Part of #13451

Problem

  • karma start fails with Error: No provider for "proxies"! (Resolving: webServer -> proxies). Its injector reads /* token */ comments from fn.toString().
  • The runtime prints each module before JavaScriptCore loads it, and the lexer drops comments (src/js_parser/lexer.rs:1917): function (/* config.proxies */ proxies) becomes function(proxies).

Fix

  • For a module the runtime loads, the parser keeps the text of a parameter list of plain names that holds a comment, and the printer writes it.
  • Other lists, setters and all bun build output print as before.
  • Verified: test/bundler/transpiler/runtime-transpiler.test.ts (12 of 17 new tests fail on main), and unmodified karma 6.4.4 prints server started.
  • Self-reviewed twice: 22 concerns raised, 16 addressed, 6 in part (Notes).

Background

  • The text is in a side table on the Ast. The printer writes it only if each parameter still has its name.
  • The on-disk cache of printed modules goes to version 52, which drops entries without the comments.
  • parser: preserve comments inside function parameter lists #36705 (replaced by this) put a comment slot on every G::Arg: every parameter grew and bun build output changed.

Downsides

  • Code that reads toString() without stripping comments now sees them, as on Node. elysia 1.4.30 (npm latest) then loses the context of a handler (/* c */ ctx) => ...: 200 where it set 401 (2.0.0-rc.1 is fine).
  • Still failing: bun build and --compile output, and karma starts but answers no request (http.Server.listen(netServer) binds a new port: node: server.listen(handle) takes the handle of a listening net.Server #47725).
  • A function without such a comment costs 8 more instructions, a kept list about 2,800 (Notes).
Notes

What is kept, and what is not

  • Kept: the text between the parentheses when it is a list of names with a comma between them, ... before the last at most, ASCII whitespace and at least one ASCII comment. Functions, arrow functions, methods, constructors, generators and getters. .js, .mjs, .cjs, .ts, .tsx, -e, bun repl, test files, workers, onLoad plugins.
  • Not kept (printed as before): a list with a default value, a destructuring pattern, a type, a decorator, a TypeScript parameter property or this parameter. A comment or a name that is not ASCII. A comment outside the parentheses.
  • Not kept, by rule:
    • The list of a setter. JavaScriptCore refuses set x(v,) {}, which a list as written can end with.
    • A line comment that starts with //# or //@. JavaScriptCore reads sourceURL= and sourceMappingURL= from it (Lexer.cpp, scanSingleLineComment).
    • A comment that starts with ! (/*!, //!). The printer writes it by itself, into the body of the function, as before.
    • A list whose text holds importOriginal, importActual or requireActual. mentionsOriginalModule (src/jsc/bindings/BunPlugin.cpp) takes these words in the text of a mock.module() factory as a mention of the original module. test/internal/source-lints/mock-module-words.test.ts holds the two word lists equal.
  • Node keeps more. It returns the source text, so it also keeps the comments of a list with a default value (didi's /* token */ name = default) and, in a .ts file, of a list with types (function (/* config.proxies */ proxies , ...)). Those lists print as before here.
  • A line of the source ends with \n in what is printed (Node keeps \r\n).
  • bun build --compile --aot answers fn.toString() from the source on main already (docs/compiler/compatibility.mdx). Its error quotes print functions as bun run does, so print_as_run takes the table too (test/aot/parallel/errors/a-parameter-list-that-holds-a-comment-is-quoted-as-it-is-written.js).

Mechanism

  • Lexer: last_comment_end holds where the last scanned comment ends. has_comment_after(loc) is one compare. The field is part of the lexer snapshot, so the compare is exact after a backtrack. That changes no output: the recorder decides from the text.
  • Parser: before the ) of a function, and once an arrow function is confirmed, that compare decides if the cold record_parameter_list_as_written runs. It stores what bun_ast::parameter_list_as_written::text_to_keep returns. The option keep_parameter_lists_as_written is set where the module loader sets import_meta_glob, in the AOT transpile, and in the REPL.
  • Printer: print_fn_args tests one pointer (Options::parameter_lists_as_written, None when the table is empty). The cold print_parameter_list_as_written checks name and count against the parameters, then writes the text with a source mapping for the ( and for each name.
  • Readers of function text in Bun:
    • The expect.extend hint reads the names of such a list with the same scanner.
    • The bun:test fixtures reader uses the real parser. It sees no new text: a list with a /*! comment is not kept.
    • The mock.module() reader searches for the three words above.

Tests

  • runtime-transpiler.test.ts: karma's four token lists with di's two regular expressions, 37 kinds of function by 18 lists in .cjs and .ts (558 rows each), 9 ways to load a module, lists that print as before, three syntax errors before a comment, positions after a list of several lines with \n, \r\n and \r, a parameter renamed by the React Compiler, and bun build --no-bundle, Bun.Transpiler and Bun.build for both targets.
  • source-positions-corpus.ts: four programs with kept lists, and one above an inline snapshot. Coverage lines, stack traces, call sites and previews are the same as on main.
  • repl.test.ts, mock-module.test.ts, vitest-flavor.test.ts, expect-extend.test.js, transpiler-cache.test.ts: one test or more each.
  • Removed each of these in turn and rebuilt. Each removal fails a test: the parser option, the comment requirement, the mock words, the //# rule, the ! rule, the ASCII rule, the setter rule, the printer's name check, the printer's count check, the line end conversion, the source mapping of the (, the source mappings of the names.
  • Unit tests of the scanner run under Miri (bun run rust:miri -p bun_ast parameter_list_as_written, 10 tests).
  • Release builds: all of test/bundler/transpiler, test/js/bun/sourcemap, test/cli/test/coverage.test.ts, test/js/bun/test, test/js/bun/repl, test/js/node/util, test/js/node/module, test/js/bun/plugin, test/js/bun/resolve. No test fails on the branch that passes on main. test/aot/run-parallel.ts passes the new program. test/aot/tools/same-output.ts: 289 programs identical.

Measurements (release builds of main cee9dd9 and of this branch, x64 Linux)

  • No-comment path, from objdump: parse_fn +3 instructions (mov, cmp, jg), parse_paren_expr +1 for its new argument and +3 once an arrow function is confirmed, print_fn_args +4 for the Bun target and +0 for other targets (same instructions), scan_comment_text +3.
  • User-mode instructions (perf_event_open, like perf stat -e instructions:u, 7 interleaved runs, spread under 0.003%) of bun build --no-bundle --target=bun on 60,000 functions: 1,052,313,514 to 1,052,793,611 (+8.0 per function, +0.046%). 60,000 arrow functions: +13.0 each. Two comments in each body: +3.0 per comment.
  • Loading a module of 60,000 functions that each hold a kept list (BUN_JSC_useJIT=0, spread 0.05%): 2,497,426,105 to 2,663,735,394 instructions (+6.7%, 2,772 per list), peak RSS 192.7 to 195.1 MB. Arrow functions: 4,338 per list, peak RSS 178.3 to 192.0 MB. The same module with no comment: +0.010%, inside the spread, peak RSS 185.7 and 185.6 MB.
  • One karma start (gdb breakpoint counts, cache off): 3,142 functions parsed, 5,604 comments, 10 cold calls in the parser, 8 lists kept, 4,438 functions printed, 134 cold calls in the printer. lodash, body-parser and glob (901 functions): 0 cold calls, 0 table entries.
  • Sizes: G::Arg 88 to 88, G::Fn 88 to 88, E::Arrow 32 to 32, Lexer 344 to 344, LexerSnapshot 240 to 248, Ast 1176 to 1264, js_printer::Options 216 to 224 bytes.
  • Release binary: text 140,286,972 to 140,281,852 bytes (size). The new functions are 5.5 KB, and five bundler functions no longer inline BundledAst::to_ast.
  • Cache: one karma start on a version 51 cache rewrites the 102 entries it loads (1,287,124 to 1,287,419 bytes). The second run writes nothing.
  • Other printer users: 0 of 9,876 outputs differ. That is 1,646 files, each through Bun.Transpiler and bun build --no-bundle for both targets, bun build --target=bun, and bun build --target=browser --minify. One more file overflows the parser's stack and reports another position on every run, on main too.

Who sees another toString() text

  • In 118 installed packages (3,557 files, 30,970 functions) a scan with a port of the rule finds 35 kept lists, in ajv, argparse, async, commander, minimatch and zod. On the two builds, 12 of 3,071 functions that the exports of 19 of these packages reach have another text. They are commented-out parameters and notes (text/*, width */), not tokens.

  • elysia 1.4.30 (sucrose) takes the first parameter of a handler or hook from toString(). With a comment in a plain list it reads /* c */ ctx as the name and infers that nothing of the context is used. Node 26.3 gives the same result in every row. 2.0.0-rc.1 is right on all three.

    elysia 1.4.30, (/* c */ ctx) => ... main this branch Node 26.3
    handler sets ctx.set.status = 401 401 200 200
    onBeforeHandle reads ctx.headers.authorization 401 500 500
    handler reads ctx.query.a 200 500 500
POST handler returns JSON.stringify(ctx.body) {"k":1} empty empty
    handler sets ctx.cookie.sid.value 200, set-cookie 500 500
onAfterHandle sets ctx.set.headers["x-after"] header sent no header no header

These keep main's result on 1.4.30: new Elysia({ aot: false }), a typed or destructured parameter, a comment before the parentheses.

Self-review

  • Round 1 found three defects, fixed before this PR opened: a setter with a kept list that ends in a comma did not load, a //# sourceURL= comment in a kept list renamed the frames of its module, and importOriginal in a comment of a nested list made a mock factory load the original module.
  • Round 2 found two defects in the first push, fixed in the second:
    • A debug assertion aborted where a ( is missing before a comment (function (a /* c */) {} as a statement). Release builds reported the syntax error. Now every build does.
    • A /*! comment in a kept list made the fixtures reader accept aroundEach((/*! c */ runTest, context) => runTest()), which main refuses. Such a list is no longer kept.
  • Also from round 2: bun repl keeps these lists too, last_comment_end is a Loc (the mordant lint flagged the as u32), the scanner refuses a b, ,a and anything after a rest name, a source lint ties the mock words to the C++ reader, and a corpus program pins the source mapping of the (.
  • In part, and handed to separate changes:
  • In part: no report is filed with elysia 1.x. 2.0.0-rc.1 has the fix.
  • Not done: a link to another open PR that also raises the cache version. The one that lands second takes the next number.

In a module that the runtime loads, the parser keeps the source text of
a parameter list that holds a comment and only plain names. The printer
writes that text in place of the list. Function.prototype.toString()
then returns `function (/* config.proxies */ proxies)`, which is where
the injector of karma reads its tokens.

A list with a default value, a pattern or a type, the list of a setter,
and what `bun build` prints are printed as before. The transpiler cache
version goes to 52.

Status

Reproduced with unmodified karma@6.4.4:

bun i karma@6.4.4 karma-jasmine karma-chrome-launcher jasmine-core
bun ./node_modules/karma/bin/karma start
  • A build of main (cee9dd9) fails with Error: No provider for "proxies"! (Resolving: webServer -> proxies).
  • A build of this branch prints Karma v6.4.4 server started.
  • test/bundler/transpiler/runtime-transpiler.test.ts: 12 of the 17 new tests fail on main. All 17 pass on this branch.
  • Karma then answers no request until http.Server.listen(net.Server) takes the given server: node: server.listen(handle) takes the handle of a listening net.Server #47725.

CI on 43f962a (build 136825, finished): no test that this PR adds or changes is in the failure list of any lane, and the lint checks are green (clippy, Miri, mordant, format, source lints). 40 test files fail: 39 test/aot/* files and test/bundler/compile-aot-size.test.ts. Each of them also fails on main in builds 136408, 136389, 136333, 136296 and 136252.

Open for a maintainer: the effect on elysia 1.4.x, with three choices, in this review thread.

PR: #47678

- The printer writes a comment that starts with `!` by itself, into the
body of the function. A parameter list that holds one is printed as
before, so the fixtures reader of bun:test sees what it sees on main.
- Where a `(` is missing before a comment, the recorder returns. A build
with assertions reports the syntax error and does not abort.
- `bun repl` sets the parser option and gives the table to the printer.
- The scanner refuses two names with no comma between them, a comma with
no name before it, and anything after a rest name.
- `last_comment_end` is a `Loc`, set with a checked conversion.
- A source lint holds the words of `READ_BY_MOCK_MODULE` equal to the
  words that `mentionsOriginalModule` searches for.

Walkthrough

The parser records eligible commented parameter lists in the AST. Runtime printer paths use the retained text when it matches the parsed parameter names. Tests cover runtime output, formatter behavior, cache hits, error reporting, and source positions.

Parameter-List Preservation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Capture eligible parameter lists
src/ast/ast_result.rs, src/ast/lib.rs, src/ast/parameter_list_as_written.rs, src/js_parser/lexer.rs, src/js_parser/p.rs, src/js_parser/parse/*
The parser tracks comments and records eligible source-written parameter lists in the AST. The new parser accepts plain names, optional rest syntax, ASCII whitespace, and ASCII comments.
Print retained text in runtime paths
src/aot/lower/transpiled.rs, src/bundler/aot/services.rs, src/bundler/transpiler.rs, src/js_printer/lib.rs, src/runtime/cli/repl.rs, src/jsc/RuntimeTranspilerCache.rs
Runtime parser and printer paths pass retained parameter-list text to the printer. The printer uses the text when its names match the current identifier bindings. The transpiler cache format version changes from 51 to 52.
Use parsed names in formatter integrations
src/runtime/test_runner/expect.rs, test/internal/source-lints/mock-module-words.test.ts, test/js/bun/test/expect-extend.test.js, test/js/bun/test/mock/mock-module.test.ts, test/js/bun/test/vitest-flavor.test.ts
The custom matcher formatter extracts parameter names from source text and keeps its prior fallback when extraction is unavailable. Tests cover matcher hints, mock-module detection, and callback parameters.
Validate runtime output and source positions

Explanation

The title "transpiler: print a parameter list that holds a comment as it is written" matches the main change. The PR keeps the text of plain-name parameter lists that contain a comment for modules the runtime transpiles, and the printer writes that text. The title is specific, single-sentence, and avoids vague terms. It does not cover the many supporting changes (cache version bump, lexer tracking, printer and REPL wiring), which is expected for a title.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the repository template, which has two sections: "What does this PR do?" and "How did you verify your code works?". The author gives a problem statement, a fix, and background, so the first section is covered. The verification section names specific tests, a failing-on-main count, a manual karma check, removal-based checks, Miri runs, release-build test runs, and benchmarks. The description also has a long Notes section with downsides and known regressions, including an elysia 1.4.30 behavior change. The template's headings are not used verbatim, and the "What does this PR do?" content is spread across Problem, Fix, and Background. Even so, the required information is present and mostly complete, so this check passes.

Nitpick Add a check that the second run reads the cache entry.

316-319: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Quick win

Add a check that the second run reads the cache entry.

The second run passes whether it reads the cache or reparses. Reparsing prints the same text and rewrites the same cache slot, so newCacheCount() stays at 0. A broken cache read path therefore goes unnoticed, even though the test name says the output comes from the cache.

To confirm the read, damage a section of the stored entry that the reader accepts, then assert that the second run leaves those bytes unchanged. Sourcemap damage does not alter the printed parameter list, so the printed-output assertion still holds. The existing forEachDamagedEntry helper uses this method, but it is scoped to the cached sourcemap with a corrupted body block. Move it to a shared scope or inline a single damage case. Before you do, confirm that this fixture's entry contains a sourcemap section.

…cache hit

A run that does not take a cache entry writes the entry again, and the
count of entries stays the same. The test now changes bytes in the window
stream of the entry's source map, which a cache hit does not read, and
checks that the second run leaves them as they are.

The finding on test/cli/run/transpiler-cache.test.ts holds. A run that does not take the cache entry writes the entry again, so the count of entries stays the same.

43f962a changes bytes in the window stream of the entry's source map after the first run, and checks that the second run leaves them as they are. A cache hit does not read those bytes. I checked the other direction with a debug build that does not read the cache (no BUN_DEBUG_ENABLE_RESTORE_FROM_TRANSPILER_CACHE): it writes the entry again and the new check fails.

Beyond the inline findings, I also checked whether a TypeScript speculative arrow parse can leave a stale parameter_lists_as_written entry after a backtrack: it can, but the key is the expression's own (/async location, so the entry is only read if a function or arrow is finally printed at that exact location, and a re-parse records the same text under the same key. The two Loc::EMPTY keys in js_printer/lib.rs are the synthetic HMR module-wrapper functions, which never have a kept list, and last_comment_end is part of the lexer snapshot so has_comment_after stays exact after restore.

Extended reasoning...

The change adds a side table on the Ast, a byte-level parameter-list scanner, a lexer field, a parser option, and a printer path that emits the original parameter text for runtime-loaded modules, plus a RuntimeTranspilerCache version bump to 52. It touches no auth, crypto or injection surface; the output text is restricted to ASCII identifiers, commas, whitespace and comments, and //#///@ and /*! comments are refused. Two confirmed findings about behavioural divergence (Elysia 1.4.x handlers, and bun run versus bun build --target=bun) are posted inline, so a human still needs to weigh the product trade-off.

Findings marked 🟡 are optional suggestions and need no follow-up push.

🔴 Elysia 1.4.x apps that write a comment inside a handler's parameter list can answer 200 where a guard set 401 after this merges, which the base does not do. Once the runtime enables the kept lists at src/bundler/transpiler.rs:1634, fn.toString() of (/* c */ ctx) => ... carries the comment and Elysia's source analysis loses the context, so set.status writes are dropped; the PR text lists this as a downside. This follows from the stated purpose (matching Node). Fix: ship a general safeguard with the feature rather than nothing: an opt-out (env feature flag or runtime option) that restores the base printing and a release note naming the affected Elysia versions, so an auth guard does not silently stop working. [also at: src/js_printer/lib.rs:2528 - Elysia 1.4.x users (npm latest) whose route handler has a comment in a plain parameter list, e.g. (/* c */ ctx) => ..., get a 200 where the handler set 401 after merging; on the base branch the handler works.]

Why this was flagged

An Elysia 1.4.30 app (npm latest per the PR description) defines a handler or guard as (/* c */ ctx) => { ctx.set.status = 401 } and loads it through bun run, which sets keep_parameter_lists_as_written at src/bundler/transpiler.rs:1634. The printer then emits the comment inside the parentheses (src/js_printer/lib.rs:2523-2528 and print_parameter_list_as_written), so String(handler) holds /* c */. Elysia's sucrose reads toString() to decide whether a handler touches the context; with the comment it no longer finds ctx, and the response is 200 instead of the 401 the guard set. On the base branch the comment is dropped (src/js_parser/lexer.rs:1917) and the same app answers 401. The PR description itself records '200 where it set 401' for elysia 1.4.30 and says 2.0.0-rc.1 is fine; no opt-out, flag or note is added by the diff, so an operator upgrading Bun gets the auth change silently.

Verification: normal — acknowledged in diff: the PR description's "Downsides" section states exactly this ("elysia 1.4.30 ... loses the context of a handler (/* c */ ctx) => ...: 200 where it set 401"); 2.0.0-rc.1 is unaffected. conflicts with stated purpose: the only complete fix (not printing the comment) undoes the Node-parity the PR exists for, so this is a trade-off, not an oversight.

The measurement is right, and the description states it. The PR does not choose for the maintainers, so I leave this thread open for them.

Facts, from runs on builds of main and of this branch:

  • elysia 1.4.30 (npm latest): a handler or hook written (/* c */ ctx) => ... loses its inferred context. The table is in the description (Notes, "Who sees another toString() text").
  • Node 26.3 gives the same result as this branch in every row of that table. Main differs from Node because it drops the comment.
  • elysia 2.0.0-rc.1 is right on main, on this branch and on Node.
  • On 1.4.30 these keep the result of main: a typed or destructured parameter, a comment before the parentheses, new Elysia({ aot: false }).

Two rules of .claude/docs/landing-prs.md point in different directions here: "Never silently break existing users" (a changed default goes behind a flag) and "Ship no speculative surface: no options nobody asked for". The choices I see:

  1. Ship it as it is, with a release note that names elysia 1.4.x.
  2. Add an opt-out. That is an environment flag, the flag in the cache key of the runtime transpiler (the cache holds the printed text), a test and a line in the docs.
  3. Hold the PR until elysia 1.4.x has a release that reads the parameter name past a comment.

I added no flag without a maintainer's word on it.
