resolver: do not look up a "browser" map target again after resolution - #46985
bun build --target=browser applies a package's "browser" map twice to its entry file. With {"./main.js":"./a.js","./a.js":"./b.js"}, import "pkg" bundles b.js. Bun 1.3.14 and esbuild bundle a.js.
A map that swaps two files gives main.js back. With "./a.js":false the build fails with error: File not found "".
No map: +13 instructions per bare import (10,881 to 10,894), 0 allocations, MatchResult stays 152 B, +256 B of binary text.

No issue reports this. It came from a fuzz run. I bundled 189 real entry points with main and with this PR: bun's node fallbacks, the dependencies of the test workspace, and the 64 installed packages that have a "browser" map. The 176 that bundle have the same input files on both.
Same double lookup, also fixed. The implicit index file, "main" without an extension or as a directory, scoped packages, "module" plus "main", a nested package.json with "main", and a tsconfig paths alias to the package directory. Also an entry file that the map sends into the scope of another package.json: with {"./main.js":"../pkg-b/a.js"} in pkg-a and {"./a.js":"./browser.js"} in pkg-b, 1.4.x applies the map of pkg-b too and gives browser.js. 1.3.14, esbuild and this PR give a.js (packagejson/BrowserMapMainFieldAppliedOnceOtherScope). On a matrix of 35 shapes, 16 differ from 1.4.4. 12 return to the answer that 1.3.14 and esbuild share, 2 take esbuild's, 1 takes 1.3.14's, and 1 is the sideEffects shape under "Not fixed here".
Results that move although 1.3.14 and 1.4.x agree. Each moves to esbuild's answer. Each has a test.
A specifier that the map sends to a relative path, when another key names that path: {"dep":"./local.js","./local.js":"./other.js"} gives local.js. Before, it gave other.js only for an unscoped package below node_modules. A scoped package already gave local.js, because the lookup after resolution ran only when the file lookup found node_modules/<first segment>/package.json. Only the map that picked the path is skipped: when the relative path is a file that the map of another package.json names ("dep":"../target/a.js" with {"./a.js":"./b.js"} in target), that map still applies once, as before.
A "main" whose text is a key, when the file it maps to is a key too: "main":"./lib" with {"./lib":"./lib/index.js","./lib/index.js":"./b.js"} gives lib/index.js. Before: b.js.
A package with "module" and "main" and a chain map, imported and required in one bundle, now uses the "main" file for both, as it does with a one-step map. Before: two copies.
Question for a maintainer. The second Fix bullet is the part that moves the first result above. Without it, {"fs":"./shim.js","./shim.js":"./other.js"} keeps giving other.js and "./shim.js":false keeps failing (both since #36597 in 1.4.0). It is 6 lines and one test case. Say so if it should leave this PR.
Not fixed here.
File not found "" still comes from the false arm of the lookup after resolution (import "pkg/x.js" with {"./x.js":false}, an "exports" target mapped to false, a "module" file mapped to false while "main" is live). All of them fail on 1.3.14 too. A result that a lookup disabled is not marked: skipping the lookup there turns the build error into a bundle that throws ReferenceError: import_p is not defined at run time. bundler: port esbuild's "browser" map lookup and bundle a disabled path as an empty module #40832 reworks disabled modules.
When the map sends "main" to a directory, the index of that directory is still looked up before resolution, as in esbuild: {"./main.js":"./dir","./dir/index.js":"./b.js"} gives b.js (1.3.14: dir/index.js, esbuild: Could not resolve). packagejson/BrowserMapAppliedOnceTargetIsDirectory pins it.
A picked file outside the imported directory takes sideEffects from the package.json of that directory. Since 1.4.0 import "pkg/dir" is an empty bundle when dir/package.json says "sideEffects": false and the map sends its index out of dir. With a chain key this PR changes that shape from b.js to an empty bundle. resolver: read sideEffects from the package.json above the file, not from the import route #46911 reads sideEffects from the package.json above the file.
A subpath of a scoped package (import "@scope/pkg/x.js" with {"./x.js":"./a.js"}) is never remapped. The lookup after resolution runs only when the file lookup finds node_modules/<first segment>/package.json. This PR does not change that.
Order against #40832. esbuild removed its own second lookup in evanw/esbuild@b4ef39c133. #40832 does the same here: it deletes the lookup after resolution and adds esbuild's subpath lookup. Its rebase then deletes this flag. This PR brings the chain, swap and disabled-key tests that it lacks. packagejson/BrowserMapExportsTargetAppliedOnce pins what bun does today for an "exports" target. It is a control, not a ruling: esbuild does not apply the map there.
Measurements (linux x64, release builds of main 449877f and of this PR).
size_of::<MatchResult>(): 152 to 152 bytes (rustc -Zprint-type-sizes).
Instructions in one warm check_package_path call (gdb single-step): bare import, no map: 10,881 to 10,894 (--target=bun: 10,209 to 10,215). Map with an unrelated key: 24,458 to 24,470. Subpath import: 5,433 to 5,438. "exports" target: 7,596 to 7,601. No added call, syscall or allocation.
One-step entry remap, which was never wrong ("main":"./lib/index", {"./lib/index":"./dist/p.min.js"}): 20,467 to 12,781 instructions. One check_browser_map call and one directory lookup fewer.
Chain: check_browser_map 2 to 1, resolve_without_remapping 2 to 1, directory lookups 5 to 3, load_as_file 3 to 2.
Release binary text: +256 bytes. check_package_path 6,355 to 6,533, load_from_main_field 1,674 to 1,815, load_as_index_with_browser_remapping 1,610 to 1,624, load_as_file_or_directory 2,868 to 2,855.
Tests. A mutation run on compiled builds removed each mark, the carry for a "module"/"main" pair and each part of the two conditions in turn. A new case fails for each. A build that marks every main-field result fails packagejson/BrowserMapLookupAfterResolution. Also removes todo: true from packagejson/DualPackageHazardImportAndRequireBrowser: it passes since #36620, and it covers the pair that this PR now marks. load_from_main_field had two result literals that differed only in package_json. They are one literal now, so the mark is written once.
Suites run with the debug build.test/bundler/esbuild/{packagejson,default,tsconfig,css,importstar,extra}.test.ts, test/bundler/bundler_{browser,edgecase,plugin,npm,cjs,regressions}.test.ts, test/js/bun/resolve/{resolve,resolve-error,import-custom-condition}.test.ts, test/bake/dev/esm.test.ts. One case, default/TopLevelAwaitForbiddenRequireSourceMapCLI, exceeds the 5 s limit under the debug build (5.5 s). It passes in 0.7 s on release builds of main and of this PR.
Self-review. Not done: marking a result that a lookup disabled (see "Not fixed here").
`check_package_path` looks a resolved file up in the "browser" map after
resolution. Since #36620 the main-field and index lookups also apply the
map before resolution, so the map was applied twice to a package's entry
file: a chain `main -> a -> b` gave `b`, a map that swaps two files gave
the "main" file back, and `a -> false` failed the build with
`File not found ""`.
`MatchResult.browser_remapped` now records that a "browser" map lookup
picked the path. The lookup after resolution skips such a result. It
also skips a file that the map picked for a bare specifier through a
relative path (`"dep": "./local.js"`).
Reproduced on linux x64 with the four packages of the report (chain, cycle, plain, sub). bun build entry.js --target=browser bundles b.js for the chain and main.js for the cycle on bun 1.4.0, 1.4.4 and a debug build of main. Bun 1.3.14 and esbuild 0.21.5 bundle a.js on all four rows. With this branch all four rows give a.js.
Nine of the eleven new cases in test/bundler/esbuild/packagejson.test.ts fail on main and pass with this branch. The two other new cases are controls.

Walkthrough
The resolver now tracks browser-map remaps across package-path, main-field, and index resolution. It skips a later absolute-path lookup in specified remapped cases. Bundler tests cover package entries, indexes, remap destinations, exports, and import/require behavior.

Summary
Track remaps during resolution src/resolver/result.rs, src/resolver/resolver.rs
MatchResult now records whether a browser-map lookup selected a remapped path. Package-path, main-field, index, and fallback resolution propagate this state.
Test package entry remapping test/bundler/esbuild/packagejson.test.ts
Bundler tests cover single remaps for package and implicit index entries, directory targets, and import/require resolution when packages define both main and module. The browser-target dual-package test is no longer marked as todo.
Test remap destinations and lookup controls test/bundler/esbuild/packagejson.test.ts
Bundler tests cover relative-file and bare-package remap targets, later lookups for entries not selected by an earlier lookup, and files selected through exports.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.
Beyond the inline findings, I also checked the dual-package merge at src/resolver/resolver.rs:5818-5828, where only the "module" file's browser_remapped is kept and the "main" fallback's mark is dropped — the lookup after resolution reads only path_pair.primary, so the dropped mark on the secondary has no effect. The "exports" target site at src/resolver/resolver.rs:3852 leaves the flag false, which is correct since no map is applied there, matching the BrowserMapExportsTargetAppliedOnce control test.
Extended reasoning...
The change adds a browser_remapped flag to MatchResult and threads it through four resolver sites so a path picked by a pre-resolution "browser" map lookup is not remapped again in check_package_path, plus ten new bundler tests. No security-sensitive surface is touched. The inline findings and the author's own open "Question for a maintainer" about the relative-path guard mean a human needs to weigh the behavior changes; the two sites above were examined and ruled out as additional concerns.
Additional findings (outside the current diff — GitHub can't attach inline comments there):
🟣 src/resolver/resolver.rs — pre-existing: a browser build of a dual package whose "module" file is mapped to false still fails with File not found "" instead of using the live "main" file. The disabled arm in load_from_main_field (resolver.rs:5287) does not set browser_remapped, so the post-resolution lookup at resolver.rs:2381 runs again on the disabled primary and replaces its text with the empty remap at resolver.rs:2402. Fix: a result that a pre-resolution lookup already disabled must not be looked up again (mark the disabled arms at resolver.rs:5292 and resolver.rs:5553 as browser_remapped, or skip the lookup when primary.is_disabled), while keeping the empty-remap arm for results no pre-lookup touched such as subpath and "exports" targets.
Why this was flagged
Package {"main":"./main.js","module":"./module.js","browser":{"./module.js":false}} imported with import 'pkg' under --target=browser. load_from_main_field for "module" takes the remap.is_empty() arm at src/resolver/resolver.rs:5287-5300, writing a disabled primary with package_json set and browser_remapped left false. The auto-main path at resolver.rs:5818 builds primary=disabled module.js, secondary=main.js, carrying browser_remapped=false. In check_package_path the early return at resolver.rs:2376 does not fire because secondary is Some, and the new condition at resolver.rs:2381-2385 is true, so check_browser_map runs on module.js again, returns the empty remap, and resolver.rs:2402-2403 sets primary to Path::init_with_namespace("", b"file"). The bundler then reports File not found "". The base branch fails the same way (the PR description lists this under "Not fixed here"), so this is pre-existing; the diff touches the condition guarding this block but leaves the disabled arms unmarked.
Verification: Pre-existing; the base reaches the same error by the same route. A browser-target bundle imports a package with "main" and "module" whose browser map sets the "module" file to false. The disabled arm at src/resolver/resolver.rs:5287-5300 leaves browser_remapped false, so the lookup at line 2381 runs again and lines 2401-2403 replace the primary with an enabled empty path, giving File not found "".

🟡 (optional) Browser builds that import a package subdirectory with a nested "sideEffects": false and a chained browser map now emit an empty bundle instead of the mapped file. load_as_index_with_browser_remapping at src/resolver/resolver.rs:5575 writes the remapped file with no package_json, src/resolver/resolver.rs:5856 attributes it to the subdirectory's package.json, and the new browser_remapped: true at src/resolver/resolver.rs:5581 skips the post lookup that on base re-resolved the chain target with the outer package.json. Fix: attribute a map-picked file to the package.json that owns the file (its own directory's enclosing package), not the imported directory's, so sideEffects is read from the right package on every remap path.
Why this was flagged
Trigger: pkg/package.json browser map {"./dir/index.js":"./a.js","./a.js":"./b.js"}, pkg/dir/package.json with "sideEffects": false, entry does import "pkg/dir" with --target=browser. load_as_file_or_directory on pkg/dir calls load_as_index_with_browser_remapping (src/resolver/resolver.rs:5853); the file arm at :5575 returns pkg/a.js with package_json None and browser_remapped true; :5856 fills package_json with pkg/dir/package.json (sideEffects false). On base the post lookup at src/resolver/resolver.rs:2394 then mapped a.js to b.js and :2419 replaced package_json with pkg/package.json, so b.js was bundled with side effects kept. After merge :2383 skips that step, the file a.js carries sideEffects:false from a package.json that does not own it, and the tree shaker drops the whole import: the user gets an empty bundle with no error. Remedy: set package_json for a remapped index/main file from the file's own enclosing package before the sideEffects decision.
Verification: The result is written with package_json None and the new browser_remapped: true (src/resolver/resolver.rs:5575-5583). :5856 attributes a.js to pkg/dir/package.json. The post-resolution block is now gated by && !res.browser_remapped (:2381-2385), so it is skipped. On base :2419 overwrote the dir attribution, so base emitted b.js.

This is the second Downsides bullet of the description. The file that the map picks is right (a.js). What is wrong is where sideEffects comes from: the picked file takes the package.json of the imported directory. That does not need a chain key. {"./dir/index.js":"./a.js"} with "sideEffects": false in dir/package.json is already an empty bundle on 1.4.0 to 1.4.4 and on main.
An earlier version of this branch attached the package.json of the map's owner to a picked file outside the imported directory. It dropped a file that main keeps when the map sends the entry into another package and the owner says "sideEffects": false. The answer also depended on which import resolved the file first. #46911 reads sideEffects from the package.json above the file in finalize_result, for every route, so I left this shape to it.
…lative target
A map that sends a bare specifier to a relative path no longer applies
to that path again. When the path is a file that the map of another
package.json names, that map still applies once, as before.
On the "module" file mapped to false while "main" is live (File not found ""): I tried the suggested change.
With the two disabled results marked as browser_remapped, import v from "pkg" builds at exit 0 and the bundle throws ReferenceError: import_p is not defined at run time. The same package through a relative import (import v from "./vendor/pkg") already does that on main, because no lookup runs after resolution on that route. A build error is the safer result, so the disabled results stay unmarked. The description lists this under "Not fixed here". esbuild gives an empty module for the import, and #40832 implements that.
The optional inline findings:
The specifier guard now skips only the map that picked the path (628ec8d). A relative target that the map of another package.json names keeps its lookup.
The sideEffects shape is unchanged. The reason is in that thread.
The scoped subpath is not changed here. The reason is in that thread.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.
The follow-up commit's relative_remap_scope comparison addresses the cross-package relative-target case from my earlier comment; a target in another package's browser scope now keeps its one lookup. Beyond the inline finding, I also checked that the new scope comparison cannot false-match on the NOT_FOUND sentinel (the captured index comes from a Some scope, and a NOT_FOUND base scope short-circuits via get_enclosing_browser_scope), and that the "module"/"main" carry at src/resolver/resolver.rs:5830 copies the flag for the primary path, which is the only path the post-resolution lookup inspects.
Extended reasoning...
The PR adds a browser_remapped flag to MatchResult and a per-lookup scope record in check_package_path so a package.json "browser" map is applied at most once per resolution; it touches no security-sensitive surface. One inline nit is posted and another verified finding was dropped before posting, and the change alters bundler resolution results for several real-package shapes, so a human maintainer should still weigh the behavioral shift the author flags as a question.

…picked into another scope
The comment on the lookup after resolution named every main-field or
index result. Only a path that the "browser" map picked is skipped.
Add a case for an entry file that the map sends into the scope of
another package.json: the picked file is final there too, as on 1.3.14
and in esbuild.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
I re-reviewed the latest push and found no new bugs; the comment on the post-resolution guard now states the real condition, and the scope-index comparison added in 628ec8d keeps another package's own "browser" map for a relative target. Since the PR itself asks a maintainer to rule on the bare-specifier-to-relative-path rule and changes which file a browser build picks for several existing shapes, a human look is still worthwhile.
What was reviewed:
relative_remap_scope vs base_dir_info.enclosing_browser_scope: both are the same DirInfo::Index that get_enclosing_browser_scope() reads, and the stored value is never NOT_FOUND because it is only recorded after that getter returned Some, so no spurious match on a file outside any browser scope.
The merged MatchResult construction in load_from_main_field: the two old arms differed only in package_json, which dir_info.package_json().map(from_ref) reproduces.
browser_remapped is set at the four remap sites and read only in check_package_path; the "module"/"main" pair carries it from the primary (module) result, which is the only path the post lookup inspects.
The new BrowserMapMainFieldAppliedOnceOtherScope case exercises both a sibling-package and a nested-package.json target and asserts exact stdout.
Extended reasoning...
The PR adds a browser_remapped flag to MatchResult and a relative_remap_scope index in check_package_path so the resolver's post-resolution "browser" map lookup is skipped when a pre-resolution lookup already picked the file, touching the bundler's package resolution but no security-sensitive surface. Since my last review, one commit reworded a comment I flagged and added a test case; the earlier commit replaced a boolean with a scope-index comparison that addresses my first inline finding. My inline note about sideEffects attribution for a map-picked file in a nested package is still an open thread with an author reply, and the description explicitly asks a maintainer to decide whether the bare-specifier-to-relative-path rule belongs in this PR, so this is not a change to approve without a human.
#40832 (the esbuild port of the browser map lookup) is rebuilt on main and now carries the MatchResult.browser_remapped mark and the 11 tests of this PR, because its lookup before the file lookup needs the same mark. The two PRs touch the same lines in check_package_path, load_from_main_field and load_as_index_with_browser_remapping.
If this PR lands first, #40832 rebases on it. If #40832 lands first, this PR is covered by it.
Resolver:
- Restore the `package_json` condition of the lookup after resolution.
Remove the chain marks and the tests that belong to #46985.
- A package candidate takes a key in this order: a key for the path as the
import spells it, the key of the file that loads, the lookups of a
directory, then a key with an implicit extension for a file that does not
exist. A key for `x.mjs` no longer applies to a `require` that loads `x.js`.
- One constructor for a disabled path (`disabled_path`): no trailing
separator, and one interned copy of each distinct path. The `main` and
index lookups use it too.
- A live `main` stands in for a disabled `module` entry where the pair is
built, so `finalize_result` sees the path that loads.
- A remap cycle stops at the entry that is already being resolved.
- The `esm_subpath` scratch is on the frame of `load_node_modules`.
Bundler:
- The empty module of a disabled file has a typed mark,
`Path.is_disabled_module`. `PathMap` keeps marked paths in a second table,
for the module graph and for the queue of each importer. One input gives
one bundle.
- `export *` from a disabled file gives no name. An import of such a name is
`undefined` with a warning, and not a build error.
Tests:
- A table of 564 layouts (`test/bundler/browser-field-matrix.ts`) with a
snapshot, and `scripts/browser-field-matrix.ts` to compare it with esbuild.
- Cases for each decision above, and the two cases of #41183.

It came from a fuzz run. I bundled 189 real entry points with main and with this PR: bun's node fallbacks, the dependencies of the test workspace, and the 64 installed packages that have a
"browser"map. The 176 that bundle have the same input files on both.Same double lookup, also fixed. The implicit
indexfile,"main"without an extension or as a directory, scoped packages,"module"plus"main", a nested package.json with"main", and a tsconfigpathsalias to the package directory. Also an entry file that the map sends into the scope of another package.json: with{"./main.js":"../pkg-b/a.js"}inpkg-aand{"./a.js":"./browser.js"}inpkg-b, 1.4.x applies the map ofpkg-btoo and givesbrowser.js. 1.3.14, esbuild and this PR givea.js(packagejson/BrowserMapMainFieldAppliedOnceOtherScope). On a matrix of 35 shapes, 16 differ from 1.4.4. 12 return to the answer that 1.3.14 and esbuild share, 2 take esbuild's, 1 takes 1.3.14's, and 1 is thesideEffectsshape under "Not fixed here".Results that move although 1.3.14 and 1.4.x agree. Each moves to esbuild's answer. Each has a test.
{"dep":"./local.js","./local.js":"./other.js"}giveslocal.js. Before, it gaveother.jsonly for an unscoped package belownode_modules. A scoped package already gavelocal.js, because the lookup after resolution ran only when the file lookup foundnode_modules/<first segment>/package.json. Only the map that picked the path is skipped: when the relative path is a file that the map of another package.json names ("dep":"../target/a.js"with{"./a.js":"./b.js"}intarget), that map still applies once, as before."main"whose text is a key, when the file it maps to is a key too:"main":"./lib"with{"./lib":"./lib/index.js","./lib/index.js":"./b.js"}giveslib/index.js. Before:b.js."module"and"main"and a chain map, imported and required in one bundle, now uses the"main"file for both, as it does with a one-step map. Before: two copies.Question for a maintainer. The second Fix bullet is the part that moves the first result above. Without it,
{"fs":"./shim.js","./shim.js":"./other.js"}keeps givingother.jsand"./shim.js":falsekeeps failing (both since #36597 in 1.4.0). It is 6 lines and one test case. Say so if it should leave this PR.Not fixed here.
File not found ""still comes from thefalsearm of the lookup after resolution (import "pkg/x.js"with{"./x.js":false}, an"exports"target mapped tofalse, a"module"file mapped tofalsewhile"main"is live). All of them fail on 1.3.14 too. A result that a lookup disabled is not marked: skipping the lookup there turns the build error into a bundle that throwsReferenceError: import_p is not definedat run time. bundler: port esbuild's "browser" map lookup and bundle a disabled path as an empty module #40832 reworks disabled modules."main"to a directory, the index of that directory is still looked up before resolution, as in esbuild:{"./main.js":"./dir","./dir/index.js":"./b.js"}givesb.js(1.3.14:dir/index.js, esbuild:Could not resolve).packagejson/BrowserMapAppliedOnceTargetIsDirectorypins it.sideEffectsfrom the package.json of that directory. Since 1.4.0import "pkg/dir"is an empty bundle whendir/package.jsonsays"sideEffects": falseand the map sends its index out ofdir. With a chain key this PR changes that shape fromb.jsto an empty bundle. resolver: read sideEffects from the package.json above the file, not from the import route #46911 readssideEffectsfrom the package.json above the file.Could not resolve(resolver: skip main-field/index browser remap when the target is a bare package #36668). resolver: skip main-field/index browser remap when the target is a bare package #36668 stays compatible: an unmarked result still reaches the lookup after resolution.import "@scope/pkg/x.js"with{"./x.js":"./a.js"}) is never remapped. The lookup after resolution runs only when the file lookup findsnode_modules/<first segment>/package.json. This PR does not change that.importandrequirecan pick different keys for"main":"./main". That is a separate regression of resolver: pass absolute path to browser-map check for main field and index #36620. This PR does not change it.Order against #40832. esbuild removed its own second lookup in evanw/esbuild@b4ef39c133. #40832 does the same here: it deletes the lookup after resolution and adds esbuild's subpath lookup. Its rebase then deletes this flag. This PR brings the chain, swap and disabled-key tests that it lacks.
packagejson/BrowserMapExportsTargetAppliedOncepins what bun does today for an"exports"target. It is a control, not a ruling: esbuild does not apply the map there.Measurements (linux x64, release builds of main 449877f and of this PR).
