which: answer from the path when open(O_EXEC) fails with EMFILE or ENFILE - #47433
On macOS, a process with no free descriptor cannot find a command on PATH. A spawn by name throws ENOENT: Executable not found in $PATH, Bun.which returns null, and the shell prints bun: command not found. Linux and Node report EMFILE.
The cause is is_executable_file (src/jsc/bindings/c-bindings.cpp:96). It tests each candidate with open(O_EXEC) and reads every failure as "not executable".
Keep the open. When it fails with EMFILE or ENFILE, ask about the path: stat, then faccessat(X_OK, AT_EACCESS). The editor lookup (src/runtime/cli/open.rs) has the same fallback on its open.
Correct because the two ways agree on every scanned path on four Macs.
Verified: which.test.ts, spawn-path.test.ts, spawn-sync-loop-init-fail.test.ts: red on four Macs without the fix, green with it on macOS 15.7.7 and 26.4 (arm64) and 14.8.9 (x64). Linux passes both ways.
Self-reviewed: 23 concerns, 17 addressed. Notes lists the other 6.
Background
is_executable_file is the probe behind Bun.which, a spawn by name and the shell.
XNU allocates the descriptor before it reads the path, so a full table fails open for every candidate.
Considered getattrlist for every candidate: 1.2 to 11 times as slow for a found command. Considered the mode bits: an ACL makes them wrong.
Downsides
A missed candidate runs 4 more instructions and one __error call. A found command runs 2 fewer (arm64).
A file whose ACL denies readattr is found only while a descriptor is free.
Not run anywhere: the ENFILE half, the FreeBSD arm, the editor fallback.
Notes
Origin. Build 135465 of #47392 (macOS arm64) ran spawnSync("true") with no descriptor left and got ENOENT. There is no issue for it.
spawn-path.test.ts: ENOENT in place of EMFILE from child_process.spawnSync, child_process.spawn, Bun.spawnSync and Bun.spawn.
spawn-sync-loop-init-fail.test.ts: spawnSync threw: ENOENT Executable not found in $PATH: "sh".
which.test.ts: Bun.which is null for a bare name, a relative path, an absolute path and a symlink. One shell step prints bun: command not found: tool.
Every Linux lane passes them. The Linux probe is a stat, so a run on Linux cannot show the failure.
What the same machines measured (a temporary bun:ffi report, see the end):
With no descriptor left: open(O_EXEC) fails with errno 24, stat + faccessat answers yes, Bun.which returns null.
Bun.which("tool") with the command in the 10th of 12 PATH directories: 11 system calls with descriptors free. With none left: 12, and no answer.
With descriptors free, open(O_EXEC) and stat + faccessat(X_OK, AT_EACCESS) agree on every entry of 15 to 20 directories: 2,340, 2,612, 2,672 and 2,297 paths, 0 differ. The owner execute bit alone differs on /usr/sbin/cupsd, on the three machines that measured it.
Of 24 or 25 fixtures, 1 differs: a 0755 file whose ACL denies readattr. open says yes, stat fails with EACCES.
Why the open stays. Instructions for one found command, open + close / getattrlist(OBJTYPE, USERACCESS) / stat + faccessat:

The two arm64 virtual machines have no instruction counter. By time, over all four Macs and eight kinds of target, getattrlist is 1.2 to 11 times as slow as open + close for a found command. The smallest ratio is /bin/ls on x64. A missing name costs about the same each way.
With the fix. Build 135822 ran the head 613b0c4. Its three macOS lanes passed whole, 12 of 12 shards: two arm64 lanes and the x64 lane. Builds 135763 (0615609) and 135805 (dea021e) ran the same probe before it. The head differs from them in a comment of c-bindings.cpp, the editor fallback and the PATH of one test.

A cell with no build number is a run of the head. A lane runs each file on one of its machines, so the two 26.6 rows have one file each.
Build 135822 is the first run of the fix on x64. Without the fix, macOS 14.8.9 x64 showed the same failures and the same answers as arm64 (build 135705).
The two ACL rows ran on 15.7.7, 26.4 and 14.8.9. which.test.ts makes 56 assertions on arm64 and 55 on x64, where an older isIntelMacOS guard leaves one out.
Measured on macOS 26.4 arm64 in build 135763:
With no descriptor left, Bun.which now answers as stat + faccessat does for every fixture: yes for the executables, no for a 0644 file, a directory, a FIFO, a socket and a file that an ACL refuses.
Bun.which differs from its answer with descriptors free on 1 of 25 fixtures: the file whose ACL denies readattr.
Bun.which("tool"), the command in the 10th of 12 directories: 11 system calls with descriptors free, as before. With none left: 21, and the command is found (before: 12, not found).
With descriptors free, Bun.which and open(O_EXEC) agree on all 2,672 scanned paths, as before.

The report ran with the fix only on a virtual machine with no counter, and its time per call has a spread of 10% to 75%, which is more than the change.
x64, before: the probe is inlined into bun_sys::posix_impl::is_executable_file_path, 48 bytes and 19 instructions. x64, with the fix, compiled alone with the same clang at -O3: 18 instructions for a found command and 21 for a missed candidate. The x64 image of the fix was not measured.
Linux: the preprocessed c-bindings.cpp is byte-identical to main (clang -E -P, linux-x64 flags). musl and Android were not preprocessed here. The new lines are under !OS(LINUX).
Self-review: what was not adopted.
A gate that sends FreeBSD straight to the path query (2 concerns). O_SEARCH is O_EXEC in FreeBSD's sys/fcntl.h, so its open may take a directory. That change touches every lookup on a platform that no lane runs, for a different wrong answer. The comment and the doc line were reworded so that they hold on FreeBSD.
A test for ENFILE through a dyld shim that replaces open (2 concerns). A real ENFILE needs a full system table. The shim was not run on a Mac, and this change does not add one. The ENFILE half shares its branch with EMFILE and is read from XNU (falloc_withinit), not run.
Two statements for this text that were not verified here: the reach by installed memory, and a failure of released musl builds.
Not claimed.
The crash reporter's curl lookup and bun patch --commit: both call getcwd first, and getcwd needs a descriptor on macOS (test/js/node/fs/fs.test.ts:3327).
A spawn that needs pipes still fails with no descriptor left. It now reports EMFILE. A name that does not exist is still ENOENT.
The Linux arm reads only the owner execute bit. This change does not touch it.
FreeBSD. It shares the arm. CI compiles it and no lane runs it.
Editor lookup.by_fallback_path_for_editor opens each install location for reading and drops every error. Read from the code, not observed: with the probe repaired, a full table lets the PATH half of the lookup answer and this half miss, so a named editor under /Applications loses to the next editor on PATH. This half now has the same fallback: when its open fails with EMFILE or ENFILE, it asks access(R_OK) about the path. With a descriptor free the lookup is as on main (the diff of open.rs is +7/-0). A first version sent these paths through the PATH probe, which changed the test of an install location for every lookup. A review pointed that out, and d6b198d restored the read probe. The new arm is type-checked for macOS, FreeBSD, Linux and Windows and not run: no lane has those editors.
Left as is. The isIntelMacOS skip in which.test.ts, and the comments that say macOS which takes a directory (script_or_command.rs:304, lint.test.ts, format.test.ts). All four Macs refuse a directory.
Linux stand-in. A preload shim that makes the probe's stat take a descriptor gives the macOS failures on linux-x64: the four by-name tests fail, and the /bin/sh row passes.
How it was measured. A temporary bun:ffi test printed these reports on the CI Macs. It is removed in dea021e, and its two ACL rows are in which.test.ts. The system calls are the per-task count of the kernel (task_info), not dtruss, which needs root. The function bytes were read from the image on the Mac, because the build artifacts cannot be reached from the development machine and bloaty is not installed there.
no test proof · iteration 3 · platform-specific test(s) that do not run on this machine, deferring to CI, which covers all platforms: test/js/bun/util/which.test.ts, test/js/bun/spawn/spawn-path.test.ts
`Bun.which`, a spawn by name and a shell command all search PATH. The
search asks a question about a path, so it must also work when the
process has no file descriptor left. A spawn by name then fails on its
pipes with EMFILE, as in Node.
macOS opens each candidate to test it. These tests fail there until the
probe stops opening the candidate: the spawn reports ENOENT,
`Bun.which` returns null, and the shell prints "command not found".
Linux passes, because its probe is a `stat`.
Compares open(O_EXEC) with getattrlist on the macOS CI machines: the
answers for every file of every PATH directory, and the cost per call.
The test fails on purpose so that CI prints the report. It is removed
before the pull request is ready.
[macos tests]
Reproduced on macOS in CI, on commits with no source change: the new tests fail on four machines (macOS 26.6.2, 15.7.7 and 26.4 on arm64, macOS 14.8.9 on x64, builds 135617, 135623 and 135705). The Linux lanes pass them.
The same machines show the mechanism: with no descriptor left, open(O_EXEC) fails with errno 24 and Bun.which returns null, while stat and faccessat answer yes.
With the fix, build 135822 of the head 613b0c4 passes its three macOS lanes whole, 12 of 12 shards. which.test.ts, spawn-path.test.ts and spawn-sync-loop-init-fail.test.ts all pass on macOS 15.7.7 (arm64) and on macOS 14.8.9 (x64). On the macOS 26 lane, spawn-path.test.ts passes on 26.6.1 and the other two pass on 26.4.
Build 135822 is red for two tests in files that this change does not touch. test/aot/engine/ir-6.test.ts (Alpine, Debian ASAN, Windows) failed the same way on the builds of this branch that had no source change. test/aot/workers-within-address-space-limit.test.ts (Alpine x64) runs a compiled program that aborts under a 1 GB address-space limit. The Linux PATH probe of this branch is the same source as on main.
Adds the cost of each way to ask for several kinds of target (system
binaries, a script in a temporary directory, a node_modules/.bin
symlink, a path ten directories down), the pieces of each call on their
own, and two predicates that read only the mode bits.
[macos tests]
The report now has Bun.which of this build beside the raw calls: its
answers for every scanned path and fixture with descriptors free and
with none left, its instructions and system calls per call, and the
bytes of the probe in the Mach-O image. This commit has no source
change, so its numbers are the baseline for the fix.

which: test a PATH candidate without opening it on macOS and FreeBSD
which: answer from the path when open(O_EXEC) fails with EMFILE or ENFILE
Oct 30, 2026
On macOS and FreeBSD the PATH probe opens each candidate with O_EXEC and
reads every failure as "not executable". With no descriptor free the
open fails with EMFILE, or with ENFILE when the system table is full,
so every command is reported as missing: a spawn by name throws ENOENT,
Bun.which returns null, and the shell prints "command not found".
For those two errors the probe now asks about the path: stat for a
regular file, then faccessat(X_OK, AT_EACCESS). A command that is found
still costs one open and one close.
The editor lookup tested its install locations with its own open. It
now calls the same probe, so both halves of that lookup give the same
answer when no descriptor is free.
spawn-sync-loop-init-fail: the `/bin/sh` row is back as it was. It
reaches us_create_loop with no PATH lookup in front. The `sh` row is
new and stands beside it.
which: two macOS rows, for a file that an ACL refuses although it has
the execute bits, and for one that an ACL grants although it has none.
The owner bit says the opposite for both, so the rows fail if the
lookup reads only the mode when it has no descriptor.
The report did its work: it compared the ways to test a PATH candidate
on four Macs, before and with the fix. The two rows that only it had,
for files under an ACL, are in which.test.ts now.

Walkthrough
Executable checks now use a path-based fallback when opening a file fails because the process has exhausted file descriptors. Runtime editor selection uses executable checks, and regression tests cover lookup and spawning under descriptor limits.
When open fails with EMFILE or ENFILE, executable checks validate the path as a regular file and check execute access for the effective user. Editor fallback selection returns the first executable path. The Rust documentation describes the platform-specific behavior.
Tests cover spawn APIs and PATH lookup under descriptor exhaustion. The event-loop initialization test now runs with both /bin/sh and sh.
Lookup and shell regression tests test/js/bun/util/which.test.ts
Tests compare Bun.which results before and during descriptor exhaustion across multiple path types. A shell test checks command execution as descriptors are released.
The executable-lookup fallback has no established production defect in the supplied evidence. The new spawn test can fail under a restricted PATH; normalize its environment before merging or accept this bounded test-portability limitation.

The new test exhausts only the per-process descriptor table, so the ENFILE fallback in is_executable_file is never exercised. On Linux, the probe does not open a descriptor, so the test does not reach that fallback there.

🟣 pre-existing, not blocking: macOS users with an ACL that denies readattr on an executable get two different Bun.which answers for the same file depending on how many descriptors are open. isExecutableFileByPath at src/jsc/bindings/c-bindings.cpp:96 starts with stat, which such an ACL refuses with EACCES, so the probe says no while open(O_EXEC) at c-bindings.cpp:104 says yes with a descriptor free. The PR accepts this as a trade-off, but the test at test/js/bun/util/which.test.ts:489 asserts withDescriptors equals withoutDescriptors, which this file class violates. Fix: skip the stat when it fails with EACCES and answer from faccessat(X_OK, AT_EACCESS) alone (it needs no readattr), keeping S_ISREG only when stat succeeds, so the two probes agree on this population too. A small fix can ride a push you are already making; otherwise a short reply is enough.
Why this was flagged
Trigger: a process on macOS with the descriptor table full (EMFILE at c-bindings.cpp:108) looks up a 0755 file whose ACL has deny readattr; the PR's own measurement names this as the one fixture of 25 that differs. isExecutableFileByPath at c-bindings.cpp:96 requires stat to succeed before faccessat runs, and stat fails with EACCES under that ACL, so Bun.which returns null and spawn-by-name reports ENOENT "Executable not found in $PATH" (src/runtime/api/bun/js_bun_spawn_bindings.rs:138), where Node reports EMFILE. On the base branch the answer was also null, so this is not a regression on its own, but the PR's stated contract (doc at src/sys/lib.rs:3024: it "answers also when the process has no descriptor left") and its own test invariant (which.test.ts:489 withDescriptors toEqual withoutDescriptors) are not met for this file class. Remedy: when stat fails with EACCES, fall through to faccessat alone, so the probe matches open(O_EXEC) for readattr-denied executables.
Verification: Trigger: macOS, descriptor table full, and the candidate on PATH is a 0755 file whose ACL denies readattr. A stat failure at src/jsc/bindings/c-bindings.cpp:96 short-circuits to false before faccessat is consulted. The equality assertion at test/js/bun/util/which.test.ts:489-499 never exercises the readattr case. On the base commit the same file under EMFILE already returned false.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Not adopted. Without stat the probe does not know what kind of file it has.
faccessat(X_OK) alone also says yes for a directory that can be searched, and for a FIFO or a socket with the execute bits. open(O_EXEC) refuses all three on every Mac that was measured. So the change moves the disagreement to another kind of file. It does not remove it.
Nothing that avoids readattr returns the type. getattrlist(ATTR_CMN_OBJTYPE) needs the same right, and it failed with EACCES on this fixture.
faccessat alone was not measured under this ACL on a Mac. That part is read from XNU.
The case stays as the second bullet of Downsides. With no descriptor left, the answer for this file was null on main too. You are right that the test does not cover it: it has no fixture of this kind.
The install locations of an editor are tested with open(O_RDONLY) again,
as before this branch. With a descriptor free the lookup gives the
answers that it gave on main. Only when that open fails with EMFILE or
ENFILE does it ask access(R_OK) about the path.
c-bindings.cpp: the comment now sits on the branch that it describes,
the two errors that say no descriptor was free.
The `sh` row found its command through the PATH of the test runner.
Both rows now get PATH=/bin:/usr/bin, so the row depends only on the
lookup that it tests.

Replies to the automatic reviews. The changes are in d6b198d and 613b0c4.
sh row and PATH: fixed. Both rows of spawn-sync-loop-init-fail.test.ts get a fixed PATH.
Editor lookup: the read probe is back as on main. Only the arm for EMFILE and ENFILE is added.
ENFILE case in spawn-path.test.ts: not added. On Linux the fallback is not compiled: the Linux probe is a stat, which cannot get ENFILE from an open. On macOS a real ENFILE needs the system file table full, and a test must not do that. The other way is a shim that replaces open, and this change does not add one. EMFILE and ENFILE share one branch. Downsides names the ENFILE half as not run.
The readattr ACL case and the other open errors: answered in their threads, not changed.
The red checks are test/aot/engine/ir-6.test.ts and test/aot/build-scaling/build-scaling-2.test.ts. This change does not touch them, so the option to let the review tool fix CI is not used.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
I re-reviewed the latest push (d6b198d, 613b0c4) and found no bugs; the editor fallback now keeps its O_RDONLY probe and only consults access(R_OK) on EMFILE/ENFILE, which resolves the point I raised on open.rs. Because the new branch in is_executable_file runs only on macOS/BSD (no Linux lane can exercise it) and the PR deliberately picks open(O_EXEC) plus a stat/faccessat fallback over the alternatives it benchmarked, a human look at that trade-off would still be worthwhile.
What was reviewed:
The EMFILE/ENFILE arm in c-bindings.cpp: errno is captured before any other call, the helper is gated by the same defined(O_EXEC) && !OS(LINUX) condition as its only caller, and the headers already included provide faccessat/AT_EACCESS/AT_FDCWD.
The new open.rs match arm: bun_sys::access and bun_sys::E::{EMFILE,ENFILE} exist on both the POSIX and Windows sides of bun_sys, so the cfg-free function still type-checks everywhere; bin_path is None off macOS, so the arm is dead there by construction.
The tests: pipes are drained with Promise.all, the fixture asserts that descriptors were actually exhausted (heldSome: true) and closes them before exit, exact error codes are asserted per entry point, and the new spawn-sync-loop-init-fail row is added alongside the existing /bin/sh row rather than replacing it.
Extended reasoning...
The change adds a stat+faccessat(X_OK, AT_EACCESS) fallback to is_executable_file in src/jsc/bindings/c-bindings.cpp when open(O_EXEC) fails with EMFILE or ENFILE, adds a matching EMFILE/ENFILE access(R_OK) arm to the macOS editor lookup in src/runtime/cli/open.rs, updates a doc comment in src/sys/lib.rs, and adds descriptor-exhaustion tests for Bun.which, the shell, child_process/Bun spawn, and the spawnSync loop-init fixture. It touches no auth, crypto, or injection surface; the sensitive part is the PATH-resolution hot path used by every spawn and by the shell on macOS and BSD. The source diff is small and the latest push addressed the one optional inline finding from the prior run, and the bug hunt ran dry with no findings. Deferring rather than approving because the new code is platform-gated to lanes the Linux CI cannot exercise, macOS x64 was not run with the fix per the author, and the PR itself lists design trade-offs (keeping open(O_EXEC), the untested FreeBSD and ENFILE paths) that a maintainer should weigh.

Editor lookup.
by_fallback_path_for_editoropens each install location for reading and drops every error. Read from the code, not observed: with the probe repaired, a full table lets thePATHhalf of the lookup answer and this half miss, so a named editor under/Applicationsloses to the next editor onPATH. This half now has the same fallback: when itsopenfails withEMFILEorENFILE, it asksaccess(R_OK)about the path. With a descriptor free the lookup is as on main (the diff ofopen.rsis +7/-0). A first version sent these paths through thePATHprobe, which changed the test of an install location for every lookup. A review pointed that out, and d6b198d restored the read probe.
