macros: parse a file that imports a macro on a dedicated pool - #46862
On 2 CPUs, two imported modules whose macro awaits Bun.file(p).text() hang bun run in 50 of 50 runs. Bun.build() and transform() hang too.
The macro runs on the work pool thread that parses its caller. It sleeps in Run::coerce (src/js_parser_jsc/Macro.rs:909), and the read needs a thread of that pool.
Fix
TranspilerJob, ParseTask and TransformTask set features.defer_macro_imports, and the parser stops at an import that binds a macro (Result::MacroDeferred).
The job runs again on MacroPool, created on first use, or in place if that pool gets no thread. A waiting macro then holds no work pool thread.
Verified on linux-x64: test/bundler/transpiler/macro-test.test.ts (23 new tests, 20 fail on main), native-plugin.test.ts, worker-late-completion.test.ts, bun-build-api.test.ts.
Self-reviewed: 74 concerns raised, 71 addressed. Notes name the other 3.
Background
WorkPool (one thread per CPU) runs file reads, DNS lookups and module parses.
Repro. A machine with 2 CPUs needs no environment variable. taskset -c 0,1 gives the same pool on a larger machine.
// gen.mjsimportfsfrom"node:fs";fs.writeFileSync("data.txt","hello\n");fs.writeFileSync("m.ts",`export async function read() { return (await Bun.file(import.meta.dir + "/data.txt").text()).trim(); }\n`);for(constiof[0,1])fs.writeFileSync(`mod${i}.ts`,`import { read } from "./m.ts" with { type: "macro" };\nexport const v = read();\n`);fs.writeFileSync("entry.ts",`import { v as a } from "./mod0.ts";\nimport { v as b } from "./mod1.ts";\nconsole.log(a, b);\n`);
bun gen.mjs && taskset -c 0,1 timeout 8 bun entry.ts
Runs that hang (exit 124), Linux x64, release builds of main 179664e and of this branch:

The 50 cells use UV_THREADPOOL_SIZE=2 and taskset -c 0,1, with 2, 4 and 64 modules.
The hosts are import, import(), Bun.build(), transform() and a dev-server HTML route.
The macros await Bun.file().text(), a top-level await, crypto.subtle.digest, dns.promises.lookup or fetch("http://localhost").
Of the 13 runs that finish on main, 12 are fetch("http://localhost"), which needs no pool task.
gdb on a hung process shows each pool thread in epoll_pwait2 under EventLoop::wait_for_promise < Macro::Run::coerce. The ReadFile job is in the queue of the same pool (src/runtime/webcore/blob/read_file.rs:271).
Macro::init has the same wait for a macro module with a top-level await.
bun build (CLI) does not hang. Its bundler owns a pool, so the work pool stays free. This PR leaves it as it is (worker_pool_is_owned).
Earlier reports.#7611, #14104 and #20274 report macros that hang in bun build when they read a file with Bun.file(). They are closed. #15991 (closed, not merged) has this diagnosis for the bundler: the thread that parses is blocked until the macro finishes. #39905 was for a different cause (#39900).
Where the fix is.
P::put_macro_ref (src/js_parser/p.rs) is the stop. It is the one writer of the parser's macro references, so the parse stops exactly where an import binds a macro.
Such a binding is a default, a namespace or a named import with with { type: "macro" } or a macro: path, and a default or named import that a [macros] remap names.
An import that binds no name writes no reference, so it is not a stop: import "./m.ts" with { type: "macro" } and import {} from. Before this, such a file was parsed twice and started 2 threads of the second pool.
It does nothing when no call can run the macro. The cases are --no-macros, a file under node_modules, a macro's own module, and --disallow-code-generation-from-strings=strict. Such a file starts no thread of the second pool.
Only a host that can run the job again sets the flag. Transpiler::parse and parse_maybe_return_file_only never set it. They serve require(), transformSync() and bun build --no-bundle.
Most of the transpiler.rs hunk is None becoming Err(ParseStop::Failed). The deferral then has a type, and no caller converts the result.
Also in this diff.
cache.rs: Result::MacroDeferred passes through, and the log of that parse is not kept. The second parse logs again, so a warning is reported once. Without it, a transform() with one warning rejects with an AggregateError of two.
ParseTask.rs: the task keeps its source text for the second run (one open). When the task opened the file itself, the second run decides again who owns the descriptor. Without that, the dev server kept one descriptor for each rebuild.
ParseTask.pending_log: the second run does not call a native onBeforeParse plugin again, so the task keeps what the first run logged. Without it, the plugin's warning for a file that imports a macro was lost: of 3 warnings for 3 files, main reports 3 and this branch reported 2.
bundle_v2.rs, bundler/ThreadPool.rs: a bundler worker can now be on a thread of the second pool. Worker::deinit_soon returns the pool of its thread, and the build wakes each such pool. This replaces bundler::ThreadPool::wake_for_idle_events, which named two pools. Without the wake, the worker of a second-pool thread is never torn down.
visit_expr.rs: both "macros are refused" arms now ask P::macro_refusal, which the stop asks too. Messages and positions are the same.
MacroPool::ensure_worker: a job scheduled on a pool with no thread would never run. If the OS refuses the pool's first thread, the host parses again on its own thread, as before this PR. The next job tries the pool again.
docs/runtime/transpiler.mdx: the two sentences about threads.
Still wrong after this PR.
Nested requests. A macro can await a parse of code that imports a macro: await transform(code), or a Worker whose module imports one. That macro holds a thread of the second pool, and the inner parse needs one. It hangs when as many such macros wait at once as that pool has threads.
With 4 such modules, 5 of 5 runs hang at a 2-thread pool and 0 of 5 at 12 threads. Main does the same. No issue tracks it yet.
A first version of this PR ran such an inner macro in the VM that asked for it. The self-review found a shape that works on main and broke with it, so it is not here.
Macro VMs on pool threads are never torn down (macros: run every macro on one dedicated VM thread #40059 changes that). A Blob or a Bun.Transpiler that a macro made then reads as leaked at exit. Two tests turn leak detection off for their child for that reason. On a debug build of main, one module does the same.
Stale macro results across builds (macros: move a worker thread's macro VM to the build it serves #41160). A macro VM outlives the build that made it. Bun.build() warms 8 threads of the work pool, and the second pool starts 2. So a later build meets an earlier VM more often: 13.3 of 16 sequential builds against 8.1. At a 2-thread pool it is 14 of 16 on both.
Warming 8 threads of the second pool gave 8.2. But 256 such files then made 59 macro VMs at a large pool, where main makes 16.
Not changed here. Three bundler paths treat a task's log as main does:
macOS and Windows read a file on a pool of their own (uses_io_pool). The move back to the work pool drops the task's log, so a native plugin's messages are lost there for every file.
I did not keep the log over that move. A log with a warning and no error then reaches the arm at bundle_v2.rs:8016, which reads any message as "the error is logged".
That arm is wrong on main on Linux already. A plugin that logs a warning, plus a YAML entry point nested 3,000 levels deep, ends in panic: index out of bounds: the len is 0 but the index is 0 (doStep5.rs:813). As an import, the build reports success: true and the module is undefined.
With the IO pool, main reports StackOverflow while parse for that file. With the log kept over the move, it panicked there too.
A file with an import that does not resolve loses its warnings (bundle_v2.rs:6558).
Self-review. Three passes raised 36, 25 and 13 concerns. Not taken:
Open tracking issues for the nested requests, the VM teardown, the wait in terminate() and the three bundler paths. They are described above with their repros, and no issue tracks them.
A debug assertion in wait_for_promise that no work pool thread waits there. put_macro_ref is the one writer, and the test that reads the thread names binds the macro by each form.
Measurements. Linux x64, 12 CPUs, release builds. Instruction counts are perf_event_open (instructions:u) over the process and its threads. Each is the median of 25 interleaved runs of main, PR, main. The number in brackets is main against main. valgrind and strace could not be installed.
Code with no macro import:
gdb: the second pool is never created, and no file is parsed twice. Parser entries: 2001 for 2000 imports, 10,001 for 10,000 transform() calls, 2003 for a Bun.build() of 2000 files.
Per call: import +43 [58], require() +24 [37], a TOML or text import -18 [22]. Bun.build(): +98 [43] and -261 [91] in two sets, and +14 and +5 by the minimum.
transformSync(): +37 (0.05%) [1]. transform(): +75 and +76 (0.10%) [78, 21]. TransformTask::run has a second caller and is no longer inlined, and the task is 2 fields larger.
ThreadPool: 0 differing instructions in Thread::run, notify_slow, warm, schedule_inside_thread_pool, wait, drain_idle_events and schedule.
Binary: .text +5,376 bytes, .data +128 bytes. 0 new host functions. A ParseTask is 416 bytes, was 408.
A file that imports a macro, on a host of the work pool:
2 parser entries (1 before) and 1 more queue entry, also when the macro is never called.
With the import as the first statement: +40,000 instructions through import and +36,500 through transform(). Through Bun.build() it is inside the spread.
The stop is at the binding, after the import record and the symbol exist. A stop at the top of the statement measured +34,700 and +30,500, with a second copy of the condition.
Each source byte before the import adds about 110. With the import last in 64 files of 60 KB, Bun.build() needs +46% instructions and 383 MB against 276 MB.
Bun.build() keeps what the first parse allocated until the build ends. 2000 files of 6.6 KB peak at 798 MB against 768 MB.
open calls per file: 2 through import (1 before), 1 through Bun.build() (1 before).

Tests.
macro-test.test.ts, block "macros in more modules than the work pool has threads". Each test runs a child with UV_THREADPOOL_SIZE=2.
A child that hangs is killed after 4 s on a local release build. On CI, debug and ASAN builds it gets 60 s.
CI and release builds pass no test timeout. A local debug or ASAN build names 70 s, so that the test outlasts the kill.
A release build of main fails 20 of the 23. A debug build of main failed the same 19 of the first 22. The 3 that pass on main assert what main also does:
An uncalled macro is not loaded.
Strict mode starts no thread.
A macro runs where its file is parsed when the pool gets no thread.
This branch passes 57 of 57 on the debug build and on the release build. It also passes with the environment of the ASAN lane (leak detection, exception-check validation).
The two "OS refuses the thread" tests preload a shim that fails pthread_create for a work pool thread. They run on glibc Linux.
worker-late-completion.test.ts has three rows for a job that comes back after its worker began to exit. Two more tests terminate a worker while its job is in the second pool's queue.
Those two use the Web Worker. The parent of a node:worker_threads Worker posts to it for its stdio, and BUN_DEBUG_TEST_WORKER_TEARDOWN_GATE holds such a post.
bun-build-api.test.ts: the worker teardown test has two more rows for files that import a macro.
The test that reads the thread names binds the macro by a named, a default and a namespace import.
native-plugin.test.ts: one test builds three files, and one file that does not parse, with a plugin that logs a warning. It turns the IO pool off, so macOS takes the same path. Main passes it.
CI skips native-plugin.test.ts on Windows (test/expectations.txt).
macOS and Windows: not run by me. The CI lanes for macOS and Windows (x64 and arm64) run macro-test.test.ts and bun-build-api.test.ts. They passed them at 107d934.
The new worker-late-completion.test.ts tests need a debug or ASAN build. In CI, the Linux ASAN lane runs them.
Each of these was removed in a debug build, and a named test failed:
the deferral in each remap arm
the cache.rs passthrough
the descriptor hand-back and the kept source text
the refusal check and the strict check
the wake of the second pool
worker_pool_is_owned
the cancelled() check of the second transform() run
the fallback, and the retry after a refused thread
put_macro_ref at the default and the namespace binding
the TOML, YAML and require tests of test/js/bun/resolve
test/internal/source-lints/ (183 tests)
cargo check --workspace --all-targets, clippy on the changed crates, rust:check-all for Windows x64 and macOS arm64
Order with #40059.#40059 moves every macro to one host thread. The thread that parses still waits for the answer there (request.done.wait()), so a work pool thread is still held. The stop in this PR does not depend on where the VM lives. @dylan-conway, which order do you prefer? I can rebase on either.
no test proof · iteration 3 · platform-specific test(s) that do not run on this machine, deferring to CI, which covers all platforms: test/js/web/workers/worker-late-completion.test.ts, test/bundler/transpiler/macro-test.test.ts, test/bundler/native-plugin.test.ts, test/bundler/bun-build-api.test.ts
A macro runs on the thread that parses the file that calls it, and that
thread sleeps until the promise the macro returned settles. For an
imported module, Bun.build(), the development server and
Bun.Transpiler#transform(), that thread was a work pool thread. What a
macro waits for (a file read, a DNS lookup, a hash) is most often a task
of the same pool. With as many such files as the pool has threads, every
thread slept and no task ran.
TranspilerJob, ParseTask and TransformTask now ask the parser to stop at
an import that binds a macro (features.defer_macro_imports,
Result::MacroDeferred) and run the job again on MacroPool, a second pool
that is created on first use. When the OS refuses the first thread of
that pool, the job parses again where it is.

Priority: Normal
Merge Risk: Low · up to 107d9
The change fixes macro-related hangs and looks safe to merge. A bare macro import (one with no bindings) needlessly triggers a second parse and can start the macro pool. One new test can hang the test run instead of failing cleanly if its setup breaks. Both are small, low-risk fixes.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.
Beyond the inline findings, two other candidates were examined and ruled out: the bundler Worker teardown in bundle_v2.rs (a worker on a "Bun Macro" thread is now woken through the pool deinit_soon returns, so it is not left alive after the build), and the TransformTask handoff in JSTranspiler.rs (JobContext::run moves the completion into this.done and returns None immediately after MacroPool::schedule without touching this again, so there is no overlapping access with the pool thread).
Extended reasoning...
The change adds a second process-global thread pool for files that import macros, a parser stop (Result::MacroDeferred) and a two-phase re-run in three job types (ParseTask, TranspilerJob, TransformTask), plus bundler worker teardown changes; it touches no auth, crypto or input-parsing security surface but is thread-affinity and lifetime sensitive. Five inline findings were posted, so a human look is already signalled; this note only records the two additional candidates that were checked and found not to apply.
…ross the deferral
`P::put_macro_ref` is now the one writer of `macro_.refs`, and it is
where the parse stops for a host that asked. An import that binds no
name (`import "./m.ts" with { type: "macro" }`, `import {} from`) writes
no macro reference. It no longer stops the parse, and it starts no
thread of the macro pool.
A ParseTask whose parse stopped at a macro import keeps what it logged.
The second run does not call a native onBeforeParse plugin again, so the
messages of the plugin for that file were lost.
Tests: the thread test binds the macro by a named, a default and a
namespace import. A bare macro import starts no macro pool thread. A
warning of a native plugin is reported for a file that imports a macro,
also when that file does not parse. The terminate tests fail at once
when the host exits before it names the ticket. In macro-test, CI and
release builds keep the default test timeout.
src/bundler/transpiler.rs: main (98a4365, Fix use-after-free of BuildMessage.position.file: real lifetimes for Source, Path, ImportRecord and resolve results #46834) gave parse, parse_maybe_return_file_only and parse_maybe_return_file_only_allow_shared_buffer their own lifetime 'p. This PR changes their return type to Result<ParseResult, ParseStop> and adds the defer_macro_imports parameter. The resolution has the 'p signatures of main with the return type and the parameter of this PR: Result<ParseResult<'p>, ParseStop>.
src/runtime/api/JSTranspiler.rs: get_parse_result returns Result<ParseResult<'p>, ParseStop>, for the same reason.
src/runtime/jsc_hooks.rs (no conflict): the ParseResult import that this PR removed is back, because main added a use of it in that block.
cargo check --workspace passes on the merged tree (Linux x64).
Tests, on a local debug build that contains this merge and the main merges of two other open PRs, with --timeout 30000: test/bundler/transpiler/macro-test.test.ts (57 pass), test/bundler/native-plugin.test.ts (20 pass, 1 skip), test/internal/source-lints/vm-thread-door.test.ts (47 pass), test/js/web/workers/worker-late-completion.test.ts (42 pass in the second run. In the first run the fs.readFile row hit the 30 s timeout while another build ran on the machine).
test/bundler/bun-build-api.test.ts on the same build: 89 pass, 3 fail. The four tests that this PR adds pass. The 3 that fail hit their time limit on the debug build: bytecode: function record on an encoder page boundary, bytecode: repeated builds don't retain the generated code and Bun.build can be called thousands of times in one process without crashing.
