ci: skip the bun_sema spelling test under Miri, and give each Miri crate a 45-minute limit - #47181
The log names neither crate nor test: scripts/rust-miri.ts prints a crate's output only when the crate ends.
Fix
Mark the test #[cfg_attr(miri, ignore)]: it runs no unsafe code, so Miri can find nothing in it.
scripts/rust-miri.ts gives each crate 45 minutes (BUN_MIRI_CRATE_LIMIT_MINUTES overrides). Then it stops cargo and its process tree, prints the output, which ends at the unfinished test, and fails.
The miri job gets timeout-minutes: 90 as a backstop.
Verified: with a 90-second limit and the test not ignored, the script stops bun_sema at that test and leaves no process.
Background
Miri interprets Rust code to find undefined behaviour. One comparison takes it 84 ms.
#[cfg_attr(miri, ignore)] skips a test under Miri only. bun_sema has 249 more.
cargo starts Miri as a child. A kill of cargo alone leaves Miri running and its output pipes open.
Considered timeout-minutes alone: GitHub cancels the job and the held output is lost.
Downsides
Miri no longer runs this test. AoT cargo test still runs it natively.
A crate over 45 minutes now fails, unless the variable gives it more. On CI the whole job took 19 and 11.
I ran the stop on Linux only, not the macOS (pgrep) and Windows (taskkill) paths.
Behaviour change: none
That line is about bun: src/ gets only a test attribute.
cargo miri test -p bun_sema --lib -- -Zunstable-options --format json --report-time prints an event when a test starts and when it ends. The run passes 73 tests in 29 s and then stays in characters_refuse_only_names_that_are_too_far_apart. I stopped it after 31 minutes. The same run with --skip characters_refuse_only_names_that_are_too_far_apart passes the other 226 tests.
How long the test takes
The test compares each of 276 names with each of them at 5 distances: 276 × 276 × 5 = 380,880. With every 10th name (28 names, 3,920 comparisons) it takes 330 s under Miri, 84 ms for each. That gives 8.9 hours for the whole test in my container.
The sub-crates
cargo miri test -p bun_sema compiles bun_sema_standalone, bun_sema_parser, bun_sema_driver and bun_sema_baselines, because bun_sema_standalone is a dev-dependency of bun_sema. It runs only the 476 unit tests of bun_sema: 226 run and 250 are ignored under Miri. The crate has no doc tests.
All five are older than #45631. The first one is from #46001, runs no unsafe code, and is 59% of the crate's time on Miri's clock (340 of 580 s). This PR does not change it.
The runs
The cargo miri test check: success in 19 min 0 s on e768970 and in 10 min 34 s on bea6c24.
bun run rust:miri -p bun_sema: 226 passed; 0 failed; 250 ignored, 901 s in my container.
bun run rust:miri with the first commit: all 19 crates passed, 1,733 s. bun_sema 1,509 s, bun_collections 984 s. My container is slower than CI.
A crate's time includes its wait for cargo's build lock and its own build. In that run bun_errno took 405 s for tests that take seconds. So the limit counts from the start of cargo miri test -p <crate>, and it is 45 minutes.
The limit, with BUN_MIRI_CRATE_LIMIT_MINUTES=1.5, three crates, and the test not ignored:
[miri] bun_url ok 13s
[miri] bun_wyhash ok 18s
[miri] bun_sema FAILED 90s
...
test check::links::tests::row_is_only_read_as_its_own_kind ... ok
test check::regexp_scanner::spelling_tests::characters_refuse_only_names_that_are_too_far_apart ...
[miri] bun_sema was stopped at the limit of 1.5 minutes (BUN_MIRI_CRATE_LIMIT_MINUTES). Its output ends at the test that did not finish. Give that test less to do under `cfg!(miri)`, or skip it there with `#[cfg_attr(miri, ignore)]`.
[miri] failed: bun_sema
The script exits with 1. No cargo or miri process of that run is left.
The same with a stand-in for cargo, a 3-second limit, and these cases:
case
result
three levels of processes that never end
the crate fails at 3 s, no process is left
the same, and a process that leaves the tree and keeps the pipes open
the crate fails at 8 s
cargo exits with 0 and a process keeps the pipes open
the crate passes at 8 s, nothing is stopped
cargo exits with 1 and a process keeps the pipes open
the crate fails at 8 s, nothing is stopped
no /proc list of children
pgrep -P lists them, no process is left
no /proc list and no pgrep
the script says that pgrep did not run, and the crate fails at 8 s
BUN_MIRI_CRATE_LIMIT_MINUTES takes a number above 0. Unset or empty gives 45. For 0, -3, 6O or abc the script exits with an error before it builds. A number too large for setTimeout (more than 24 days) is clamped to that.
On Windows the script calls taskkill /pid <pid> /t /f. I did not run it on Windows.
How the stop works
Each cargo miri test stays in the process group of the script, as on main. Ctrl-C, Ctrl-Z and a signal to the group reach the crates as before.
At the limit the script sends SIGSTOP to cargo, lists its children, stops each child the same way, and then sends SIGKILL. A frozen process starts no more children, so the list is complete.
The list of children comes from /proc/<pid>/task/*/children on Linux, which is also what Bun's own --no-orphans reads. Where that list does not exist the script uses pgrep -P.
The script stops cargo by its process id only while cargo runs. After cargo has exited, that id can belong to another process.
close of a child process comes when every process that holds its output pipes is gone. If one still holds them 5 seconds after the limit, the script closes its end and reports the crate with the exit code of cargo.
A crate that exits with 0 at the moment of the limit passes. It ran all its tests, and the stop found nothing to end.
Other designs
A process group for each crate (detached) and one signal to the group. This was the first commit. The crates then left the terminal's process group: Ctrl-Z, Ctrl-\, a crash of the script or a SIGKILL to its group no longer reached them.
A limit that counts only the time of the tests. A crate that hangs in its build or on cargo's lock would then never be stopped by the script.
Fewer names in the test under cfg!(miri): Miri would still spend time on code with no unsafe in it.
A --skip list in scripts/rust-miri.ts: the crate already marks its tests with the attribute, and a second list can go stale.

…ate a 45-minute limit
The `cargo miri test` job has not finished since #45631. GitHub cancels
it after 6 hours.
#45631 added the test
`check::regexp_scanner::spelling_tests::characters_refuse_only_names_that_are_too_far_apart`
to bun_sema. It makes 380,880 Levenshtein comparisons. Under Miri a
sample of 3,920 of them took 330 seconds, which gives about 9 hours for
all of them. The test runs no unsafe code. Mark it
`#[cfg_attr(miri, ignore)]`.
The job log named neither the crate nor the test, because
scripts/rust-miri.ts prints the output of a crate only when the crate
ends. The script now gives each crate 45 minutes. Past that it stops
the crate, prints its output, which ends at the test that did not
finish, and fails. Each `cargo miri test` leads its own process group
for that, so the script passes SIGINT, SIGTERM and SIGHUP on.
The `miri` job gets `timeout-minutes: 90` for what that limit does not
cover.
bun scripts/build.ts --target=codegen --target=clone-lolhtml --target=clone-rust-argon2

On main (11c3671) the run passes 73 tests in 29 s. Then it stays in check::regexp_scanner::spelling_tests::characters_refuse_only_names_that_are_too_far_apart. I stopped it after 31 minutes. A sample of 3,920 of the test's 380,880 comparisons takes 330 s under Miri, which gives about 9 hours for the whole test.
With this branch bun run rust:miri -p bun_sema ends with 226 passed; 0 failed; 250 ignored.
CI. The cargo miri test check passes on all three commits: 19 minutes on e768970, 11 minutes on bea6c24 and 18 minutes on 05a3e48. The other GitHub checks pass too. The Buildkite build #134431 is red in 28 test files, all of them in test/aot/ on the test-aot-drawn lanes. This diff does not touch what they test: it changes one test attribute under cfg(miri), a CI script, a workflow file and its notes. 13 of the 28 also fail on the builds of recently merged pull requests.
The Miri runner now applies a configurable time limit to each crate test and stops its process tree when the limit expires. The GitHub Actions job has a 90-minute timeout. Workflow guidance describes these limits and Miri test behavior. One regexp scanner test is ignored under Miri.

Beyond the inline findings on scripts/rust-miri.ts, I also checked the #[cfg_attr(miri, ignore)] in src/sema/check/regexp_scanner.rs: the file contains no unsafe, and the aot-rust-tests job's native cargo test still runs the test, so nothing Miri could catch is lost. The new CLAUDE.md paragraph matches the script as written (the -p <crate> path keeps stdio: "inherit" and has no limit).
Extended reasoning...
The change ignores one slow test under Miri, adds a per-crate 45-minute kill timer plus process-group handling to scripts/rust-miri.ts, sets timeout-minutes: 90 on the miri job, and documents it in .github/workflows/CLAUDE.md; no security-sensitive surface. The three inline findings concern the script's Windows kill path, detached process groups, and the fixed limit, so a human look at those is the deciding factor.
…mit from the environment
Each `cargo miri test` stays in the process group of the script, as on
main. The terminal's signals reach it as before, and the script needs no
signal handlers.
At the limit the script stops `cargo` and every process under it. It
freezes a process, lists its children with `pgrep -P`, stops each child
the same way, and then kills the process. On Windows it calls
`taskkill /t /f`. If a process still holds the output pipes 5 seconds
later, the script reports the crate without it.
`BUN_MIRI_CRATE_LIMIT_MINUTES` sets a limit other than 45 minutes.

LGTM — the latest push addresses the points from the earlier review (Windows now stops the whole tree with taskkill /t /f, the children stay in the caller's process group with a pgrep walk instead of detached, and the limit is overridable via BUN_MIRI_CRATE_LIMIT_MINUTES); the remaining inline comments are nits that do not need to block.
Extended reasoning...
The change marks one bun_sema unit test #[cfg_attr(miri, ignore)], adds a per-crate 45-minute limit with tree kill and a diagnostic to scripts/rust-miri.ts, sets timeout-minutes: 90 on the miri job, and documents it in .github/workflows/CLAUDE.md. It touches CI tooling only, no runtime code and no security-sensitive surface. The script's timer, kill-then-fallback-finish sequence and the overLimit reporting were traced and behave as described, the one-off -p <crate> path keeps no limit as the doc says, and no CODEOWNERS entry covers the changed files; the two surviving findings are edge cases (missing pgrep, non-numeric env value) in a developer-facing script.

… is not a number
At the limit the script lists the children of a process from
`/proc/<pid>/task/*/children` on Linux. Where that list does not exist
(macOS, a kernel without it) it uses `pgrep -P`, and it says so when
`pgrep` does not run.
The script stops `cargo` by its process id only while `cargo` runs.
After `cargo` has exited, its process id can belong to another process.
If a process still holds the output pipes 5 seconds after the limit,
the script closes its end of the pipes and reports the crate with the
exit code of `cargo`.
`BUN_MIRI_CRATE_LIMIT_MINUTES` takes a number above 0. For any other
value that is set, the script exits with an error before it builds.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
The latest push addresses everything raised earlier (tree stop on Windows via taskkill, children kept in the caller's process group, the limit overridable through BUN_MIRI_CRATE_LIMIT_MINUTES with invalid values rejected, and the /proc children list with a loud pgrep fallback); I found no bugs in this version. Because the stop path is signal- and platform-sensitive and the Windows branch is untested per the description, a human look at scripts/rust-miri.ts would still be worthwhile.
What was reviewed:
The stop sequence in stopTree/childrenOf: SIGSTOP before listing children so the tree cannot grow, SIGKILL on frozen processes, and the pid-reuse guard (exitCode/signalCode both null) before any signal is sent.
The finish path: close and the 5 s fallback can both call finish, but the promise resolves once and the second clearTimeout is a no-op; a SIGKILLed cargo yields code null, so ok=false and overLimit=true as intended.
#[cfg_attr(miri, ignore)] on the spelling test matches the 250 existing uses in src/sema; the CLAUDE.md and timeout-minutes text agree with the script's behaviour (-p <crate> path has no limit).
Extended reasoning...
The change touches the CI Miri runner script (scripts/rust-miri.ts, about 80 new lines of per-crate timeout and process-tree stop logic), the miri job's timeout-minutes in rust-lints.yml, the workflow CLAUDE.md note describing that behaviour, and one test attribute in src/sema/check/regexp_scanner.rs. It touches no security-sensitive surface: no user-facing runtime code, auth, or parsing of untrusted input. All five of my earlier inline findings are addressed in the current code, and no CODEOWNERS entry covers these files. Defer rather than approve because the process-stop logic has platform branches (Linux /proc, pgrep elsewhere, taskkill on Windows) that the author states were not run on Windows, and one third-party inline thread from the previous push remains unresolved even though the last commit plausibly addresses it.
