Problem

  • dns.lookupService("127.0.0.1", 99999, cb) throws ERR_SOCKET_BAD_PORT with port should be >= 0 and < 65536. Received 99999. Node v26.12.1 says Port should be >= 0 and < 65536. Received type number (99999).
  • The cause is Bun::ERR::SOCKET_BAD_PORT (src/jsc/bindings/ErrorCode.cpp:1574). It prints the whole value where Node calls determineSpecificType, and no period. dns.ts also passes the name "port".
  • A 1 MiB string port gives a 1048618-character message (Node: 87).

Fix

  • Bun::ERR::SOCKET_BAD_PORT describes the port with determineSpecificType, ends with a period, and writes the default name Port. dns.lookupService calls validatePort(port), as Node does. A dead range check in listen() is deleted.
  • determineSpecificType uses constructor.name only when it is a string, as Node v26.12.1 does. Otherwise the port {"constructor":{"name":{"toString":null}}} throws a TypeError with no code.
  • Verified: test/js/node/errors/error-code-messages.test.ts (4 new tests, also run under Node v26.12.1), invalid-arg-type-received.test.ts, the node:dgram snapshot, 13 vendored Node tests.
  • Self-reviewed: 22 concerns raised, 19 addressed. Notes give the other 3.

Background

  • Node builds this message in one place (lib/internal/errors.js): name, bound, determineSpecificType(port). That function also writes Received type number (5) in ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE.
  • validatePort is the port check that net, tls, dgram, dns and http share.
  • Considered an extern so that net.SocketAddress and Bun.dns throw this sentence. Removed: net.SocketAddress rejects port: "80", which Node accepts, so the sentence is false there.

Downsides

  • A rejected object port has constructor read, as in Node. A getter that throws there replaces ERR_SOCKET_BAD_PORT.
  • net.SocketAddress and Bun.dns keep their own sentences.
  • validatePort(8080) runs 46 instructions, 45 before (one register load). Release .text is 512 B smaller.
Notes

Origin. A differential run against Node v26.12.1 found this. There is no issue and no user report. .claude/docs/landing-prs.md asks for Node's verbatim message text in node:* modules. #43502 is a merged change of the same kind.

Reproduce. Run with bun and with node:

import dns from "node:dns"; import net from "node:net"; import dgram from "node:dgram";
const t = (label, fn) => { try { fn(); console.log(label, "-> no throw"); } catch (e) { console.log(label, "->", e.name, e.code, "::", e.message); } };
t("lookupService 99999", () => dns.lookupService("127.0.0.1", 99999, () => {}));
t("lookupService '99999'", () => dns.lookupService("127.0.0.1", "99999", () => {}));
t("lookupService Infinity", () => dns.lookupService("127.0.0.1", Infinity, () => {}));
t("net.connect 99999", () => net.connect({ port: 99999, host: "127.0.0.1" }).on("error", () => {}));
t("dgram.send 99999", () => { const s = dgram.createSocket("udp4"); try { s.send("x", 99999, "127.0.0.1"); } finally { s.close(); } });
t("listen 99999", () => net.createServer().listen(99999));
call main 11c3671 Node v26.12.1 and this branch
dns.lookupService(addr, 99999, cb) port should be >= 0 and < 65536. Received 99999 Port should be >= 0 and < 65536. Received type number (99999).
dns.lookupService(addr, "99999", cb) port should be >= 0 and < 65536. Received 99999 Port should be >= 0 and < 65536. Received type string ('99999').
dns.lookupService(addr, Infinity, cb) port should be >= 0 and < 65536. Received Infinity Port should be >= 0 and < 65536. Received type number (Infinity).
dns.lookupService(addr, "", cb) port should be >= 0 and < 65536. Received Port should be >= 0 and < 65536. Received type string ('').
net.connect({ port: 99999 }) Port should be >= 0 and < 65536. Received 99999 Port should be >= 0 and < 65536. Received type number (99999).
dgram send("x", 99999, addr) Port should be > 0 and < 65536. Received 99999 Port should be > 0 and < 65536. Received type number (99999).
net.createServer().listen(99999) options.port should be >= 0 and < 65536. Received 99999 options.port should be >= 0 and < 65536. Received type number (99999).

Message length on main, with dns.lookupService: a 1 MiB string port gives 1048618 characters (Node 87). globalThis as the port gives 72632 characters (Node 64).

Differential against Node v26.12.1. 36 port values in 14 call shapes, 464 lines, debug builds of main 11c3671 and of this branch.

  • Lines where both throw ERR_SOCKET_BAD_PORT and the message differs: 317 -> 40.
  • Lines that change throw or no-throw, error class or code: 0.
  • The 40 that stay:
  • The count is of lines with this code. The same run has 32 lines where Server#listen throws ERR_INVALID_ARG_VALUE with hand-written text (net.ts:4417-4471). They are not changed.

Not changed here.

determineSpecificType and a constructor name that is not a string.

  • Before, it converted constructor.name to a string. For {"constructor":{"name":{"toString":null}}} or a Symbol name that conversion throws. The TypeError replaced the error that was being built.
  • ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE already had this on main (Buffer.compare(value, buf) threw TypeError: No default value). The formatter change would have added ERR_SOCKET_BAD_PORT in dns.lookupService and dgram.
  • Node v26.3.0 had the same behaviour. Node v26.12.1 uses the name only when it is a non-empty string (errors.js). Now Bun does not use a name that is not a string. Both codes are kept. The text for such an object is {} where Node says [Object].
  • Not taken from that Node change: an empty name. An instance of an anonymous class still prints an instance of . Three expectations pin that (invalid-arg-type-received.test.ts:26 and :81, test/aot/builtins/differential/rejected-argument-description.txt:2).

Behaviour on the throw path that comes with Node's template.

  • A rejected object port has constructor and then name read. Program getter runs: 1 (Node 1, before 0). A Proxy port sees 1 get trap (Node 1, before 0).
  • A getter that throws there: its error is the error of the call. Node does the same. A test covers it.

Measurements. Release builds of main 11c3671 and of this branch, linux-x64, same toolchain. valgrind, perf and bloaty are not installed here, so the numbers come from objdump, size, nm, gdb and the ASAN allocator statistics.

Tests.

  • On the released binary 6 tests fail: 3 of the new tests in error-code-messages.test.ts, 2 new rows in invalid-arg-type-received.test.ts, and the node:dgram snapshot. They pass on this branch. The fourth new test (a constructor name that is not a string keeps the code) passes before and after. It guards the formatter change.
  • error-code-messages.test.ts: 17 call shapes, 14 kinds of value, a constructor getter that throws, and 4 ports with a constructor name that is not a string.
  • Snapshot members-of-prototype-objects-for-any-receiver: the two node:dgram connect lines. Node v26.12.1 gives Port should be > 0 and < 65536. Received undefined. and ... Received type string ('a'). for them.
  • Vendored Node tests, unchanged and passing: test-dgram-connect, test-dgram-connect-send-empty-buffer, test-dgram-send-bad-arguments, test-dgram-send-default-host, test-internal-validators-validateport, test-socketaddress, test-dns, test-dns-lookupService, test-dns-lookupService-promises, test-net-connect-options-port, test-net-listen-invalid-port, test-net-server-listen-options, test-net-localerror.
  • Also run: socketaddress.spec.ts, node-dgram.test.js, node-net-server.test.ts, error-code-mirror.test.ts, error-message-string-length-limit.test.ts, the options.port test of node-http.test.ts, and the source lints.
  • Ahead-of-time compilation, on the release build: AOT_PROGRAMS=errors/error-code-messages of test/aot/buns-own-tests-as-compiled-code.test.ts passes. The aot/builtins/differential part needs the WebKit source tree, which this machine does not have. CI runs it.

Self-review: the 3 concerns not taken.

  • Fix the string arm of determineSpecificType here (quote test before the cut, JSON escapes). It changes every ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE message for such strings. It is listed above.
  • Write Node's sentence in Rust for net.SocketAddress. A Rust copy prints U+FFFD for a lone surrogate, and the sentence is false for a string port that Node accepts.
  • Keep the Rust throw extern for Bun.dns. Without net.SocketAddress it has one caller, in a file that Replace c-ares with a DNS resolver in safe Rust #47076 rewrites.

Node builds the message of this code in one place:
`${name} should be ${operator} 0 and < 65536. Received ${determineSpecificType(port)}.`

- `Bun::ERR::SOCKET_BAD_PORT` describes the port with `determineSpecificType` and ends with a period. It printed the bare value.
- `validatePort` no longer allocates the default name "Port" before it decides. The formatter writes it.
- `dns.lookupService` and `dns.promises.lookupService` call `validatePort(port)`, as Node does. They passed the name "port".
- `Server.prototype.listen` loses a range check that no port reaches. It held another wording of the message.
- `determineSpecificType` names a constructor only when `constructor.name` is a string, as Node v26.12.1 does. It converted any other value to a string. When that conversion threw, its TypeError replaced the error that was being built, `ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE` included.

Walkthrough

The change updates port validation and ERR_SOCKET_BAD_PORT formatting. It also adds tests for port errors across Node APIs and for constructor-name edge cases in invalid argument descriptions.

Changes

Port validation errors

Layer / File(s) Summary
Port error formatting
src/jsc/bindings/ErrorCode.cpp, src/jsc/bindings/NodeValidatorBodies.h, test/js/node/errors/invalid-arg-type-received.test.ts
ERR_SOCKET_BAD_PORT now formats the received port with determineSpecificType. Non-string constructor names use the existing fallback. validatePort preserves an undefined name. Tests cover non-string constructor names in invalid argument descriptions.
API validation and tests
src/js/node/dns.ts, src/js/node/net.ts, test/js/node/errors/error-code-messages.test.ts
DNS lookup calls no longer pass an explicit port name, and Server.listen no longer performs a separate numeric-port bounds check. Tests compare port error messages across DNS, net, TLS, HTTP, and datagram APIs.

Status: the fix and its tests are pushed. This PR is #47239.

How I reproduced it. Run with bun and with node:

const dns = require("node:dns");
const dgram = require("node:dgram");
const show = fn => { try { fn(); } catch (e) { console.log(e.code, "|", e.message); } };
show(() => dns.lookupService("127.0.0.1", 99999, () => {}));
show(() => dns.lookupService("127.0.0.1", "99999", () => {}));
show(() => { const s = dgram.createSocket("udp4"); try { s.connect(0); } finally { s.close(); } });
  • Bun 1.4.3-canary (367d939) and main: port should be >= 0 and < 65536. Received 99999 twice, then Port should be > 0 and < 65536. Received 0.
  • Node v26.12.1 and this branch: Port should be >= 0 and < 65536. Received type number (99999)., Port should be >= 0 and < 65536. Received type string ('99999')., Port should be > 0 and < 65536. Received type number (0).

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.

Beyond the inline finding, I also checked two things and ruled them out: the range check deleted from Server.prototype.listen in src/js/node/net.ts was unreachable (every numeric or string port path above it already goes through validatePort(port, "options.port"), and the function/fd/path branches set port to 0 or undefined), and the new determineSpecificType path in src/jsc/bindings/ErrorCode.cpp only calls asString(name) behind name.isString() with an exception check after view(), while the getter-can-throw behavior it introduces for object ports matches Node's own port.constructor.name read.

Extended reasoning...

The change rewrites the ERR_SOCKET_BAD_PORT message in src/jsc/bindings/ErrorCode.cpp to Node's template (default "Port" name, determineSpecificType description, trailing period), drops the "Port" defaulting from validatePort in NodeValidatorBodies.h, stops coercing non-string constructor names in determineSpecificType, removes the explicit "port" name from two dns.ts lookupService calls, deletes a dead range check in net.ts listen, and adds tests plus a dgram snapshot update. It touches no security-sensitive surface; validatePort is the only C++ caller of SOCKET_BAD_PORT and no JS site calls $ERR_SOCKET_BAD_PORT after the net.ts deletion. One confirmed inline finding (the "dgram send, string" test pins a string "0" rejection Node does not make) is what keeps this from a plain approve.

Fall back when constructor.name is empty.

When a rejected port has constructor.name === "", this branch emits an instance of instead of inspecting the port. Node falls back to inspection for an empty name. Require a nonempty string here, and update the existing anonymous-class assertion when correcting the shared formatter. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Escape quoted string ports in the shared formatter.

When an invalid string port contains both ' and \, determineSpecificType selects double quotes but appends the backslash unchanged. Node JSON-escapes that string, so the new ERR_SOCKET_BAD_PORT message differs; control characters have the same problem. Use JSON string escaping in the shared formatter and cover those inputs. Assert the object fallback message for non-string constructor names.

The current test strips the message, so a regression that emits an instance of 5 or an instance of Symbol(name) still passes. These fixtures are plain objects with enumerable properties, and Bun's fallback is [Object]. Assert the complete message for each API.

Review comment at @test/js/node/errors/error-code-messages.test.ts around lines
429 - 454:
Update the test to compare complete captured error messages instead of
truncating them to the code and class. In the test’s API cases, assert the
expected port-bound wording and the `[Object]` fallback message for each API,
preserving the different lower-bound operators where applicable.
