bundler: cover the chunk path, the source map and chunk references in [hash] and debugId - #47285
Two builds can write different bytes under one [hash] name, BuildArtifact.hash or debugId. Found by audit, not reported.
Behind Bun.serve, a prebuilt chunk with a re-pointed import() keeps its ETag and gets a 304.
generate_isolated_hash (src/bundler/LinkerContext.rs:1927) hashes the naming template, not the printed path, before the source map exists. The debugId is that hash.
Fix
Build the source map first. The isolated hash covers the printed path, the map and the sourcemap mode.
final_chunk_hashes hashes the chunk each reference names and sums the closure, free of chunk order. The debugId is the final hash. Standalone HTML hashes inlined assets.
Verified: test/bundler/bundler_naming.test.ts (30 new tests, 28 fail on 1.4.3). See Notes.
A chunk prints a placeholder for each chunk or asset path. The isolated hash covers the rest, the final hash every reached chunk.
A debug ID pairs a chunk with its source map.
esbuild hashes the path and the map too. Folding them into final_chunk_hashes hashes every map serially and leaves the isolated hash wrong.
Downsides
Every hashed JS, CSS, HTML and map name changes once. Asset names stay.
With a source map, a comment in a shared module renames 21 of 127 JS outputs, and each map costs one xxHash64 pass (16.5 ms per 300 MB). Another sourcemap mode renames every JS chunk.

Bun.serve.
Prebuilt (bun build --target=bun --splitting server.ts, the page is an HTML import): the second import() of three moves from y.js to x.js. Before: index-mj01b5am.js has new bytes, the same ETag, and If-None-Match with the old ETag gets 304. After: the chunk has another name.
Runtime route (HTMLBundle.rs sends the chunk hash as ETag with immutable), [serve.static] sourcemap = "inline", a comment edit. Before: /chunk-cmbqf67p.js is 700 then 712 bytes with one ETag and Cache-Control: public, max-age=31536000, immutable. After: two URLs. This route does not split (nothing sets serve_splitting), so only the source map can be stale there.
esbuild. esbuild fills [dir], [name] and [ext] into the template before it hashes it (linker.go:4086-4090, 6860-6862, commit f6058f8). It builds the source map before the hash (5960, 5999) and hashes the map (6901-6903). esbuild 0.25.1 renames the chunk in rows 1 to 4. The comments in generate_isolated_hash are esbuild's. #12576 ported them with the three map writes, which now hash real bytes.
Where this goes past esbuild. esbuild 0.25.1 keeps the name in rows 5, 6 and 7. Three writes cover them:
final_chunk_hashes writes the isolated hash of the chunk that each output piece names (16 hashed bytes per reference). The set of reached chunks does not change in row 6. The prebuilt server above is the case that needs it.
The closure digest is the own hash, then a wrapping sum of the rest. Chunk order follows the entry point bits, and an eighth entry point permutes it.
One byte for the sourcemap mode. With inline the chunk prints the whole map.
The source map in the hash. A 60-page app with 6 shared modules and hashed names: a comment-only edit in one shared module renames 21 of 127 JS outputs with linked or inline, and 0 with none. Before, it renamed 0 and wrote other bytes to one .map (or to one chunk with inline) under the same name. esbuild 0.25.1 renames 21 of 126 in the same project. The three bun init React templates build with a source map (react-tailwind/build.ts:16, react-shadcn/build.ts:16, react-app/package.json:8). Bun has no option that leaves sourcesContent out of the map. An in-memory build and an outdir build write different sources, so they now get different hashes. The hash already covered the pretty path of each file, which is relative to the working directory, so chunk names depended on that directory before this PR (in esbuild 0.25.1 they depend on absWorkingDir). The sources of an in-memory map are relative to the same directory.
debugId. The ID must cover the final paths, and those exist only after the final hash. The map is built earlier, so it carries 32 zero characters and SourceMapPieces::finalize(shifts, debug_id) writes the ID in place. All six emit sites pass Chunk::debug_id(), which is also what the //# debugId= comment prints. A map that has no path to replace is one buffer. finalize returns that buffer without a copy (the new unit test checks the pointer, and the miri job now runs bun_sourcemap).
CSS. A CSS chunk never emits a source map (Content::sourcemap), but post_process_css_chunk built one that nothing read. Its call to generate_source_map_for_chunk needed an edit for the removed isolated_hash argument. This PR deletes the block (58 lines). It also deletes the source_map field of CompileResult::Css: the block was its only reader, and every constructor set it to None.
Measurements. Debug builds of main at 7942008 and of this branch, taken before the merges of main. Since that commit, main changed two lines of generate_source_map_for_chunk (its input now borrows the source map of each part) and none of the other measured functions. gdb counts are for the first call on the calling thread.
One-time rename, 5 projects times 3 sourcemap modes, 541 outputs: 390 of 390 hashed JS names change, 131 of 131 map names, 3 of 3 CSS, 6 of 6 HTML, 0 of 3 assets. All 264 debug IDs change. With the hashes, chunk IDs and debug IDs masked, 541 of 541 outputs have the same bytes.
generate_isolated_hash, one chunk, no source map: 1,018 hashed bytes before, 1,045 after (the path ./index.js, one byte for the mode, two length words). 1 allocation before and after.
With a source map the hashed bytes grow by the size of the map (577 of 577 for one chunk, 867 of 867 for three). 0 for CSS and HTML.
generate_source_map_for_chunk: 17 allocations and 10 reallocations before, 16 and 9 after. Calls for 1 JS chunk plus 1 CSS chunk with --sourcemap=linked: 2 before, 1 after.
SourceMapPieces::finalize: 0 allocations before and after.
final_chunk_hashes: 7 allocations for 1 chunk and 10 plus 5 reallocations for 3 chunks, before and after. Hashed bytes: 32 to 48 for 1 chunk, 160 to 368 for 3 chunks with 14 references.
Standalone HTML: 16 more hashed bytes per inlined asset. The page bytes are identical.
xxHash64 over 300 MB: 16.5 ms (minimum of 7 runs). Over 14 MB: 0.75 ms.
No field is added to Chunk or SourceMapPieces.
Release rlibs of the two crates (cargo build --release, size): bun_bundler text 2,343,506 to 2,344,683 bytes (+1,177), bun_sourcemap 64,569 to 66,154 (+1,585). Measured before the removal of the CompileResult::Css field.
Not measured: a linked release binary and the build time of a large project. A full release build did not fit in the environment. perf, valgrind, strace and bloaty are not installed.
Build-pair fuzzer (random small projects, built twice with one change). 105 pairs: 35 with a stale output before, 0 after. The generator has no HTML imports. With a server entry point that imports the page: 227 pairs, 158 stale before, 127 after. In all 127 the stale output is the server chunk that prints the manifest, or its map.
Existing tests.
Re-pinned 21 literals in 5 files after a read of each new value: 2 hashes in bun-build-api.test.ts.snap, 15 paths and etags in html-import-manifest.test.ts, 1 etag in bun-serve-html.test.ts, 3 debugIds in bundler_promiseall_deadcode.test.ts and cyclic-imports-async-bundler.test.js. Asset names and asset etags do not change.
BuildArtifact properties sourcemap pinned the hash of a build with a source map into a temp outdir. The sources of that map depend on the temp path. The test now checks that the hash is not 00000000, that a second build gives the same hash, and that a build without a source map gives another one. It pins the hash of the same build without an outdir, which has no temp path in its sources.
splitting/ChunkReferencePaths compared the code of an in-memory build with the code of an outdir build. The two maps have different sources, so it now compares the code without the hashes.
Suites run with the debug build. 29 files, 1,672 pass, 2 fail: bundler_naming, html-import-manifest, bundler_promiseall_deadcode, cyclic-imports-async-bundler, bun-serve-html, esbuild/default, standalone, bake/dev/css, bundler_splitting, bundler_html, bundler_compile_splitting, metafile, bundler_html_server, esbuild/splitting, bundler_loader, esbuild/css, cli, bun-build-compile-sourcemap, compile-sourcemap-internal, the four sourcemap files in test/js/bun/sourcemap, bundler_npm, bundler_plugin, bundler_bun, bun-build-api, bundler_edgecase, bundler_compile. The two failures are time limits on this machine's debug build:
edgecase/DeepImportDiamondDAG gives its child build 60 s. On this machine that build takes 21 to 156 s with a debug build of main and 37 to 107 s with this branch (9 runs each). Its user CPU time is 18 s with both. The rest is system time.
Bun.build can be called thousands of times gives 400 builds 180 s. One build of its fixture takes about 2.5 s with both debug builds.
After the merge of main at bf80135, a debug build ran these again: bundler_naming (57 tests), the BuildArtifact tests of bun-build-api (6), and 25 of the other files (1,244 tests). All pass. Three --compile tests of cli.test.ts needed a second run: in the first one they hit 120 s while the disk of this machine stalled. After the removal of the CompileResult::Css field, a debug build ran bundler_naming (57 tests) and 496 more tests again: esbuild/css, the 9 files of test/bundler/css, bundler_html, html-import-manifest, bun-serve-html, standalone, bake/dev/css, bundler_promiseall_deadcode, cyclic-imports-async-bundler, esbuild/splitting and metafile. All pass.
After the merges of main at 000ef50 and da867c6, a debug build ran bundler_naming (57 tests) and 819 more tests again: html-import-manifest, bundler_promiseall_deadcode, cyclic-imports-async-bundler, bun-serve-html, bundler_html, bundler_splitting, esbuild/splitting, metafile, esbuild/css, the BuildArtifact tests of bun-build-api and the five files in test/js/bun/sourcemap. All pass. Two files needed more than the default time limits with this debug build:
esbuild/css passes with --timeout 60000. With the default limit of 5 s, two or three of its tests time out before their build starts. The test harness runs String.raw and trim on each fixture string, and these tests have fixture strings of 128 KB or more. For 262 KB that takes 5.2 s with this debug build and 10 ms with a release build.
source-positions (325 tests) passed in its second full run. In the first one, one test hit the 5 s limit.
Not in this PR.
The HTML import manifest (QueryKind::HtmlImport). A server chunk prints the paths and etags of the client outputs, and final_chunk_hashes adds nothing for that piece. Its debugId has the same gap. Client names now also follow their source maps, so a comment-only edit changes that manifest. bundler: emit each HTML import manifest when chunks are hashed, so [hash] covers it #47387 fixes it. The repro is below.
The order of outputs with 10 or more entry points: a chunk of shared code comes before the first entry point (with 10 entry points, outputs[0] is a chunk-[hash].js on 1.4.3-canary.1). The fix for it changes the chunk order. After this PR the chunk order reaches [hash] only in the widening pass above.
The HTML import manifest gap (not in this PR). The server chunk has the same name and the same BuildArtifact.hash in the two builds, with other bytes. bun 1.4.3-canary.1 prints server-2pcsxf0r.js 2pcsxf0r two times and same bytes: false. This branch prints server-faj4fxnw.js faj4fxnw two times and same bytes: false.
bundler: make sourcemap sources relative to the map file, not outdir #36601: conflict in postProcessCSSChunk.rs, because this PR deletes the block that it edits. It changes the sources of chunks below the outdir root. After this PR that renames those chunks once, so the two fit in one release. It is a separate fix with its own test, so it is not folded in here.
no test proof · iteration 3 · platform-specific test(s) that do not run on this machine, deferring to CI, which covers all platforms: test/bundler/bun-build-api.test.ts
Reproduced on bun 1.4.3-canary.1+367d939d9 with USE_SYSTEM_BUN=1 bun test test/bundler/bundler_naming.test.ts from this branch. 28 of the 30 new tests fail there. The other 2 are controls.
Each failing test builds a project two times with one change. It then finds one path, one BuildArtifact.hash or one debugId that has two contents.
With the debug build of this branch, all 30 pass.
CI: in build 135715 on 864f707 (an empty commit that runs CI again), 184 of 188 jobs pass and no job fails. The other 4 are the macOS x64 test jobs. They wait for an agent: the first attempt expired at 10:05 UTC on 2026-10-30, and the CI creates them again up to 3 times. In build 135102 on 3da96bb the same 4 jobs expired in all 4 attempts, and no job failed. The macOS aarch64, Linux and Windows test jobs pass in both builds.
The test files that needed a retry in a job do not test this change. One of them is bun-serve-html.test.ts: its dev-server test rebuild that fails to parse an import, and a request for a failed route needs the same retry on main (builds 134964 and 135046).
Chunk hashing now includes the printed path, source-map mode, and referenced asset and chunk content. Reachable chunk hashes contribute through a sum. Tests cover path and hash behavior, and the documentation describes the source-map contribution to [hash].
Chunk output comments and source-map finalization use chunk debug IDs. SourceMapPieces adds the debug ID during finalization. JavaScript isolated-hash generation follows source-map generation. CSS compile results no longer carry source-map data, and CSS post-processing no longer collects source-map offsets or generates an output source map. The default Miri crate list includes bun_sourcemap.
Tests normalize output references where hashes and debug IDs vary. Tests and snapshots now cover updated debug IDs, output paths, etags, and an HTTP response ETag.

Beyond the inline findings, I also checked three things and ruled them out: the wrapping_add closure sum in final_chunk_hashes (each chunk's own isolated hash is still digested first, and a sum collision of xxHash64 outputs is no likelier than a direct hash collision); the 32-zero debugId placeholder surviving into release builds (every finalize call site in generateChunksInParallel.rs and writeOutputFilesToDisk.rs passes chunk.debug_id(), and push_suffix is the only writer of the suffix layout the slot lookup expects); and the CSS source-map block removal in postProcessCSSChunk.rs (CSS chunks never emitted a map, so nothing read the deleted output_source_map).
Extended reasoning...
The change reworks chunk content hashing and debugId emission across the bundler linker and the sourcemap crate, touching no auth, crypto or input-parsing surface. Inline findings cover the remaining stale-hash case for HTML import manifests and the cwd-dependent sources in in-memory builds; the note above records the adjacent concerns that were examined and did not hold up.
Additional findings (outside the current diff — GitHub can't attach inline comments there):
🟡 src/bundler/LinkerContext.rs — Operators running several Bun.serve instances behind a load balancer can get 404s or wrong-ETag responses for chunk URLs once HTML routes build with a sourcemap. For in-memory builds output_dir is empty, so source_map_relative_path (LinkerContext.rs:1248) resolves sources against the process cwd via relative_platform (src/paths/resolve_path.rs:800); LinkerContext.rs:2060 hashes those bytes, so two instances started from different cwds name the same chunk differently and the HTML from one instance references a path the other does not serve. Fix: for in-memory builds hash sources relative to the project root (top_level_dir) instead of the cwd-relative or absolute form, so every instance of one deploy agrees on names.
Why this was flagged
If any deployment runs more than one Bun process serving the same HTML routes from different working directories, and [serve.static] sourcemap is inline, linked or external: each process does an in-memory build, resolver.opts.output_dir is empty, and generate_source_map_for_chunk at src/bundler/LinkerContext.rs:1248 writes sources relative to that process's cwd. generate_isolated_hash at src/bundler/LinkerContext.rs:2060 now hashes that prefix, so the chunk's [hash], its URL /chunk-<hash>.js and the ETag that HTMLBundle sends differ per process. A browser that received HTML from process A requests /chunk-A.js and a load balancer routes it to process B, which only serves /chunk-B.js, so the page breaks. On the base branch the hash covered the printed code only, so processes with minified output agreed on names regardless of cwd. Remedy: hash root-relative sources for in-memory builds.
Verification: Triggered when two Bun processes serve the same HTML route in memory from different working directories, with a source map on. source_map_relative_path calls relative_alloc("", abs_source) (LinkerContext.rs:1205), which goes through relative_cwd, i.e. the process cwd. This PR newly hashes them (LinkerContext.rs:2060-2062). On the base branch names were cwd-independent in this configuration.
On the working-directory finding in the review above (several Bun.serve instances started from different directories):
The chunk names of an in-memory build depend on the working directory on main already, with no source map. generate_isolated_hash hashes source.path.pretty for each file in the chunk (src/bundler/LinkerContext.rs:1946-1973 on this branch, the same code on main). The pretty path is relative to the working directory.
Probe on bun 1.4.3-canary.1+367d939d9: one Bun.serve HTML route with development: false and no sourcemap option, started from three working directories.
With [serve.static] sourcemap = "inline" the first two directories give the same two names on that version, so the names differ between directories with a source map too.
Bun.build in memory with minify: true and sourcemap: "none" gives three names for the three directories too. esbuild 0.25.1 does the same: three absWorkingDir values give three names with minify: true and no source map.
The sources of an in-memory map are relative to the same directory as the pretty path. So two processes that agree on the pretty paths also agree on sources, and this PR adds no new dependence. I made no code change for this finding. The Notes of the description now say it.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.
The earlier note on the blob.hash assertion in test/bundler/bun-build-api.test.ts is addressed by the latest push (repeat-build toBe plus not.toBe("00000000")). Beyond the inline finding, I also checked the hash ordering: every chunk's isolated_hash (including CSS/HTML) is set by generate_chunk before final_chunk_hashes reads referenced chunks' hashes, and SourceMapPieces::finalize writes the debug ID only after chunk.id() exists, so the map bytes hashed in generate_isolated_hash are always the deterministic zero placeholder. The prefix-vs-suffix slot selection in finalize is also sound, since a split map always carries the non-empty AFTER_DEBUG_ID in suffix.
Extended reasoning...
The change rewrites what the bundler's per-chunk content hash and debugId cover (printed path, source map bytes, sourcemap mode, referenced chunks' isolated hashes, inlined standalone-HTML assets), moves isolated hashing after source-map generation, writes the debugId into the map in place after final hashing, and deletes the dead CSS source-map block; it touches no auth or injection surface but does affect ETag/cache correctness for Bun.serve. One inline nit was reported, and the design goes beyond esbuild in several places (closure sum, reference hashing), so a human should still weigh it; this note only records what else was examined.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
I re-reviewed the latest push and found no bugs; the points from my earlier inline comments are addressed in the current code (the BuildArtifact.hash test now asserts determinism and non-zero, and the dead CompileResult::Css { source_map } field is gone). Because this changes what [hash] and the debugId mean for every bundler user (one-time rename of all hashed JS/CSS/HTML/map outputs, source map now in the hash, closure digest changed to an order-free sum), a maintainer should still weigh in on the design before merge.
What was reviewed:
ContentHasher::write_path and the sanitize_parent_dirs helper: hashes the printed template with / separators and the Windows \ branch is covered; placeholder.hash is None at that point so no [hash] text leaks into its own input.
SourceMapPieces::push_suffix/finalize: the placeholder lands in prefix for unsplit maps and in suffix for split ones, matching how generate_source_map_for_chunk slices at mapping_end; all six emit sites pass Chunk::debug_id(), the same value the //# debugId= comment prints.
Isolated-hash reorder in post_process_js_chunk: the removed isolated_hash argument was the only pre-map reader, and CSS/HTML chunks return SourceMapOption::None from Content::sourcemap, so no finalize call sees an empty output_source_map.
final_chunk_hashes: the new Chunk/ChunkId/Scb writes index chunks[] by the same indices already pushed to out; the standalone-HTML asset write indexes items_content_hash_for_additional_file by source index like the sibling Asset arm.
Extended reasoning...
The branch touches the bundler's content-hash and debug-ID pipeline across src/bundler/LinkerContext.rs, bundle_v2.rs, Chunk.rs, the chunk generation and output writers, and src/sourcemap/lib.rs, plus about 400 lines of new or updated bundler tests. It touches no auth, crypto, or injection surface; the sensitive part is cache-key correctness (ETag and [hash] names), which the change widens rather than narrows. Deciding against approve: the change is large, alters user-visible output names for every project on upgrade, and departs from esbuild in three places (chunk-reference hashing, order-free closure sum, sourcemap-mode byte), which is a design call for a maintainer rather than a mechanical fix; deciding to speak at all: my earlier inline comments were addressed by later commits and no review body had been posted yet.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
I re-reviewed the current head and found no bugs; the two earlier nits (the 00000000-accepting hash assertion, the dead CompileResult::Css.source_map field) are addressed. Since this changes what [hash] and the debugId mean for every user with hashed names, a human look at the policy side is still worthwhile: the one-time rename of every hashed JS/CSS/HTML/map output, and that with a sourcemap a comment-only edit now renames a chunk and every chunk that imports it.
What was reviewed:
SourceMapPieces::finalize placeholder overwrite: lands in suffix for split maps and in prefix for the unsplit no-shift buffer, which is still returned without a copy; the only callers are the six emit sites, all after final_chunk_hashes sets placeholder.hash, and standalone non-HTML chunks are skipped in the second loop so finalize runs once per chunk.
generate_isolated_hash reorder in postProcessJSChunk.rs only moves the call past a ? that already failed the whole function; isolated_hash is set for JS, CSS and HTML chunks before final_chunk_hashes reads referenced chunks' hashes.
Deleted CSS source-map block: Content::sourcemap returns None for CSS, so nothing ever emitted that map; post-merge postProcessCSSChunk.rs is coherent.
write_path hashes the printed template with hash: None, which prints no [hash]; the /./ cleanup in the final path is a deterministic function of the hashed bytes.
Extended reasoning...
The diff (565 insertions, 151 deletions) touches the bundler's chunk content hashing (generate_isolated_hash, final_chunk_hashes), the source-map debugId emission in src/sourcemap/lib.rs, every finalize caller in generateChunksInParallel.rs and writeOutputFilesToDisk.rs, and deletes an unread CSS source-map path; it touches no auth, crypto, or injection surface. It adds 30 naming tests plus a unit test for the in-place debugId write, and the last two commits are merges from main. No findings were reported this run and the prior inline nits are resolved in code, but the change alters user-visible output names for everyone using [hash] and makes a design choice (source map in the hash, order-free closure sum) that a maintainer should endorse, so approval is left to a human.

Follow-up Comments
The server chunk name ignores the contents of its HTML import manifest.
2649-2652: Minor · Data Integrity & Integration · Poor tradeoff
The server chunk name ignores the contents of its HTML import manifest.
final_chunk_hashes leaves the QueryKind::HtmlImport arm empty, so the manifest adds no hash input. The manifest embeds browser chunk paths and hashes. A change to a referenced browser chunk can therefore change the server chunk's bytes while its [hash] name stays the same. The doc comment on final_chunk_hashes says a chunk's name changes with its bytes, so this violates that stated rule.

Update the QueryKind::HtmlImport arm in final_chunk_hashes to include the HTML
import manifest’s referenced browser chunk paths and hashes in the server
chunk’s hash input, so changes to manifest contents change the server chunk
name.

On the follow-up finding about the HTML import manifest (the QueryKind::HtmlImport arm of final_chunk_hashes):
The finding is correct. The arm is the same on main (src/bundler/LinkerContext.rs:2636), and this PR does not change it. #47387 fixes it: it hashes each manifest as printed. The body of this PR lists the gap under Downsides and has a repro in Notes.
The two PRs conflict in final_chunk_hashes, because both rewrite the closure digest. "Merge order" in the Notes of this PR describes the conflict.

It builds the source map before the hash (5960,5999) and hashes the map (6901-6903). esbuild 0.25.1 renames the chunk in rows 1 to 4. The comments ingenerate_isolated_hashare esbuild's. #12576 ported them with the three map writes, which now hash real bytes.Where this goes past esbuild. esbuild 0.25.1 keeps the name in rows 5, 6 and 7. Three writes cover them:
final_chunk_hasheswrites the isolated hash of the chunk that each output piece names (16 hashed bytes per reference). The set of reached chunks does not change in row 6. A 60-page app with 6 shared modules and hashed names: a comment-only edit in one shared module renames 21 of 127 JS outputs with

The threebun initReact templates build with a source map (react-tailwind/build.ts:16,react-shadcn/build.ts:16,react-app/package.json:8). Bun has no option that leavessourcesContentout of the map. An in-memory build and anoutdirbuild write differentsources, so they now get different hashes. The hash already covered the pretty path of each file, which is relative to the working directory, so chunk names depended on that directory before this PR (in esbuild 0.25.1 they depend onabsWorkingDir). Thesourcesof an in-memory map are relative to the same directory.debugId. The ID must cover the final paths, and those exist only after the final hash.
