PR does not change that.

CI. Build 137252, the second commit. The file passed on its three lanes at the first attempt.

Lane Main's code, build #137158 This PR, build 137252
debian 13 x64-asan 279 s 87 s
debian 13 x64 42 s 41 s
debian 13 aarch64 24 s 31 s

The two columns are not the same way of running the file, so the 87 s are not a gain of this PR. In build #137158 the file ran in a parallel batch: 40 files, 7 at a time on x64-asan. A file that a PR modifies runs in a process of its own, in the group "files that build many executables": 3 files at a time on x64-asan, 2 on the other lanes. The seven builds cost what they cost before.

Build 137252 is red because of 28 other test files, which the CI report marks as red on main too.

Where the time goes. Each command alone, one at a time, in the debug build: wall time, and processor time in brackets.

Command First project Second project
plain bun test --isolate 0.8 s (0.9 s) 0.5 s (0.5 s)
--aot, as one program 44.6 s (289 s) 49.5 s (327 s)
--aot, in layers 106.2 s (677 s) 96.1 s (647 s)
--aot, with the test files from disk 67.8 s (519 s) 76.3 s (564 s)
bun build --compile --aot main.cjs 18.0 s (42 s)

The seven builds take 3,064 s of processor time. Plain bun test now runs once per project: the six plain runs of main take 4 s, and the two of this PR take 1.4 s. Each of the six compiled runs is one project in one way: none repeats.

The design that was not taken: one build per way for both projects. The two projects became the folders c1/ and c2/ of one project. It ran once plain and once in each way: three compiled runs for six. Each test still compared every line, result and form of its own project. Four runs of bun bd test: 135.6 s, 144.7 s, 150.6 s and 156.7 s, with 1,455 s to 1,571 s of processor time. That is 43% less wall time and 48% less processor time on average.

It was rejected because a build decides for its whole run what require.cache may answer:

  • find_library_modules_stored_in_cache (src/aot/modules/evicted.rs:845) collects the modules that any file of the run stores under. spelled.test.js and one.test.js both store under fs.
  • stores_entry_of_library (src/aot/load/replaced_by_tests.rs:650) keeps the lists of how the test files load each file only if some test file of the run stores such an entry. The tests of the second project are about those lists.
  • An experiment shows it. A third test file writes a file at run time that stores under fs, so the build never sees that store. Alone, compiled as one program, the run prints Cannot store an entry under 'fs' in require.cache. In one project with spelled.test.js, the same run prints stored number, as plain Bun does.

So with a shared build, a Bun that misses the store of one of the two test files passes where it fails today. #47605 adds the same shape as a harness (foldersOfOneRun). Its comment says that projects which differ in what the build has to find "are told apart only alone". These two differ.

What the new assertions find. Each row ran against main's file and against this PR's file.

Fault Main's file This PR
A Bun whose bun test --aot compiles nothing (1.4.3-canary.1+367d939d9, USE_SYSTEM_BUN=1 bun test) 4 pass, 3 fail 0 pass, 7 fail. The four tests that pass on main fail here on the form of the run alone
The variable BUN_AOT_TEST_FILES_FROM_DISK has no effect (misspelled in the environment of the test) the test passes in 47 s the test fails: the form lacks the line of the stand-in
The fixture loses its store under fs/promises, so plain and compiled print fs/promises: function function the test passes in 44 s the test fails in 0.8 s, at the plain run, and shows the two lines
The test file of the second project prints one more empty line the test passes in 42 s the test fails in 0.5 s, at the plain run

Assertions, before and after.

Subject Before After
Stdout of plain bun test One line of each project, with toContain The whole stdout, line by line: the banner bun test <version>, every line of the project as a literal, the final newline
Results of plain bun test First project: no (fail). Second project: nothing Each test by name, in order. No error line. Exit code 0
A compiled run Lines and results equal those of plain, after a sort. Empty lines and lines that begin with bun test dropped. Exit code equal Stdout, results, error lines and exit code equal those of plain, in order, nothing dropped
Form of the build layers 2, in run() of the harness. Nothing for the other two ways one program | test files 1, layers 2 | test files 1 | to a program 1. For test files from disk also the line that names the stand-in
The build of the executable expect(built.exitCode).toBe(0) Error lines and exit code in one comparison
The run of the executable stdout, then the exit code stdout, stderr and exit code in one comparison

expect() calls: 20 before, 16 after. One call compares a whole run.

The word TestRunShowsStandIn:1. A run with the test files from disk now has it in BUN_DEBUG_TEST_AOT_WORDS. It only prints (src/runtime/cli/run_compiled.rs:93): the form line and the text of the stand-in. A build with the word took 57.4 s and 75.0 s for the two projects, and without it 67.8 s and 76.3 s.

The second commit answers two review findings. The first commit dropped empty lines and lines that begin with bun test from stdout, as main does. It also stated standIn: false for the runs that cannot print a stand-in, which no run could fail. Now the stdout is compared whole, and the line of the stand-in is part of the form of the one run that prints it.

Not changed. The text of every fixture and the seven test titles. The tests stay test.concurrent. raiseDefaultTimeout(120_000) stays: one build takes longer than the 5 s default on every lane. test/expected-durations.json comes from CI runs, and this PR does not edit it.

Also run. prettier --check and oxlint on the file. tsc reports nothing for the file.

Status: ready for review. The diff is green: the file passes on its three CI lanes (debian 13 x64-asan, x64 and aarch64) in build 137252. That build is red because of 28 other test files, which the CI report marks as red on main too, and none of them is this file.

How it was checked:

  • CI of the second commit (build 137252): the file passed at the first attempt in 87 s on debian 13 x64-asan, 41 s on x64 and 31 s on aarch64. A file that a PR modifies runs in a process of its own and not in its parallel batch, so these times do not compare with the 279 s of main.
  • bun bd test test/aot/an-entry-stored-in-require-cache-under-the-name-of-a-node-module.test.ts with a debug build with ASAN on 12 processors: 7 pass in 254 s, 272 s and 268 s. Main's file: 7 pass in 246 s, 254 s and 272 s.
  • USE_SYSTEM_BUN=1 bun test of the file with a Bun whose bun test --aot compiles nothing (1.4.3-canary.1+367d939d9): main's file passes 4 of its 7 tests. This file passes none.
  • The file is not faster. Its time is seven builds, and no two of them compile the same project in the same way. The PR body has the numbers, and the design with shared builds that was measured and rejected.

Walkthrough

The test now caches plain Bun test results for each project and compares them with three AOT modes. It checks run-form output, disk test-file stand-in reporting, and executable build and runtime results.

Nitpick Compare every stdout line in the printed assertion.

169-169: Trivial · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Compare every stdout line in the printed assertion.

The filter on line 169 drops every empty line and every line that starts with bun test . A compiled run that prints an extra blank line, or an extra bun test line, still matches the plain run. The order-sensitive comparisons on lines 188 and 191 therefore cannot detect that output.

Narrow the normalization:

  • Remove only the terminal newline before split("\n"). Do not keep the final empty string. It would add "" to printed, and no expected array contains that entry.
  • Stop dropping empty lines.
  • Remove the version banner by its exact printed text, not by the bun test prefix. Project lines that begin with that prefix then remain in the comparison.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.

Beyond the inline finding, I also checked that the env knobs the test sets are read by src (TestRunShowsStandIn: at src/runtime/cli/run_compiled.rs:93, the stand-in path at src/runtime/cli/test_command.rs:1995), that Map.prototype.getOrInsertComputed is already used by sibling test/aot files, and that the memoized plain run's using dir is disposed only after the awaited run completes inside the callback — none of those are issues.

Extended reasoning...

The PR rewrites a single AOT test file to assert exact printed lines, result lines, build form and stand-in output per project and per compiled way; no runtime code and no security-sensitive surface is touched. One inline finding (a standIn: false assertion that cannot fail for runs lacking the debug word) stands; the remaining concerns examined were ruled out from source.

…d-in only where a run names it

test/aot/an-entry-stored-in-require-cache-under-the-name-of-a-node-module.test.ts:

- The stdout of a run is compared line by line: the banner of `bun test`,
the lines of the project and the final newline. Empty lines and lines
that begin with `bun test ` are no longer dropped.
- The form of a run with the test files from disk holds the line that
names its stand-in. The other runs print no such line, so the `standIn`
  field is gone.

The finding about the printed filter is addressed in ceae9cc. The stdout of each run is now compared whole, line by line: the banner (bun test ${Bun.version_with_sha}), the lines of the project, and the final newline. Empty lines and lines that begin with bun test are no longer dropped.

LGTM — the second commit drops the unobservable standIn: false field and the remaining assertions now all correspond to lines the runs actually print.

What was reviewed:

  • Checked form extraction against src/runtime/cli/run_compiled.rs: log_form_of_test_run prints only when a TestRun* word is set, which every way now sets (including TestRunShowsStandIn:1), and set_stand_in prints the .js stand-in path under BUN_AOT_TESTS_NAME_WHAT_THEY_USE (test_command.rs:1995), so each pattern in form is reachable and absent on a plain run.
  • Checked the banner line: Bun.version_with_sha carries the leading v (node_process.rs:188) and bunExe() is process.execPath, so host and spawned versions agree.
  • Checked the shared plain-run cache: using dir is scoped inside the getOrInsertComputed callback and the cached object is only spread, never mutated; getOrInsertComputed is already used across test/aot.
  • Checked that the stand-in text echoed to stderr contains no error-prefixed or (pass)/(fail) lines that could leak into errors/results.
Extended reasoning...

The PR rewrites one test file, test/aot/an-entry-stored-in-require-cache-under-the-name-of-a-node-module.test.ts, replacing sorted/filtered output comparison with exact per-project stdout and result tables plus a per-way build-form assertion, and sharing the plain bun test run across the three concurrent tests of each project; no runtime code changes. It touches no security-sensitive surface. The one finding from the prior review (an assertion that could not fail) was addressed in commit ceae9cc, the env knobs and stderr lines the test depends on were traced to their printing sites in src/, the file is not under a CODEOWNERS entry, and the only third-party reviews are COMMENTED, not CHANGES_REQUESTED. The hunt ran to dry_streak with no findings.
