Problem

  • await Bun.file(path).text() decodes on the JS thread: 32 MiB of text blocks the event loop for 31 ms (fs.promises.readFile: 2 ms).
  • The POSIX read job returns bytes, and its completion decodes them (src/runtime/webcore/Blob.rs:2385). No issue reports this.

Fix

  • For .text(), the read job decodes on the work pool, in ReadFile::on_finish. The gap is 1.5 ms. A batch of 2,000 64 KiB files takes 16 ms (main: 67 ms).
  • text_from_owned_bytes replaces the Temporary arm of to_string_with_bytes: same string and errors (one test-hook exception: Notes), no added allocation, job or syscall.
  • Verified: test/js/bun/util/bun-file.test.ts (five thread tests fail on main).
  • Self-reviewed: 16 concerns raised, 15 addressed. Rejected: a review request to Remove libuv on Windows #42819's author (the assignee's call).

Background

Downsides

  • Overlapping reads decode in parallel: twelve 32 MiB reads peak at 1,028 MB (main: 675) with 52 % more CPU, as readFile does. This needs a maintainer's yes.
  • Decodes take work-pool threads. Under a 1-CPU quota a server's p99 is up to 1.8 times worse. A busy Worker moves another VM's fs.promises.stat p99 from 4 to 77 ms.
  • Not covered: Windows, S3, fetch bodies, .json(), .formData(). Single reads of 256 KiB to 1 MiB take up to 10 % longer.
Notes

How it was measured. Linux x64, 12 CPUs, release builds (LTO) with one toolchain. "main" is this branch's tree with src/ and packages/ checked out from f7607a3, so that binary prints this branch's revision. "PR" is this branch before its rebase over 2 commits that do not touch these files. CPU times are clock_gettime thread and process clocks. Instruction and cycle counts are perf_event_open counters over one process from exec to exit, and a value per read is the slope between two read counts (median of 5 runs). Runs alternate between the builds. Two values joined by a slash are two copies of one binary: copies differ by up to 4 % in time on this machine.

What gets better.

  • Largest event-loop gap over one awaited read (1 ms heartbeat), main -> PR (readFile on main): 32 MiB dense multibyte 30.7 -> 1.5 ms (1.9). 32 MiB mostly-ASCII 25.0 -> 1.5 (1.6). 8 MiB dense 8.7 -> 1.1 (1.1). 32 MiB of valid text with one bad byte 103.5 -> 2.4 (3.1). 32 MiB of 0xFF 206.9 -> 2.8 (2.6).
  • JS-thread CPU per .text() at 32 MiB (ms): multibyte 36.3 -> 0.49, ASCII 1.64 -> 0.48, UTF-16LE BOM 9.00 -> 0.52, UTF-8 BOM + ASCII 15.8 -> 0.39, UTF-8 BOM + multibyte 35.2 -> 0.52, 0xFF 236.3 -> 1.17, random bytes 391.5 -> 1.17.
  • JS-thread instructions per .text() (user mode): 4 KiB ASCII 6,774 / 6,795 -> 5,941 / 5,929. 4 KiB multibyte 16,668 / 16,695 -> 6,161 / 6,085. 1 MiB multibyte 2,510,171 / 2,512,782 -> 109,152 / 111,186. 128 KiB of 0xFF 17,604,406 / 17,604,474 -> 16,352 / 16,225.
  • One Promise.all, wall time (ms): 2,000 x 64 KiB mostly-ASCII 67.0 / 66.1 -> 15.5 / 11.6. 2,000 x 4 KiB 11.7 -> 6.5. 2,000 x 64 KiB ASCII 13.9 -> 7.1. 8 x 8 MiB multibyte 47.0 -> 11.2. 64 x 1 MiB multibyte 38.9 -> 5.6.
  • Bun.serve, 64 connections, server on 6 CPUs. Handler reads 256 KiB and answers with its length: 3,344 -> 5,069 req/s. Handler sends the text: 1,564 -> 1,727 req/s. At 1 MiB: 864 -> 1,397 and 454 -> 485.
  • bench/snippets/bun-file-text.mjs (new), p50 of one run, main / PR / Bun 1.4.3-canary / Node 26.3 (fs.openAsBlob(path).text() in Node): 8 x text() of 256 KiB UTF-8 978 / 347 / 888 / 1,590 µs. 8 x 8 MiB UTF-8 51.0 / 8.4 / 51.3 / 59.9 ms. 8 x 8 MiB ASCII 5.4 / 3.0 / 5.2 / 42.2 ms. One text() of 8 MiB UTF-8 6.0 / 6.2 / 5.2 / 9.1 ms. The 8 x readFile(path, "utf8") case of the snippet was added in review, after these runs.

What gets worse.

  • One read at a time, wall time per read (µs, mean of two copies): mostly-ASCII 256 KiB 112 -> 119, dense 1 MiB 672 -> 707, mostly-ASCII 1 MiB 422 -> 463, dense 8 MiB 6,609 -> 6,733. At 64 KiB it is 50 -> 48 and 40 -> 39. CPU cycles per read of 1 MiB multibyte text, all threads, user plus kernel: 2.88 M / 2.73 M on main, 2.81 M / 2.79 M here.
  • Process CPU per read, one at a time: random 128 KiB +5.0 %, 0xFF 128 KiB +5.9 %, 0xFF 1 MiB +1.4 %, 0xFF 32 MiB +2.5 %, random 1 MiB and 32 MiB 0 %. Valid text at 32 MiB: multibyte -6.7 %, UTF-8 BOM + ASCII -18.1 % (a copy is gone), ASCII -1.3 %.
  • The invalid UTF-8 increase is not more work in user code. Per read of 128 KiB of 0xFF, over all threads: user instructions 17,612,833 / 17,613,575 -> 17,614,509 / 17,615,197. User cycles 3,034,399 / 3,040,344 -> 3,073,481 / 3,076,499 (+1.3 %). Kernel cycles 356,839 / 441,357 -> 574,152 / 472,986. readFile on main: 3,099,989 user and 426,900 kernel cycles. Control, fs.readFileSync(p, "utf8"): 2,960,054 / 2,949,950 -> 2,961,197 / 2,969,323 user cycles.
  • k overlapping 32 MiB multibyte reads, main -> PR (readFile on main). k = 4: wall 126 -> 60 ms, process CPU 184 -> 222 ms, peak RSS 323 -> 388 MB (388). k = 12: wall 344 -> 98 ms, process CPU 625 -> 948 ms (965), system time 397 -> 671 ms, minor faults 176,601 -> 246,255, peak RSS 675 -> 1,028 MB (1,030). Twelve 32 MiB reads of 0xFF: 867 -> 1,222 MB (1,207). Each pool thread holds its bytes and its UTF-16 at once, so the extra peak grows with min(overlapping reads, pool threads). On main the JS thread decoded one file after the other.
  • 300 overlapping reads of 1 MiB mostly-ASCII text, each result dropped on arrival: peak RSS 350 -> 474 MB (readFile on main: 522). A finished read now waits for the JS thread as UTF-16, not as bytes.
  • Another VM's pool work. The main thread calls fs.promises.stat in a loop while a Worker runs 24 loops of .text() (12 pool threads). 8 MiB multibyte: p50 0.15 -> 2.97 ms, p99 4.4 -> 76.6 ms, and the Worker completes 1,961 reads against 382. 1 MiB mostly-ASCII: p99 4.1 -> 6.7 ms. 8 MiB of 0xFF: p99 3.1 -> 626 ms.
  • Bun.serve in a cgroup with a cpu.max quota, 64 connections, handler reads 256 KiB of mostly-ASCII text and answers with its length, median of 3, main -> PR (readFile on main):
    • 0.5 CPU: 3,402 -> 3,777 req/s, p99 74.9 -> 82.8 ms (87.5).
    • 1 CPU: 7,796 -> 8,837 req/s, p99 30.2 -> 54.7 ms (54.0).
    • 1.5 CPUs: 8,713 -> 14,357 req/s, p99 18.7 -> 23.0 ms (27.1). The quota throttles main in 0 of 37 periods and the PR in 27 of 36.
    • 2 CPUs: 8,030 -> 12,823 req/s, p99 19.4 -> 16.9 ms (14.3).
  • The same when the handler sends the text: 0.5 CPU 1,931 -> 1,884 req/s, p99 86.0 -> 89.4 ms. 1 CPU 4,319 -> 3,967 req/s, p99 35.3 -> 54.2 ms. 1.5 CPUs 4,418 -> 5,802 req/s, p99 32.9 -> 29.5 ms. 2 CPUs 4,479 -> 5,516 req/s, p99 29.4 -> 26.5 ms. From an earlier run at 1 CPU: sends 1 MiB 1,042 -> 878 req/s, p99 122.7 -> 164.7 ms (168.7). Reads 64 KiB: 10,789 -> 11,272 req/s, p99 17.7 -> 21.1 ms.
  • worker.terminate() waits for a decode that already runs on the pool. Worker busy in script, 100 MiB of 0xFF, terminate 150 ms after the read starts: 47 -> 681 ms. When the worker is idle, or the read is still in flight, the two builds are equal: 80.6 against 78.6 ms at 100 MiB, 18.8 against 17.7 ms at 16 MiB. fs.promises.readFile(p, "utf8") on main waits for its transcode in the same way: 680 to 822 ms in three later runs of the busy case, against 653 to 819 ms for this PR.
  • After 200 reads of 256 KiB multibyte text, all dropped: RSS settles at 33 MB on main within 5 s. The PR build holds 41 MB for 30 s, then 37 MB.

What does not change.

  • 4 KiB reads, process CPU per read, quartiles of 40 samples pinned to 4 CPUs (µs): ASCII .text() 13.7 to 22.0 on main, 13.6 to 22.9 here. .bytes() 14.1 to 25.7 and 14.0 to 24.6.
  • Instructions per read over all threads (user mode): 4 KiB ASCII .text() 11,212 / 11,252 -> 11,149 / 11,134. 4 KiB multibyte .text() 20,811 / 20,826 -> 20,732 / 20,684. 1 MiB multibyte .text() 2,550,916 / 2,553,776 -> 2,548,983 / 2,552,065. 4 KiB .bytes() 11,400 / 11,330 -> 11,285 / 11,427, of which the JS thread has 6,641 / 6,689 -> 6,675 / 6,729.
  • Allocations per 4 KiB ASCII .text(): 6 mallocs and 1 realloc by the read on both builds. 2 mallocs and the realloc move from the JS thread to the pool. Multibyte: 7 and 1 on both. .bytes(): 6 and 1 (gdb hit counts, slope over 1000 reads). .json() of a 30-byte file, all threads with the collector: 7.96 mallocs and 1.07 reallocs on main, 7.93 and 1.07 here.
  • Per .text() and per .bytes(): 1.00 Job<ReadFile>::schedule, 1.00 Ticket::post, 1 openat, 1 fstat, 2 read, 1 close, 1 write on both builds (gdb). The allocator's madvise calls vary from 0.1 to 0.4 per read on both.
  • The buffer an ASCII text adopts has no spare capacity: the decoder takes a Box<[u8]>. A 3-byte pipe read keeps an 8-byte block, a 4,088-byte file a 5,120-byte block (gdb, mi_usable_size).
  • size_of::<ReadFile>(): 440 -> 464 bytes. Job<ReadFile> box: 552 -> 576 bytes, mimalloc size class 640 -> 640.
  • Release binary: +2,304 bytes text, +0 bytes data (size).
  • Thread that decodes: 0 of 30 fixture x route cells decode or build the string on the JS thread (6 content classes of 1 MiB by path, fd, slice, Response, stdin pipe, gdb breakpoints with $_thread). On main 6 of 6 do on the path route.
  • process.exit(0) right after a 100 MiB .text() starts: 9.6 ms from spawn to exit on both builds (median of 20, the two halves of main's runs differ by 6 %).

The two halves of the diff.

  • Decoder swap: text_from_owned_bytes and the to_string_with_bytes hunks in Blob.rs. It has no cfg and it is the live path on Windows. The identity tests in bun-file.test.ts and the two new blob-oom.test.ts rows belong to it. They pass on main, except the row below.
  • Pool move: ReadAs, READ_AS, ReadFileResultType::Text and the on_finish block. The five thread tests belong to it. On main the JS thread has 97 to 99 % of the CPU time of the read, and 1 % here.
  • READ_AS has no default, so every converter states it. When Remove libuv on Windows #42819 removes ReadFileUV, a gate left on one of them is a missing-item error on Windows.
  • Internal::to_string_owned (body text) stays separate: it sniffs only the UTF-8 BOM, and the new decoder also sniffs FF FE as Blob.text() does.

One result changes, only under the test-only allocation limit. A file of ASCII behind a UTF-8 BOM that is longer than the synthetic limit resolved before: that arm copied with clone_latin1, which does not read the synthetic limit. It now rejects with ERR_STRING_TOO_LONG, as the same bytes do in an in-memory Blob. At the real limit (2^31 - 1) both reject. blob-oom.test.ts pins it.

Properties I checked by hand.

  • The decode runs once per job: on_finish takes io_task in one place, after do_close.
  • It runs only on pool threads: every caller of on_finish is a pool task.
  • text is dropped on the JS thread when the job is released unrun.
  • A job that did not decode still delivers bytes, and then decodes them as before.
  • No test pins the two guards in on_finish. system_error.is_none() only saves work: then returns the error first. For script_allowed() I compared debug builds: worker.terminate() during a 100 MiB read returns in 167 to 262 ms (5 of 5 runs), and without the guard it waits 5.4 to 6.0 s for a 16 MiB decode (3 of 3).

readFile is not a full workaround. fs.promises.readFile(p, "utf8") keeps U+FEFF for a UTF-8 BOM, does not sniff a UTF-16LE BOM, and cannot read a .slice() or a Response body.

Other PRs in these functions. #42819 (removes ReadFileUV), #44888 (formData read buffer) and #40221 (unsafe removal) edit Blob.rs and read_file.rs. Whichever lands second rebases the Text variant.

Not in this PR. Windows, S3 .text(), pending bodies (fetch().text(), Request.text()), in-memory text, .json(), .formData(), stream text. The thread tests are test.todoIf(isWindows). Two more JS-thread costs are outside this change. The to_utf16_alloc fallback makes a decode with one invalid byte about 3 times slower (32 MiB through Blob.text(): 39.9 -> 113.6 ms), and this PR only moves it to the pool for file reads. Bun.write(path, string) copies the string before its pool job starts: 77.6 ms for 128 MiB of ASCII, against 4.6 ms for fs.promises.writeFile.

Suites run on the debug build: test/js/bun/util/bun-file.test.ts, bun-file-read.test.ts, bun-file-fd-read.test.ts, bun-stdin-slice.test.ts, test/js/web/fetch/blob-oom.test.ts, blob.test.ts, utf8-bom.test.ts, test/js/node/fs/fs-oom.test.ts, test/js/web/workers/worker-late-completion.test.ts, a-read-of-a-file-descriptor-is-the-last-thing-pending.test.ts, test/internal/source-lints/. cargo check -p bun_runtime for Linux glibc and musl, macOS arm64, FreeBSD, Android, and Windows x64 and arm64. I did not run anything on Windows or macOS. CI did: bun-file.test.ts has 43 pass on macOS, and 38 pass and 5 todo on Windows.

Repro.

// dd if=/dev/urandom of=big.bin bs=1M count=100 && bun repro.mjs big.bin
let last = performance.now(), maxgap = 0
setInterval(() => {
  const n = performance.now()
  maxgap = Math.max(maxgap, n - last)
  last = n
}, 1)
const s = await Bun.file(process.argv[2]).text()
console.log({ max_loop_gap_ms: Math.round(Math.max(maxgap, performance.now() - last)), chars: s.length })
process.exit(0)

On 1.4.3-canary.1+367d939d9 this prints a gap of 1309 ms. With fs.promises.readFile(p, "utf8") it prints 7 ms.

no test proof · iteration 2 · platform-specific test(s) that do not run on this machine, deferring to CI, which covers all platforms: test/js/web/fetch/blob-oom.test.ts, test/js/node/fs/fs-oom.test.ts, test/js/bun/util/bun-file.test.ts

The POSIX read job read the bytes on the work pool and returned them to
the JS thread. `to_string_with_bytes` decoded them there, so a large
file that is not ASCII blocked the event loop for the whole decode, and
reads in a batch decoded one after the other.

`ReadFileToJs::READ_AS` tells the job what to produce. For `.text()` it
is `ReadAs::Text`: `ReadFile::on_finish` decodes the buffer where it
completes the job, after the fd is closed, and `then` delivers
`ReadFileResultType::Text`. The job does not decode after a read error
or when its VM stops. The constant has no default and is POSIX-only:
Windows reads through `ReadFileUV`, which has no pool stage.

`text_from_owned_bytes` is the decoder. It also replaces the
`Temporary` arm of `to_string_with_bytes`, which a Windows read still
reaches on the JS thread.

bench/snippets/bun-file-text.mjs measures one read and eight
overlapping reads for each content class and size.

Status

How I reproduced it: on 1.4.3-canary.1+367d939d9 (Linux x64), the script under "Repro" in the PR notes prints a largest event-loop gap of 1309 ms for await Bun.file(p).text() on 100 MB of random bytes, and 7 ms for fs.promises.readFile(p, "utf8"). On a debug build of main, the five "decodes on the work pool" tests in test/js/bun/util/bun-file.test.ts fail: the JS thread has 97 to 99 % of the CPU time of the read. With this PR it has 1 %.

CI on the head commit 03759bc (build 135951): the tests of this PR pass on every lane. test/js/bun/util/bun-file.test.ts has 43 pass on Linux and macOS, and 38 pass and 5 todo on Windows. One test fails on every retry, and this PR does not touch it: test/aot/engine/ir-6.test.ts. It also fails on main at 204d701, the base of this branch (build 135934).

Open for a maintainer: the peak memory of overlapping large reads (first Downsides bullet, and the one open review thread).

PR: #47509

Walkthrough

Non-Windows file reads can decode text on the work pool and return the decoded string through the read callback. Temporary byte buffers use owned-byte conversion with BOM handling. Tests cover decoding routes and allocation limits, and a benchmark compares text reads with UTF-8 readFile.

Changes

File text decoding

Layer / File(s) Summary
Temporary-buffer text conversion
src/runtime/webcore/Blob.rs
Temporary buffers are reclaimed before conversion. The owned-byte helper handles UTF-16LE, UTF-8, and UTF-8 BOM input.

Add a concurrent readFile case to the eight-read group.

The eight-read group runs only 8 x text(). It has no matching 8 x readFile(path, "utf8") case, so the results cannot compare concurrent Bun.file().text() with concurrent readFile. The file header describes that comparison.

Suggested fix
       bench("8 x text()", async () => (await Promise.all(Array.from({ length: 8 }, () => text(path)))).length);
+      bench('8 x readFile(path, "utf8")', async () => (await Promise.all(Array.from({ length: 8 }, () => readFile(path, "utf8")))).length);

Beyond the inline findings, I also checked the removed Lifetime::Temporary arms of to_string_with_bytes against text_from_owned_bytes case by case (BOM-only, UTF-16LE BOM, UTF-8 BOM with Latin-1 or UTF-16 output, no BOM, invalid UTF-8) — the string content matches and the transcode-failure path yields the same STRING_TOO_LONG/OOM sentinels via from_owned_utf8. I also traced the close_after_io branch of on_finish, where text stays None: the job still delivers ReadFileResultType::Result and the completion decodes on the JS thread, so no read loses its result there (it just is not moved off-thread).

Extended reasoning...

The change moves Bun.file().text() UTF-8/BOM decoding from the JS-thread completion into the POSIX ReadFile job's on_finish on the work pool, adds a ReadAs/Text result variant, replaces the Temporary arm of to_string_with_bytes with a thread-agnostic text_from_owned_bytes, widens String::is_thread_isolated to pub, and adds fixture, OOM, and CPU-ratio tests plus a benchmark. It touches no auth, crypto, or injection surface. The two inline findings (parallel-decode memory peak and worker-terminate blocking on an in-flight decode) are tradeoffs the PR itself flags as needing a maintainer decision, so a human must weigh them.

Findings marked 🟡 are optional suggestions and need no follow-up push.

🔴 Servers that await several large .text() reads at once now peak at up to ~50% more RSS than on the base branch and can be OOM-killed under a memory limit. read_file.rs:733 decodes on the pool thread, so each of up to pool-size reads holds its bytes plus its UTF-16 output at the same moment, and every finished read waits for the JS thread as UTF-16 (2x for multibyte) instead of as bytes. The base decoded one read after another on the JS thread. Fix: bound the memory added per overlapping read, e.g. cap concurrent decodes with a semaphore or decode only when the completion is about to run, and document the new peak formula.

Why this was flagged

Trigger: k overlapping Bun.file(p).text() calls on large non-ASCII files from a Bun.serve handler or a Promise.all. read_file.rs:728-735 runs text_from_owned_bytes inside on_finish on the work pool; Blob.rs:5918-5933 keeps the input bytes alive while to_utf16_alloc (string/mod.rs:487) allocates the UTF-16 output, so each pool thread holds both at once, and the result sits in self.text (read_file.rs:735) until the JS thread drains the completion. On the base branch then() (read_file.rs:680) handed raw bytes to the JS thread and to_string_with_bytes::<Temporary> decoded serially, so at most one bytes+UTF-16 pair existed and queued results were 1x bytes. The extra peak scales with min(overlapping reads, pool threads) plus 2x per queued multibyte result; a container with a cgroup memory limit sized on the base's peak gets OOM-killed. No safeguard bounds it. Remedy: cap concurrent pool decodes or keep queued results as bytes until the JS thread is ready.

Verification: src/runtime/webcore/blob/read_file.rs:728-735 on_finish runs text_from_owned_bytes on the pool thread; src/bun_core/string/mod.rs:486-492 runs to_utf16_alloc while bytes is still owned, so each pool thread holds the input bytes plus the UTF-16 buffer. On the base branch the same transient occurred one read at a time on the JS thread, and pending results waited as raw bytes rather than as UTF-16.

This is the cost in the first Downsides bullet, and the numbers agree. I did not add a cap in this PR. The PR body asks a maintainer to decide it.

What the measurements in the notes show:

  • Twelve overlapping 32 MiB reads peak at 1,028 MB against 675 MB on main, with all twelve results kept. The extra memory is the input of the decodes that run at the same time: at most min(overlapping reads, pool threads) x file size.
  • fs.promises.readFile(path, "utf8") decodes on the pool in the same way today. It peaks at 1,030 MB for the same twelve reads.

What a cap costs:

  • A cap makes decodes wait. A pool thread must not block for that, so the reads that finished need a process-wide queue.
  • With one large decode at a time, the event loop would stay free and the peak would return to about the value on main. The wall time of overlapping large reads would also return to about the value on main (344 ms for the twelve reads, 98 ms in this PR). I did not build or measure this variant.
  • .text() then behaves differently from readFile.

If a maintainer wants the bound, this block in on_finish is the place for it: a byte budget for the decodes in flight, and a read over the budget waits. I can add that to this PR.

…ts fixtures

The snippet ran eight overlapping `text()` reads but only one
`readFile(path, "utf8")` read. It now also runs eight overlapping
`readFile` reads, so the two APIs compare under the same load.

The fixtures go into one temporary directory. The snippet removes that
directory after the run, also when the run fails.

One correction to the review summary above, so that nobody reads it as a gap for pipes.

In the close_after_io case, on_finish does not finish the job with text unset. do_close hands the close to the io thread and on_finish returns. After the io thread closes the poll, a pool task calls on_finish again. That second call decodes and finishes the job. So a pipe read also decodes on the work pool.

A debug build shows the order for a pipe read that parks (BUN_DEBUG_WriteFile=1): ReadFile.onFinish() = deferred, then ReadFile.onFinish() = immediately. The stdin row of the thread test reads from a pipe, and it passes on Linux and macOS.

The loop that writes the fixtures ran before the `try` block. If a
write failed, the `finally` block did not run, and the temporary
directory stayed on disk. The loop is now inside the `try` block.
